Baseball is back at the Winston Salem Dash!
by Brian Watkins Nothing marks the beginning of the spring season better than baseball season coming into swing. Fans of the ball game should put April 16 on their calendars, which is the first home game of the season at the Winston Salem Dash. The game starts at 7pm, and the first four games pit our team against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. During opening weekend guests will enjoy introductions to all the players and a variety of attractions, including a fireworks show Friday evening (the 17th). Kids will also enjoy characters from the movie Frozen, who will also be in attendance Friday. The fun continues into Saturday the 18th with the Burger King Value Pack. For $32 guests can receive 4 tickets, 4 BK value meals, and 4 hats. This convenient offering is great for families or small groups of friends, providing the tickets as well as a memento to bring home. Note that this value pack must be purchased in advance and the value meals are redeemed at participating Burger Kings. Whether you’re a returning fan or are thinking of attending the games for the first time, this is a great entry point and a fun way to spend part of Saturday. Like years past, during the annual preseason Coaches Luncheon this year’s charity partner will be announced. Last year the Dash partnered with Senior Services, and donated the proceeds from the Dash’s Commemorative Brick Program to them for a variety of powerful causes. The Brick program allows fans to create lasting memories while supporting the community; proceeds from each brick sold allow the Dash and its yearly charity partner to further their outreach programs. The Dash also features a yearly MVP Education Program, partnering with schools in the Triad and surrounding counties to reach over 30,000 children. The driving force of the program is to provide fun challenges for the students, and reaching goals moves each child though the virtual bases toward a home run where (Cont. on pg 17) Detailed event information available at www.336events.com

The Art Shop: New ownership with the same traditional values. By Brian Watkins
For over a hundred years The Art Shop has adorned the Greensboro area. Though it’s changed hands a few times, the spirit has remained consistent as a family business for most of that time. Most recently the Art Shop’s long time gallery director, Andy McAfee, has taken the reigns. Previous owner Lenny Dolin says the shop is in good hands and that Andy “offers things that nobody else can do.”
He continues, “People will continue to be well-served from The Art Shop as they have been for a long time.”
Prior to Andy McAfee working in The Art Shop, the majority of the business was in framing. Now, however, McAfee’s efforts have maintained the framing portion but allowed the art to flourish. He even performs many of the art installations in people’s homes, which has been an integral part of the relationship-building that continues to make The Art Shop what it is. After all, art is a very personal thing for everyone and knowing the one connecting you with the art you’re seeking leads to finding the most ideal pieces. The Art Shop is North Carolina’s oldest fine art and framing gallery, and was named the “Number One Gallery in the Nation for Retail Excellence” by Décor Magazine in 2003 – 2007. The custom framing professionals have over 75 years combined experience, and can also restore old art. Located at 3900-A W. Market Street, the 5500 square foot gallery is sure to have something for all tastes, and serves as a great spot for civic meetings or social events. As meetings and events go, the experienced team members at The Art Shop also make themselves available as speakers at events

held there for professional events related to art. Typical speaking topics include how to select art for your home or office, how to hang pictures, the importance of proper lighting, and even how to preserve artwork through the many years you’ll enjoy it. If you’re new to collecting art, these can be great opportunities to get your feet wet and learn more about the best ways to display your new acquisitions. And if you’re already an avid collector? Events like these help to initiate others that might be interested and allow you to make meaningful creative connections in the community. One of the best parts about creative endeavors is collaboration. Acquiring new pieces and selecting optimal frames for them is a rewarding part of the job, McAfee says. “Every piece that comes in, there’s always a story… some emotion, whether it’s good or bad.” Capturing that emotion is something of an art form itself, and helps to better convey those emotions to visitors who can then take the art home and enjoy it more personally. Visit The Art Shop’s website at www. artshopnc.com for more information and to browse some of their collection of great local and rare art! If you’re planning an event and would like to use the space, inquiries can also be made directly on the site.

Second and Green’s Thirsty Thursday Spring Kickoff
By Brian Watkins
Ready to get out and have some fun this spring season? One of Winston Salem’s well-loved taverns, Second and Green, is excited to meet the warmer weather with the return of their “Thirsty Thursday”. As the closest tavern to the Winston Salem Dash ballpark, it serves as a convenient place to hang before the games or even to catch a drink afterward. Second and Green will be playing live music during each Thirsty Thursday, so if you like the ambiance of a lively game night but want to have some conversation with friends during (or after) the game, it’s only a brief walk to the tavern. Guests can expect $1 select drafts, as well as the tavern’s famous “Greenway Shot”. And if you’re looking for something to munch on with the drinks, they’ll be providing free popcorn. If you haven’t been to Second and Green before, and especially if you haven’t been to the BB&T Dash ballpark, you should definitely stop by this season for a drink and a good time watching one of our oldest pastimes. Don’t forget to put April 16 on your calendar – it’s the first game of the season at the Dash, starting at 7pm! About Second and Green: Purchased in 2013, Second and Green has always focused on simply providing a great drink experience from a convenient downtown location. Yes! Weekly voted them #1 in neighborhood bars in 2014, something they hope to achieve again in 2015. The leadership at the pub are all about the community, and the pub participates in a variety of charity events each year to give back to the city that put it on the map. Second and Green is an active sponsor for the Big Brother Big Sisters Inc. of Winston Salem, which has mentored local children for over 100 years. As the nation’s largest volunteer mentoring network, it has strived to create relationships with lasting effects on the young people that are a part of it. 83% of former mentees say that their Big Brother or Big Sister instilled values in them that have guided them throughout their lives. It’s important to have good role models early on, particularly for children who may not have immediate family members to turn to. These sorts of values shape the leadership of tomorrow, which is a win for everyone. Second and Green will also be participating in this year’s Color Run, which has been called the “happiest 5k on the planet.” Proceeds will be donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters to further their mentoring efforts. Combinations like this are a way for the community at large to get involved. Not everyone can or wants to be a mentor, but it’s a great time of year to get in shape and try out a 5k, and doing so can still benefit the youth through fundraising. For more information, visit Second and Green’s Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/secondandgreentavern or call (336) 631-3143! Detailed event information available at www.336events.com

Organization for survivors of abuse
Renee Minx sharecarebearsxo@gmail.com (336) 402-1212 Donate: www.gofundme.com/sharecarebear www.facebook.com/sharecarebear Instagram: @bearssharecare Formed in the Triad, the Bears Share Care is an organization aimed at helping survivors of abuse that have suffered physical or emotional abuse. One of the greatest challenges in cases of abuse is overcoming the lasting effects that shape the person’s future as much as the past. Bears Share Care’s mission is to provide the support needed to grow beyond those experiences. Bears Share Care accomplishes this mission by spreading public awareness about the warning signs of abuse, the detrimental and lasting effects it can have, and providing resources and affirmations to those affected to help in their daily pursuits. Public fundraisers and social media outreach have gone a long way to champion this cause, creating over 1000 local followers and some wonderful opportunities for those in the community to get involved. The next fundraiser will be April 14 from 5pm to 10pm at Elizabeth’s Pizza at 5605 West Friendly Avenue. If you’d like to get involved please stop by or spread the word.
