THAI HARMONY:
Thai Most Harmonious By Timothy G. Beeman II
I
f you have driven down Liberty Street in the last 8 months, you have probably noticed a change in landscape when it comes to the Liberty Plaza Building. Many of the locals call it the “SHARP Building” because of the placement of the extralarge SHARP sign out front. No matter what you call the building, you are aware of the Asian restaurant that occupies the northwest corner of the ground floor.
Until December, 2015, that was Xia Asian Fusion. Now, thanks to the entrepreneurial Nui Ruangrat and her mother, Aratporn, whose friends call her ‘Rose,’ the restaurant has moved from an Asian fusion fare to a predominately Thai menu. And, the Ruangrats are very excited about this. Apparently, so are the customers. When I walked in to conduct my conversation with Nui, I was waved at by a smiling man who told me that I was in for a treat. He was quite energetic about that, too.
do not. For example: the Golden Curry Puff, Shrimp & Crab Spring Roll, Kao Soy Thai Curry and Bison Thai Basil are items that will be tough to find elsewhere. But, When asked about what sets Thai Harmony what else makes them unique in the area? apart from the other Thai restaurants, Nui “We’re not trying to be like other Thai was quick to tell me that Thai Harmony has restaurants. We want to be Thais cooking things on their menu that other places (Continued on page 16

THAI (Continued from page 12)
Thai,” says Nui. You’d think that would be a no-brainer, but I get the feeling that it isn’t. Some of the spices used in the restaurant are grown in the Ruangrats’ back yard.
The cuisine is all Thai, except some Chinese items for lunch. They also have a full sushi menu with a plethora of Nigiri, Sashimi, Maki and hand rolls; everything to tame your sushi-craving palate. They have dine-in lunch specials, lunch bento boxes and lunch sushi specials. Their dinner menu is quite extensive with anything you can think Thai; curries, noodles, Authentic Thai and Modern Thai. Really, it’s all in there. There’s also a brunch on Sunday that features choices like buttermilk waffles topped with honeysriracha chicken tenders, Eastern Thai-style Eggs Pan with Chicken Basil and crab and shrimp omelet, just to name a few. Thai Harmony has six craft beer taps, over 20 beers in bottles, over 20 wines, hot and cold premium sake and full ABC permits for your mixed drinking pleasure. There’s also the TV Wall that you can watch your sporting events and other interesting happenings.
When I walked in, there was a definite Asian feel with large light covers and red walls. It was a little odd to have “oldies” playing through the sound system but it made sense, really. It only added to the comfort level from the rest of the vibe of the restaurant. It’s welcoming and inviting. I think they’ve got a good thing going and I think they’ll do quite well there.
Thai Harmony is located at 102 W 3rd St, in the Liberty Plaza (or “SHARP”) building. They are open 7 days a week: Monday through Friday: 11a-3p & 5p-10p, Saturday: 5p-10p and Sunday: 12p-9p. You can find more about Thai Harmony by visiting their website: www.thaiharmonyws.com 16 | Detailed event information available at www.336events.com

Baba Budan Coffee IPA from Appalachian Mountain Brewery & Fonta Flora Brewery
From Spencer: Dark Horse Brewery started as a restaurant in This month we sampled the Baba Budan Coffee IPA that is a collaboration between Appalachian Mountain Brewery in Boone and Fonta Flora Brewery in Morganton. This beer is named after a merchant & smuggler from the 17th century that brought over coffee seeds from Yemen to India. This West Coast style IPA with about 40lbs of roasted coffee from Express News in Boone is very well balanced for this style. Burst of citrus notes at the beginning of this beer that blend into a nice roasted coffee flavor. It finishes with notes of pine and tropical fruit. Another beer I really enjoyed from two of the best breweries in NC! From Tim: The look of this beer is deceiving. You think “coffee IPA” and you think it’s going to be dark, right? It’s really a very light golden brown. Its flavor is also deceiving. Sometimes coffee can be overpowering but on this it’s a great balance and you’re not getting it all up front, that’s reserved for the IPA’s hoppy notes, but even that is subtle. The flavor in this brew is very balanced. While the mouthfeel and texture are consistent with an IPA, the flavor finish is definitely that of a porter or stout. 40lbs of coffee is a lot of flavoring. I rated it 4.25 pints out of 5. I’d have many more. Drink responsibly. Slànte! _________________________________

Event Goers: 8 ways to Avoid a Ticket Scam
With these tips, avoid purchasing fraudulent tickets:
I
t completely slipped your mind to pick up tickets to that awesome concert and now there are no more. What to do, what to do? Many consumers turn to ticket brokers and the ticket resale market to snag seats to sold-out concerts, sports games or area events such as a beer festival or Color Run. Purchasing tickets from secondary markets can lead to a great deal and some great fun, but can also be risky. Event goers should be wary when purchasing from a stranger or when a deal sounds too good to be true. Not only could this result in a loss of money, but you could miss out on precious memories.
Purchase from the venue. Whenever possible, use the official ticket sales agent for the venue. This means once you hear of an event you really wish to attend, make a note and set a reminder in your phone so you don’t try to buy too late. Many now offer secondary sales options, as well. Know your source. Know the difference between a ticket broker (a legitimate and well-known reseller), a ticket scalper (an unregulated and unlicensed ticket seller), and a scammer selling fraudulent tickets. Look ticket brokers up on bbb. org to learn what other customers have experienced. Check to see if they are a member of the National Association of Ticket Brokers (natb.org). Verify your ticket. Verify your ticket by paying a visit to the arena where the event will be held. Present your ticket to “Will Call” (customer service) and they can verify if your ticket is legitimate. Do an Internet search for the name of your event to see what others are saying. If you find that past events have been canceled with little recourse, this is a red flag! Make sure you need a ticket. Some tourist or city events are free and do not require a ticket. Don’t let a ticket or street vendor convince you that you need a ticket to get into the event. Always check with the host or event location to confirm that a ticket is even necessary. Buy only from secure vendors. Look for the lock symbol in the web address to indicate a secure purchasing system. Don’t click through from emails or online ads; a common scam trick is to create a web address that is similar to a wellknown company. If your event host redirects you to a third-party ticket broker, confirm that the ticket broker is selling tickets at a price that is listed clearly and always read the site’s fine print.
Know the refund and guarantee policies. Only purchase tickets from a reseller that provides clear terms of the transaction. Pay special attention to policies regarding late arriving tickets or tickets that do not gain you admission to the event so that you can gather any required documentation to support your claim.
Use payment methods that come with protection. Use a credit card to purchase tickets so you have some recourse if the tickets are not as promised. Debit cards, wire transfer or cash transactions are risky. If you pay in these ways and the tickets are fraudulent, you likely won’t be able to get your money back. Don’t fall for too-catchy ads. When you search online for tickets, advertisements for dirt-cheap options will often appear. Use good judgment – some of these ads are going to be scams, especially if the prices are uncommonly low.
