Hutch & Harris:
A Familiar Place with a Bar on the Side By Timothy G. Beeman II
On February 28, popular downtown Winston-Salem restaurant, Hutch & Harris, will celebrate their ninth anniversary. Why that date? Because it is Fat Tuesday. It doesn’t matter on which date Fat Tuesday falls on each year, that’s the anniversary of Hutch & Harris. Nine years later, they have become a staple for downtown dining and nightlife. In August, 2015, owner Greg Richardson opened the Side Bar a large extension to the restaurant that doubles the size, adds extra dining seating, a raw bar and an impressive libations bar. The Side Bar offers fresh-shucked oysters, steamed mussels, craft cocktails, an extensive wine list and
a unique craft beer menu. The Side Bar is open during the day for lunch, as well. It is not unusual to see lunching folks in suits and ties sitting a table, or even a few bar stools, away from diners in hardhats and hard-toed boots. About the atmosphere and mission of Hutch & Harris, Richardson said, “we’re here to provide Winston-Salem with a ‘confident’ restaurant. They want a place they will know what they’ll get; that they’re familiar with.” He also said that it is an establishment that younger patrons can enjoy and the older ones, as well. The Side Bar is well lit, with ample space and comfortable seating. There is a small lounge area that separates the casual, intimate dining room from the festive and wide-open bar area. In that lounge, there are a few video games/pinball machine to entertain those so inclined. And, speaking of fun and games, Hutch & Harris has trivia every Monday, 7:30-9:30pm. They also pipe in music to the Side Bar area. They do not offer live music, as there are plenty of other places in town for that. They want to concentrate on creating a communicative atmosphere and the piped music allows for better conversation and it does not take up extra space that could be used for patrons.

HUTCH & HARRIS
Continued from Page 6
They have a nice outdoor seating area right on the bustling sidewalks of Fourth Street. There’s plenty of people watching and you can enjoy the food and beverages that Hutch & Harris offer. They have a new pergola that they’ve installed to add some ambience to the patio and even have a sun screen to block the sun during the few hours that the sun beams down onto those seats. It’s a well maintained area. Richardson said that chef Lucas McGill and his staff have recently changed the menu mixing a bit of the old with the new. Classics such as their Moravian Chicken Pie and the El Kentucky sandwich are definitely still on the menu. It would probably create a public outcry of foul (or is it fowl?) to remove those items. New items include a nice hummus, crab-stuffed shrimp, a ribeye steak, a tuna steak, new Greek items and new prime beef burgers. Richardson said that customers were responding well to the new menu. Manager Kirsten Olson says that the great advantage that Hutch & Harris has is how approachable they are. “Burgers, entrees, seafood and so on… We try to be everything our customers want us to be [in a restaurant],” she said. And, the menu is extensive but it is not confusing; it is pretty straight forward. That approachability doesn’t stop with the food, either. Olson explained, “We are very much like a family. We are lucky to have the staff that we do, who are equally committed to the success of this place as we are.” That, she said, contributes to the friendly atmosphere of the bar. Olson recapped a few charities and causes that Hutch & Harris has supported and continues to support today: the Winston-Salem Symphony, WS Chamber, Piedmont Craftsmen, Summit School, Brenner Children’s Hospital, Habitat for Humanity and several animal rights groups. Olson also wanted to make sure the customers were thanked properly. “We want our loyal customers to know how much we appreciate them. We were one of the first places in this (current) era of downtown and since then, plenty of others have opened. But, our customers keep coming back. We want them to know how much they mean to Greg and his staff.” On February 28, Hutch & Harris is having specials all day. It will be a New Orleans-themed party with NOLAinspired food. You are all invited. You can try their new menu, have a beverage and enjoy the nightlife at Hutch & Harris by visiting them at 420 W Fourth Street. It’s not just their anniversary, it’s a celebration of them and their customers. You can also find them and their menu at www.hutchandharris.com. 8 | Detailed event information available at www.336events.com

“A Pleasant Experience for Everyone” Family, Friends, and Community
By Gary Jacques
Smith & Co. Consignment focuses on family, friends, and community service. Owner Lisa Smith takes pride in all the details, from decorating to being with customers. She loves all sections of the store. Lisa’s consignors offer home décor, housewares, furniture, and antiques. They also carry men’s and women’s clothes. “Women love to come in and browse.” “I’m very trustworthy. I do the best for consignors and provide a safe place to shop, with a pleasant experience for everyone.” Smith & Co. Consignment is located at 1515 Union Cross Road, Kernersville, NC. They will celebrate their 2 year anniversary in April. Lisa studied the consignment industry for 8 years, taking accounting classes, speaking with business owners, observing how merchandise was displayed, noting what brought in customers, store sales, and what didn’t work. She admits starting out was NOT easy. “As difficult and scary as it was for me to open this shop, it has truly been a blessing. So many wonderful friendships have been made. I now know that doing this has a far greater purpose. It is more than just consignment. We are brought into each other’s lives for a reason. This shop is the avenue being used for that purpose. “ Her husband Tim has been supportive. Tim, a woodworker in his “spare time,” full-time employed in industry, paints and builds items. Many are in the store, including the Smith & Co. sign behind the front counter, and much more. Parents of 4 children ranging in age from 14 to 20, Lisa emphasizes that raising their family has always been a priority. There are connections between Lisa

and employees Robyn Ferris and Ruth Beeson. Lisa was an assistant to Robyn, a longtime teacher. Robyn taught Lisa’s oldest son in preschool. Robyn has excellent customer service and organizational skills. Ruth was also a teacher, with Lisa as her assistant. Ruth has an interior design degree and is very knowledgeable in the furniture industry. She has an excellent eye for home decorating, which has been a tremendous asset. When Lisa decided to become a consignment store owner, their friendship proved to be an asset to Smith & Co. Consignment. It is obvious after a few moments with this “dynamic trio” that their enthusiasm, knowledge, smiles, and positive attitudes bring customers into their location. Lisa’s philosophy is: “Friendships are made. This is a blessing, more than a consignment store”. Giving back to the community is an essential element of Smith & Co. Consignment. The Salvation Army is the recipient of unsold housewares. Shalom Project, based at Green Street United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, picks up unsold clothes. Shalom Project offers a FREE clothing closet for the needy in the Triad. Shalom Project has a “Circles” program that teams people in poverty

Baby Bolo’z / A Taste of Cuba “Takin U Beyond Da’ Heat” Terrific Cuban Food-Take Out With Care and Passion
By Gary Jacques
B
aby Bolo’z owner George Lopez is passionate when discussing his love for family, friends, and especially cooking Cuban food for customers. George has great pride for putting a smile on customer’s faces as they bite into made to order Cuban specialties. All ingredients are fresh and purchased locally. Lopez is a member of Goodness Grows, using everything grown in North Carolina. Shortly, George will have a presence at the Piedmont Farmer’s Market in Colfax on Sandy Ridge Road. Lopez moved to North Carolina from New Jersey after visiting a friend in 2008. He grew up in Peterstown (The Burg), a suburb of Elizabeth, New Jersey. George’s first experience was at Barrone’s, an Italian Deli in Elizabeth. He was able to learn the craft of cooking and mixing ingredients. George felt the passion instantly. He is 3 years at the Pinecroft Road location. George is an “everyman” in the sense that he decorated and constructed the Baby Bolo’z store and can fix or MacGyver just about anything. He is in the process of designing an inside mural of the Plaza De
Las Americas in Havana, Cuba. All of his signature creations are $2.50. Lopez keeps costs low as a one person operation and believes firmly in the personal touch, focusing on everyone’s taste for healthy food. Everything is cooked to order. Nothing is fried nor does he cook with salt. For those who call ahead, he will do special orders during off hours, being available 24/6. George learned to cook from his father, following him around the kitchen. He speaks fondly of his father’s positive influence as a role model. George’s Dad has dementia. He visits his father in a nursing home, bringing Cuban dishes lovingly prepared. George’s Dad’s smile drives his

FOOTHILLS BREWING JADE IPA
From Spencer: We kick off the year with one of the best beers made in the state! The Foothills Jade is named after the Pacific Jade Hop but also is dry-hopped with Chinook and Citra hops. This is a dry IPA that has big notes of tropical fruit and pine aromas. Moderate to heavy on the bitterness that pours a nice white cap head. The finish has a peppery mouthful that blends in perfectly with the body. This is how an IPA is made to perfection.
From Tim: We had this on The Less Desirables, and I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of IPAs. It’s just not my favorite style. But, I appreciate the beer process and you have to give props to Foothills for putting this beer together. I don’t rate only on preference, but on how well the brewer(s) did in staying with the style they were trying to produce. I drank two of these and I did actually enjoy it. Because I think Foothills did a good job with this style and this was a good brew, I’m rating it 3.75 pints out of 5. Continued on page 25

BABY BOLO’z cooking passion. George’s mother, who passed away from dementia, attended UNC Pembroke and often reflected on the beauty of North Carolina. Lopez also appreciates the scenery of our area. Lopez is also a caregiver for his longtime friend Cheryl. They met at age 13. Cheryl is a cancer survivor and has multiple sclerosis. Cheryl and George state that the ingredients in his All Natural Baby Bolo’z Cilantro Hot Sauce and Marinade (approved and licensed through the Department of Agriculture) helps contain inflammation and other symptoms, providing many other health benefits She is a vibrant soul and has a winning attitude that is inspiring. George, 52, has led a diverse life. At age 22, he began taking cross country bus trips to learn and perfect his trade. He has lived and worked in several locations, including Beverly Hills, CA, Coral Gables, FL, New York, Ohio, Colorado Springs, Co, and New Jersey. George has cooked for body builders, entertainment stars, and was an extra in a Rap Video with Ice T and Ice Cube for the movie Trespass. He’s competed in Strongman competitions and raced muscle cars. Lopez served almost 10 years in prison. George cooked for inmates, wardens, and guards. Everyone who sampled his dishes knew that “magic” was being created. George is the ultimate bounce back person. He has survived 30 injuries and 13 operations. A tiny pair of crutches hangs on the wall from when he was hit by a car the first time at age 7. George was recently using a walker. Through a mixture of his Baby Bolo’z sauce and Biofreeze plus the power of positive suggestion, he is healthier today.

Lopez started his business as a one person operation and has remained true to serving all. Lopez gives back to the community, feeding the homeless. “Cook it and they will come.” He believes that no one should go hungry. His passion for helping others and sharing is obvious from the moment you walk into Baby Bolo’z. Lopez is attempting to reach out to the Cuban community through the historical and cultural societies in Greensboro. “You got to have love and passion (Cubans call it Sazon) that you can taste in the food”. The taste, the pleasant aroma and excellent Cuban coffee, combined with a winning smile, will make one come back to Baby Bolo’z often. All generations eat at Baby Bolo’z. He is building a patio that will include outdoor seating in the spring. Personal creations include Baked Empanadas (a personal favorite) - Chicken, Turkey, and Pork; Cubinis - (mini Cuban Sandwiches) with slow oven roasted pork; Pinwheel Panini Wraps (Black Forest ham, pepperoni, spinach, marinated roasted peppers with 4-cheese blend); and Cuban Cordon Bleu Panini Wrap (Black Forest ham, chicken, and Swiss or Provolone cheese). Each wrap or sandwich is $2.50; 2 for $5.00; 6 - $15.00; and 12 - $30.00 with a FREE container of Baby Bolo’z sauce. Delivery is available. You must book 1 day in advance. Baby Bolo’z is available for light catering. For further information, please call George Lopez at (908) 577-7539 or go to: Facebook or babyboloz.wix.com/hotsauce.
