A Year-Round Taste of Local Goodness at the Triad Farmers Market Visiting the local Farmers Market is a popular weekend outing during summer months, but what many Triad residents may not know is that several of the regular merchants offer yearround products that are definitely worth a sample. The best thing about the Farmers Market is the fresh, local products that you just can’t find anywhere else. In this spirit we wanted to highlight four of these all-year merchants found in the Market Shoppe every weekend (and in some cases during the week).

Cedar Hill Farms has been in the Market Shoppes area of the Farmers Market for roughly 20 years, carrying a variety of fresh produce year round for Triad shoppers. They carry

everything from canned goods to meat, eggs, and cheese. These are good staple items for any time of year, making it a regular stop for many Farmers Market shoppers each week. Cedar Hill is open at their stand in the Market Shoppes every day, and can be contacted at (336) 6684455 for questions about product availability. If you haven’t stopped to have a look at Grissom Leather’s selection of handmade leather products, make sure to do that on your next visit to the Farmers Market. Everything is custom, and owner Shane Grissom makes everything from belts to guitar straps and purses. All of Shane’s products are made using high end leather that is (Cont. on pg 14)

Twin City Stage Presents: Pride and Prejudice

Additional performances will be held February 7-8 & 12-15. Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 pm, and Sunday matinees are at 2 pm. Tickets are $25 for adults and $22 for seniors and students. Group discounts are available. Finding a husband is hardly Elizabeth Bennet’s most urgent priority. But with four sisters, an overzealous match-making mother, and a string of unsuitable suitors, it’s difficult to escape the subject. When the independent-minded Elizabeth meets the handsome but enigmatic Mr. Darcy, one question prevails: can they possibly look beyond his pride and her prejudice to make the best match of all? Jane Austen’s classic 1813 novel comes to life in this refreshingly fast-paced and engaging new adaptation by Jon Jory. Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton, LLP will sponsor the run of Pride and Prejudice. An Opening Night Reception, with wine provided by Raffaldini Vineyards and hors d’oeuvres provided by Triad Community Kitchen, will begin at 7 pm on Friday, February 6, in the lobby.

Twin City Stage will welcome volunteers of the Susan G. Komen Northwest NC Race for the Cure to the Sunday, February 8 matinee (Cont. on pg 10)

more resistant to scuffs than typical retail equivalents, so the beautiful custom work will weather many years of use. Grissom Leather is available by appointment primarily, so if you’d like to see some products or talk to Shane about custom leather products, contact him directly at (757) 675-9180.

You can find Jammin George at the Farmers Market six days a week. As you might guess, he sells a savory variety of jams. He’s known for flavors you won’t see in stores, such as Pear Ginger, Strawberry Rhubarb, and Tangerine Cranberry. Greensboro’s Lucky 32 restaurant even features Jammin George’s jams for Sunday brunch. Beyond those sweet treats, he also sells hummus faithful to his Lebanese heritage. George says he loves to make fresh, authentic food similar to what his grandmother made for him when he was a young boy. Contact George directly to see what new flavors he’s cooking up at (336) 638-3323! Great locally made items that offer a refreshing change from what you see at the grocery store are a consistent theme with the Market Shoppes merchants, and Goat Lady Dairy doesn’t disappoint. Goat Lady Dairy has sold handmade spreadable cheese at the Farmers Market for 3 years. There’s a spread for every occasion in their lineup, ranging from cheeses with a kick to those with a sweet finish like their fig and honey blend. Other popular flavors include marinated chives (great for entertaining) and a new goat cheese aged for 3 months that is similar to parmesan. Shoppers can reach Goat Lady Dairy at (336) 824-2163 with questions or suggestions. Detailed event information available at www.336events.com

Looking for a Different Way to Celebrate Valentine’s Day? By Sara E. Butner

That special someone in your life deserves a truly special Valentine’s Day – but where do you begin? The Triad is overflowing with creative, sometimes offbeat events for couples and families to celebrate the holiday. The popular paint-your-own-pottery studio The Mad Platter, located in Greensboro, offers its annual Valentine’s Date Night special on Saturday, Feb. 14. From 5-10 p.m., you can enjoy a relaxing evening of painting pottery with your sweetheart. The studio offers a choice of unfinished pottery pieces, which you can paint in your choice of colors. The Date Night Special includes free chocolates, beer and wine. Reservations are required; call 336540-9823. The Mad Platter is located at 2921 Battleground Avenue. For more information, visit their website at www.madplatterpottery. com. Couples can also enjoy a romantic evening while giving back to the community at the Dancing with the Spouse event at Royal Expressions on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. The semi-formal dance for adults includes an optional dance competition, desserts, beer and wine. The cost is $30 per couple, or $40 if the couple comes to a dance lesson one hour before the dance. Proceeds will benefit the school’s scholarship fund, which

was started last year to assist students from low and middle income families. Royal Expressions is a 501(c)3 non-profit that through teaching dance inspires students to reach their fullest potential. The dance will be at Royal Expressions School of Dance at 1220-E Battleground Ave and tickets can be purchased at http://bit.do/reboxoffice.

The Greensboro Symphony will celebrate Valentine’s with something a little different: The Classical Mystery Tour, a Beatles tribute. The full show presents some 30 Beatles tunes sung, played and performed exactly as they were written. Hear “Penny Lane” with a live trumpet section; experience the beauty of “Yesterday” with an acoustic guitar and string quartet; enjoy the rock/classical blend on the hard edged “I Am the Walrus.” From early Beatles music on through the solo years, Classical Mystery Tour is the best of The Beatles like you’ve never heard them: totally Detailed event information available at www.336events.com

live. The concert takes place at Westover Church at 8 p.m. on Feb. 14. Learn more at www.greensborosymphony.org. The Winston-Salem Symphony also has an event on Valentine’s night: The Crazy Arc of Love, featuring guest conductor Stephen Mulligan and guest vocalist Storm Large. Described as a “sultry siren,” Large is known for being a finalist on the CBS show Rock Star: Supernova. For a sample of what you’ll hear, the Symphony’s website features Large’s cover of Cole Porter’s “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” a deeply haunting ballad rather than the uptempo swing of Sinatra’s signature rendition, backed by a richlyscored orchestra. The concert takes place at Reynolds Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. More information: www.wssymphony.org. Also in Winston-Salem, several community theatres are opening productions in February. Twin City Stage presents the timeless romance Pride and Prejudice (see story on p. xx), and the non-profit theatre The Stained Glass Playhouse is producing the Tony and Pulitzer-winning comedy/drama Clybourne Park on the first three weekends of the month. Clybourne Park spans two generations 50 years apart. In 1959, Russ and Bev are selling their desirable two-bedroom at a bargain price, unknowingly bringing the first black family into the neighborhood (borrowing

In 2009, the same property is being bought by a young white couple, whose plan to raze the house and start again is met with equal disapproval by the black residents of the soon-to-begentrified area. Are the issues festering beneath the floorboards actually the same, 50 years on? Bruce Norris’ excruciatingly funny and squirm-inducing satire explores the fruit of the fault line between race and property. More information and tickets: www.stainedglassplayhouse.org. Triad Health Project: 29 Years Serving Those Affected by HIV/AIDS By Sara E. Butner

In 1986, as the unfamiliar, deadly sickness that had emerged in larger cities first began to appear in the Triad, a group of 14 friends gathered in a Greensboro house to brainstorm ways to help. Their grassroots effort looked for ways to meet the immediate needs of people who had contracted HIV and AIDS, who in the mid-80s still faced eviction and job loss as a result of their diagnoses. “Of course, they never anticipated that there would still be a need for those services 28 years later,” says Ken Keeton, the director of development and community involvement for the Triad Health Project, as the organization is now known. What started as a small group of concerned friends is now United Way-funded agency that reaches thousands each year in the Triad and beyond. The Triad Health Project, based in Greensboro, still serves HIV/AIDS patients who need housing, counseling or medical care. Additionally, THP offers free HIV/AIDS testing each Monday night at its office on Summit Street and sends health educators throughout the community to distribute condoms and promote safer sex. Another health educator connects with users in online relationship communities, sharing advice and resources for HIV education. A case manager is on-site every day at Cone Health’s Regional Center for Infectious Disease. And, since 2000, the Higher Ground Day Center (located in Fisher Park) has hosted programs for those infected or affected in any way by HIV/AIDS. Even today, there’s still a tremendous stigma associated with HIV/AIDS, Keeton says. And many of the people that the project serves face other complications in addition to their illness. About 80 percent live below the poverty line; 50 percent are or have been homeless. “Our case managers have to navigate a whole host of issues unrelated directly to their HIV status,” he says. “Those issues have to be addressed before we can focus on their medical treatment. If someone doesn’t have a roof over their head, they’re not going to think about taking their medication.” A Feb. 21 concert at Somewhere Else Tavern will benefit the Triad Health Project’s programs. The concert features original music by four local bands: Trailer Park Orchestra, The Pretty Ugly, Mortal Divine, The Swamp, Enigmatic Path and Zestroah. It’s sponsored by Moe’s Southwest Grill, Absolute Body Jewelry, Clemmons Florist, Custom Caps, Shirts & More, and 336 Events. “It means so much to us that these groups use their gifts and talents to benefit the Triad Health Project,” Keeton says. “We really depend on this to raise awareness of the ways we serve the community.” Even as the project’s staff and volunteers continue to serve and educate, Keeton says they always have an eye on the future. “All of us are looking to the day when our services are no longer needed because no one is affected by this horrible disease anymore,” he says. What: Triad Health Project Benefit Show Where: Somewhere Else Tavern, 5713 W. Friendly Avenue, Greensboro When: Saturday, Feb. 21 – 8 p.m.; $5 Detailed event information available at www.336events.com
