RiverRun International Film Festival March 30 – April 9, 2017

Winston-Salem is the proud home of one of the fastest-growing film festivals in the South. Now in its 19th year, RiverRun International Film Festival brings criticallyacclaimed, cutting-edge films and talents to the Camel City. Enjoy more than 150 groundbreaking narrative, documentary, animated, and archival films from around the world in 11 days. Find your passion on screen; whether it’s activism, history, music, travel, North Carolina films or the absurd, RiverRun has something for everyone. Academy Awards® Accreditation See films as they compete for Oscar® consideration! RiverRun is an Academy Awards-qualifying film festival in both its documentary and animated shorts categories. RiverRun Jury winners in those categories can apply directly to the Academy for consideration to be nominated for an Oscar! Archival Films and Highlight on Cuban Cinema RiverRun offers the rare opportunity to see classic, silent, 35mm and 70mm archival films on the big screen. Among

the archival film selections this year, The Spotlight: Cuba on Screen curated program will highlight the cinema of a nation only recently accessible once again to our American consciousness, in an effort to better understand the artistic achievements of a nation censored from us for so long behind literal and figurative blockades. Each screening will be introduced by a relevant scholar or filmmaker for additional context, and when available, projected from 35mm film prints. RiverRun Family Day: Apri. 1st - FREE SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS Hanesbrands Theatre – FREE Come early and join our friends from SECCA for hands-on interactive artmaking activities from 9 - 9:45 AM before the show and stay for the animated shorts screening at 10:00 a.m. Peppercorn Theatre at RiverRun 1:00 pm at Hanesbrands Theatre – FREE Peppercorn Theatre will present the short stage play before the screening of Stick Man an Animated Short

As of December of 2016, BohoBlu officially stepped onto Elm Street in downtown Greensboro. BohoBlu is conveniently located across from The W on Elm and next to Cheesecakes by Alex. Since this location’s opening on Elm Street, BohoBlu has extended its hours in order to successfully participate in three consecutive First Friday events. Twin City Slice is a fresh new idea in keeping things simple. In our historic building at 214 W. Fourth St. we prepare pizza by the square. Loads of Whole Milk Mozzarella on a medium thick fluffy crust . You buy it “WITH” or “WITHOUT” pepperoni. It is reasonably fast and economical for those people on a budget and in a time crunch. We all need more time. Perfect for kids and groups. Pepsi products by the bottle and a unique beer and wine list. My Father always told me “keep it simple silly.” Ok - maybe he didn’t use the word silly, but the concept is using the KISS concept and adapted from my favorite pizza shop in Pennsylvania. Twin City Slice is a cool place to wind down, fill up and relax. Check us out on Facebook www.twincityslice.com Call ahead and we will have it ready for pickup. Call ahead we can handle large orders. Figure 2.5 pieces per person. 336-306-2985 18 | Detailed event information available at www.336events.com

Monarch and Forget Me Not Shop

Adults with Creativity Helping Dreams Take Flight By Gary Jacques

ryl Witt

Manager Che

Monarch, located at 651 North Highland Ave., Winston-Salem, provides adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities opportunities to express their creativity. Programs include music, art, photography, technology, dance, and pottery. Monarch is a not-for-profit organization that provides support statewide to thousands of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental illness, and substance abuse disorders. There are several Monarch programs, homes, and behavioral health offices throughout the Triad area. Julia Augustoni, Director of Program Operations for Transition, is in the process of creating community centers at Monarch’s various day site locations. Community programs place an emphasis on volunteering with community programs like Senior Services Meals on Wheels where they often run as many as 10 daily routes providing meals to seniors in their homes. Monarch participants do assembly and packaging for the Health Department.

Monarch partners with Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Centers for social and volunteer opportunities. Monarch participants also volunteer with Public Health and the Humane Society. Local nursing homes enjoy getting together with Monarch participants through music activities. Sharon Burns, Director of Program Operations, states: “Seniors put in special requests. They love the music and have a ball dancing. Participants love giving to the seniors and volunteering overall.” Monarch is also part of larger events, such as the Chili Cook Off for Special Olympics. The Salisbury Ridge location-Choices Program, took home first place. Monarch holds events such as the annual golf tournament to raise money for special events and opportunities for the individuals supported across Monarch’s service areas. There are daily activities that focus on getting out into the community. The schedule is determined based on individual interests. “People with disabilities enjoy giving back to the community.” Participants in the program love having their friends and family come to Monarch. The creative energy and talent is amazing. Attention to detail and pride in workmanship is evident. They also participate in Red Nose Day, a national fundraiser for heart awareness. Friends and parents walk in the local Heart
