West End Opera House: Winston Salem’s Neighborhood Pub

Don’t let the name fool you; the West End Opera House is a private bar that keeps it simple yet features just the right amount of niceties for an evening out with friends. The bar has enjoyed a healthy scene of regulars for thirty five years, fancying itself a private neighborhood pub that is comfortable and classy. Advertised for “The Best Drinks in Town”, you will not be disappointed by the generous pour that these bartenders serve their patrons. There are a lot of bars in Winston Salem and Greensboro, so what makes West End different? For starters, West End Opera House is a private pub. Membership is very affordable (only $1.00), so don’t let that be a deterrent for this evening scene that packs an eclectic mix. The pub is open 7 days a week from 4pm to 2:30am. The front entrance begins with a buzzer door, after which visitors will immediately notice the dimly-lit atmosphere and dark wood interior. There are four dart boards near the front of the pub, pairing well with the two pool tables and TVs throughout. All of these amenities are free to patrons, which creates an interesting blend of different conversations and activities for all types of groups. The interior walls are covered with an eclectic blend of almost 200 pieces of framed art and other

Theater fans of the Triad should take note of a great production for late March in Winston Salem. The Lost Shepherd is a musical drama that tells the fictional story of a shepherd’s quest to find the Messiah, weaving an inspiring story that is meaningful for all ages. Through the eyes of the shepherd’s journey visitors will see classic New Testament stories come to life with phenomenal acting and a cast of over 150 actors. “This story is told in a beautiful mix of music, acting, and staging,” says Lynn Messick, Music Director at the School of Dance at UNCSA. “It is a production of which everyone should be proud.”

This two hour musical production is directed by Carlene and Michael Kelly, and stars Michael Kelly in the role of the Lost Shepherd. Kelly is joined by a terrific group of supporting cast members, including Ivory Watson, David Brown, Malcolm Melvin, Alfred Tillman, Samantha Strupe, Robert Neal, and Mattie Brock. Featured soloists include Central Triad Church Pastors Leroy Kelly and Michael Kelly, Alfred Clemonts, Lynn Douglas, and Patsy Todd. Now in its seventh annual production, The Lost Shepherd has been honored each year by corporate sponsors such as Chick Fil-A, Texas Roadhouse, and Food Lion. These local sponsorships help cover the production costs and contribute to something truly memorable.

In the spirit of giving, each year there is a benefit performance for charitable organizations in the Triad. Generally over twenty organizations have the opportunity to experience the musical.

decorative items. There’s even an authentic English phone booth with a working pay phone! If you’re more in the mood for quieter conversation while you enjoy your drinks, the back alley “Smoker’s Courtyard” is ideal for that. Nothing pretentious about it – it’s simply a nice spot to have a few drinks with friends and hang out. And if it’s chilly outside, it’s no biggie since the “Smoker’s Courtyard” offers heaters to keep the area warm and toasty. The pub features occasional live music, and hosts special events like birthday parties, St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Super Bowl, and New Year’s Eve celebrations. The consistent ambiance is a big part of the West End Opera House experience. There aren’t many bars in the Triad with such a setup. Most style themselves as sports bars or something akin to a dance club. That’s fine for those types of evenings, but sometimes you just want a simple yet memorable place to unwind, and West End Opera House has filled this niche expertly for many years. Stop by some night when you’re looking for a great drink, a comfortable chair, and some conversation at 853 Reynolda Rd. in Winston Salem. If you have questions or need directions, you can contact West End at (336) 721-0083.
