Annual Beer & Fear Bash at Castle McCulloch By Brian Watkins

It’s back! The fourth annual Beer and Fear Bash at Castle McCulloch will be open to the Triad November 1. Partygoers can enjoy live music, prize giveaways, and multiple areas to celebrate Halloween. If you’ve never been, come and celebrate Halloween with your friends for a night you won’t forget.

The evening will feature musical acts from all over the U.S., including the headliner band This Way to Egress. Other musical acts scheduled to appear include Crystal Bright and the Silver Hands and DJ Silent Treatment. Visitors can come and go throughout the evening, with 12 unique party zones, all showcasing their own scene. This keeps the festivities fresh no matter where you go throughout the 15 acres of fun.

“This show is a great way for everyone to come out and celebrate Halloween in a safe and fun atmosphere,” says Williams Wallace, the show director. “It’s a wild, crazy, fun party in an old castle. What else would someone do for a Halloween party?” In addition to the music and holiday-themed décor, visitors are encouraged to wear their best costumes to the event. Castle staff will be holding a variety of costume contests with over $3,000 in prizes to be awarded for the most inventive and interesting costumes. Local celebrities in (Cont. on pg 14)

PRIDE Winston-Salem Festival Oct 17-19 By Sara E. Butner

PRIDE Winston-Salem returns this fall with its annual free, family-friendly celebration of community and diversity. This year’s PRIDE Festival, which takes place Oct. 1719, is called “There’s No Place Like Home.” It’s the perfect theme for a festival devoted to welcoming all into a safe place and a fun atmosphere, says PRIDE Vice President Brent Morin. “PRIDE festival is a chance for the LGBT community to express themselves, but also to celebrate the diversity of our community and celebrate our straight allies,” Morin said. “We have always enjoyed the fact that Winston-Salem has been a city that accepts our community. PRIDE Festival is certainly for everyone.”

This year’s PRIDE offers both familiar favorites and new events. One major change is that the festival now takes place over three days, beginning on Friday, Oct. 17, with a kick-off fundraiser at the Piedmont Club. The kick-off party, which is expected to sell out, will include music, cocktails and a silent auction. The Club is located on the 19th floor of BB&T Tower, and affords nighttime views for miles in each direction.

Another new wrinkle for this year’s PRIDE Festival is that the popular annual parade will now take place on Sunday at 2 p.m. The parade, which begins at 4th and Trade streets, will be preceded by a drag queen-guided Brunch Crawl through downtown restaurants beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday’s street festival includes a second stage this year, allowing for more live entertainment, a food truck rodeo, and other activities. DJ Naté, an internationally known recording artist, DJ, and “house music diva,”

will perform at 2 p.m. The street festival runs on Trade Street in the downtown Arts District from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

After a day full of entertainment, the Official PRIDE After-Party will take place in the Millennium Center’s basement Speakeasy from 9 p.m. until. DJ Naté will headline, joined by DJ Jerm and DJ Misterbailey. The newly crowned Mr. and Miss PRIDE Winston-Salem 2014 will also be honored. Tickets to the after party are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Tickets to the party and Friday night fundraiser may be purchased at www. PrideWS.org. While PRIDE Festival is a well-deserved celebration and the focus is on lively entertainment and camraderie, Morin says it’s important to remember the challenges that the LGBT community faces.

“The LGBT community is still not afforded the same rights as the non-LGBT community,” he says. “Not every employer is sympathetic to LGBT rights, and not every family is accepting. PRIDE is an opportunity for everyone to celebrate themselves and to showcase to the city as a whole that we’re here. We’re your neighbors, your friends, your family members, and we’re proud of who we are.”

(Annual Beer & Fear Bash Cont. from pg 7) the arts and costumes businesses will also be serving as judges. It’s a fun opportunity to become involved for all guests and check out the creativity of others. If you pride yourself on making the most of your Halloween spirit each year with unique costumes, this is definitely a chance to shine.

In years past, Castle McCulloch has had 5,000 guests attend the Beer and Fear Bash. Some of our popular festivities of years past, such as the famous spanking booth, will return this year. Grinder Girls will be doing on-site presentations, and Angelica Dust will also be putting on a Halloween-themed drag show.

Tickets can be purchased online at castlemcculloch.com. The gates will open at 7pm on November 1 for a full night of memories for a 21 and over crowd.

Stumble Stilskins: Celebrating 10 Years in Downtown Greensboro

Sometimes I feel that I can write or talk about a venue, restaurant, or bar without having to do any extra research simply because I have patronized so many places like that here in the Triad area. I consider myself “in the know” for such places. This month’s assignment is one of those times that I definitely have a leg up (or cup) on what I am being asked to write about.

I have frequented Stumble Stilskins a lot in the almost 10 years that they have been open. I always get a “hello” at the door and a “hello” at the bar. Whether it is for business lunches, celebrating a sale with a co-worker, or enjoying live music, Stumble Stilskins has always been my favorite place to go in downtown Greensboro. I remember long before every bar in town jumped on the craft beer bandwagon, Stumbles was already steering the ship, and that definitely has not changed today. They have sixteen beers on tap, most of them rotating by season, and they always have local North Carolina brews to choose from. (Check the Craft Beer specials on Friday.)

One thing that I did not know about Stumbles was how extensive the “gourmet” burger menu was. Selections like the Green Monster, Pimento Bacon Cheese, and more. The one I was most curious about was the Pretzel Burger. A Pretzel Burger? It’s Stumble’s unique blend of beef, sausage, and bratwurst with grilled onions, kraut, yellow mustard and garlic all served on a Pretzel bun. In addition, Stumble Stilskins also allows you to “build your own burger”, so you can have it your way and then some. All the burgers are made fresh to order and the custom toppings can also be cooked directly in the meat. As a celebration of ten years in an ever-changing business, Stumble Stilskins has updated the rest of their menu. I think they will always be known for their wings, but they do have an ever-expanding list of menu items. They also have plenty of dishes for the health conscious consumer, lots of lean stuff like the Flather Weight, which is all protein and no fat, veggie burgers, and new salads. Stumbles uses fresh ingredients in all their food and is more than just good pub fare. They also have a new Sam Adams sausage and cheese dip and a new spicy bison burger. The bison is 95% lean so you get true cook weight when it arrives to your table.

Not counting calories? Well Stumbles has you covered as well. Popular choices like the Big Meaty, Guido McFlathery, DanO’s double bacon cheeseburger (2 people can share), and the list goes on and on. One more thing I would like to mention about the food is that the kitchen is open to 2am EVERY night!

Stumble Stilskins is also a great place to meet with your friends and catch the game- excuse me- catch all the games. Wed Oct 15, 2014 Stumble’s has all the sports packages and ARTS/FAMILY big screen TV’s so you will not miss a Greensboro Farmers Curb Market: Mid-Week second of the action. Even though you Wednesday Market BUSINESS NETWORKING can catch the games at Stumbles, “it is Maple Springs United Methodist Church: Career not just a sports bar,” says owner Chris Support Network Sessions Flathers. Chris and his business partner Hampton Inn & Suites Coliseum: GMA: Noontime Network Trevor Austin opened Stumble Stilskins The Piedmont Club: Business Excellence ten years ago at 202 West Market Street, Seminar with Steve Raybutrn of Sandler Training an established an upbeat, “come as you “Maximizing Personal Performance” Wolfgang Puck Pizza Bar: GSO Jaycees: Mixer are” atmosphere that downtown was LIVE MUSIC / NIGHTLIFE sorely lacking at the time. Both of the Blu Martini: The Michael Roberto Band guys are New Englanders who met in Cooper’s Ale House: Blues Jam Stumble Stilskins: Mancub Trivia High Point in 1999 while working in the restaurant business, and they are the driving force behind what has become a staple in downtown.

So if you live under a rock and you have never been to Stumbles, or you haven’t been in a while, come on out and help them celebrate a decade in downtown Greensboro. Enjoy a few of the 60 plus craft beers, enjoy some live music (Patrick Rock and Joey Barnes October 17th), or enjoy some of the new menu items that have been added to an already impressive menu. As a patron, I can promise you a “hello” at the door and a “hello” at the bar.

In today’s world, it can be challenging to know the difference between marketing, advertising, and sales. With the multimedia channels that exist, there are some areas of overlap that can cause confusion when it comes to proper budgeting and deciding which to invest in. Let’s talk about the definitions of each of these three areas, how they relate to the million resources that exist in the marketplace, and some examples on how ROI is calculated for each. First, the definitions of marketing, advertising, and sales listed below are currently being taught in universities around the world and are easily found at Merriam-Webster. com. • Marketing is defined as the activities that are involved in making people aware of a company’s products and making sure that the products are available to be bought. This typically refers to sharing a message, vision, mission, and culture, as well as products or services, to the general public creating an overall awareness to one’s company and offerings. We often see this in website design, social media

management, print materials, trade show displays, and company signage. • Advertising is the action of calling something to the attention of the public, especially by paid announcements. This covers broadcast advertisements that we would see on TV, hear on the radio, or read in a magazine, as well as online promoted posts, pay-per-click ads, and graphic display advertisements. They are used to sell and promote a specific product or service for the purpose of converting the visitor into a paying client. • Advertising and Your Small Business is defined as the act of exchanging money for goods or services. This is usually the responsibility of the person talking with the perspective client. That could be a customer service representative, an account manager, a sales representative, and it may even be you, the business owner. Marketing and advertising are often used to generate sales leads and interest to help narrow down the scope of possible clients. This makes the job of a sales rep far easier to produce closed business. When developing a budget for the promotion of your company and its goods

or services, we have to keep in mind that each of these areas require attention to develop an effective long term strategy. It helps to identify your business budget and then determine the percent of growth they would like to experience over the coming year. That percent of growth is directly related to the percent of the business budget that should be allotted in each category for the coming year. When a budget is planned this way, it becomes more fluid, making it easier to adjust to changes in the economy and business structure. It is recommended that a constant 10% minimum in marketing efforts be in place to maintain credibility and consistency in the marketplace, and no less than a 5% allotted toward advertising strategies. Those percentages can only provide growth if you are currently doing less, otherwise they will be a means to maintain what you are currently generating in revenue for your company from your promoted efforts. When calculating return on investment (ROI), it is important to track everything. If you don’t know where a client or customer is coming from, then you can’t properly organize your budget into individual campaigns. There are tracking systems that will record calls so you don’t have to measure and record, just review reports. This will give us our return on the investment. Then we need to know the cost per ad. We subtract the return from the cost and divide by (Cont. on pg 24)

by Teddy Burriss - Networking Strategist

If you build your network properly, it can become one of the your most valuable assets. A car can be replaced, computers are just commodity items, cell phones get replaced every two years, and even your house is replaceable just ask your insurance agent.

Your network is built one person and relationship at a time. You can’t borrow someone else’s network, you can’t pickup a new network at the local big box store, and I doubt Lloyds of London will insure your network. A dying network cannot help you, nor the people in your network. A dying network is almost always terminal. Few people have been able to revive a dying network.

two people are in your network does not mean they know each other or how they can help each other. Because you know your network, you can connect two people who can potentially benefit by the introduction.

#3 - Treat your network with care and respect A strong and thriving network requires that you treat it with respect. This means you can’t abuse your relationship with your network. Abuse includes inappropriate introductions, bombarding your network with irrelevant requests, spamming your network, even talking ill of members of your network to other members. Gossip and negative engagement with your network can kill it off faster than a plague. (Cont. from pg 30)

Therefore, you need to do everything you can to make sure your network thrives so that it never dies. Here are five activities that, if executed properly, will help your network to thrive. #1 - Focus on helping your network When you focus on helping your network, the indisputable laws of karma will always return the favors to you. There are three different focal points that are important for a thriving network. A - Always offer to help your network. B - You can ask your network to help another person, for the right reasons. C - You can ask your network to help you directly, only if you have first focused on points A & B. #2 - Connect your contacts to each other Your network will thrive if you introduce your connections to each other regularly and with honest purpose. Just because Detailed event information available at www.336events.com

(Networking Cont. from pg 25) #4 - Keep your network growing If your network is not growing regularly, it is apt to start dying off. You grow your network by performing the activities in this article and when appropriate, asking its members to introduce you to others who you can help and/or who can help you. This “ask” assumes that you have first focused on helping your network. If your network knows that you care and want to help them, they will eagerly introduce you to new connections so that your network can continue to grow. #5 - Touch your network regularly A thriving network is one that you touch regularly. A large network can not be seen in real life as often as we would like, therefore we must use other tools and activities to touch our network. Social media helps us to do this, but by itself this is not enough. Schedule time every week to reach out to individuals in your network via phone, email, paper letter, invitation to lunch, dinner, or breakfast. Be unique and different when you can. The more you touch your network, the more it will thrive. These are just a few ways to help your network thrive so that it never dies. Do you have any unique ways of helping your network thrive? This educational series is brought to us by Teddy Burriss, a world renowned Social Networking Coach. Teddy delivers a weekly social media webinar - learn more at tlburriss.eventbrite.com.
