Little Pink Houses of Hope, a Week of No Worries
Little Pink Houses of Hope is a national breast cancer nonprofit organization that is based in Alamance County, North Carolina. The founder Jeanine Patten-Cobel is a Stage 3 Breast Cancer Survivor.
The Little Pink Houses of Hope provides something no other organization in the breast cancer community does – week long free vacations for patients and their families. They believe a cancer diagnosis does not just affect the patient, but the entire family. Every retreat is designed to help families relax, reconnect and rejuvenate during the cancer journey. Typically 10 families are chosen and then get together at the location. Retreats range from all over the United States and the Virgin Islands. From Key West, FL to Lake Tahoe, CA. Little Pink Houses of Hope provides all meals, activities and fun. Families attend the week without worries, treatments or fear - just friendships, fun and memories. Little Pink House of Hope have plenty of staff and volunteers called VolunStars.
Katrina Cooke and her two sons were invited to a retreat to Emerald Isle, NC in 2013. Back in December, 2011, Katrina was diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer (Stage 4). After a series of treatments and
surgeries, Katrina has defied the odds and in December, 2016 will be a 5 year survivor from her original diagnosis. Katrina has devoted herself to the Little Pink Houses of Hope as the Gala Chair for the last 2 years. With all she has been through, she hopes she can make someone with a Breast Cancer diagnosis a little easier.
On Saturday, October 8th, 2016 Little Pink Houses of Hope will have the 6th Annual Gala Dancing with the Little Pink Stars. The event will be held at the National Agents Alliance in Burlington, NC. It is currently sold out. It will be a night to remember to help raise money and to change the lives of hundreds of patients and families. Donations can be made on the Little Pink Houses of Hope FaceBook page. The Gala event will be catered by Benders’ Tavern, 4517 W. Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27407. They anticipate feeding 650 people. According to Bender’s Tavern owner Anna Freiburg – “to be part of this is not only an honor - but it puts this in perspective, not only for me - but the Bender’s staff and all the volunteers that help.” Little Pink Houses of Hope Phone (336) 213-4733 Email info@littlepink.org Website www.littlepink.org
Bender’s Tavern - Christmas Charity
FEEDING THE COMMUNITY
Bender’s Tavern opened in February 2010. Their tradition of giving back to the Greensboro community started in December 2010 with Urban Ministry, feeding those in need. Bender’s Tavern is locally owned and operated. Owner Anna Freiberg’s father started the Christmas tradition in the 1980’s when he owned Hams. The family sold Hams to the Irwins and they have carried on the tradition. In 2010 Hams was sold. Anna’s landlord Ken Conrad asked if she would be willing to continue this worthy cause. The first year they fed about 1200
people. In 2015, over 5000 were served. According to Anna, “It’s great that we can do this. It shows how bad the need is in Guilford County. We are ranked number 1 for food needs in North Carolina. We are currently raising money for the holiday meals.” Bender’s Tavern is located at 4517-A W. Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27407. For further information on this event, please contact Anna Freiberg at (336) 292-0080 or Benders.tavern.@yahoo.com. To donate: https://cfgg.org/giving_ opportunities/thanksgiving-holiday-fund

Woods of Terror #1 Haunted House in the United States
“A Haunting Experience”
The Woods of Terror is a haunted house in Greensboro featuring several attractions. Currently rated #1 in the United States by a USA Today poll as the best haunted house. Customers can be scared, inspired, and yes, haunted by the characters lurking within. You can still vote to ensure that Woods of Terror maintains their #1 ranking. According to owner Eddie McLaurin, “Woods of Terror is a haunting experience”. “We have the best actors”. All actors are trained in-house. They have never previously acted in a haunted house. Alan Hopps, from Texas, is considered to be the best haunted actor in the United States. Alan trains colleagues at Woods of Terror in dialogue, movement, and the art of entertaining customers. “Actors are our main reason for our success”, states McLaurin. Woods of Terror has been in business for 25 years. Games, food, and more await those who dare to be “haunted”! Woods of Terror is made up of many segments. See which one will scare you during your visit. NEW-Escape the Terror – Reservations Only!
Called The Mortuary - this is an Escape Room. You’ll be locked in the room. The only way out is to find the clues! Monster Midway
Monster Parade every night at 7 p.m. through the Monster Midway! The monsters parade is led by The Casket Car, Eddie, and Dawn the Snake. It is a must see event! Arachnophobia
Infestation exploits any phobia you can think of-bugs, spiders, and snakes, just to name a few. The experience will be different for each person, whether they fear the dark or close quarters, or snakes, spiders, and roaches. Hope you can make it through! Night Stalkers
Fall is a time for harvest, but they won’t be harvesting corn. The night stalkers will be harvesting their favorite food…. It’s you, good luck! After several years of employment the local company laid off many loyal employees. The loss of their jobs took on a bigger effect than originally thought. Past employees were unable to find other jobs and ultimately lost their homes and were without food or shelter.

Straight to Ale Brewing’s He Ain’t Heffe Hefeweizen From Spencer: Straight to Ale He Ain’t Heffe is produced and bottled in Huntsville, Alabama. This beer is a German style unfiltered Wheat. This hefeweizen is 5% ABV with a slightly banana/clove flavor. Medium bodied with a bubble gum taste that finishes off with a really mild hop presence. Great session beer! From Tim: The Vitamin Sea is a refreshing “sparkling” aWe had this on The Less Desirables and I found it to be a very drinkable hefeweizen. My cohosts questioned as to whether it was a true hefeweizen compared to an amber due to its slightly darker color, but I truly tasted the banana/ clove flavor, thought it had the usual fluffy texture and mouthfeel that I’m used to with hefeweizens, and enjoyed it a good bit. Is it the best hefe that I’ve ever had? No, but I think Straight to Ale has a good beer here and would have more. I’d rate it 3.75 pints out of 5. Spencer Davis is owner of his family’s company, City Beverage, which has been selling fine beer
and wine since 1946. They’re located at 915 Burke Street in Winston-Salem and on the web at www. citybeverage.com. Tim Beeman is co-owner, co-
host and producer of The Less Desirables Podcast and The Less Desirables Podcast Network ft. The Less Desirables, Tart & Tangy Triad, The Beer
Dads, Electric Camel Pod and Fan Interference
podcasts. Find out more on their Facebook page or www.thelessdesirables.com
Try it locally at: Stumble Stilskins, Cooper Ale House, Beerthirty and City Beverage to name a few local places.
