A
ndrews Farms owner, Chef Adam Andrews, grew up working with his family, as young as six years old, in landscaping. He loved being outdoors and wanted to do something that let him be out there in nature. That’s difficult for a chef who also owns two well-known restaurants in a growing city and food community like WinstonSalem, as he’s indoors, a lot. Those two restaurants are Old Fourth Street Filling Station and Jeffrey Adams on Fourth. A want of being outside and a passion to serve fresh veggies to his customers led to the creation of Andrews Farm. He has enjoyed what he’s seen with the farm-to-table movement that has started to happen around the area. But, the farmers, being very small in operation, have to charge a lot to make up for the cost of harvesting and delivering product, and to generally make a living. After observing a friend’s farming setup, he knew he could do something like it on his family’s track of land in King. He bought a greenhouse and he built raised garden boxes, all of which to grow his farm’s bounty. He uses fruit and vegetable scraps, salmon skin as well as shrimp and egg shells from his restaurants and naturally creates his own compost to enrich the vegetable product so he’s not having to use other animal waste or synthetic fertilizers. He also uses organic bug spray so only the bugs are affected, not the vegetables.

Farm to RESTAURANT (Continued from page 12)
Now in his fourth growing season, he’s currently working on carrots, snap peas, lettuce, asparagus, beets and herbs like dill, thyme and rosemary. This summer, squash, zucchini, cucumbers and peppers will be grown. He says his tomatoes are his “thing.”
The Andrews Farm has allowed him to grow and use his own wares and he knows there the product came from, knows how it was farmed and knows what went into or onto it. He’s able to do this while keeping the food costs down for his restaurants while still maintaining the integrity of his farm. He admits that while it started off “just for fun,” it is a lot of hard work. While he doesn’t necessarily sell his harvest to other local restaurants, sometimes he finds he needs to, when a crop is in abundance. He admits he’s still learning and he’s probably doing a lot of things wrong, but it’s hard to argue that it’s working. He’s still experimenting with what works best and what he is only spinning his wheels working on. During his heavy season, which is around June, he can provide about 80% of Jeffrey Adams vegetables, so the restaurant patrons will taste the local freshness. Adam said that it’s a lot of hard work and he believes that the hard work will show in the veggies that he serves at Jeffrey Adams on Fourth and Old Fourth Street Filling Station.

What is Better Business Bureau? Better Business Bureau (BBB) advances marketplace trust by distinguishing businesses that work with integrity; educating consumers on wise buying habits and resolving disputes between buyer and seller. BBB has served our 14-county Northwest North Carolina region since 1959. But while there’s been a local presence for decades, and for more than 100 years nationally; there are still plenty of misconceptions about the nonprofit. For starters, many people think BBB is a government agency. In reality, the 501(c)(6) non-profit organization is a free resource for businesses and consumers and has no legal enforcement authority for our dispute
resolution service. So, how does BBB get things done? The internationallyrecognized brand has the power of influence thanks to its authoritative voice and a reputation for sharing the objective truth on marketplace matters. It’s why consumers listen when BBB says a company is behaving badly. Day-to-day, BBB accredits companies as trustworthy, handles consumer complaints, disseminates information about scams and disreputable business practices and rates companies on an A-plus through F grade scale. With roughly 50,000 business records detailing information on companies throughout northwest NC, BBB’s database is a free source for any consumer looking for a local company to patronize or hire. Tröegs Solid Sender Pale Ale From Spencer: Chris and John Trogner started this brewery in 1997 in Harrisburg, PA. After a few test batches of homebrew they thought of the name for their brewery, Tröegs. This is the combination of their name and kroeg, which is Dutch for the word “pub”. Tröegenator is their flagship beer but they have other great craft beers like: Hop Back, Mad Elf, Dream Weaver and Solid Sender. The Solid Sender is an American Pale Ale weighing in at 5.2% ABV. This is a light copper colored ale that has a bright white head with notes of citrus while finishing with a malty backbone. A little more than a session beer but just right for this style!!
From Tim: We had this on The Less Desirables and to me it seemed it was a little more than just a pale. It wasn’t quite a full-on India Pale Ale but was a little hoppier than I had suspected in a pale. It has the light texture and the light copper color of a pale ale and it was a good flavor, even at about 5.2% ABV. It’s not one that you’d just sit and drink one after the other but it would be good for a few and certainly one of those “post-mowing” kind of beers. I rate it 3.75 stars out of 5. It’s hard to go wrong with a Tröegs beer, right? Slàinte! _________________________________ Spencer Davis is owner of his family’s company, City Beverage, which has been selling fine beer and wine since 1946. What’s the complaint process? Touting an 80 percent resolution rate for the thousands of complaints processed, BBB dispute resolution is an easy and effective way to confront marketplace issues. The free service helps consumers resolve problems while avoiding the high costs of legal action. Once a complaint is filed, BBB sends it along to the business. An initial response is required within 14 days. During this process, BBB staff work to find a resolution that satisfies all parties. Things to remember:
Complaints must be made in writing and can be filed online at bbb.org/ nwnc. You can also call BBB at 336-725-8348 to be mailed a complaint form. Complaints remain on file and are calculated into a company’s rating for three years. Companies must make a good faith effort to resolve each complaint in order to maintain a quality letter-grade. Failing to respond/answer complaints will dramatically affect a business’ BBB rating.

What are BBBAccredited Businesses?
Accredited Businesses are local companies that strive for service excellence and whose reputation is important to them. As a result, these businesses meet the following BBB Standards for Trust: maintain a positive track record, remain transparent with consumers, be responsive, safeguard customer privacy and advertise truthfully. Companies that align with BBB and whose applications are accepted are entitled to use BBB’s seal in marketing efforts to display their commitment to marketplace trust. The fee for accreditation is based on number of employees and covers the right to use BBB’s Seal. This fee also funds BBB’s free consumer services.
To debunk another myth, companies cannot pay to improve their rating or to make complaints disappear. In fact, they’re held to a higher standard due to their commitment to uphold the Standards for Trust. Not all companies are eligible for BBB Accreditation. BBB checks information on the time in business, the company’s record, the business owner and any pertinent licensing requirements for the industry/trade. Only 1,500 businesses throughout the 14 counties BBB of NWNC serves are accredited, and a company’s accreditation is dropped if its BBB rating falls below a B. How can I learn more about BBB? Visit bbb.org/nwnc and follow the group’s social media pages for latest local scam and business information.
