If you are a Greensboro resident, it is hard not to notice the popular selfie spot off of Davie Street. Gina Franco is quickly becoming a household name, and with good reason. She is an incredibly gifted muralist whose talent is becoming widely known around town. Her inspiration comes from those around her, as well as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Cindy Sherman, and Jeff Koons. All wonderfully unique artists. Her work exhibits a few characteristics of these artist. She is truly gifted. I was graced with an interview with this incredibly gifted woman. She is enormously enthusiastic, upbeat, and personable. She is beautifying the community with her vibrant paintings and people are loving it. If you have been on Instagram lately, you have probably seen her work, as well as the massive response that people seem to have towards it. When asked how she got her start in this art, she informed me that she has been teaching technology with Guilford County Schools. She painted a mural for the school and that’s when it all took off. It’s amazing that she has no formal training or background with art, but that hasn’t seemed to stop her. Gina’s spirit and optimism definitely resonates through her street art. Vibrant colors, whimsical designs, and character certainly shows in her work. She is a key player in beautifying Downtown Greensboro. Her fans adore her and are head-overheels in taking selfies and posting them across social media. She certainly is making a name for herself and it is easy to see why. If these last few months are any indication of what is to come, I can honestly say I am excited for what is in store. She has work predominantly displayed around Greensboro. You can find her art in Crafted: The Art of the Taco, two installations outside of The Bearded Goat, two displayed at IRC Greensboro, and one at Westerwood Tavern. There is also a piece entitled “Sad Girl”, this is next to the “Justice for Joey” mural. So as you’re out and about keep your eyes peeled for these amazing paintings. This artist does have an instagram page, please follow, @ginaelizabethfranco .

Xcaret Mexican Grill & Cantina Mexico Celebrated & Elevated!
Walk through the front door of Xcaret Mexican Grill & Cantina and your senses are flooded! The smell of fresh tortillas being made alongside the scent of meats grilling; the riot of color from the huge masks, paintings, and furniture, all made in Mexico; the sounds of people talking and laughing while they soak in the ambiance; Xcaret is far from your run-of-the-mill Mexican restaurant!

I started by asking Juan about their first year. “It’s been great! We’ve had our struggles here with all the rain and cold weather, so many people just don’t want to get out, and with the closing of Business 40, it’s all part of the journey. The weather is improving and we’re seeing folks return. We’ve been getting ready for the crowds!”

XCARET MEXICAN GRILL & CANTINA our main celebration on Saturday the 4th, with some of that spilling over into Sunday. We’ve been working with our suppliers to be able to offer a number of fantastic food and drink specials. We’ll have a Mariachi band playing. We plan to have a big party!” “We have our new catering menu available. We’ve always done catering when people would call in but now we’ve formalized our menu. We’ve added a few things, like our Secret Menu items such as the Mexi Burger, and we’ve expanded our drink menu.” “We’re hoping to have a new patio area ready to roll this summer. We’re working with the City, the Downtown WinstonSalem Partnership, and our landlord to see if we can make it happen. We’ve had tables outside before but we want to create more of a defined space with a bar and seating for people to have a better experience.”

Juan shared he will be catering for the River Run Film Festival being held in WinstonSalem in April. This is a first for Xcaret. He remarked about how well the city has been doing bringing in various conventions to downtown, including a recent comic convention which resulted in a record setting night for the restaurant. I asked Juan what makes Xcaret different? “I think most Mexican restaurants focus on their combinations, like Speedy Gonzalez, or your taco-enchilada-rice-and-beans, stuff like that. Xcaret is more authentic and focuses more on presentation and the quality of the food. We have been strong on drinks since we are downtown. We’ve added a lot more margaritas that represent Mexico. We have one new drink that’s in a large fishbowl with o.j., fresh fruit, then you throw the tequila in there and we put on Cruzan 151 and light it up. People love fire! We’ve added to our tequila selection and are teaching people about the different varieties.” “I don’t think I’ve been to another Mexican restaurant that has somebody making homemade tortillas and you can see them being made through the glass. We get Continued on page 10

you’re getting, maybe because it’s cool or different, that’s what I want to do for them.”
Another feature which makes Xcaret stand out is their furniture. It’s bright and colorful and comes from Mexico. The large masks are painted with authentic rural scenes, famous buildings and other landmarks from Mexico. “I want people to feel like they left Winston-Salem when they come here. They can enter, fiesta, relax, and have a good time,” said Juan.
Juan is excited to see the renovations completed to Merschel Plaza as the main windows in the dining room overlook the downtown park. “This end of our street has been really changing with the two new hotels about to be opened and the park getting a facelift. We have so much variety available to residents and visitors in just our block.”
“Usually when you go to a Mexican restaurant all you hear is mariachi, mariachi, mariachi, which is good but there is way more to Mexican and Hispanic culture. So we change up the music all the time. We’ll play some Spanish pop or rock, on the weekends I’ll go with Salsa. We’ve gotten a lot of compliments on our music.”

When asked about areas to improve, Juan noted Xcaret excels compared to other mexican restaurants, but he’s always looking for ways to make the experience even stronger for his customers. He is constantly looking for new ideas on plating, preparation, cooking, all with an eye toward making the end product even more gourmet. “We eat with our eyes first, so if you’re excited about how it looks or what

Home is Love “I wish you could interview my customers,” said Lisa Smith, owner of Smith & Co. Consignments. Part of that is because Lisa doesn’t enjoy being in the spotlight and part of it is her humility. She doesn’t want to be the person saying all the wonderful things about her shop, but I can attest, she hears it daily. Beverly, the newest member of the Smith & Co. family, was a customer before she was staff. “I told Lisa when I first walked in here, this shop is just magical. There are so many beautiful things that you wouldn’t expect to find in a consignment shop. It’s more like what you’d find in an antique store. The people she surrounds herself with make a difference.” Lisa added, “I didn’t want to be considered a thrift store and I’ve been blessed with clients who have been part of my success. They have helped me by bringing in gently used, high caliber items for consignment.” She smiles the entire time she’s talking. In fact, that is her usual expression. The background music is playing a modern piano version of a classic hymn. She gets so many compliments on the music, which makes her smile some more because she’s happy to feed herself and her clients with the mood set by her tunes. Her faith is what fuels her and sees her work as a ministry to the community. “I had a lady in here the other day who said the song that was playing reminded her of time she’d spent with her grandmother. She was clearly moved and we were touched, too.” “We’re one of the few stores that will come out to your home, so we are now helping more people who are downsizing, remodeling or decorating, or dealing with a parent or loved one’s estate. Bringing the Sexy Supper Club Back to Greensboro
By Kristen Daukas
Close your eyes for a moment and envision a time when going out to dinner was an event that lasted the whole evening. A night full of beautiful settings, laughter throughout, friends visiting other friend’s tables. Foods that made your taste buds sing and were a feast for the eyes. The cocktails were classic and created with flair. An experience that electrified every cell in your body. These places were commonly considered Supper Clubs. Part dinner, part socializing - Supper Clubs were wildly popular in the 1930’s and 1940’s and were more of a destination where you spent your entire evening from cocktail hour to nightclub-style entertainment after dinner. This is the vision the team at LaRue Elm has as they launch an entirely new menu both in the dining room and the bar. I had the opportunity to sit with bar manager, Darrick Rodgers, Summer MacLeod, 16 |
events manager, GM Brad Byers, and Executive Chef, William Parham. If these names sound familiar, there’s a good reason: they’ve all been here before in the 5 years LaRue has been around and have returned to be an integral part of what is sure to be the hottest place to eat and be seen in Greensboro. What can you expect as LaRue reinvents itself into a supper club? Chef Doc and Chef Envy are creating a new menu that
