by Sarah K Wilson Harper’s Restaurant, located at 601 Friendly center, is a well-known gem of a restaurant. Famous for its Southern American inspired cuisine, it is known for its farm fresh and locally sourced farm-to-table approach. The menu changes seasonally based on what produce Whitaker Farms has readily available, and the farm is located in Climax, North Carolina. Whitaker Farms has been supplying Harper’s with farm fresh ingredients for over ten years, and helps to give Harper’s its unique flair and exquisite taste. The restaurant has been serving the Triad since 1993, and customers constantly rave about the top-notch execution and consistency of each favorite dish that is prepared from scratch, in house, even down to each sauce and seasoning. hospitality and and over all great dining experience. HARPER’S RESTAURANT
Harpers has the famous tomato fest which celebrates the long lasting tight knit partnership between Whitaker farms and the restaurant, in addition to celebrating juicy red summer ripe tomatoes known as the “Climax tomato” that are only available this time of year. These ruby reds are a match made in heaven with the signature crab stack that has locals raving about classic dish of irresistible cakes piled high with fresh tomato slices in between. During this time, the BLT and tomato sampler are also back for a limited time as well. Harper’s is very unique in the sense of their artisan-style purchasing, as well as their use of the wood fired grill used to create the perfect texture and flavor on many of the Triad’s favorites dishes. Though the restaurant looks like a chain from the outside, Harpers is as unique as they come because they stick to their core values and source locally from NC and put forth the best possible ingredients and dishes to the Triad. The farm to table concept transcends into everything, like the classic southern desserts such as Apple pie, and of course the famous iron skillet cookie served a la mode with vanilla ice cream. Thursday night is also a unique and special night at Harpers, as they hold their

trivia night with $2 domestics, and $4 gin and tonics. The game starts at 8pm, and the winner receives a gift card for the restaurant for the next visit. The bar menu is also popular on trivia nights, especially the wings that are brined, wood fire smoked, and grilled to perfection. Monday-Thursday: 11:15-10pm Friday: 11:15-11pm Saturday: 11:15-11pm Open for Sunday brunch from 10:30-2:30 with locally sourced farm fresh eggs, $5 mimosas, and $7 Bloody Marys. 601 Friendly Center Rd, Greensboro, NC www.harpersrestaurants.com/locations/ harpers-greensboro

LOCAL HOTELS AND THE GUILFORD COUNTY HOTEL ASSOCIATION GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
Local hotels and the Guilford County Hotel Association give back to the community through a variety of fundraising efforts, volunteer opportunities, and projects such as their ongoing Blanket and Linen drive that allows hotels’ discarded items to help those in need through a variety of local charities. This month they are helping the Out of the Garden Project. Hunger robs children of their potential to grow and thrive every day. In Guilford County, our hunger statistics are staggering, with 2 of every 3 students needing free or reduced cost meals at school. For some, this is their only weekly nourishment. As the largest agency of its kind in the Piedmont Triad, Out of the Garden Project has distributed more than 6 million meals to families since 2009. But the need is still great. Kristy and Don Milholin formed Out of the Garden Project (OOTGP) in their home during the 2008-2009 school year when Kristy noticed several students struggling with food insecurity at their children’s school. The Milholins felt called to make a difference in these children’s lives and began packing weekend meal bags for these students and their families with the help of many friends. Since their humble beginnings, Out of the Garden Project has distributed 11 million meals to local families in need and is now the largest non-profit in the Triad with the mission of feeding children and their families. programs include; Operation Backpack, Fresh Mobile Markets, Food Reclamation Initiative, Shared use kitchen, Urban Teaching Farm and the Summer Feeding Program. Our work is only made possible by committed financial sponsors and more than 800 monthly volunteers every. Serving 3 million meals in 2018 alone, OOTGP’s newest project is the Urban Teaching Farm, opening in November of 2018, we are committed to teaching people how to grow food as well as become more sustainable by having 30 Harvest Boxes (community supported agriculture) committed for 2019. Both the Farm and our Shared Use Kitchen are one-of-a-kind programs as OOTGP re-thinks how to care holistically for those living in poverty. Their Fresh Mobile Markets are taken to more than 19 locations each month in Guilford County, providing families with more than 65 pounds of fresh produce, milk, meat, bread and shelf-stable items to help families in need. Making a Deep Impact on Our Community by Kristen Margo Daukas What started as a small vegetarian buying club in the ’60s by a group of friends in a Guilford College dormitory, Deep Roots Market has since become a brick and mortar business with an incredibly loyal customer base - customers - many of whom are also owners. Many of the first co-op food markets actually began during the Depression-era when food was scarce and communities needed to lean on their neighbors for both
food and monetary support. In fact, towns that had co-ops had far less hunger and poverty during the Depression than towns who did not. Fast forward to the 70s and there was another resurgence of co-ops when the oil spills that impacted our country had people questioning whether the Government was concerned about the impact it had on our environment and food supplies. Currently, the popularity and interest in co-ops is largely driven by the fact that we, as consumers, are much more cognizant of the food going into our bodies with many people opting for plant-based diets and a desire for organic foods, as well as, sustainability, local foods, and community strength. Deep Roots Market
form of a volunteer Board of Directors. Not wanting to leave anyone out of this opportunity, they also have two options for people who may not be able to afford the $100 option. These individuals can either split the $100 into four $25 payments over the year, or you can take advantage of their LIME program where you pay $15 a year until you reach the $100 fee. The LIME program also includes a significant discount on groceries to anyone who qualifies for that program. All of these options are a great way to ensure that anyone who wants to be involved can be involved! Deep Roots Market is making sure that all barriers possible are being removed in order for residents of our area to eat healthily. That commitment to providing healthy options extends beyond the Triad. Deep Roots works with other co-ops across the nation to get lower-priced, organic and natural products for their customers because the competition is fierce with larger retail market stores. When the price of produce and other items becomes so low, the burden of price is placed on the farmers who are growing these items, often putting them in a financially vulnerable position to support their farms and their families. So not only are co-ops like Deep Roots help-

ing provide healthy food to their customers, but they’re also helping better the lives of those providing the food by keeping the focus on fair trade and fair prices. In addition to the full-service grocery store, Deep Roots also offers a walk-up hot and cold bar of freshly made food items, as well as catering platters, dishes and boxed lunches (you can see their full catering menu online, as well as, make special requests). Instead of a morning meeting that features carb-heavy options like croissants and muffins, how about a yogurt parfait bar instead? There is also a community room which can be used for your meeting needs free of charge and can be reserved in advance. They host movie nights on the first Sunday of every month and wellness events in the store on the 4th Wednesday of every month (2nd Wednesday during November and December) which cover a wide variety of topics to help the community live their best, healthiest life possible! If you’ve committed to living a clean and healthier life and haven’t made your way downtown to their location at 600 N. Eugene, there is no better time than now to see all that Deep Roots Market is about and the many ways they help you be healthy and involved in the community!
