GATE CITY CANDY COMPANY CHARMS AS IT LOOKS TO SWEET FUTURE Transforms 100-year-old store into his dream candy shop with eye on candy making expansion. Daniel Weatherington owner of Gate City Candy Company looks over his burgeoning, 1900 square foot, candy empire from behind the case. And he gets animated when he talks about his plans to begin candy making on-site. Gate City Candy Company opened on April 1, 2019. Weatherington says, “it was a four-year process to make it happen and a childhood dream. Over the last we’ll say 30 years, give or take, it’s always been in the back of my mind that I want my own candy store.” A childhood dream realized. “When I was seven or eight years old, little guy, we traveled a lot and we’d go to candy stores. But my dad is one of those dads that would walk into a place like this and say, you can get one thing. And I didn’t think that was fair.” Weatherington hasn’t always been in candy he says, “I was a bail bondsman for eight years and president of the Triad Bail Association. In that position, I was in a lot of meetings in Raleigh with the NC Court Commission, state legislators, ACLU meetings and everything else. From sitting through those meetings, I saw the big picture. In short, bail is coming to an end in North Carolina. As a bail bondsman, you had to go out and find more and more people and drag them in. So you work all day in the office doing paperwork or at the jail doing paperwork, sitting there for hours, trying to get somebody out. And then you go home and have dinner with your family and then you’re right back on the road trying to track people down all night. And I did that seven days a week.” “So I decided it was time to make my move Continued on page 6 Detailed event information available at www.336events.com

when I could. Even after talking to all the other bondsmen in the association saying, look, you know, this is coming. You need to get prepared. Whether that means prepare to fight to the end or prepare to start diversifying whatever you need to do, you need to do it. So even though I don’t write bonds anymore, but I’m still active in the bond industry. Still trying to fight for them.” Four years ago, Weatherington started writing a business plan. He says, “My brother, he’s in the retail industry. So talking to him I was like, what do I do? How do I get this started? Yeah. So I started writing a business plan. I had no formal education on how to write one. So it was literally what the internet can provide. I did all this research on how to write a business plan. And that took a while and then, then you start doing all the research on how to open a candy store. Where to source products, what’s it going to cost, what’s the best thing? And being a bondsman, literally traveling the whole country, chasing people down, I was able to hit candy stores all over the country. So I was able to see what other stores had their store.” Downtown Greensboro has posed a bit of a challenge, Weatherington says, “It’s been a roller coaster. We are good. We’ve had only positive feedback. The local community and the downtown community have really embraced the store. We’ve had a lot of people from the neighborhood, a lot of visitors.” And the future looks sweet for Gate City Candy Company as they add a kitchen and candy making capacity. “Everyone asks me if the chocolate and fudge are made locally. At the moment they are not, but we will be rolling out our own products in these categories as the kitchen is built out and the retail space re-arranged with marble counters taking center stage and we’ll be featuring Mackinaw Island-style fudge.” says Weatherington Find Gate City Candy Company On the Web: www.gatecitycandycompany.com On Facebook: Gate City Candy Company

BULL’S TAVERN STILL HERE DOING WHAT THEY DO By Timothy G Beeman II For seven years, Danielle Bull has been atop the “Bad-Ass Women’s Club” in Winston-Salem. She owns the only female-founded bar in downtown. She has brought live music in an intimate setting back to the forefront of entertainment options. She’s strong, she’s smart, she’s tough. She’s amazing. Bull’s Tavern started in 2012 when Danielle left the “corporate world” and started what she thought was going to be a bar with acoustic/singer-songwriter style music with good drinks and a “quiet” atmosphere.

Well, that idea didn’t last long. She and her dad, Darrell built a stage, a large bar, an inviting space and set out to turn the town upside down. Since then, they have rebuilt the stage, rebuilt the sound system and rebuilt the way bars are done downtown. Danielle is proud of being a diverse bar owner of a very diverse bar in every sense of those words. Her employees come from all walks of life, all orientations, all backgrounds. The music she has in Bull’s Tavern is from many genres, Continued on page 10

including funk, R&B, rock, soul and jam bands. Their customer base is diverse and ever-changing, although you can find a lot of familiar faces in that establishment. Yeah, going strong for seven years. But this past year has seen a lot of changes and adversity not only for Danielle, not only for Bull’s Tavern and not only for her employees. The year saw a lot for the city. The Business 40 closure was huge. One can argue the reality versus fiction of what actually caused the downtown downturn, but the truth is the downturn happened. Business has been down for Bull’s Tavern as it has for everyone, but Danielle is still standing strong. She and her folks are there and they’re still serving the music lovers and drink lovers of Downtown Winston-Salem. The drinking culture has changed. What was popular to drink last year or the year before isn’t necessarily the “hottest” item now. Perhaps it’s not IPAs or Fireball bevvies now. In a recent interview, Danielle said that she was kind of surprised that the biggest selling alcoholic beverage in the country right now is alcohol-infused seltzer water. Having to roll with the punches as to what to stock and what to pull back on is a difficult task but, again, she stands tall and strong, bringing the town what they want. The same can be said about the music scene. Anyone who pays attention to pop culture Continued on page 12

BULLS TAVERN

Continued from Page 10

knows that music is everchanging, nothing stays the same. What people listen to this year may not be the same as their tastes preferred last year. But one has to keep their ear to the ground to know what is coming and how to accommodate the music-loving public. Case in point, in the last seven years, Bull’s Tavern has hosted 2800+ live music events, running the gamut in variety and genre. Bull’s Tavern suffered a huge loss this year. Danielle’s father, Darrell, passed away in May 2019. It was more than Danielle losing her dad. It was the whole bar family losing their rock, their “papa Bull.” The whole team pulled together and kept Bull’s Tavern going through the passing and the community came together for an amazing memorial service on the Bull Family Farm. Even with that, Danielle and Bull’s Tavern are still standing strong. 2019 has tested the mettle of most of Downtown Winston-Salem but Bull’s Tavern has shown perseverance and resilience in the face of hardship. Danielle is still bringing relevance to an everchanging music and bar scene and still showing why she is “Bad Ass.”

Melting the Ice in Winston-Salem Winston-Salem has a long history of hockey that spans over decades and after an almost 10-year gap, last year saw the revival of the beloved Carolina Thunderbirds. Seeing that the area had long supported past teams (fans still show up at games proudly wearing their Polar Twins jerseys!) they knew there was a desire to have hockey back and a venue that was already equipped for ice making. After hosting two wildly popular and heavily attended exhibition games, the plan to bring the Thunderbirds back to Winston went into high gear and the dream became a reality for hockey starved fans. The Thunderbirds did not disappoint fans the first season and this showed with 13 soldout games last season and 1500 season tickets sold for this season. Hockey fans who support professional teams such as the Carolina Hurricanes, Charlotte Checkers, and the Fayetteville Marksmen come from all over the region to watch and support our hometown team and get their ice ‘fix’. How does the team work as it relates to the pros? The Thunderbirds are part of the Southern Hockey League (SHL) and using baseball terminology with Triple-A, Double-A, and Single-A clubs, the Thunderbirds would be a low A - one-half step below how the Winston-Salem Dash would rank. However, the minor leagues in hockey don’t work the same way as they’re not a feeder system into a professional team like the Hurricanes. The players are under contract to play within this league and are able to move within the league via trades and acquisitions but they’re not the property of an NHL team. The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), which is a half step above them, is also unincorporated. Once players hit the East Coast Hockey League, (ECHL) is when they start to become affiliated with the NHL. players in the SPHL are 4 or 5 steps from conceivably playing in the NHL which is obviously very difficult to make given the amount of speed and precision it takes. The ultimate goal of the team owners and coaches is to be able to develop their players to move into the ECHL and several past players have Continued on page 16 14 |

CAROLINA THUNDERBIRDS

Continued from Page 16

The schedule is full of promotions and special nights. In the past, the team has partnered up with the Carolina Hurricanes as well as Lucas Films which helped sponsor a Star Wars themed night. There have been many other special nights such as Veteran’s Night, Cancer Awareness, Scout Night and so on. If there are 30 games, they usually have a theme night for 26-27 of those games. For the holidays, there was a Thanksgiving-themed night and a Black Friday night and you definitely want to mark your calendars and get your tickets for the New Years Eve game. That night will be spectacular for attendees with the puck dropping at 8:35 (instead of the normal 7:35) against rival team Columbus and will conclude with a social hour after the game to meet others, have a drink, and watch the puck drop from the ceiling to celebrate the new year. It’s this kind of creativity and ingenuity that makes the experience worth coming back for time and time again. No matter where you sit, you’ll have a great view as there is no such thing as a bad seat. Even if you’re in the upper corner of the arena, the site lines won’t interfere with watching the action. Tickets start at $10 and the most expensive ticket which is located on the glass is just a shade over $20. Group ticket packs start at $16 and those include a ticket, food, and a souvenir. Parking is always free and souvenirs and concessions are also reasonably priced. If you want to bring a large group, there are group ticket sales available. As you can tell, the Thunderbirds are committed to keeping it at an affordable price point for family night or even a date night!
