MERIDIAN

CELEBRATES 11 YEARS By Timothy G. Beeman II

On Sunday, February 25th, Meridian Restaurant will be celebrating their 11th anniversary party. It so happens to coincide with Mardi Gras “season” so Meridian will celebrate both at the same time. Meridian always does food right and this year’s anniversary feast includes oysters on the half shell, crawfish pie, jambalaya, muffalletta, gumbo file, a shrimp boil, bread pudding with whiskey sauce, King cake and pecan pralines. That’s a lot of food. You get one, you get any that you want. And, probably as much of it as you can stand. There’s draft beer, too. The cost for this magical shindig? $30 per person, all inclusive. Meridian is located at 411 S Marshall Street in Winston-Salem and you can call (336) 722-8889 for reservations. Go celebrate Meridian’s anniversary with great victuals. And, since it is also a Mardi Gras celebration… Laissez les bon temps rouler!

IT IS TIME FOR

HOPSLAM!

By Timothy G. Beeman II

Bell’s Brewery, of Kalamazoo Michigan, has released their very limited batch of their wildly popular yearly brew called Hopslam. While not a NC beer per se, it is loved, adored and sought out by North Carolinians, especially hop freaks. Bell’s is consistently putting out fantastic brews from their stouts and porters to their wheats (Oberon) and IPAs (Two Hearted Ale), but this, ladies and gentlemen, Hopslam, is a Double IPA. 10% ABV and full on flavor. There are honey notes and deep hop profiles. According to Bell’s website, they start with six different hop varietals added to the brew kettle & culminating with a massive dry-hop addition of Simcoe hops. That is a lot of hops. Hopslam, again is a very limited release and when it is gone, it’s gone. You can find them in cans at your favorite local bottle shops and on draft at many of the fine drinking establishments around the Triad. We had this on The Less Desirables and I’m rating it 4.75 pints out of 5. Usually, I’m not a hoppy beer fan, but I love Double IPAs and this is spot on. Get yours now!

This month we are featuring Local Beer, Wine, Spirits, and Coffee that will be that the Big Eat Mac n Cheese Cook Off and Beverage Festival (Feb 24th 2-6p at the Millennium Center) BigEatNC.com Old Nick Williams Farm and Distillery Lewisville NC For over 250 years, the Williams Family has had a truly amazing and colorful journey, from participating in the Revolutionary War to establishing and then losing a world famous whiskey brand to prohibition. The “Old Nick Williams Distillery” continued full operation until prohibition laws were enacted making it illegal to sell whiskey in North Carolina. “Old Nick” was then forced to distribute their products by shipping them out of state. After national prohibition was enacted, Glen’s widow had no choice but to destroy the remaining whiskey and shutdown the distillery. Today the sixth and seventh generation Williams’s family is back in operation on the same location of the original distillery. They have brought back to life their over 200 year old recipes to once again share with the

public. The Old Nick Williams Farm and Distillery is offering historical tours and tastings on Fridays and Saturdays from 11-6 and during the week by appointment. They currently offer their Carolina Whiskey and a Carolina Bourbon in most ABC stores across the state. Come experience a piece of history and enjoy some fantastic NC sprites. Body and Soul Celebrates Black History Month with Authentic African Apparel By Eric Hairston

Body and Soul, a gem located in the heart of the arts district in Winston-Salem has always been a welcome place, laden with cultural items and artwork from Africa. Anyone who enters the store will always feel at home with a warm greeting from the owner Dana Suggs. My many visits to the shop have been more than pleasant, Dana makes you feel like you are family and is informative about the different pieces in the shop. The store is always filled with the sounds of music from one of the many music compilations from Putumayo World Music, a mix of cultural music from all over the world. Being around more than a decade, the boutique has been a staple of Trade street that many of the patrons vouch for (including me) that in Winston-Salem there is nothing like it! From the collection of African art to the great selection of African American literature, The shop shines a light on the rich history of African Americans as well as the diverse and expansive culture of Africa. The shop also has a great selection of African Jewelry, which includes earrings, bracelets, and handmade necklaces. I particularly enjoy the fragrant oils and incense that I use religiously. This month the boutique celebrates black history with Afrocentric apparel along with a 10 percent discount on select items such as Afrocentric Skirts, dashikis, hats, ties, and all traditional and non-traditional African clothing. In celebration of the rich history and contributions to American history, these pieces are perfect for commemorating the many accomplishments of African Americans in the United States--after all, Black History is American History. The shop is located at 545 Trade Street in Winston-Salem. 14 | Detailed event information available at www.336events.com
