The Tempest:

An Island of Music and Magic The UNC Greensboro School of Theatre is pleased to present The Tempest, running February 14-16 and 19-22 in the Taylor Theatre. This production of Shakespeare’s comedy sets the play 12 years after World War II. In a world filled with music and magic, Prospera, a powerful sorceress, embarks on her journey to become whole again. Reality meets fantasy as the royal families of Naples and Milan are shipwrecked on a mystical island inhabited by fairies, spirits, and a fish monster. Prospera conjures up a storm which brings her face to face with those who exiled her 12 years earlier. The amazing jazz music that accompanies the production symbolizes the free-flowing spirit of the characters onstage, as well as the struggle of Prospera’s inner psyche. Most of the leading roles reflect gender swaps which provide opportunities to female student actors and highlights women in roles of power. This play about family, forgiveness, and classism is told through the charm of both magic and comedy. It is a spectacle not to be missed. At the helm, award-winning director, Ashley Sarver, brings an exciting and innovative vision for her production of The Tempest. As a former jazz musician in Chicago who performed with the Freddie Franken jazz trio, Sarver will be composing jazz music which will underscore Shakespeare’s text. Sarver is in her second year as a candidate for a Master of Fine Arts in Directing at UNCG. She is a graduate of Olivet Nazarene University and has won awards for directing, playwriting and teaching. Sarver is excited to bring a fresh and ambitious approach to The Tempest. Tickets are available online at www.uncgtheatre.com, by phone (336.334.4392), or in person at the UNCG Theatre Box Office located at 406 Tate St., Greensboro, NC 27412. The hours of operation for the UNCG Theatre Box Office are Monday-Friday 1:00-5:00 pm.

Fashionable, Plus Size & Regular-Size Clothing to Triad Women for Over 20 Years By Rob Ainbinder Clothes Balance Casual and Career with a Bit of Artistic Flair, Focus on Small Batch Designers. From a sales career at News & Record publications to boutique owner, Linnea’s owner Jody Martin has seen a lot. Back in 2000, Jody was working for NC Publications, which was at that time a division of The News and Record and included Triad Style magazine. Jody was an outside sales rep for them and she’d been there nine years. “I was kind of getting burned out. The magazine was trying to go in a different direction, and I knew that it wasn’t gonna work, so I was looking for something else to do.”, Jody says. “I decided that I wanted to open my own business, but I wasn’t sure what. So I went to my customers because a lot of my customers were boutique owners. And I asked them, what about me opening a plus-size store in Greensboro? And they said, Oh, that’s great.” With that vote of confidence, Jody

embarked on her mission to create a plus sized boutique. She began by asking one of her advertising customers to take her to her first Atlanta market. Jody says, “I bought clothes without having a storefront. This was in April of 2000. I went to market and I started buying clothes. I put my home address for where the boxes were going. And then after I went to market, I started looking for a place. And really at that time (April 2000) there weren’t that many places available. The commercial real estate market was Continued on page 6

kind of a tight.” Linnea’s first location was next to Maxi B’s Bakery on Battleground. Linneas, was known for plus size 1X, 2X, 3X sizes but, when the business moved to State Street they established a misses store, Vera’s Threads. Vera was Jody’s grandmother’s name and Jody named the store in her honor. Vera’s specializes in small, medium, large, extra large. Now in their new location, the lines are combined into one store. When you enter Linnea’s you are waited on. Jody says, “What we do is we help them find what they want, what they need, and we actually do wait on them. And we find some women don’t know how to put things together. So what we do is we help find what they’re looking for and match it up with some kind of pants, leggings, or tunic. We work to find out what they want, what fabric and so on. We have some designers that are a little more conservative, but then we have some that are from Israel and Turkey and are a little more artsy, creative, & funky.” Jody is grateful for her customers. “My customers are very, very loyal, she says.” During the economic downturn, her husband Jeff joined the company to help out with online sales. Jody states that, “online has taken off. We do probably. I’d say 40% online and 60% in the store. So we ship, you know, all over the United States, Canada and Australia.” The clothes that Linnea’s sells are from small batch designers. These designers sell smaller number of clothes to a retailer and usually handle a lot more of the work of Continued on page 27

by Jessica Thompson In regards to one of Greensboro’s exceptional programs, The Triad Health Project is one which started in 1986 providing practical support to those living with HIV/AIDS. I had the pleasure of speaking with Adriana Adams, who is most certainly passionate about her role in the non-profit, community-based organization. What is the Triad Health Project and the part it plays in our community you may ask? The Triad Health Project, also known as THP, (who partners with The United Way), provides free HIV prevention services, free HIV and STI testing, free education on HIV and STI’s, a dedicated care team of Case Managers working with people living with HIV, food Bank and support for those living in poverty, and a Higher Ground Day Center providing programs and support for those living with HIV. In order to support their continued efforts they are throwing The Bead Bash!, which is a fundraiser hosted by Miss Kitty Litter, featuring music by Jessica Mashburn and Even Olson. Proceeds from the event go to support Triad Health Project and their continued efforts to educate and support our community. The event sold out quickly, but there are in need of volunteers, if interested you can volunteering you can visit https://www. triadhealthproject.com/, also, you may make donations through the site as well.

Max is such a good boy! He is a happy go lucky Hound mix who loves to play. He has great house manners and is perfectly house broken and crate trained. Max can be a bit intimidated by new dogs when they first meet, but once he warms up, he loves to chase and play. And even with his short legs, this boy can move! Max loves everyone he meets and is great with kids. We believe Max to be a Beagle or Basset Hound mix, and he currently weighs around 40 lbs at 9 months old. Read more about Max at lovethemutt.org.

Onyx is so loving and smart! She loves toys, running zoomies in the yard, lying on the sofa, belly rubs, and trying to climb in her person’s lap. She knows “sit” and takes treats gently. She is crate and house trained but needs a little practice on leash. She also does well in the car. Onyx previously lived in a home that had children, and she was very gentle and patient when she was around them. She is curious about cats but doesn’t try to harm them. Onyx is a three year old female spaniel/hound/lab mix and weighs just under fifty pounds. Continued on page 24

SENOR BRAVO

An Explosion of Culture and Flavor in Downtown Winston-Salem When the city of Winston-Salem decided to shut down Business 40 more than a year ago to finally do much-needed repairs and rebuilding of the highway, it wasn’t an unexpected event. The city did its best job to try and educate both citizens and business owners alike on the probable impact it would have on downtown businesses. Residents were provided alternate routes to get into the downtown area and were highly encouraged to frequent the small businesses and restaurants whose livelihood depended on their patronage to survive. With three months left until the estimated reopening of the highway, it won’t be a minute too soon for all of us - but especially the businesses and restaurants who have been severely impacted by the closure. Many as you know, couldn’t survive at all. Sal, who has owned Senor Bravo for 10 years spoke to us about how the closure has impacted his business. Sal knew that there would be a drop in business but had no idea that it was going to be so severe. Senor Bravo is on the side 40 that’s referred to as “SOB40” - south of business 40 and that area of downtown was by far more impacted than the other side largely due to the bridges being removed. Residents just couldn’t seem to understand how to get across without the aid of a bridge (believe me - there are plenty of ways). He’s managed to survive but it’s definitely been a long haul. What can you expect if you’ve never been to Senor Bravo? If you don’t have the time or the extra cash to slip away to Mexico for sun, fun, amazing food, and tequila then Senor Bravo’s is the closest thing to escaping! The colors and decor are a fiesta for the eyes and the spirit - you immediately are swept away and can almost feel and taste the Mexican culture. 80% of their menu is authentic dishes that you would expect to be Continued on page 16 14 |

SENOR BRAVO MEXICAN RESTAUTANT

Continued from Page 16

served in Mexico, while the other 20% are the traditional items Americans have grown to expect to be offered. Sal calls those items “the combos 1 - 30” or as many of us say “TexMex”. They have an incredible bar menu and they pride themselves on only using fresh ingredients and that everything is made custom for each drink - no pre-made simple syrup at Senor Bravo! In addition to the main restaurant, there is also a location on the other side of 40 on Trade Street called simply, “In and Out”. Opened to largely cater to the downtown lunch crowd or anyone just looking for a quick bite to eat, diners are literally in and out in just a few minutes. The menu is much smaller than the mother ship location which is how they’re able to keep the business lunch crowd happy and full. All the items on that menu include a drink with your meal as well as chips and salsa. Looking to save some cash on already inexpensive menu prices? Pay cash and you’ll get a discount! While everyone may love a margarita, not everyone is a fan of straight-up tequila. Perhaps it’s due to a bad experience (hello, college!) or they’ve never tried the higher-end labels and beginning in February, Senor Bravo is setting out to change that with their tequila tasting dinners. Guests will have the opportunity to sample a variety of quality tequilas and learn from tequila experts about what makes each of them unique. Food will be included and paired with the tequila selection and reservations will be required as the event(s) will be limited to 50-70 guests in order to ensure it’s a great evening for all attending. Price has not been determined yet but Sal expects it to be around the $40 per head range so it’s an affordable experience for all. If you’re looking for a venue to host a private event - or even a wedding - the space is available to rent. Whether you choose to take over the entire space or just use certain areas of it, the team at Senor Bravo will help you each step of the way. Up to and including your own private DJ - you just need to make your ultimate party playlist and prepare to dance and eat your night away! NC WINE TRAVELER WINE SPOTLIGHT WESTBEND VINEYARDS, WINERY and BREWERY continues to Innovate- stop by for a refreshing beverage or some music with friends and family soon!!! BY Ron Hadley Westbend Vineyards/Winery and Brewery continues to innovate with new releases of their beer and wine from Owners Walt and Sonia with son Ryan Breathwit who has taken a leadership role since acquired in November 2015. They have added a new tasting room of 10,500-square-foot with music and have featured other events to attract customers over the past 4 years of their ownership. As many know, Westbend Vineyards is a Yadkin Valley pioneer in North Carolina’s wine industry when Jack and Lillian Kroustalis planted European grape varieties on the property in the 1970s. The common belief was that these grapes wouldn’t grow well in North Carolina but, they proved everyone wrong with their success. Sales Director, Zachary Farley had these comments to make: “ We are introducing a line of beer, canned in 16oz containers including “Blood Orange Wheat”, “I Love Juicy”, and “Lemon Fizz”. ‘ ‘We are also releasing a very short run of our specialty stout, “KGB” as well as two variants of this beer on the same day. Cans will be released during our St. Patrick’s Day Party Sat. March 14th while supplies last. This party will feature live music as well as a “grand opening” of sorts for a project we aren’t ready to reveal to the public quite yet, but I can say it’s going to be a real game changer. ‘ Secondly, Westbend is currently bottling their 2019 Chardonnay and their “Blossom River” semi-sweet white blend. They have plans to resurrect some old favorites, more than likely to be released March 14th as well. They will announce these a few weeks before the event. Jade is a super lovable and wonderfully energetic puppy; however, she is one of our shy girls and it takes her a little bit of time to trust new humans. For those who are patient with her the payoff is immeasurable! Once Jade feels comfortable she really opens up and has a great time with others. She gets along well with other dogs but she is still working on her puppy manners. She would do well with one-on-one training in order to excel. Because she is a bit nervous, we think Jade would do best in a home with adult humans only, and she would absolutely love to have a fenced back yard to run in. Jade is an approximately 1 year old Golden/Shepherd mix who weighs around 40 lbs.

Sequoia loves life and is always up for an adventure! She has gone on long car rides, camping trips, and was even brave enough to try kayaking. She is just happy to be along for the ride. She would do great with an active owner or family who can continue to teach her about the good things in life! She’s also happy to just lay next to you and be a couch potato at times. Sequoia is a mixed breed, approximately 4 years old and weighs in at around 40 lbs. She gets along well with the other dogs in her foster home but would also do well as an only dog so she could be the center of your world! This girl has so much love to give, she just needs someone to love her back as hard.
