over the business, he dealt with the North Carolina state liquor laws and Prohibition. North Carolina started going through their Prohibition way before the federal government. It started in the early 1900’s. You had to be an incorporated town to make liquor. Zeb’s great grandfather incorporated the town of Williams. In 1905, the size of Williams grew. In 1909, North Carolina enacted Prohibition and they were forced to stop production on the farm, a property with over 800 acres. They could only sell outside the state lines and internationally. Old Nick Williams Farm and Distillery, located at 2675 Williams Road in Lewisville, provides a rich family tradition focusing on craft bourbon and whiskey. The Williams family has kept the legacy alive for generations. Today, fourth and fifth great grandsons of the founder, Col. Joseph Williams ensure that quality and craftsmanship are maintained. Established in 1768, the Old Nick Williams Company was one of the most revered brands of whiskey in the United States. By the late 1800’s their fame was worldwide. Zeb Williams’ fifth great grandfather Joseph built his first still in 1768, primarily for medicinal and family use. Zeb enthuses, “Word spread, quality improved, and the next thing you know, it was an operating distillery.” The distillery operated in the Williams family until Prohibition. Zeb mentions, “It was passed down father to son, until my great grandfather Nicholas Glen inherited the distillery.” Once Nicholas Glen Williams took

Zeb indicates the challenge: “That put a damper on things. We had over 22,000 gallons of liquor on the farm.” Zeb’s great grandfather Glen died in 1913 and none of the children were old enough to take over the distillery. Liquor sat on the farm until 1920. When federal Prohibition was enacted, revenuers came in and disposed of all the alcohol left on the property. Business died at the location for about 100 years. In 2014, two brothrs, Van and John Williams, and their sons Zeb and Matt Williams, decided to move forward with their dreams. It is important that the facts of their family history are correctly presented to the public. The common goal is to provide the best possible product, just as their ancestors did many years ago. Old Nick Williams Farm and Distillery first produced liquor at Foothills Distillery, Conover, North Carolina, in 2015. In May 2017, the distillery received per-

mits to allow Old Nick Williams Farm and Distillery to make the first drop of liquor since 1909. Zeb Williams cites a craft boom: “People socialize now and like to know where their products are made. We’re a craft distillery. We still do it like my great grandfather did it 125 to 150 years ago, plus a few bells and whistles.” Old Nick Williams Farm and Distillery uses all North Carolina local grains, which they feel makes a big difference. They use a specific heirloom variety, non-GMO corn, which is very similar to what Zeb’s great grandfather used years ago. Zeb emphasizes their uniqueness: “We are a true craft. We use the same recipes as 200 years ago, just like the family did, with the same hands on approach. We are trying to use the same level of quality. ” He indicates that the Williams family tradition separates them from other Continued on page 8

distilleries: “We are building the same great product as our great grandfather did.” Zeb mentions that North Carolina is a great state for bourbon. The state has a great grain belt. Fluctuation of temperature during the different seasons creates great opportunities for perfect aging and maturing conditions. The distillery focuses on two products currently; unaged white whiskey and bourbon, with a line of rums coming soon. All grain is used in our whiskey, no added sugar. That makes a big taste difference. Zeb states, “Our white whiskey is a stellar product. “ Zeb is proud of Old Nick Williams Farm and Distillery’s success, earning a double gold medal in the 2018 San Francisco World Spirit competition for their bourbon. This is one of the largest spirit competitions in the world. Old Nick’s also was close to Best of Show, alongside big bourbon distilleries. Old Nick Williams Farm and Distillery produces approximately 4 barrels containing a total of 1200 bottles monthly. Customers can purchase a maximum of 5 bottles per year from Old Nick Williams Distillery due to North Carolina liquor laws. Old Nick Williams Farm and Distillery just hired their first employee, who is a graduate of the Appalachian State Fermentation program. Fermentation is a very important part of the process in producing

quality craft liquor. On August 4, the Petty Museum is hosting a ticketed fundraising event on the farm. A tour of Petty Museum, Richard Childress Racing Museum, and the distillery, poker run/ride, dinner, live music, and silent auction will be part of the event. Old Nick Williams Farm and Distillery will have a strong presence at the event, which raises money for Petty’s charity. Ricky Proehl’s Power of Play Foundation and Old Nick Williams Farm and Distillery will team up to help raise funds. Power of Play teaches the core values of Play, Opportunity, Work, Excellence, and Respect. Old Nick Williams Farm and Distillery products are in ABC Stores, bars, and restaurants in about 80% of North Carolina. All major cities are prime markets. Charlotte, Raleigh and Wilmington are strong selling areas due to tourism and year-round business. Old Nick Williams Farm and Distillery hours are: Tuesday – Thursday - 11 am - 5 pm; Friday – Saturday - 11 am - 6 pm Old Nick Williams Farm and Distillery is closed on Sundays due to North Carolina State ABC laws. EL CAMINO REAL Authentic and Delicious Mexican Food

When El Camino Real owner Francisco Casilla was a young boy living in Acapulco, Mexico, his mother (or “Mama”, as he refers to her) taught him everything he needed to know about making authentic and delicious Mexican food. She would send Francisco to the village markets daily to buy the fresh ingredients that she would turn into magical dishes for her family. Only the best would do for his Mama and if he ever brought home ingredients that didn’t meet her standards, out the door the two of them would go and head back to the market. She would then proceed to take him to each of the vendors and introduce him as her son and instruct them that should they see Francisco shopping for her, they were to help him choose the best and freshest items they had - nothing less would do.

These are the lessons that Francisco brought with him when he moved to America in the early 90’s and began training with chefs to further hone his skills. When he moved to the Triad area close to 15 years ago, he worked with local chefs from Milner’s and Bermuda Run Country Club, where he added things such as budgeting food costs and managing a staff to his culinary tool kit - skills necessary for him to further his career in the food and beverage industry and make his next move of opening his own restaurant. Francisco took that big step in 2009, when he opened the first El Camino Real location in Greensboro. Working side by side with other family members, it quickly became a favorite of Greensboro residents as the place to go for authentic and freshly made dishes.

El Camino Real

After 6 years of driving back and forth to Winston-Salem daily, Francisco decided it was time to consider opening a second Triad location, and began looking for the perfect spot to do just that. In 2015, the WinstonSalem location of El Camino Real opened their doors. When asked what sets El Camino Real apart from other Mexican restaurants in town, Francisco was quick to say that it’s because they serve authentic, homemade Mexican dishes like his mother made - using only the freshest of ingredients and making everything from scratch, every day. Everything from their tortillas, chips, salsa, and pico de gallo, to the margarita mix is made daily. If an item doesn’t meet Francisco’s high standards, it’s remade until it does. He admits it doesn’t happen often as all the staff have been trained and taught by him. Another thing that makes his food special is the way he prepares his tamales. Whereas most restaurants prepare them using corn husks, Francisco and his team prepare them using banana leaves, which makes them more moist on the inside and gives them a distinctive flavor. This is a technique he learned from his mother - however, instead of drying the leaves out on the rooftop, Francisco opts for a procedure a little closer to the ground and dries them out in the kitchen. Popular entrees at the Winston location include those very tamales, tortes, sopes, and pozole. If you’re in the mood for soup, try the Coctel ala Campechana which has shrimp, oysters, and octopus in it, all served 12 | Detailed event information available at www.336events.com

with open shells - definitely not your average bowl of soup! Another unique feature of their menu is that Menudo is served every day of the week. Some Mexican restaurants only serve it one day a week. There are daily specials in both the restaurant and the bar. According to Francisco, a must-have from the bar menu is the very special Presidente Margarita. This unique margarita is made with Mexican brandy as opposed to the traditional tequila. The brandy has to be special-ordered from the state stores, and takes four weeks to be delivered, which means on rare occasion it is not available. If you miss getting it on your visit, that just means you have to go back and visit again! With the welcoming environment, the friendly staff, and the freshly made dishes, we are certain diners will enjoy every aspect of their visit to El Camino Real! However, if you need additional incentive to stop in and dine, they will be showing every game available of the soccer World Cup over the next few weeks. So grab your friends or your family and head to the second location of El Camino Real located in Winston-Salem! The Winston-Salem restaurant is located at 3800 Reynolda Road in the Food Lion shopping center and is open Monday Thursday from 11:00am - 10:00pm and Friday - Sunday from 11:00 - 10:30. Takeout is available for all menu items with an additional $0.25 charge for each order. Old Nick’s Pub (no relation to Old Nick Williams Distillery) located in the town of Lewisville has a reputation for being community oriented since its opening 3 and ½ years ago. “We wanted to create a community gathering place that is all about fun. It is also important that everyone feels welcome” said one of the owners, Jennifer Hill. Old Nick’s is more than your typical neighborhood bar as it provides different activities every day and supports its members by engaging in charitable fundraising for causes important to their members. The pub features a restored 100 year old Brunswick bar that seats 9-10 patrons, 2 Brunswick pool tables, 4 dart boards, some table seating, a comfortable lounge area and an outdoor patio. The old fashioned bar and decorations adds to the ambiance and coolness of the place. Old Nick’s has 10 beer taps and likes to feature NC beers. There is also a large selection of bottled

beers, wines and homemade Sangria and a full line-up of spirits, including several from NC distilleries. The craft cocktail menu is updated each Spring and Fall and can be found on their website, oldnickspubnc.com. For fun, the pub occasionally hosts liquor tasting events where patrons can try some new things. In an effort to give back to the community, Old Nick’s supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, The Forsyth Humane Society, Family Services of Davidson County, The Forever is Tomorrow Foundation for Kidney Patients and many more. Weekly events include Monday Night Darts Luck of the Draw, where you play with a partner and have a chance to win the “mystery out” of up to $180. Tuesdays and Sunday nights are reserved for Dart and Pool Leagues. Team Trivia is held on Continued on page 20

Wednesdays. There can be as many as 12 or 13 teams competing for different prizes and bragging rights! Thursday night is a pool tournament that often draws 16 or more players. Once a month, you’ll find a painting class, where you can get instruction and help completing your own masterpiece. Weekends are filled with music, with Karaoke most Friday nights and local or regional bands playing on Saturdays. Weekly music events never have a cover charge. A new event for the Pub is a Comedy Night. This month on July 20th Al Yountz and Cooter Douglas will appear at 9pm. Bartender and Comedienne Holly Manus will open the show. This event will have a $5 ticket. Another first this month will be a “Bar Olympics” event held on 3 Sundays, July 15th, 22nd and 29th. It will be fun, competitive and silly just like the other theme events the bar has held, such as the Onesie Party, an Adult Prom, 70’s and 80’s

HORIGAN’S HOUSE OF TAPS 603 S Elm St, GSO, NC 336-763-1143 Horigan’s House of Taps, a gathering spot and pub located in the Downtown Greensboro area, has been serving up great craft beers since 2017. Horigan’s passion for craft beer is seen through its dozens of local crafts, and its self-serve taps (the only self-serve taps in the Triad!). Horigan’s has about 48 taps, with 8 of those dedicated to wine, 3 to 4 dedicated to ciders, and the

rest to craft beers, with emphasis on North Carolina craft breweries. The great thing about self-serve taps is that patrons can pour their beers and taste as many as they want when they want. Horigan’s carries craft beers from Natty Greene’s, Foothills, Four Saints, and Wiseman. Horigan’s also carries two very popular North Carolina drafts. Yours Truli, brewed by Weeping Radish Farm Brewery, is a Bavarian Hefeweizen, and includes a little something special with the addition of Triticale grain from Durham’s Epiphany malt house. The grain is a mix of wheat and rye, which gives a spicy and soft malt flavor to the German ale. The other draft is an Imperial Stout, The Triple Barrel Big Bad Baptist, which is aged in whiskey barrels with cacao nibs and barrel-aged coffee beans with barrelaged coconut added. These drafts have me excited to visit Horigan’s, but I am looking forward to the food as well. Horigan’s has an impressive food menu featuring my favorite-- Bavarian Pretzels served with a Continued on page 24

signature beer cheese dip and mustard, which will pair well with any beer on tap. They also have a cheese plate and charcuterie plate for all the wine drinkers out there, and a great selection of panini sandwiches, all served on rustic bread. Tuesday at Horigan’s is wine night, with all wines half price starting at 4 pm, and trivia beginning at 8pm. Wednesday is beer night, with half-off all beer taps, and the chance to win a Horigan’s House of Taps pint glass if you “Kick the Keg.” Horigan’s provides a relaxing place where you can chill, drink a beer, and you don’t have to wait on a bartender. Beers are always changing at Horigan’s, with a rotating schedule throughout the year. There is something for everyone no matter your taste. www.horiganstaps.com

BROAD BRANCH DISTILLERY broadbranchdistillery.com 756 Trade St NW, Winston-Salem, NC 336-602-2824 SOUTHERN CRAFT RUM The Carolinas meet the Caribbean when we bring Blue Ridge artesian water and add a rich Caribbean molasses made with a nearly lost old world technique. We Triple Pot distill this tropical concoction for a rum, bold and sensuous. Floral and fruit aromas rise from the glass as a velvety sweetness meets the tongue. Following on are robust notes of toasted coconut and dark vanilla and a hint of sweet pineapple on the finish. A perfect balance of intense and compelling. This summer feel the tropical transcendence of Sungrazer.
