THE FRIENDLIEST BAR IN WINSTON
by Kristen Margo Daukas When the doors opened in 2006 the goal of Finnigan’s Wake owner, Opie Kirby, was three-fold: be part of the revitalization of Trade Street, create a place for people to gather with their friends as well as make new ones, and to give Winston-Salem a true Irish pub experience. Thirteen years later, those goals have been met time and time again as Finnigan’s Wake has become a staple in many residents’ lives. From the moment they open at 11:00 AM until the time they close at 2:00 AM, there is always a crowd of people gathered to share stories, laughter, drinks, and good food. Unlike many places in town, the kitchen is open during all business hours, with different menus throughout the day. With its wooden floors and walls, it’s as though you’re no longer in Winston and instead, you’ve been transported to Dublin. Their menu holds true to many traditional Irish dishes - Shepherd’s Pie, Scotch Eggs, Bangers and Mash, and Corned Beef and Cabbage are just a few offerings you can get at Finnigan’s Wake, and what good meal doesn’t get started 6 |
with that pint of Guinness listed under “starters”? No lie - this Irish lassie would walk 5 miles through the snow just to get a bowl of their tomato soup (and even further to get the recipe)! They’ve recently added a new $10 lunch menu which is available Monday - Friday from 11am3pm. There are special items which will only be on this featured menu and the $10 includes your coffee, tea, or soda (but tax and gratuity are additional). As it has been from the beginning and always will be, everything on the menu is made from scratch using fresh ingredients. Now that we’re officially into summer weather, it’s time to get outside and you won’t find a better patio in Winston than the one at Finnigan’s Wake, that you’ll discover all the way at the end of the hallway. It’s the perfect place to drink and eat under the stars at night, and soak in the sun during the day. If your clan of friends includes your fur babies, the incredible back patio of Finnigan’s is dog-friendly for leashed and well-behaved dogs. Coming up on June 1st, there’s a beer and cider brunch

FINNIGAN’S WAKE

with Appalachian Mountain Brewing (AMB) from 11am-3pm which will include great food, drink specials, giveaways, and a very special edition of trivia with Opie! In addition to events throughout the year like the beer and cider brunch, there are a couple that happens annually - St. Patrick’s Day and the St. Baldrick’s charity event. If you’ve never been to St. Patrick’s Day at Finnigan’s Wake, it is an absolute must for your Winston-Salem bucket list. I would consider it one of the best St. Patrick’s Day events that I’ve been to in any big city and the crowd is much friendlier and easier to navigate through! St. Baldrick’s is a charity event to benefit childhood cancer research and is another fun and lively day that brings the community
together for both a good time and a good cause. This year’s St. Baldrick’s event will be held on September 21st, so mark it on your calendar now! Whether you’re looking to meet up with old friends Continued on page 10

Celebrate Winston-Salem at the Industry Hill Block Party on Saturday, June 8th. Mixxer Makerspace, Krankies Craft Fair, The RamKat, Wherehouse Art Hotel, WS Ambassadors, and many more are teaming up to create a full lineup of programming, activities, live music, and crafts! We’re shutting down 9th St. to bring you a summer kickoff to remember. Come hungry - 20 food trucks and 4 breweries will be on tap to provide delicious bites for every palette. Winston-Salem’s non-profits and entrepreneurial support organizations will have booths up and down 9th St. so we can learn what’s going on in our city today. On the main stage you’ll find musical acts Foxture, Fortezza, and Spirit System, along with two intriguing panel discussions. “The Future of Industry Hill,” will look at how we can use the development of Industry Hill to bridge cultural and economic divides while “Winston-Salem’s Entrepreneurial Ecosystem,” will look at what’s available for entrepreneurs and how to get started! This event is brought to you by NC IDEA Foundation, Advancing Entrepreneurship.

2 Year Grand Re-opening
Local Celebration & Rum Release Sarah K Wilson Tucked away in the lush forest of Lewisville proudly stands the Old Nick Williams Distillery and sprawling farm. The smell of sweet molasses and grains spill through the air, as bottles of whisky, bourbon, and recently rum, are made on-site with local farm-sourced ingredients. The ONW Jamerican rum is set to be released on June 15th, where there will be live Jamaican music, food trucks, games, local vendors, and an all around party to celebrate the big debut and the two year anniversary of the distillery. The ONW Jamerican rum is going to be a classic Jamaican style rum, but with an American flair, making it an excellent addition to the selection of spirits available at the distillery.
The distillery also serves as a piece of living history, and used to be up and operating until prohibition shut them down in the early 1900’s. There are even large piles of broken glass on the premises still today, from when law enforcement came through the distillery and smashed all the bottles of spirits that they could find during prohibition. Some surviving bottles recovered from the glass piles are even on display inside the bar area for public viewing. Old Nick Williams Distillery is also actively pushing the Senate bill 290 called the Distiller Regulatory Reform Bill which would grant parody to NC distilleries and allow them to serve cocktails, self distribute, eliminate the cap on bottle sales, and would grant the same rights to the distillery that have been granted to breweries and Continued on page 16

wineries for the past 15 years. In pursuing this, they would level the playing field between the liberties given to breweries and wineries, and even allow for the distillery to be open on Sunday. There’s always something going on at Old Nick Williams farm and distillery--from the chickens, dogs, and goats, to political involvement, the owners stay busy and dedicated to bringing fun and excitement to all visitors. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for June 15th for the fun-filled twoyear anniversary celebration and the big release of the Jamerican Rum. Continued on page 18 16 |
