Dinner’s Ready - Sort Of... Changes to be aware of when eating out. By Kristen Margo Daukas I almost titled this article “What a Long, Strange Trip It’s Been” but the trip is far from over. As restaurants and bars were forced to close by the Governor’s orders, many of us worried and wondered what would happen with our favorite places to eat and watering holes. The restaurants that were able to quickly pivot and offer take out and delivery were better prepared to weather the storm, whereas bars and special event establishments were cut off at the knees. Many of us, as consumers, tried to do our part to continue to eat from our favorite places, and while it helped take the edge off of the pain of their loss of income, for most restaurants it only covered the costs of running the kitchen. No profits were being made during this time but I’ve heard story after story from owners that they were in awe at the support they did receive and how it renewed their faith in people. When the state entered into Phase 1 (May 8th) of reopening the state, the food and beverage industry still were unable to do anything but wait and hope that Phase 2 would begin as scheduled on May 22nd. Those that were open during the stay at home period now were able to start formulating a plan of attack on how they would reopen once the new phase began and the Governor laid out the requirements in order to reopen. As expected, on May 22nd restaurants were able to reopen following certain guidelines: 50% of capacity, guests must be seated at least 6’ apart, increased disinfection during peak times, masks on all employees strongly encouraged (this is NOT required, FYI), and so on. And while you may have thought that every restaurant would have flung their doors open at 5:00 that Friday, the majority of them chose to not open. Opting instead to take a week or more in order to be fully prepared to welcome their guests back. With all the new requirements, it wasn’t going to be as simple as turning the lights on and firing up the grill. Staff had to be trained on how to safely operate under the new guidelines. The restaurant itself had to go through a deep and thorough cleaning. Tables had to be removed or blocked off. Distancing markers had to be placed in high traffic areas. Many owners have also opted to go through the free training offered by the state Continued on page 14

NEIGHBORHOOD GENERAL STORE IN THE HEART OF KERNERSVILLE
By Jessica Thompson
Ever miss those older episodes of older television shows? You know, the ones where people were honest, sincere, helpful, polite, knew you by name or face, and you always received a warm greeting when walking in? Well, this place is bringing it back to life, all thanks to a wonderful antique and country store called Junktique Alleyway, located right in the heart of Kernersville, at 115 South Main St. Opened in March of 2016, the owner Linda Nugent, will surely be there, ready to assist you in any way she can. All seeding from making granola and a love for her family. You are instantly intrigued while driving by, the fresh produce shining in the sun, the water still reflecting on the beautiful tomatoes, corn, naval oranges, peaches, squash, broccoli, and other mouth-watering items. Also accompanying this delightful assortment of produce. She sells raw peanuts, bananas always fresh; currently 37¢ per pound. The general store also boasts beautifully full-grown hanging ferns, outdoor metal art, and outdoor decorations of all shapes sizes to brighten up your yard. The well-crafted tin Roosters, pigs, ducks, owls, birds, bright pink flamingos and various farm animals are too cute for words and have become quite popular with customers. The tall wind spinners and the twinkling eye-catching melodic wind chimes caught my eye, as well as my ear. Just think, we are not even into the store yet! When you step through the entrance you are immediately greeted by the friendly staff. You can already see that this place has a certain southern charm and magic, well loved by its owner, Linda Nugent. the store is open seven days a week to ensure her customers always have what they need, keeping her shelves stocked with nostalgic old-fashioned candies, jarred/canned goods, jams and jellies, beans-a-plenty, and more fruits and veggies. The Ashe County cheese is to live for. Even though they have many to choose from, the mountain marble stole my heart. From Homestead Creamery milk and ice cream, fresh farm raised eggs from Kernersville. Potatoes? How about red, Yukon gold, baking or sweet. Watermelons, cantaloupes, different types of apples, an array of baking items/other condiments. One can find a little of just about everything here. When turning a corner, the smell 6 |

JUNKTIQUE ALLEYWAY

of handcrafted locally made candles wafts through the air after first entering and seeing all the immediate goodies. So, you can’t help yourself but to want to go further down the rabbit hole. As you walk from room to room, you can find all sorts of eclectic (new, used, antique, or repurposed) items for purchase. She has the most beautiful art exhibited, fantastic handmade signs, all with themes from the beach to the sky. These are just the walls, which are nearly covered from floor to ceiling with treasures from eras before and some contemporary items tucked here and there. She has all sorts of items in her shop of wonders so if you stop by and see something that enchants you, I would suggest a quick purchase because it may not be there tomorrow. Junktique Alleyway is family owned and run, you can feel the sense of pride and joy that Linda and her family take in running this amazing place. They are constantly bringing in new items, offering amazing prices on items, items you simply not find anywhere else. While most businesses had to close or some just closed due to the COVID-19 virus that the nation is currently facing, Linda chose to keep her store open, same hours. She stated that, “she had to help her community in times of need.” She has practiced keeping her store germ free and her customers safe as they shop. Providing people with the necessities that could not be easily found and made them readily accessible, especially to the elderly and people with children. I have witnessed this incredible woman fill bags with food, give to people who are hungry, and support everyone around her. How she does it all in a day, I guess we will never know, but to say that Junktique Alleyway and Linda are an asset and pleasure to the community is an understatement. If you’re ever in Kernersville stop by and see what all the fuss is about. Even if you do not leave with any purchases your first time, I guarantee you will want to come back time and time again, just to say hello to the wonderful people and nook that comprise Junktique Alleyway moving towards a beautiful General store. I know I will! Junktique Alleyway 115 S Main St, Kernersville, NC 336-515-4015 Open Daily until 10am - 6pm (12pm - 5pm on Sundays)

Young Cardinal Cafe: Rolling with the Punches in Style By Kristen Margo Daukas When Winston-Salem restauranteur Adam Andrews developed the concept of his solo venture, Young Cardinal Cafe, it was to give the city a new and different breakfast joint. Located in the space formerly occupied by Hutch and Harris, Young Cardinal Cafe offers patrons breakfast and lunch options between 8:00 - 3:00 and then came a twist… the restaurant would close at 3:00 and then REOPEN at 9:30 pm so they could offer a smaller menu that would cater to the latenight bar crowd until 2:30 am - something that no one else was doing in the downtown area. Working with Chef David Swing, the two devised a menu as unique as the concept. Diners could get a classic all American breakfast and then give it a twist and add things like pulled pork, fried chicken, or pimento cheese. Fan of eggs benedict? They had four variations. Bloody Mary your go-to brunch cocktail? Young Cardinal Cafe has five different versions to choose from as well as boozy coffees to get - or keep - you going. Young Cardinal Cafe opened its doors on February 28, 2020, and quickly became a favorite downtown spot. That is until COVID-19 showed up and ruined everyone’s party. Like many other restaurant owners, Andrews and Swing had to quickly adjust in order to stay afloat until things could start to reopen. In addition to take-out and curbside service, they also offered grocery service to offer residents the opportunity to purchase items that were becoming difficult to find in grocery stores such as vegetables, meats, dairy, and the coveted symbol of COVID-19: toilet paper and paper towels. This service was also helpful for those who didn’t want to risk going to the grocery stores initially. Each week, they created family dinners for customers to order that included the main entree, sides, and dessert - everything you needed to have a Young Cardinal Cafe experience at home! Now that we’re into phase 2 of opening the state back up, Andrews and Swing are once again shifting their business model (and menu) to accommodate diners who want to eat in. Their breakfast and lunch hours remain the same: 8:00 am - 3:00 pm but instead of the 2nd shift being for late-night, it’s now for regular dinner hours of 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm. For the short term, you won’t see their regular menu. Instead, diners will have a daily selection of small plates to choose from. A sampling of what those could look like are Trio of Dips, Shrimp Ceviche Lettuce Wraps, Spicy Goat Cheese Meatballs, Beef Tenderloin Flatbread, etc. Like other restaurants, you will see new safety precautions in place such as disposable menus and limited seating. In addition to Young Cardinal Cafe, Andrews is a partner in three other establishments: Dogwood Hops & Crops, The Trophy Room, and Jeffrey Adams. Of those, only Jeffrey Adams will be allowed to open during phase 2, and plans were underway at print time to reopen that. Dogwood has continued to offer delivery and pick up at the storefront and due to customers not 10 |

CHANGES TO BE AWARE OF WHEN EATING OUT
Continued from Page 5
called Count On Me NC - “a mutual pledge and public health initiative that empowers guests and businesses to help keep everyone safe and protected”. In many instances, menus had to be completely overhauled due to a national shortage on food. In early May the CEO of USFoods even issued a statement to the industry - be prepared to offer a limited menu compared to what you had before. If you haven’t ventured out to eat in a restaurant yet, here’s what you can expect: Smaller menu options, fewer seating options, throw away menus, no condiments on the table, no preset table settings, longer cook times, longer wait times, no waiting for your table in the lobby, very little interaction with the staff, time limitations on how long you can sit at your table. The atmosphere is definitely not as joyful which, to me, is a big part of going out to eat - almost as much as the food experience. When you do finally head out, please remember to have patience and be kind. The food and beverage industry is a stressful one in ‘normal’ times and right now is far from normal thus increasing the stress level. If you can make a reservation, do so. It will cut down on the frustration of having to wait for a table. Respect the time limit on how long you can be there - restaurants depend on turning tables over in order to make a profit. It’s going to take a while for them to recover from the lockdown and being reduced to 50% capacity makes turning a profit an uphill battle. And of course - tip your servers very well.
