2019 American Cancer Society Relay for Life

The 2020 Relay for Life of Guilford County will be held Friday, May 15th at Western Guilford High School. This event is the signature fundraiser of the American Cancer Society. It is also the biggest fundraising event in the country. Members of the community come together for one night of remembering and celebrating those who have been touched by cancer. Teams are formed, and fundraising takes place to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Last year, Relay for Life raised over $205,000 in Guilford County. The event will begin with an Opening Ceremony at 6:00 p.m., and the Survivors Lap will follow immediately after. The Survivors Lap is an inspirational time when Survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories they’ve achieved over cancer. Relay for Life also recognizes and celebrates Caregivers at the event. After dark, we honor people who have been affected by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Luminaria bags surround the track, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence. Our theme this year is “Game Over, Cancer.” Teams will be decorating their campsite based on different game related themes. There will be entertainment, live music, food, activities for kids, and much more at this event. You don’t want to miss this magical night. We hope to see you there! To register as a Survivor, form a team, or purchase a Luminaria bag, go to www. relayforlife.org/guilfordnc. We are excited to partner with Jersey Mike’s for their Day of Giving, held on March 25th, 2020. Plan to eat at a Jersey Mike’s Triad location this day as 100% of all sales will be donated to the American Cancer Society – Relay for Life. Thank you for joining us in the fight to end cancer! For further information, please contact Kayla Collins at the American Cancer Society office (336) 834-3354.

MORE THAN JUST FOOD, IT’S FAMILY... By Jessica Thompson With the initial greeting from the lovely smiling host/hostess upon entering Harper’s Restaurant, the low lighting, paired with the warm dark polished wood, and the fantastic smells that are coming from the kitchen; you will instantly fall in love with the charm of this establishment. Opened in Friendly Shopping Center in Greensboro in 1993, it has become a favorite amongst many people who have become regulars over the years, and it is easy to understand why. The General Manager, Mark Sienko, takes a magnitude of pride in his position, his Head Chef John Smith is meticulous in the quality locally sourced produce, meats, and the process in which the food is prepared daily. The menu boasts a myriad of delicious dishes, such as, a melt in your mouth, Hickory Grilled Filet Mignon, woodfire grilled to perfection, topped with the in-house made crusted pimento cheese and a baked potato. Not a steak fan? There is a delectable Slow Roasted Danish pork ribs, also grilled that provides a very delightful smoky taste, the meat so tender it falls off the bone, slathered in Harper’s BBQ sauce and a side of their famous shoestring fries. Looking for something a little lighter and healthier, they even have something for you. Try their new Ahi Tuna Mixed Green; wood-fired grilled tuna, crusted with sesame seeds, on a bed of fresh greens, topped with a spicy ginger wasabi aioli and soy ginger dressing, it was absolutely delicious and I can see this becoming a definite favorite for the warm weather months. This salad has all the ingredients of what is in a sushi roll in salad form. If you’re looking to just pop in for something light while you await a movie or are taking a break from shopping, try the in-house hand cut shoestring fries that have a great crispiness, a light seasoning of truffle oil and parmesan cheese. These fries, which were a happy accident resulting from the restaurant running out of the fries 6 |

typically used on a very busy Mother’s Day weekend some years ago. I am very happy that it did, because they are go-to for many patrons. The menu now boasts Mozzarella Stuffed Meatballs that are to die for with spicy marinara, baked ricotta and pistachio pesto. I wouldn’t be doing the restaurant justice if I failed to mention the shredded brussels sprouts that come in a cast iron pan, cooked on the grilled, featuring a wonderful apple cider vinegar reduction, and bacon bits (one of my personal favorites). Pair this one of their many wines, craft beers, or mixed drinks. There are weekly drink specials as well! While having the opportunity to the delightful, mild mannered and very laidback Mark, I was introduced to their new “Build your Own Skinny Margarita. A tall glass arrives, with the tequila garnished with a lime, accompanied by a small glass of freshly squeezed lime juice (made fresh daily by their very fun bartender Lee), and a cold medium sized bottle of Topo Chico Sparkling water. You can make it as mild or tart as you’d like; also, it’s fun to be able to craft your own margarita! Plus, it is easy on the waistline. Not a bad idea for a nice, warm day, sitting outside on the patio, enjoying one of their many mouth-watering dishes. It is easy to see why a majority of the staff have been with this establishment for 5-30+ years. Between the atmosphere, food, staff, delicious drinks, and not to mention a trivia night every Thursday with a late night bar menu, it is not hard to understand why people have been coming here to celebrate birthdays, graduations, anniversary milestones, Mother’s/Father’s Day, graduations, or simply to have a great lunch or dinner. If you have not had the experience of dining at Harper’s Restaurant, I strongly Continued on page 10

NC WINE TRAVELER WINE SPOTLIGHT SHELTON VINEYARDS-DOBSON, NC SHELTON offers excellent wine, a beautiful setting with lakes and trees, group events, weddings, Festivals and outstanding food with the acclaimed Harvest Grill Bistro!!! By Ron Hadley Charlie and Ed Shelton who had built several successful businesses in Real estate investment and construction in Charlotte first developed their vineyard/winery from tobacco fields in Surry County and started operations in 1999 with the first grapes planted in 2001. Their pioneering leadership in the NC Grape/Winery industry was first seen through their efforts in 2003 with the designation of the region as the Yadkin Valley AVA- American Viticultural Area by the Federal Government. In addition, the Surry County Community College in Dobson, NC in 2010 created the Shelton-Badgett Center for Viticulture and Enology with state funding and the leadership of the Shelton Brothers to help educate and support the Grape/Wine industry in the Tarheel state region. Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Shelton Vineyards is often described as ‘the jewel of the Yadkin Valley’. The 33,000-sq-ft gravity-flow winery is surrounded by meticulously pruned vines, relaxing streams and pond, a walking trail, and picnic areas. The expertly crafted estate wines reflect the Yadkin Valley’s unique “terroir” and are among the valley’s best. The acclaimed Harvest Grill Bistro offers on-site food or you can picnic at the vineyard. In 2019 TripAdvisor awarded them the Hall of Fame Certificate of excellence. During the year there are several group events, such as the British Car Gathering in April 2020 and the 14th Annual Harvest Festival in October 2020 with 7 food trucks and music. This is a free event. There are many choices from the extensive white and red wines offered including many award winners!!! Tastings, Tours and enjoying the wine on premise are all options to consider. If spending the night, the award-winning Hampton Inn is just two miles from the vineyard. The Hampton Inn can be easily accessed from I 77. In addition to mountain views, it also has a wine bar, pool, exercise room and free weekend shuttle service to and from the Harvest Grill Restaurant. There are many Wine Tours available in the Yadkin Valley and you can start or end at one of the best with Shelton Vineyards!!! The Shelton family continues to operate and manage their vineyards/winery and they hope you’ll visit with family and friends soon!!! Shelton Vineyards, 286 Cabaret Lane, Dobson, NC 27017, 336-366-4724 18 |

Mack is a stunning boy with unique caramel/brindle markings! He’s just over a year old and weighs in around 70 lbs. Mack is likely a pit or pit mix, and he’s everything this breed should be. He’s energetic and fun, loves to play, but also loves to cuddle. Mack loves everyone he meets, including kids! He would do well in an active home with a fenced yard to run in.

Sphinx loves to strut her stuff! She’s a great dog to take out and about on the town, especially if you’re hanging out at a brewery or a park. This girl is laid back and loves everyone she meets! Sphinx is approximately 2.5 years old and weighs in at around 55 lbs. She gets along great with her big brother and sisters in foster care, and loves to tease them by stealing their toys! Stuffy toys are her favorite, especially if she can get that squeaker out of there! Sphinx is an all around great little girl.

Sequoia loves life and is always up for an adventure! She has gone on long car rides, camping trips, and was even brave enough to try kayaking. She is just happy to be along for the ride. She would do great with an active owner or family who can continue to teach her about the good things in life! She’s also happy to just lay next to you and be a couch potato at times. Sequoia is a mixed breed, approximately 4 years old and weighs in at around 40 lbs. She gets along well with the other dogs in her foster home but would also do well as an only dog so she could be the center of your world! This girl has so much love to give, she just needs someone to love her back as hard.

Onyx is so loving and smart! She loves toys, running zoomies in the yard, lying on the sofa, belly rubs, and trying to climb in her person’s lap. She knows “sit” and takes treats gently. She is crate and house trained but needs a little practice on leash. She also does well in the car. Onyx previously lived in a home that had children, and she was very gentle and patient when she was around them. She is curious about cats but doesn’t try to harm them. Onyx is a three year old female spaniel/hound/lab mix and weighs just under fifty pounds.
