HISTORY’S FUTURE...
By Ray Morgan
I love to visit antique stores and get a glimpse into our shared past, to see how people lived, their tools, their furniture, and their art. We have a unique portal to our history in Laster’s Fine Art & Antiques, Winston-Salem. Regulars know the inventory turns over constantly. In a recent conversation with Larry and Ryan Laster, father and son owners, they shared with me their store sees a consistent turnover of unique items. In fact, their advice is “If you see a piece that makes you smile, don’t wait. It won’t be here when you come back.” Larry expanded, “We see it all the time. A person will be very interested in a piece of furniture or artwork and they tell us they want to think about it. They didn’t see the other patron, just waiting for them to move on so they could come in and scoop it up!” 6 |
I asked where they get their selection of antiques and learned Laster’s doesn’t go shopping, people bring items to them. Having a stellar reputation and over 40 years of experience in the industry means families seek them out to appraise and sell their unique possessions. Laster’s offers purchase or consignment options. For the client who is more interested in finishing the transaction quickly, Laster’s may choose to purchase their piece, however, the downside is the client will earn less. If they can be patient and allow Laster’s to use their extensive knowledge and contacts, they will likely fetch a higher price. Larry indicated the average price they pay to purchase something is around 35% of what they expect the sale price to be. He emphasized “expect” because they cannot know for certain how much a piece might

LASTER’S fetch until the sale happens, however, they generally are able to predict with a fair amount of accuracy. For being patient, the client receives 60% of the sale price on consignment. How quickly an individual piece may sell depends on hundreds of different criteria, however, quality and uniqueness are big determining factors. For example, they took a Dale Chihuly blown glass sculpture in on consignment and found a buyer in the Midwest in 3 days. The day before our conversation, they had just shipped an Italian oil painting to a buyer in Italy, brought to them by a local patron. I am curious to see how long it will take the necklace made from monkey teeth I spotted in the store to find a new home! appraised value. This practice leads many unscrupulous dealers to artificially raise the value to increase their commission. This is why they don’t charge for appraisals. Laster’s reputation for excellence directly led many area estates to use them to find appropriate markets for pieces they either wanted to sell or acquire. I never fail to get a history lesson while in the store. This time it was a Native American bow and arrow set, complete with a quiver adorned with victory mark-

WINE & DINE AT
By Kristen Margo Daukas
The weather seems to finally have broken here in the Triad and everywhere you look, there are people sitting outside enjoying the longer days and warmer evenings. Guests arriving at 6th and Vine hoping to sit outside could be dismayed to find the front patio full, but a quick walk through the inside reveals one of Winston’s best-kept secrets - 6th and Vine has a back patio that is nothing short of amazing! Surrounded by painted brick walls, the back patio rivals any big city seating area I’ve ever been to. There are flowers and plants in every nook and cranny you can imagine and it creates

the perfect setting for dinner and drinks with friends and family. 6th and Vine opened 14 years ago when the owners saw the potential in that area of downtown. With the success of Sweet Potatoes down the road and the popularity of the growing Gallery Hops, the restaurant quickly became one of the hottest spots in town. With their vast wine menu, unique culinary dishes, and passionate and caring staff, they’ve remained a local’s favorite since. The crowd that frequents 6th and Vine is an eclectic mix of personalities and ages - you’ll find the younger 20-somethings sitting next to retired folks and everything in between. Come in on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, and these groups will be mingling with the background sounds of a DJ or live music, added to the conversation and laughter. Open for lunch Tuesday - Friday, dinner service Tuesday - Sunday, and brunch Saturday and Sunday, the menu at 6th and Vine is a foodie’s dream. They’ve recently

changed their brunch menu to include dishes such as Bananas Foster French Toast, Maple Jalapeno Bacon, and a special Bloody Mary - which could be a main dish in of itself as it has the Maple Jalapeno Bacon, a large shrimp, and olive as the garnish, and is made with Tito’s Vodka. But a new brunch menu isn’t enough - a new dinner menu will be rolled out in a few weeks that, in addition to the new items, will still have guest and staff favorites LIVE MUSIC / NIGHTLIFE Bull’s Tavern: Karaoke, 9:00 pm Old Nick’s Pub: Team Trivia w/ Host Jonathan Lusk, 7:30p Village Square Tap House: Music Bingo, 7:00 pm WINERY | BREWERY | DISTILLERY Foothills Brewing Tasting Room: GT Fusion, 5:30 pm Foothills Brewpub: Bluegrass Wed - Shiloh Hill, 8p Thu May 9, 2019 ARTS / FAMILY First Christian Church: Jana Alayra Concert, 6:30 pm GreenHill: Adult Workshop | Alcohol Painting, 1p, 6p High Point Museum: At the Old Ballgame, 10:00 am SECCA: Man of La Mancha, 7:30 pm SECU Family House: Kid Friendly Volunteer Day, 10 am The Sunset Theater: Randolph Arts Guild Emerging Artist Series Presents: Mightier Than Me, 7:00 pm FESTIVAL / OUTDOORS BB&T Ballpark: Thirsty Thursday with the WS Dash, 7p Reynolda Village Shops and Restaurants: Rodney Crowell Concert, 8:00 pm LIVE MUSIC / NIGHTLIFE Bull’s Tavern: Adwela & the Uprising 10p Harper’s Restaurant: Trivia, 8:00 pm Horigan’s House of Taps: Paint Night, 6:00 pm O.Henry Hotel: Cocktails & Jazz: Liz Penn, 6:00 pm Old Nick’s Pub: Pool Tournament, 7:00 pm

The Blackberry Duck dish has been on the menu for 3 rotations as it’s so popular with guests. Looking for a solid steak dish? Try the Mocha Crusted Sirloin with a White Chocolate Cognac Creme Sauce or the Prime Ribeye currently served with a Cabernet Butter but soon to be replaced with a Smoked Pistachio Pesto. Lighter fares to try are the Baked Goat Cheese Salad or the Poached Pear Salad with bleu cheese - both are long time favorites. But what about the wine? With more than 40 wines served by the glass, 6th and Vine is one of the best (if not the best) places in town to try new and unique Continued on page 14

wines. Just grab the wine list, which is on an actual wine bottle, and you’ll find a special section for sparkling wines, white wines, red wines, and a special reserved list for wines from around the world. The wine is always fresh as they use the Coravin system which allows them to pour from the bottle without removing the cork. The wine list is changed twice a year or when the bar staff and owner starts to get bored with the current one, so you’ll always find something new to try. With ½ price glasses on Thursdays, it’s the perfect opportunity to push your palette to try new things! Decorated with big comfy sofas and chairs, and local art hanging on the wall (that is available to purchase!), the staff at 6th and Vine do everything they can to make wine comfortable. They’ll ask a few questions and pick a wine from the list that they’ll think you’ll like and almost always choose the right one! If you’re in the mood for something other than wine, their handcrafted cocktails won’t disappoint. The Cucumber Martini is perfect for the warmer weather as well as the different spins on Moscow Mules and the newly added Gingerberry Sparkler is quickly becoming a brunch favorite! Next time you’re wanting to celebrate with friends or family, you will be delighted by all the offerings at 6th and Vine. Just be sure to do it on the patio! New Brunch Menu!

They have about thirty beers on tap, and around 40 other cans and bottles of craft beer to choose from, making it a spectacular place to try something new. To top things off, Village Square Taphouse also has a full bar and a great wine selection, making it a perfect hangout spot even for those who aren’t into the craft beer scene. This bar is also a great place to watch any 16 |
sports games because they have plenty of flat screen TV’s all around the bar, and were even named the best sports bar in Forsyth County by a Triad vote. At the end of renovations, there will be four pool tables which are free to play on for patrons,
