X(caret) Marks the Spot! By Kristen Margo Daukas Thanks to The Streatery in Winston-Salem, those who took advantage of the opportunity to support our downtown restaurants by dining outside, for the first time in months life seemed almost normal for everyone. But here we are already staring at the incoming cooler weather. This bizarre year has left us all with a warped sense of time and summer feels like it was eons ago and just yesterday at the same time. I’m not sure about you, but I’m not ready to hibernate again this soon… I want the warm, sunny days to continue. I want to keep supporting our local businesses and restaurants. I want to keep hearing laughter - even if it’s muffled by our ever-present masks. Whatever it takes, I want to hold on to the bold and beautiful colors and flavors that only Summer knows how to give us! But since I cannot stop time, I’ll have to find a way to recreate those things and I know just the spot to do that. Xcaret Mexican Grill and Cantina located in downtown Winston-alem on 4th Street! It is nearly impossible to step foot into Xcaret and not immediately feel happy and warm. It’s as though you’ve left Winston and stepped onto a resort in Mexico. The colors are wild and vibrant, the decor is authentic, and the music makes you want to dance! Xcaret opened its doors in 2017 and guests have been coming back for the warm and vibrant atmosphere and outstanding hospitality since then. Diners have come to love the truly authentic menu that has a wide variety of options to choose from. Crowd favorites include the A.C.P. which is grilled chicken with cheese dip served with rice (personal note - for some reason this is the Continued on page 8 6 |

XCARET MEXICAN GRILL & CANTINA

Continued from Page 6

go-to dish for my daughters they love it so much). Also, the A.C.T. which is the same dish as above but also includes shrimp and steak in addition to the chicken. A dish that is gaining in popularity is the Molcajete which is your choice of chicken, steak, shrimp, or chorizo and served with rice, beans pico de gallo, avocado, and 2 tortillas. Vegetarians actually have a good amount of items to choose from which is always a great thing to see. Their tortillas are made from scratch daily and they only use the freshest of ingredients to make their creative dishes! Obviously, you can’t have the full authentic vibe of a Mexican Cantina without the libations to go with it! With a fully stocked bar and an impressive selection of liquors, you will only be limited by your creativity to have the cocktail of your dreams. If you can’t come up with anything on your own, pick one of the many craft recipes from their drink menu. If you like mojitos, definitely give their Mexican Mojito a try. It’s made with 1800 Silver Tequila and is muddled with lime juice, mint leaves, Cointreau, Agave Nectar & a splash of club soda. Want to keep it traditional? By far one of the best margaritas Old fashioned candy store you’re going to find in town is their Premium In Downtown Greensboro Margarita but if you’re in the mood for a martini, they’ve even got a full menu of those!! They have different food and cocktail specials each day and every day the popular Quesabirrias Tacos are on special for $9. If you’re looking for a truly authentic Mexican restaurant and you haven’t been yet, you need to move this restaurant to the top of your list ASAP! They are open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week and if you’re not comfortable dining out in person, they offer delivery thru partners such as GrubHub, Takeout Central, and Postmates as well as online ordering for pickup!

Tap That Axe Hits the Bullseye for Fun! By Kristen Margo Daukas When Michael Citro opened Tap That Axe in Apil of 2019, one of the main reasons he did was due to the lack of variety in things to actually DO in the area. Sure we have bowling, movies, miniature golf, etc. but you can only do those things so many times before you’re bored with them and honestly don’t want to do them anymore. He began putting the plans in motion after visiting an ax-throwing spot in the Midwest where they were already growing in popularity and when he returned to Winston, he began putting the details together to bring an ax-throwing venue to town. Would the concept of throwing axes while having a beer go over here? Judging from the packed cabins on the weekends before COVID shut everything down, that would be a solid yes! Tap That Axe is located in the Village Square shopping center in Clemmons located directly off of Interstate 40 and Lewisville Clemmons Road and business has been fast-flying from day 1. The space is over 5,000 square feet and has 16 targets, housed in 8 lanes, as well as a private room that can house up to 24 throwers. They were actually the very first ax-throwing venue in the Triad when they opened! They’ve had to modify how they are running the venue due to the restrictions from COVID. They are currently running at 50% capacity and strongly encouraged to reserve your spot online to ensure you get one of the cabins. You can only play with the group you come in with and there is only one group allowed per cabin. All the cabins/groups are spaced 12 feet apart and guests are required to wear their masks when they are not in

their cabin or with the group they came in. All employees are wearing masks 100% of the time and you’ll find hand sanitizer all around the venue. Mike and his team are doing a stellar job to make sure you and your group have a fun and safe experience! Tap That Axe is perfect for celebrating special occasions, such as bachelor/bachelorette parties, birthday parties, and even corporate team-building events to sharpen those working relationships! You even have the option to rent out the entire space for your own private event. They are taking reservations now for holiday parties - both personal and professional ones and it’s perfect for families - however, kids have to be 13 and older in order to throw. Never thrown an ax before? No need to be worried because let’s be real - how many of us have actually thrown an ax? When you arrive, you’ll check in with the staff and if you haven’t already filled out your waiver, you’ll do so then. Once everyone has checked in, you’re then assigned to a professional Axepert (you didn’t think you were just going to be handed a bucket of axes and sent on your way, did you?!). Your Axepert will spend an ample amount of time with you and your group reviewing safety points to ensure everyone’s safety and then start coaching you on proper throwing techniques. There are two different sized axes you’ll be throwing, do not be alarmed, they’ll show you proper procedures for both sizes. Once your group has been coached on technique, it’s time for the real fun and games - throwing against (not at) each other! Again - reservations are highly recommended due to the reduced capacity as well as the lanes fill up quickly; especially on Friday and Saturday nights. Closed-toed shoes are a must but if you forget, they do have Crocs available to rent that are disinfected after every use. They offer a huge selection of craft beers, ones which are largely produced in North Carolina, this also includes select spiked seltzers and wines by the can(s). There are non-alcoholic beverage options as well. They do not have food, however, you are welcome to bring food in or order from numerous restaurants that are located nearby and are happy to cater to your various food preferences.
