CELEBRATING 4 YEARS OF COMMUNITY AND GOOD EATS Living in the Bermuda Run section of the Triad area used to mean that if you wanted to get something to eat, it usually meant a 20 minute trip into the Winston-Salem area. But that was partially resolved when six friends decided to go in together and open up Tanglewood Pizza Company on Highway 158, close to Tanglewood Park. While it may be a bit challenging to find your way into the parking lot if you’re a first time visitor, don’t give up! Just drive past the restaurant, turn into the next driveway and follow the road (or your nose!) to their front door! Tanglewood Pizza Company - fondly referred to as TPC - is Davie County’s first 100% wood-fired artisanal pizza restaurant and they proudly feature locally sourced vegetables, herbs, pork, beef, and poultry in most of their menu items. Diner favorites include the giant pretzel served with beer cheese, hickory-smoked wings (which are finished off in the wood-fired oven), the Buffalo Mac-n-Cheese, and, of course, their creative pizzas! In addition to pizzas, they also feature a select group of pasta dishes, calzones, and unique sandwiches that will please any

sandwich lover in your group. Make sure you check out their daily specials for both food and drinks! Looking for the perfect drink to go with your food? TPC features 25 different draft beers - most of which are local to our area or to the state of NC. You can get your growler filled but at this time, they do not offer flights. Not a fan of craft beer? You’re not going to miss out - they also keep a few staple beers on tap all the time (Guinness, Bud Light, etc.) for those who have their favorite go-to brew. Like many of the restaurants and bars in our area, you can see the most up to date list of what’s on tap by checking out their UnTappd page. Supporting the community they live in is a big part of what TPC represents. Whether it’s something big like the Tour de Tanglewood for MS or walks to raise money for breast cancer awareness or something smaller like supporting the local schools, TPC has been very generous in their support of the causes their neighbors believe in. Guests can find live music every Saturday night and as long as it’s not freezing outside, you can join in on the cornhole tournament every Tuesday evening - complete with music and prizes! Looking for a place to host a special event or celebration? TPC is more than happy to welcome you and your guests for that - all you need to do is give them a call and let them worry about the rest. Speaking of special events, make sure you mark your calendars for November 23rd when TPC will be celebrating their fourth anniversary all day and all night. Throughout the day, they will have food and drink specials, giveaways, as well as live music. Head over from 5-8 and listen to The Hold Up and then from 8-11, the sounds of local favorites, Down the Mountain will close the night down on the fourth-anniversary celebration!

SOUTHEND BREWS UP GREAT BEER, ON-SITE KITCHEN & GOOD FAMILY TIME

by Rob Ainbinder South End Brewing Company, located at 117 W. Lewis St. in downtown Greensboro, occupies the expanded and renovated former Gibb’s Hundred location, across the street from Boxcar Bar + Arcade and next door to Fainting Goat Spirits. The 3,000-square-foot taproom has seating, community tables, and private tables for 100 customers. SouthEnd Brewing is the brainchild of the father & son team of Eric & Seth Kevorkian. Before launching SouthEnd, Eric was a home brewer for 10 years. But, he says of the transition to SouthEnd, “Homebrewing is fun. But, it does not qualify you to run a brewery. We hired brewmaster William Brown. He is a critical component of what I expect when you have success. So many home homebrewers become professional brewers. Sure. But there’s a journey to getting there. There’s also a lot of other aspects to opening an operating business. We’ve got a team with all those skills, they don’t reside in just one person. It’s a real family effort. As a team. It makes the business stronger. Makes it better.” This newest addition to the Triad brewing industry, SouthEnd is open with 14 taps, 12 dispensing original brews from brewmaster William Brown and two taps with ciders from outside makers. Brown says he focuses on being “true to style” with each beer he brews. SouthEnd Brewing seeks to differentiate itself in the local market in several ways, says Seth, “the first thing that comes to mind is the fact that we have on-site, full time kitchen staff. Only one other brewery in Greensboro has food, all the other breweries do a food truck model, which is fine. You get some variety. But plenty of times I’ve gone to breweries and wanted something to eat. If you don’t like what food truck is today then you’re out of luck, also wait time with food trucks tends to be pretty long when it’s crowded. We wanted to have a range of options for people to eat while they’re drinking. The food that we have is intended to be shareables, small plates with flavors that go with our beer. It’s a nice menu.” In addition to the Continued on page 10 8 |

extensive beer and food selections, soft drinks and wine will also be sold. Seth says of favorite beers, “I like Belgians quite a lot and I’m getting into them this time of year. Stouts, Imperial stouts, you know, heavier and darker. As we get into colder weather. I definitely appreciate those.” “A lot of people will ask us what kind of beer are you going to, brew? I’m always surprised by that question because as a beer drinker, I like all the beers and there are many styles. And William’s skill and our preference is to be able to offer many styles. When you have 14 taps, why would you limit yourself to the corner of the world of beer? And we offer a nice menu which supports the beer. We’re focused on pairing the food with the beer just makes it a little bit more well rounded of an experience”, Eric said. In developing the SouthEnd Brewing name, Seth says, “We kicked around a lot of names. Probably over a hundred. Eventually, we landed on SouthEnd, it might sound a little generic, but the impetus was we wanted it to be a community focused business. So the name isn’t about us, it’s about the South End community that we’re a part of which has grown quite a lot in the last few years. It’s turning into a really cool part of town. We wanted to lay some claim to involvement in the development of this community in this neighborhood.” There’s a lot of reasons to check out South End, but one in particular they’re proud of is the back patio. “We’ve put a lot of investment into turning the 2200 square feet in the back, into our beer garden, an industrial space with a lot of landscaping that makes it feel like a softer green space surrounding a center game area.” And SouthEnd Brewing’s community involvement extends to other businesses in the South end community including Greensboro’s the Forge. Many of the tables and other things at SouthEnd brewing were designed and built by different members of the Forge. Some of the metalworking, as well as woodworking came from members of the Forge. The team of SouthEnd brewing use their space to showcase the Forge member’s skills. It’s a large space and it has a lot of flexibility in what we can do with events to utilize that. In the future, SouthEnd Brewing intends to be good partners to charities focused specifically on that issues facing downtown. Old Nick Williams Distillery - Forgotten No More! by Kristen Margo Daukas Tucked away in the woods, off a backcountry road in Lewisville is the home to one of the oldest distilleries in the US. If you’re going too fast, you’ll miss the sign that directs guests to the tasting room and the place where a 250-year-old recipe is being used to make some of the finest bourbon, whiskey, and rum that you have ever tasted. Most of the stories about Old Nick’s Distillery begin with the year 1768 but truth be told, this family’s history goes back way before then. Other than that pesky time in history called Prohibition, for more than 250 years, the Williams family has been committed to honoring the traditions that their ancestors brought to this country. Today, you have two generations of the Williams family who oversee the family business which is still located on the very land that was home to Nicholas Williams in 1851. It was during a renovation of these original homes that a secret safe was

discovered under the staircase and inside that safe held historical documentation of the day-to-day operations of the distillery, sales receipts from all over the world, and thank you notes from past US Presidents. Many of these treasures are on display in the current tasting room. Finding these treasures of the past fueled the current Williams’ passion to bring back their family’s business. One visit to your local ABC store and you can see for yourself the boom in craft Continued on page 14

OLD NICK WILLIAMS FARM & DISTILLERY

distilleries our state has seen over the past few years. But the struggle has been real for these smaller crafters. Until recently, September 1st as a matter of fact, in order for guests to sample the liquors on-site, they would have to take a tour of the distillery and even then, would only be able to have a sample - it was illegal to mix the spirit with anything like a mixer or a soda. In addition, you were limited to only being able to but 5 bottles in an entire calendar year. Now, thanks in part to the work that Zeb Williams put in, distilleries are able to open up their offerings to include mixed beverages (using the liquor created onsite), wine, and beer. What was a limited audience before has now become a completely different game and Old Nick’s plans on taking full advantage of this law change. They’re already planning a patio addition to their tasting room which will accommodate more guests, outdoor games, and food trucks. In addition to their own spirits, they’re collaborating with select local breweries to create craft brews using their bourbon barrels - definitely something to keep an eye out for! Their offerings have been extended to include Carolina Whiskey, Carolina Bourbon Whiskey (my personal favorite and recently won double gold at the San Francisco World Spirit Competition), and

the newest addition Coattail Cinnamon Whiskey. They’ve also added rum to their family of spirits! No self-respecting whiskey lover can let this local treasure go by without a visit or two so be sure to keep an eye on their site and their social media so you know when all the new happenings are planned! 2675 Williams Road Lewisville, NC 336-946-1012 | oldnickwhiskey.com
