Wow what a year. COVID-19 has certainly made for a miserable year, but never fear Woods Of Terror is here and we are open.

We have been working with our local and state officials and we have some strict guidelines. But thank goodness we are OK. We will be required to wear a mask and we will be required to take everyone’s temperature. We will be social distancing but we will be open. My biggest concern this year is to save Halloween for everybody not just Halloween for the first two weeks of October but save Halloween for everybody all the way through the end of October. We can do that by following the state guidelines We are also running a virtual queue line so when you get to the woods you will be given a QR code that you will scan with your phone. You will then be placed in a virtual queue line and when we are ready for you we will text you and say come on in. So a big part of our social distancing this year will be you waiting in your car in a virtual queue Continued on page 14 Detailed event information available at www.336events.com

Where There’s Fire, There’s SMoHK’D By Kristen Margo Daukas When SMoHK’D opened on North Elm Street in the Fall of 2019, the owners and staff were looking to fill a bit of a void that they felt was in that area - too many higherend places and not enough places that offered a more relaxing and less stuffy type of atmosphere. But don’t kid yourself, this is not your typical roadside BBQ joint with red and white checkered plastic tablecloths. The interior is just as appealing to the eye as the smell of the smoke is to your nose as you approach the front door! There have been a lot of changes at SMoHK’D since they opened their doors last fall. They’ve recently changed their management staff as well as fired up the menu with new dishes and the bar has new cocktails for guests to enjoy. The restaurant saw great traffic up until March when COVID-19 shut everything down but like many places, they shape-shifted and offered their food to-go. They also started offering family meal deals that provided enough food for a family of 4 (with options to add on items if your family is larger). While a lot of places have stopped offering those family meal bundles, they continue to have a special meal every day - something that I wish more places had continued to do! With the smoker at the center of the kitchen and the menu, if you like your meats smoked, you’re going to love this place! So what’s everyone ordering and talking about? Half of my family is from Texas and those people are serious about their brisket, so if you’ve got Texans raving about your brisket, you know it’s good stuff. Same for our New York friends and their Continued on page 8 6 |

pastrami! And both of those items are big sellers. The other most popular from the meat selection are the ribs and the turkey. Honestly, the only way I can eat turkey is if it’s smoked - otherwise, it lacks flavor and it’s dry… not a problem with either of those at SMoHK’D! “Would you like to start with an appetizer before your meal” is a question you’re going to be asked and with more than 10 to choose from, you have a big decision to make. The ones that are at the top of most people’s lists are the Mac and Cheese Bites, the Jalapeno Poppers, and the Burnt Skewers. In case you’re not aware, the best of the brisket is the burnt end - then they braise it in their BBQ jus. Another appetizer that is quickly becoming a popular item are SMoHK’D Nachos which should have the word ‘loaded’ in the description somewhere Old fashioned candy store In Downtown Greensboro

because of how many items are piled on to them! One thing for sure - you are not going to go away hungry when you come to eat… a lot of food is dished up for diners! Leaving the office and looking for a place to meet friends for a drink? SMoHK’D has a fantastic “Alive After Five” happy hour that includes ½ price appetizers, $3 import bottles, $6 call highballs and $4 well highball cocktails and ½ priced wine and that’s in addition to their daily specials! With TVs all around the restaurant, it’s also a great spot to catch some college football on Saturday.

Bulk Candies, Fudge, Truffles, Soda, Classic Candies

Their hours are different than they were last year and are currently open Sunday Thursday 11 - 8 and Friday and Saturday 11 - 9. Whether you eat in the dining room or take home dinner for the family, if you haven’t been to SMoHK’D lately, it definitely needs to be on your list to visit soon!

al fresco at its Finest! Can we all agree that one of the most frustrating things about 2020 is that we have all been cooped up inside much more than we would have been normally? It was this exact fact that enabled the team at Giovanni’s to get thru the capacity limitations because, while all of us were hunkered down at home during “shelter in place”, there was a lot of action happening behind restaurant doors. Before the warm weather arrived, they took advantage of the downtime and did a lot of renovations both on the inside and the outside of the restaurant. Then, when the day came that they could welcome guests back in for dining, they would be greeted by a beautiful restaurant! One of the most notable changes was the vast expansion of their outside dining area. Reminiscent of a classic Spanish style patio, guests can enjoy dinner and drinks and feel

as though they’ve escaped the tedious daily grind we all face. On weekends, you can listen to live music as you enjoy the company of your friends. The extended patio also means that the restaurant can seat more guests comfortably while observing the current occupancy limits. Inside guests will notice the upgrades that resulted in an elegant yet relaxing place to enjoy the handcrafted menu items and specialty cocktails and wine. Giovanni’s has one of the most expansive menus of classic Italian fare that you can find in the area and we’re talking much more than ‘just’ pasta (but they’ve got a lot of that as well!). A few of their grill offerings include Veal Chop, Filet (which you can also get with lobster), Swordfish, and Grilled Quail. The pescatarians in your group will be tickled to find a good variety of fish to choose from - Chilean Sea Bass, Lobster Parmigiana (there’s also a shrimp version), Zuppa di Pesce, and Lobster Diavolo. There are EIGHT! Veal dishes on Giovanni’s menu, creative chicken selection, and of course, pasta dishes that would make Nonna proud. If you’re in the mood for something lighter, there are appetizers and pizzas to choose from. Not to be bested by the food, the wine and cocktail selection is guaranteed to pair well with whatever you choose for dinner. Select wines are half off on Wednesdays and Thursdays you can get $6 martinis and house drinks as well as $6 appetizers and small plates. Food specials include half-price entrees with the purchase of a regular entree on Mondays and Tuesdays and all of their menu items are available for take-out. And, while live music is a weekly thing, in September, Giovanni’s hosted their first Wine and Music Festival which was a huge success. The event included several bands that played throughout the day and night, and festival-goers had the option to upgrade their tickets and have a full food buffet included in the price. The event was such a success that you can plan on seeing it happen again next year, so keep an eye out for an announcement next year. Upcoming events include a Halloween party on Saturday, October 31st with Jukebox Rehab playing. Come dressed to impress and if that means a Halloween costume to you - wear it! For a schedule of bands that are playing weekly at Giovanni’s, check their website and their Facebook page which are constantly being updated with details. The cooler weather is right around the corner so take advantage of the time to be outside at Giovanni’s but have no fear - when the cooler weather does appear, they have plenty of fire pits and heat lamps to keep you warm and toasty!
