Local Taste of
ITALY...
By Sarah K Wilson
Nestled into a complex at 177 Jonestown Road stands Italian restaurant, Tre Nonne, named for three grandmothers. This gem is family run, and got its start close to three years ago when owners Tony, Alice, and Debby Maresca decided that the Triad needed an authentic taste of Italy. The owners and head chef stay true to their roots in Naples by making everything fresh from scratch, just like their grandma’s used to. As soon as you enter Tre Nonne, you are met with savory aromas you would expect to find at a family dinner in Italy. The smells of fresh baked bread and handmade pasta spill over the lowkey and relaxed dining room. Everyone is treated like family, and met with phenomenal service. The motto at Tre Nonne is simple. “You come as friends, and you leave as family. The dining room walls are covered with pictures of

the Maresca family and patrons who have become part of the extended family. This philosophy extends further than the patrons within the restaurant, but also to the local community by dedicating proceeds from charity event wine dinners. They focus on anti-bullying, and autism awareness charities, as the Maresca family has a personal connection to each cause. The owners strive to make a positive difference in the world whether serving up amazing food, or raising proceeds for charitable causes. The pasta, bread, dressings, desserts, and even the limoncello is made in house, with

Carmine has been cooking since he was a child, and works very closely with the Maresca’s to design the seasonally changing menu, and four course wine dinners. Tony Maresca beams when he talks of Carmine. “He takes our family recipes, which have been handed down through the generations and updates them, puts his own touches in and makes them even better!” Tre Nonne has created quite a buzz

TRE NONNE
Continued from Page 6
ners outside of the charity events. A typical wine dinner is held around the third or fourth Monday of each month, and consists of five wines thoughtfully paired to compliment all four courses while a speaker guides you throughout the tasting. All wines paired are also offered for sale at the end of the dinner, making it easy convenient and to discover a multitude of new wines in a fun and interactive environment. One thing they are known for is their classic tomato gravy, and this isn’t typical Southern brown or sausage gravy. It’s a gift from their family to yours, and only available on the Sundays. Chef Carmine slow cooks the tomato-based gravy 8 hours before reaching its peak of perfection. Italian sausage and meatballs practically fall apart on your plate and the symphony of flavors will have you cleaning your plate and asking for more. The restaurant isn’t only focused on food, customers, community, and desserts. Tre Nonne is also famous for the homemade limoncello. It takes a month for each batch of limoncello to be made with a top secret recipe belonging to the family, making it a true labor of love. They won’t share the
recipe, but they have no problem in sharing their limoncello with the Triad. Keep in touch with the current specials by visiting their website and FaceBook pages. To top it all off, Tre Nonne also offers a generous Family & Friend’s Rewards program. The restaurant accepts reservations via opentable.com as well as by phone at (336)842-3493. If you haven’t yet experienced Old World hospitality and excellent meals with pleasant Co, become part of the family at Tre Nonne. Enjoy!

The GSO
Run/Walk for Autism at Jaycee Park, Supports Programs to Help Local Families, and Celebrates it’s 10th Year EJ Clay is about to turn 10. He loves puzzles, bubbles, music, anything outdoors, and most of all, basketball. “EJ loves to play basketball,” said his mom, Cecily Shropshire, explaining that he is tall for his age. “They call him the little LeBron.” He’s also very funny and is often the class clown, she said. Just two years ago, EJ, was mostly nonverbal. “He couldn’t really express what he wanted,” his mom said. He had been diagnosed with autism when he was 21/2,
and remained shy and extremely attached to her. When he started attending the afterschool program at the GSO office of the Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC), he was always saying, “Mommy coming to get me?” “Mommy coming?” EJ attended ASNC’s summer program as well, and the interaction with the ASNC staff and other children, as well as the structure, made a big difference. “All of a sudden last summer, he just started talking,” Shropshire said. “Now he Continued on page 12

actually uses full sentences. That kind of shocked everybody there.” Judy Smithmyer, ASNC Autism Resource Specialist Coordinator, has also supported EJ and his mom. “In the two years since I have known him, he has made such great progress,” Smithmyer said. “He is happy and excited to be at our Cntr and often greets me with a ‘Hi, Judy.’” Smithmyer worked with EJ’s schoolteachers so they would know how best to support him. EJ had been going to a school where they didn’t know how to work with him, his mother said, and they called her at her workplace so often that she lost her job. Now, EJ is doing great in school. He’s more open and adventurous, and he speaks his mind, his mother said. “It’s been such a change.” On Sept. 29, hundreds of participants will come out to raise money for the programs that made such a difference for EJ and his mother. The 10th annual GSO Run/Walk for Autism at Jaycee Park will include a 5K race, a recreational 1K run/walk, music, refreshments, and a resource fair. Participants can register at www.GSOrunwalkforautism. com. “The Autism Society of North Carolina is a wonderful organization,” Shropshire said. “The people there, they really, truly care.”

Down the St and Back In Time By Ray Morgan
On a recent Friday morning, I stopped by and spent a pleasant hour talking with Larry and Ryan Laster, father and son owners of Laster’s Fine Art & Antiques. Regular visitors know they will find a wide collection of fine art, antiques and unusual items, all mixed with a healthy dose of humor! I asked Larry if he bought items or worked on consignment and learned he does both. Consignment represents about
30% of his business, however, for items of a higher caliber, in construction and presentation, he is willing to buy them outright. Larry has a keen eye for original, eyecatching items he knows others will want to take home. “We’re not looking for standard items, we are looking for things that stand out. Most of the people who come in here have the common things but they want something that really makes a statement. Continued on page 20

So that’s what we’re always looking for, those pieces that will make a room.” “We depend on people downsizing because our inventory tends to come from estates. They look to us to find a home for items which have been cherished by a particular family, sometimes for generations.” “We’re a hometown firm, been in business 43 years, 8 years in this gallery. We try to find things that will go back out the door and make people happy. We offer a free assessment as a public service. Most every dealer charges for the appraisal. it seemed as though it was gouging people to charge them what we had to charge. So we determined doing a public service assessment would be fairer and certainly open the door for more people to use us.” He had one client who brought in a piece of artwork after he spotted the sign while on his way to Goodwill, but decided to get a professional opinion first. Larry and Ryan researched the artist and what prices his work had fetched. Turns out, it was remarkably valuable! Because he is always careful with a family’s personal information, Larry didn’t want to disclose anything further but added it is better to bring it by and be certain! He told of another client who brought in a pastel from WWI but didn’t protect it and ended up smudging the entire piece. The value went from $45,000 to $0 in the space it took for the client to walk in from the parking lot! When asked what the future of the antiques industry looks like to him, Larry lit up. “I think things will be getting better because of the amount of stuff coming on the market will increase. The young people who have been shunning ‘brown furniture’

overall will realize that the goods available to them, that they seem to be interested in, is going to fall apart in 3-5 years. And then they’ll be looking for things that are more substantial, in solid woods and original works of art instead of signed, limited edition prints.” Larry is particularly proud of the feedback he gets from customers. “We’ve been told by so many clients, there is no place else like Laster’s. In fact, we’ve been told there’s no place like us between here and D.C. Even folks from Williamsburg say they don’t know anyplace like us. And that’s a compliment! We feel what we are providing is a particular niche you may not see every day. And we get complimented virtually every day on the quality of our goods and the amount of things we have to offer.” If you love antiques, and learning the history behind them, make your way to 664 S. Stratford Rd. or visit www.LastersFineArt.com. Larry’s final piece of advice – “If you see something in our store and fall in love with it, get it now, because it’s likely not going to be here when you come back!”
