Devils Backbone was founded by Steve and Heidi Crandall in 2008. They were on a skiing trip in Italy and tasted a beer from Germany called Weihenstephan, the rest is history… When they opened the brewpub in a new community called “The Village of Glen Ferry” people were soon asking for the beer and bottles so they decided to break ground on an outpost facility in Lexington, VA. Their forecast for this new brewery was to brew about 10,000 barrels in the next 10 years, the first 3 years they brewed almost 45,000 barrels (1 barrel = 31.5 gallons). This brewery won “Small Brewpub of the Year” in 2012, “Small Brewing Company” of the Year in 2013 and “Mid-Size Brewing Company” of the Year in 2014 all at the Great American Beer Festival. They have also have 25 medals for their different types of beers at the GABF. Now that’s winning some metals!!! The beer was launched in NC the first week of August with the Vienna Lager, 8 Point IPA, Gold Leaf Lager and Schwatzbier being available. These beers are all true to style and very drinkable. (From Spencer) (From Tim) We reviewed the Vienna Lager of Devil’s Backbone not only on The Less Desirables but also on The Beer Dads Podcast, another show on The Less Desirables Podcast Network. The lager is a smooth and malty-finishing lager. Sometimes I feel lagers can be weak. This is not the case with DB’s Vienna Lager. A nice caramel color that tastes exactly like a beer with that color should taste, full bodied without being heavy (it’s refreshing and light), with a nice caramel finish. I started on The Beer Dads and only rated it a 3.75 out of 5 on Untappd, the beer rating app, but by the time I had it on The Less Desirables, I had changed it to a 4 out of 5. This was a great beer and it could be an “everyday” beer that could be drunk at dinner, while watching the game or even after mowing the lawn. Prost! Try it locally at: Second and Green Tavern, Stumble Stilskins, Cooper Ale House and City Beverage to name a few local places. Detailed event information available at www.336events.com

LaRue 313 S Greene St Greensboro NC (336) 252-2253 www.laruenc.com French for “by the road”, LaRue restaurant is a testament to a drive for perfection. LaRue was a nickname given to Trey’s wife, Cheryl Bell during high school track, and this athleticism continued as both she and her husband Trey became worldclass pole vaulters.

As Trey became a chef, he was able to fully develop his passion for creating an exquisite dining experience. By experimenting with a variety of progressive/modern cuisine, Chef Bell has come up with some exotic combinations patrons won’t find anywhere else. His menu changes monthly, but always includes 2 salads, 4 appetizers, and 4

entrees. Best yet, his creations are always flexible enough to accommodate vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free preferences. And that’s to say nothing of his desserts, which are equally palate-pleasing! Chef Bell credits his staff, which he says is the best in Greensboro, for much of his success. Each team member shares his passion for food and is given creative leeway to try things until each dish reaches perfection.

Greensboro Run/Walk for Autism and the High Point University men’s lacrosse team The High Point University men’s lacrosse team has quickly established a winning tradition in the first four years of its existence, but for Triad families with autism, some of the team’s off-the-field stats are what make the players outstanding: • • •

4 years of participating in the Greensboro Run/Walk for Autism as a team 56 lacrosse players ran last year $7,291 raised since 2011

The team has become a familiar sight at the annual fundraiser for the Autism Society of North Carolina. The players come straight from practice and “basically show up as the gun is going off for the race,” said Associate Head Coach Pat Tracy.

They might arrive at the last minute, but that doesn’t reflect their dedication. Each year, every player on the roster registers for the Run/Walk and takes the time to seek donations from family and friends beforehand. “We have really great kids who care a lot,” Tracy said. “They’re definitely not hesitant to go outside of their comfort zone to help.”

Tracy has a stepbrother with autism and had participated in fundraisers for the cause in Baltimore before coming to High Point. It was his idea to make the Greensboro Run/ Walk for Autism one of the team’s many community service projects. The first year, their team had just 19 players; last year, they were up to 56. “The guys have been unbelievable in being supportive of it,” Tracy said. Nick Bittner, a fifth-year senior, has been part of the lacrosse team since the beginning.

Participating in the Run/Walk for Autism meant a lot more to him last year, though, after he spent the summer working with children with autism during an internship with the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore. Bittner was part of a team led by a clinical psychologist that was teaching social behaviors. “It really opened my eyes to see what autism is, and to see the effort it takes for families who have children that have autism,” he said. Last fall, Bittner shared his experiences with his teammates. “I had seen firsthand what donating to the Autism Society could do to help people with autism.”

Bittner, who is a biology major and hopes to attend medical school, is now considering the autism field specifically. “I definitely found a certain passion for it,” he said.

In the meantime, he’ll join his teammates one last time for the Greensboro Run/Walk for Autism on Sept. 26. Coach Tracy said they wouldn’t miss it. “We’re excited. Our guys look forward to it every year,” he said. “Our guys really do enjoy being out there, they enjoy supporting the cause and supporting the community and the families.” Step out to improve lives in the Greensboro Run/Walk for Autism on Saturday, Sept. 26! The event at UNCGreensboro will include a 5K race and a recreational 1K run/walk. Celebrate autism awareness and acceptance with music, refreshments, and vendor space that will showcase local businesses, service providers, support resources, and sponsors. Proceeds will fund local programs of the Autism Society of North Carolina. Register today: www.greensbororunwalkforautism.com
