Triad Stage began as a dream... Co-founders Preston Lane and Richard Whittington forged their artistic partnership as graduate students at the Yale School of Drama. After managing a theater in Connecticut for two years, they undertook the three-year task of opening their own theater in the heart of historic Greensboro. In September 1999, Triad Stage purchased the former Montgomery Ward building, which had been built in 1936 and sat vacant for almost 40 years. Renovations transformed the five-story building into a world-class theater center now called The Pyrle Theater, complete with a 300-seat theater and thrust stage, rehearsal hall, offices, two spacious lobbies and other audience amenities. The Grand Opening took place in January 2002 with Tennessee Williams’ modern classic Suddenly Last Summer.

In 2008, Triad Stage finished a second round of renovations to The Pyrle. A scene shop annex was added in the basement. The top floor underwent major construction to create the 90-seat UpStage Cabaret performance space, the Sloan Rehearsal Hall, and the studio and office facilities of WUNC Public Radio’s new Greensboro Bureau. In 2011, Triad Stage purchased a 30,000 square foot building near the Greensboro Coliseum Complex to serve as the theater’s new production facility, relocating its scene, costume and properties shops as well as its warehouse. In 2013, with significant support from The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, Triad Stage announced a major expansion of programming to be produced at the Hanesbrands Theatre in downtown Winston-Salem.

Now in its 14th season, Triad Stage has over 3,000 Season Passholders and more than 400 annual donors. The company has received accolades on national, state and local levels, including being named “One of the 10 Most Promising Emerging Theatre Companies” by the American Theatre Wing and “One of the Best Regional Theaters in America” by the Drama League of New York. Triad Stage has been voted the Triad’s “Best Live Theater” by the readers of the News & Record’s GoTriad ten years in a row and named “Professional Theatre of the Year” by the North Carolina Theatre Conference in 2003 and 2011. As a playwright, Preston’s plays and adaptations have been produced at Triad Stageand other theaters and universities. Preston has taught at UNCG, NC A&T, UNCSA, Greensboro College, SMU, and the Professional Actors Workshop at the Dallas Theater Center. He is an alumnus of the Drama League of New York’s Director’s Project. A native of Boone, NC, Preston received his BFA from UNCSA and his MFA from the Yale School of Drama. 11

Richard Whittington (Triad Stage Managing Director / Co-Founder) has served as Managing Director of Triad Stage since its inception. Rich earned an MFA in Theatre Management from the Yale School of Drama and has a BFA in Acting and Directing from Marymount Manhattan College. In 2007, Rich was appointed by the Governor to serve on the board of the NC Arts Council, where he is currently a member of the Executive Committee. He has previously served on the boards of ArtsNC and Downtown Greensboro, Inc. and has served on numerous grant panels throughout the state as well as for the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts. Rich has taught Theatre Management at Greensboro College and NC A&T University and has guest lectured at UNC Chapel Hill, UNC School of the Arts, Wake Forest University and UNCG. A native of Dallas, Texas, Rich served as Artistic Administrator for the Dallas Theater Center and Associate Producer of Dallas’ The Big D Festival of the Unexpected. Experience also includes work at the Roundabout Theatre in New York and StageWest in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 2010, Preston and Rich were honored with Downtown Greensboro, Inc.’s J. Edward Kitchen Leadership Award. In 2013, they received the Adelaide F. Holderness/H. Michael Weaver Award from UNCG for distinguished public service.

Patrick Barlow

PATRICK BARLOW (born March 18, 1947) is an English actor, comedian and playwright. His comedic alter ego, Desmond Olivier Dingle, is the founder, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of the two-man National Theatre of Brent, which has performed on stage, on television and on radio. Barlow is the scriptwriter, as well as lead performer, in many National Theatre of Brent productions, in particular All the World’s a Globe (1987), Desmond Olivier Dingle’s Compleat Life and Works of William Shakespeare (1995) and The Arts and How They Was Done (2007). In non-Theatre of Brent performances, he wrote and played in the 4-part situation comedy for radio called The Patrick and Maureen Maybe Music Experience which ran for four weeks in January of 1999. He played the part of Om in the radio adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s Small Gods (2006), which was adapted by Robin Brooks. Barlow played Bob in Is it Legal? (1996–1998), and he played the part of the vicar in Jam & Jerusalem. He has also written and directed his National Theatre of Brent material for television and played the part of Max in series 2 of the 2004 special of Absolutely Fabulous. Patrick Barlow wrote a stage adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps which premiered in June 2005, at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. After revision, the play opened at London’s Tricycle Theatre in August 2006, and after a successful run, transferred to the Criterion Theatre in Piccadilly in September 2006. The play has also been performed on Broadway since early 2008 — in Australia by the Melbourne Theatre Company in April 2008, in Wellington, New Zealand, by Circa Theatre in July/August 2009, and in Bancroft, Ontario, by Blackfly Theatre in July 2011.

John Buchan published nearly 30 novels and seven volumes of short stories. John Buchan’s official title was First Baron Tweedsmuir of Elsfield, Oxfordshire.

He worked as a special correspondent for The Times on the Western Front. The official War Propaganda Bureau commissioned him to write accounts of major battles and various propaganda booklets. Alfred Hitchcock’s film adaptation premiered in 1935 to critical and commercial success. Charles Bennett adapted the script for the 1935 film with Hitchcock. The female characters featured in the movie and play were not included in the original novel. Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll starred in original 1935 film. Madeleine Carroll was the first in a notorious line of Hitchcock’s “blondes” that later included Grace Kelly and Tippi Hedren. Madel eine Carro ll Robert Donat was known as the “Monte Cristo Man.” Hitchcock referred to Madeleine Carroll as “Scrubby Carroll” as a joke. The 39 Steps was Peggy Ashcroft’s second film. Hitchock was reported to say, “What interests me is the drama of being handcuffed” as one of the major themes of the film. Alfred Hitchcock made cameo appearances in 39 of his films — including The 39 Steps. North by Northwest is widely considered Hitchcock’s “American Thirty-Nine Steps.” In 2004, Total Film magazine named the Hitchcock film the 21st greatest British movies of all time. Screenwriter Robert Towne said, “It’s not much of an exaggeration to say that all contemporary escapist entertainment begins with The 39 Steps.” In 2011, Total Film named the Hitchcock film the second greatest Best Book to Movie Adaptation. The theater is named for her in loving memory by the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the Kaplan family with whom she shared her love, wisdom and joy of life.
