Forest Oaks forges forward New ownership group pumping new life into former PGA Tour stop By DAVID DROSCHAK

hy this time? Why, after eight management firms since the Wyndham Championship left in 2007, is Forest Oaks Country Club ready to become a major player again in the Triad golf market? For starters, there is a new ownership group after nearly three decades. In late August, Guilford Development Group purchased the club from longtime course owner Tadashi Hattori of Tokyo-based Nisshin Corp for $1.2 million. That in itself gives the club a local voice in decisions and more skin in the game. “When the professional tournament moved the interest from the ownership was no longer there. And they were vocal about it, too. They asked for the club to be closed multiple times,” said Geoff Dail of the new management team of Dail Miller Golf LLC. Dail, grew up a wedge away from the Forest Oaks clubhouse and whose parents still live in the neighborhood, has a background in turf and began working at the club as a high school teenager. Meanwhile, Anthony Miller has served as the head golf pro and also a stint as general manager at Forest Oaks since 2005. Once again, they have skin in the game. “We’ve both been through all of these other management companies,” Miller said. “The new ownership group did their homework and had heard about us. It just seemed to make sense that instead of having another company come in and manage it again that we’ve really the boots on the ground, that we’ve been the ones who have actually been managing it and had been through and ins-and-outs of all of them. Geoff and I thought, ‘Why don’t we do this instead of working for someone else?’” So Dail Miller Golf was formed. The new firm also has local courses Meadowlands and Oak Valley as golf agronomic management clients. “I don’t want to stain anyone who has been at Forest Oaks and tried to make it work but I guess the way I would put it is some of these (management) companies that came in just thought that a PGA Tour event was here for 30 years that surely the place can work, and they got in and they found out the struggle of the business,” Miller said. “The members started losing interest when things started deteriorating and from there it got tough,” he added. “To say we were working on a shoestring budget – yeah – and a lot of times it was nothing.” After the sale, a meeting at the outdated clubhouse, in which all existing members and those living in the expansive Forest Oaks community were invited to hear of plans to jump start the club, was in a word, humbling. “We have had monumental support from the community and the golfing industry,” Dail said. “I can’t even think of a single negative comment that I’ve heard from the whole transition. We had a membership meeting the week after the acquisition was closed and about 400 people showed up. We held it in the ball room and it was packed, and I mean packed. There was just raving, positive responses. It was just amazing. Members from decades ago that we didn’t even know were still in the community came.” www.triadgolf.com

The Forest Oaks wall of fame shows the former winners of the historic GGO. Just words that night … but a lot of action since. Winter is coming, but the pool and its surrounding area, which has been closed for two years, will reopen spring 2020. There are new tennis courts and pickleball courts, a new fleet of golf carts, renovated bunkers with new sand, new meeting space … and on and on. “Their vision is to restore the facilities, which really had just been run into the ground,” Miller said of the new owners. “There has been nothing put back into them since 2005. The downstairs, since the last management group was here, basically was mothballed. It was just closed off, the locker rooms, the golf shop, everything was just moved up top. “They have basically revitalized everything. All electrical, HVAC, the snack shop is completely redone, the parking lot repaved, pool drained and cleaned and ready to go, tennis courts completely redone,” he added. And all has occurred over a two-month period. “And there are ongoing investments. It is substantial,” Dail said, including two Full Swing golf simulators that are being installed for some winter fun. Designed by noted architect Ellis Maples, Forest Oaks opened in 1962 to rave reviews. It was already known as one of the best tests in North Carolina when it was rated as a favorite PGA Tour stop by players. As the golf course matured, alterations to the course were necessary, and in 2002 the job of restoring the course was assigned to Davis Love III’s Love Design Group. During this renovation, the fairways were resprigged with TifSport Bermudagrass, a strain that handles the extremes of summer heat and winter wetness better than the old local strains. As a result, the fairways are able to be cut lower and smoother than ever before. The greens were planted with a mix of A4

and A1 bentgrass, which offers a faster and truer surface than the old Penn Links variety. Now, with new equipment in place, Dail said Forest Oaks will be able to complete with any semiprivate course in the Triad and beyond. The course is about an hour’s drive from thriving western Wake County communities such as Apex and Holly Springs. “It’s simple,” Dail said. “We are going to be one of the top golf courses in the state as we were once. We have fantastic greens, and the overall condition of the golf course is greatly improved. We’ve renovated a number of bunkers on the golf course and tightened up the agronomic program.” More than 100 new members have joined since the sale, Miller said, and the golf course itself will remain open for public play. A full family member is $275 per month, with an individual membership $200 and a social membership $100. Any initiation fees will be waived until Jan. 1. “Our membership structure has been simplified,” Miller said. “It was very complex with the last group that was here. There were so many different variations of what was offered it was so hard to explain, you had to have a cheat sheet.” Unlike the last decade, the path forward for Forest Oaks appears clear … and promising. “The best way to describe the past scenario was you had an existing property asset business that had a golden history, and you had an ownership group that was not local that had very little interest in operations, actually no interest in operations at all, so there was tremendous turnover in management companies,” Dail said. “The new owners are former members who have raised families here and been raised here and lived here their entire lives, so they want Forest Oaks Country Club to be what is can be. And it is also a business investment they feel very strongly is going to be successful.” TRIAD GOLF TODAY • HOLIDAY 2020

The Great Debate Is overseeding or turf paint best for winter conditions?

here are a few certainties in life – death, taxes and frost – turning the bermudagrass fairways of North Carolina’s wonderful golf courses a sad shade of tan every winter. When I first came to the Tar Heel state from the Great White North I wondered why “all the grass had died.” Growing up on bentgrass fairways and bluegrass rough, I quickly learned the bermudagrass cycle of dormant and then emerging turf each spring. However, some resorts and private club fairways and tees were indeed green in December and January. Why, I asked? The old terminology of “winter rye” had been applied to these courses for flowing green grass fairways against a backdrop of dormant rough. It was truly eye-popping appeal. But looks can be deceiving, according to golf course superintendents, who over the last decade have embraced the use of colorants, or painting fairways, tees and greens, noting that it can be more beneficial to playing conditions in the long run across central and eastern North Carolina. And less costly. When colorants and pigments first arrived on the golf scene the products put off a blue hue some of the time, creating an unappealing look. But like most technology over the last decade, the painting products from such firms as BASF and Geoponics have been perfected and are now used more widely than rye grasses across the portion of the state that uses bermudagrasses and not bent. “Painting fairways is really an art, literally,” said Bob Farren, Pinehurst’s director of golf course maintenance. “In fact, our new service center manager that we just hired to come in, part of his expertise as a superintendent down on the coast was working with spraying and droplet size to enhance painting. “The key to painting is you want to start with a really good product. And the other is painting an even application just like you would take a roller and paint the walls in your house. It’s not any different making sure you get a good application on. We’ve gotten to where we’re painting later and later into the season because our growing season in the Sandhills just seems to go on longer and longer.” With Pinehurst Resort play tapering off in mid November into December, Farren says he won’t paint the fairways on courses Nos. 2, 4, 8 and 9 until early January, hoping to just apply one more application or spot treatments before the emergence of the bermudagrass in mid March. Farren, who last seeded one of his resort courses in 2009, and others say the cost of painting grass is 7-10 times cheaper than overseeding, however almost all superintendents argue they paint because of better turf conditions come spring, and not necessarily because it’s less expensive. But less than 10 minutes down the road in Southern Pines, another iconic resort -- Pine Continued on page 11 www.triadgolf.com

Great Debate from page 10 Needles and sister course Mid Pines -still overseeds each winter season. “When we get a beautiful day we have all the people in the surrounding area try to come and play our two courses because they are overseeded and look so beautiful,” said longtime Pine Needles superintendent David Fruchte. Fruchte did admit that discussions have been held about painting and what the best option will be for Pine Needles next winter when the USGA returns for the U.S. Women’s Open in the spring of 2022. “Our clientele expects us to overseed with the rye grass,” he said. “We have a lot of customers in the spring time coming from the North and they like to play on green grass, so we try to give it to them that way. “There was one year in the last 30 years that I have been here when we skipped overseeding fairways after we changed the grass over from common bermudagrass to 419,” Fruchte added. “We did overseed the rough but not the fairways and we got a lot of flak for that.” There are arguments that rye grass impedes the bermudagrass from reemerging in the spring, and that more specific and expensive herbicides are needed to control weeds that often get

tracked on to putting surfaces. “The two grasses will compete with the rye grass canopy shading out the bermudagrass, because bermudagrass requires a lot of sunlight,” said Lonnie Poole Golf Club superintendent Brian Green. “We only overseed the driving range tee now, which is common at a lot of golf courses in the Triangle. And the first place you will see poa annua at courses is on the putting green or if people overseed the pars 3 tees those greens will have more poa annua.” When Green first got to Lonnie Poole seven years ago they did overseed the tee boxes, then went to overseeding just the tees on the par 3s. Now they use mats on the pars 3s in the winter months. “I was over in Scotland and played St. Andrews and they had mats on their par 3s, so I thought that if it was good enough for St. Andrews it was good enough for Lonnie Poole,” he said. Lonnie Poole’s 15th fairway was used as a testing ground for overseeding a few years ago. And while that was happening, Green decided to paint the second potion of the fairway to compare and contrast the look. And maybe entice his boss to give painting a try. “With the resort type of courses you can certainly justify the added expense of painting, and possibly overseeding for increased revenues,” Green said. “In

our case and with most public courses, there is no case to justify adding a $16,000 expense in the winter.” The added expense with putting down rye comes from a variety of levels, including adding mowing and labor, water, herbicides and the increasing cost of seed. “It took some guts not to overseed any more,” Farren said. “But this fall we had only one rain event in 8 weeks. If we would have had rye grass out there we would have been watering and watering and watering and it would have been mud balls. And you have cart restrictions too when you’re trying to water your rye grass. The subject never comes up any more.”

There is another benefit to using colorants. “We start mowing bermudagrass here the first week of April in Raleigh, so painting would help speed that process up,” Green said. “It’s just like pavement; black pavement is hotter so with painting you have a darker surface that increases the soil temperatures a little bit.” The negative side of painting? “You do run into situations in February and early March with cart traffic and all those things that it becomes unsightly and you don’t have much tissue to paint on; you are painting on dirt or sand turf, and it doesn’t work as well,” Farren said. An art form, indeed.

Linville’s Legacy

One of state’s most successful instructors has inspired many top golfers

obert Linville knows the highs and lows of competitive golf better than most. An All-American golfer at Guilford College, where he won All-Carolinas Conference recognition four times and All-NAIA District 26 honors three times, Linville moved to Florida following graduation with his sights on the PGA Tour. Battling on the minitours weekly, Linville found himself regularly in contention. He won an event at Spruce Creek, near Daytona Beach, Fla., shooting 65-68 during the weekend, and recorded numerous top10 finishes. While still competing, he and his young family returned to Greensboro in 1984, when Linville was named co-head professional at Forest Oaks Country Club, which at the time was the site of the PGA Tour’s Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic. In 1986, during the final stage of the PGA Tour’s grueling qualifying school, Linville birdied the final hole to make the four-round cut. There, he faced John Inman and David Thore — fellow Triad products — and the trio were tied after 72 holes. “David and I went out and shot 76,” Linville said. “John shot 66 and got his tour card. We just went back to work.” His on-course playing experience is a big part of the reason Linville — who was inducted into the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame this fall — has carved a niche as one of the state’s most successful instructors. Linville went on to coach Greensboro College to its first NCAA title in any sport. Today, he instructs a wide range of golfers around the state including Champions Tour player Mike Goodes, LPGA player Katherine Perry, and decorated amateurs Scott Harvey and Josh Nichols, as well as numerous high school and collegiate golfers. “Robert’s selection to the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame simply identifies him as one of the truly remarkable athletes and coaches in the history of sports in this area,” said Kim Strable, who served 14 TRIAD GOLF TODAY • HOLIDAY 2020

as athletic director at Greensboro College during Linville’s tenure as golf coach, and is now the deputy director of the Greensboro Sports Foundation. Linville, who founded both Precision Golf School in Greensboro and the bourgeoning Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Golf Tour, joined an esteemed class that also included Inman’s older brother, Joe, an All-American at Wake Forest. In 1995, Strable tapped Linville to serve as the head men’s golf coach at Greensboro College. Creating one of the most successful programs in the country, the Pride won the 2000 NCAA Division III championship — defeating perennial powerhouse Methodist College by a single stroke — and finished in the top five for six consecutive seasons, including a pair of runner-up finishes. Linville was named NCAA national coach of the year in 1999 and 2000, and USA South Athletic Conference coach of the year four times. In addition, he coached a USA national collegiate team to victories over Japan in 2000 and 2006. When he was athletic director at Greensboro College, Strable recalls numerous instances following the golf team around the course during the NCAA national championships. Strable got a first-hand view of Linville’s keen sense of knowing when a player needed him — and when they preferred to be left alone. “He expected a lot of his team leaders in particular and (the player’s) body language more times than not told the story,” Strable said. “Robert had a real eye for talent,” added Strable. “He has an easy-going nature coupled with a strong commitment to excellence. This allowed Robert to attract players who wanted the quality teaching as well as the ‘be your best’ type of inspiration.” Linville has earned the praise of his peers as one of the most respected instructors in the Southeast. In 1993, the members of the Carolinas PGA recognized him as the teacher of the year, and in 2008 Golf Digest selected Linville as one of the “Top 10 instructors in North Carolina.”

Three-time Guilford College AllAmerican Chris Haarlow has partnered with Linville at Precision Golf School for the past two decades. Together, they founded the Triad Youth Golf Foundation in 2000. “Robert is humble and soft spoken, but he’s very competitive,” Haarlow said. “He wants to win at what he does. He’s true, he’s honest and he’s gracious. But he does not like to lose. That’s who he is. He takes utmost pride in his teaching and his coaching. You look up the word ‘coach’ in the dictionary and there should be a picture of Robert. He knows when to pat a player on the back and when to tell them they’re not doing what they should do.” Combined, Linville and Haarlow have instructed more than 60 high school state champions, while more than 200 of their students have gone on to play college golf — which

translates to north of $12 million in college scholarships. “We’re more like an old married couple. We probably spend more time together across the (teaching) bays than not,” said Haarlow, who remains one of the most accomplished players in the Carolinas PGA. “Robert’s best students mirror and model themselves after him. You talk to Mike Goodes and he’s going to deflect how good he is. You talk to Scott Harvey and he’s going to deflect how good he is. And that’s what Robert has been to me, too.” Linville also founded the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Tour in 2007, along with director Mike Parker, after realizing that there weren’t enough quality opportunities for junior girls looking to play competitive golf. Now in its second decade of existence, the PKB tour schedule has grown to nearly 100 events from Florida to Pennsylvania, and more than 1,000 yearly participants and counting — while a large number of the former PKB members have gone on to play college golf. “The PKB Girls’ Golf Tour is a huge reason why I’ve been able to reach my dreams of playing professional golf,” said Perry, a Cary native who went on to star at the University of North Carolina. “Robert is an incredible instructor, but he’s also a great person.” Perry started working with Linville about 12 years ago, after she went through a brief slump while competing on the PKB Tour. “He’s been helping me grow as a golfer and a person ever since,” she said. “What I remember most from my first lessons is laughing a lot and having fun trying to improve. Robert has always placed a bigger emphasis on the process of improvement rather than just results. That’s helped me try to focus on each event being an opportunity to improve. I would not have gone to UNC or made it to the LPGA without him.” Perry decided before the 2016 LPGA qualifying school that she would quit golf if she didn’t retain her Tour card. So, she called Linville to caddie for her during the final stage. Years of encouragement, gentle pushing and swing improvements came down to the final hole of qualifying, where Perry had a 15-foot birdie putt to finish inside the top 20 and earn her card. “He read the putt perfectly, I made it, and we knew that I had just made it to the Continued on page 15 www.triadgolf.com

LPGA,” she said. “The excitement of that moment is hard to describe.” Perry has earned four top 20s and one top 10, along with making two U.S. Open appearances in her professional career. She said Linville has been there for nearly all of her most memorable moments. “When Robert is coaching, you know he cares more about the person than the scores they’re producing,” Perry said. “He takes time out of his incredibly busy schedule to come to events, and watch and cheer you on.” Linville, who stays on the cutting edge of golf technology and constantly studies statistics, describes his job as “golf performance coaching.” He estimates spending 75 to 80 days a year on the road, watching various players compete. “Just seeing what I can pick up from patterns and consistencies,” he said. “Seeing what they do, whether it’s body language or specific things that they do in tournaments that they’re not aware of. There’s a correlation between how they do in practice and how they do in competition. It boils down to how you prepare as much as anything.” “To me, everything is about ‘why?”’ he added. “I’m always asking tournament golfers, ‘What’s your why?’ From a coaching standpoint, if I’m going to suggest a change or we need to do something, I need to have my why, of why are we going to do this. Not just because I want it to look a certain way or you hit a specific shot, I want to know why we’re doing this.” While many of his family and friends were on hand for Linville’s most recent Hall of Fame induction, two of his favorite coaches were at the forefront of his thoughts. His coach at Guilford, Jack Jensen, a member of the Golf Coaches’ Association of America Hall of Fame, passed away in 2010. His mother, Ruth Linville, passed away in June 2018 at the age of 101. During her 37 years as a teacher, mostly at Kernersville and East Forsyth High Schools, Ruth coached all sports — “she even coached football one year,” Robert said — but was most noted for her four state championship titles in basketball. “I was fortunate to play for Coach Jensen at Guilford,” Linville said. “He was great with people. He didn’t know anything about golf, but he knew people. I was real young when my mother was coaching. I’m sure what I got from her was patience and keeping people focused on doing the best we can do.”

Seniors Kenzel, Hirtle spark Patriots to second 4-A title in four seasons

t was hard for Jaclyn Kenzel to imagine winning the 4-A womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s high school golf championship two months ago. Kenzel and her family had just returned from a two-week vacation to the Cayman Islands and the future college biomedical engineering major was focused on academics heading into the school year. The Pinecrest High School senior had not picked up a golf club in a few weeks, and quite frankly, her game was a mess. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was really rough for me; I was shooting 41 and 42 for nine holes,â&#x20AC;? a smiling Kenzel said moments after capturing the 4-A individual championship at Pinehurst No. 5 with a pair of 1-under rounds of 71 for a one-shot victory over Megan Morris of Panther Creek. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Coach came to me and pulled me aside and gave me some great words of encouragement and told me I was still able to do it and to pull myself together.â&#x20AC;?

In addition to the words of wisdom from coach Lynne Beechler, Kenzel also got a push from fellow senior Mara Hirtle, who with an average nine-hole score of 33.6 set the all-time conference record â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for both men and women â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this season. Hirtle finished third at the state tournament, two strokes behind Kenzel to spark Pinecrest to its second crown in four seasons. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We joke around about our rivalry, it goes back-and-forth a lot but neither of us thinks weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re better than the other one,â&#x20AC;? Hirtle said. Both golfers were also an integral part of the 2016 title team â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the first year for Beechler, who now has two state titles and two runner-up finishes in her first four seasons leading the Patriots. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t complain,â&#x20AC;? Pinecrest from page 18 and to feel confident and keep a steady pace about them. I always tell them ‘if you make a bogey, Ok let’s move on.’ We want them centered; their core to be solid. We tell them not to dwell on things because there is always a next hole.” “Coach really pushes us a lot,” Hirtle added. “If we aren’t doing so well on say chipping she will stay out there with us and toss the balls back to us until we get it right. She is really supportive. She has been a great coach the last few years. She is not like a mom, she’s like a coach, and she really pushes us to our limits to make sure we’re doing what we need to do. She is definitely stern … in a good way.” Pinecrest took an eight-stroke lead into the final day and ended up finishing five shots better than New Bern. Cardinal Gibbons came in third. Last year’s state champion – Reagan – finished sixth. Becca Connolly of Winston-Salem Reynolds matched Morris for the low round of the tournament with a finalround 69 to finish fourth, three shots off the pace. Hirtle came in 17th as a freshman in 2016, while Kenzel was 28th. Part of their job this season was to teach this year’s

Becca Conley qualifying freshman Kitson O’Neal, who came in 34th, what it takes to be a champion. “Every win is different with different girls and different circumstances and different things you are working on,” Beechler said. “Having two seniors and one freshman is a different dichotomy, so it was our job to teach Kitson what the

stress is like, and these girls are pros at it.” Pinecrest won again at Pinehurst Resort. However, Beechler scoffs at the notion that it’s an advantage for her squad. “It is in our own backyard but you still have to get the ball in the hole,” the coach said. “And it was close there at the end, and the last five holes our girls were solid and they didn’t force things and make

mistakes, and some of their opponents did.” As Hirtle was finishing up her final hole in the final group, Beechler and Kenzel had an emotional exchange near the green and tears began to flow. “It’s still hard to believe because this has all gone by so quickly,” Kenzel said of her four years of successful prep golf in Southern Pines. “We get a lot of children where their parents already love golf and raise their kids around golf, and then they come here to the best place to play golf so we have so many great things coming together to make us successful,” Beechler added. Kenzel, whose final round was sparked by an eagle on her second hole, is interested in attending Florida State, while Hirtle will play golf at the Naval Academy and study engineering. Hirtle received an emotional surprise herself as her father Jared, who had just been deployed to an undisclosed location from Fort Bragg two weeks ago, was able to Goggle Map the course and FaceTime his daughter. “State champs again … pretty cool, huh?” Hirtle said. I would say so.

Oak Grove builds state title program in just three years

By STEVE HUFFMAN fter the first day of the 1-A/2-A golf championship, Oak Grove girls coach Vaughn Black knew his team was capable of playing better, he just

knew it. The Grizzlies hadn’t played terribly on the first day of the tournament, held in late October at Longleaf Golf & Family Club in Southern Pines, and were tied with Mount Pleasant for the top spot. But Black thought his players were better than the 263stroke total they put up that first day. He called them together and issued a challenge. “Go out,” Black said, “and play like you’ve played all year long.” The Grizzlies did just that, bettering their first-round score by 14 shots with a closing-day 249 for a two-day total of 512. Oak Grove walked away with the championship, defeating second-place finisher Mount Pleasant by 19 strokes. Ledford finished third at 553. “They knew they could shoot a lot better,” Black said of his team’s improvement from one day to the next. “They sort of motivated themselves.” The win is the first state title for a team from Oak Grove, a Davidson County school in just its third year of existence. Oak Grove’s Karli Jump showed the most improvement of any Grizzly golfer from round one to round two. Jump, a senior and Oak Grove’s No. 1 golfer, shot an unheard-of-for-her opening round 88. After that score, Jump told her coach and teammates she was capable of shooting 10 strokes better on the second day. That’s exactly what she did, coming back in the tournament’s closing round with a 78.

“Karli played like she’s capable of playing the second day,” Black said. In the final round, Jump’s 78 was the lowest of the Grizzlies’ three scores. As far as individual honors are concerned, she finished in a three-way tie for 11th with Ainslee Conrad of West Davidson and Jala Stamey of Hayesville. Jump said her opening-round 88 was due to a duck hook she somehow developed on the driving range just before teeing off. “I couldn’t hit it straight,” Jump said. “I just couldn’t hit it straight.” So, after the round was through, accompanied by her father, Jerry, Jump spent an hour on the range, figuring out where the hook came from and, more importantly, how to get rid of it. “I knew I could play much better than I played,” she said. The closing-round 78 proved as much. Jump will be attending Catawba College in Salisbury next year, the recipient of a scholarship that rewards both her athletic

and scholastic accomplishments. But Jump was hardly the only Oak Grove player to contribute to the team’s championship. The Grizzlies were the only team at the championship to qualify five players – Jump, Sarah Stewart and Kaitlyn McDonnell as a team, and Emma Maddock and Ashley Longbottom as individuals. All five golfers contributed rounds that counted toward the state championship, an accomplishment of which Black said he’s especially proud. “We were the only team to qualify all five girls from the regional to the state,” he said. “That says something about our program, about the work the girls put into it.” Other than Jump, Longbottom is the only senior on the team. She finished 29thof the 78 players competing in the championship. Maddock, a junior, finished 22nd. Stewart and McDonnell, also juniors, finished 24th and 30th, respectively. Despite being such a new school, Oak Grove has enjoyed remarkable success in girls golf. The team won the Central Carolina 2-A Conference’s regular season and tournament titles each of its first two years of existence. A year ago, the Grizzlies finished third in the state tournament. Jump said that before this season began, Black had all the Grizzlies list five individual goals and five team goals they hoped to accomplish. Winning a state championship was something everyone on the team said they were working for. “We knew we had a really good shot at winning it,” Jump said. Rockingham County comes up short in bid for fifth straight 3-A crown

By EDDIE SOUTHARDS ockingham County was thwarted in its bid to win a fifth straight state title in the women's 3-A tournament by a red-hot Cox Mill team from Concord. The Cougars were consistent shooting 240-241 for a 481 total at Foxfire Resort & Golf Club to finish in second place. Their score was 12 strokes better than in 2018 when they won their fourth title in a row to tie a state record. But Cox Mill, the second-place finisher last year, shot 237-230 for 467 to win by 14 shots. “We've been real fortunate to win four years in a row,” said Rockingham coach Mike Williams. “But your hat has to go off to Cox Mill. They played a great (final) round. I'm happy for them.

“We didn't give it away, they took it. My girls played good and we had a good year. We won the conference, the conference tournament and our regional. We just got beat.” The Cougars trailed Cox Mill by only three shots after the opening round. “After the first round, I told them they had to play the golf course,” Williams said. “Don't get into a match play situation (with Cox Mill). Just play to the best of their ability and we'll see how things come out. I think they did a good job of that. I'm real proud of them. We don't have anything to be ashamed of.” The Cougars were led by seniors Riley Hamilton and Victoria Cook. Hamilton shot 79-76 for 155 to tie for fifth place in the individual standings. Cook shot 80-76 for 156 to finish seventh.

“We're losing two great seniors,” Williams said. “It's going to be a big loss. I feel bad for them. I know they are disappointed. They always treated golf like a business and it helped our program. I'll always be grateful for that.” Both players will play college golf next year – Hamilton at East Carolina and Cook at UNC Greensboro. “They will be an asset to those programs,” Williams said. “I look forward to seeing what they do in the future. But I will miss Riley and Victoria. Riley transferred in last year and helped us win another title, and she played good this year. Victoria got better every year in the state tournament. I appreciate all their hard work. I couldn't ask any more out of them.” Sophomore Elli Flinchum shot 81-89 – 170 for Rockingham's other team score. Sophomore Olivia

Peterson shot 186. “We've got those two sophomores coming back and we have a couple of kids coming from the middle school,” Williams said. “We'll have a very good team next year and, hopefully, make it back to the state tournament again.” Cox Mill was led by junior Elizabeth Lohbauer who shot 73-70 – 143 to win the individual title. Bursting onto the scene at the state tournament was freshman Emily Mathews of Eastern Alamance. She shot 77-70 – 147 to finish second in the state. “I didn't really have any expectations,” she said. “I just wanted to have fun and whatever happens, happens.” Her play this year has impressed her coach, Robbie Wood.
