Reagan senior closes prep career with remarkable round for state title

as it the best six-month span of women’s prep golf in North Carolina history? That fact would be hard to argue after Reagan High School captured its second 4-A state title in 2021, riding a final-round 65 from senior star Morgan Ketchum to tack on yet another record scoring day. Ketchum, who will play college golf at Virginia Tech, started the final round at Pinehurst No. 5 eight shots off the pace, but rallied with booming tee shots and a hot putter to a remarkable bogeyfree 7-under-par closing round and a four-shot victory. There have been some memorable rounds shot on the iconic Pinehurst Resort courses in the North Carolina Sandhills, but Ketchum’s performance ranks high on the list. After an opening-round 75, she birdied six of her first 11 holes, and then after a massive drive on the 18th hole left Ketchum nothing more than a flip wedge to the green, she closed out her high school career with a 12-foot birdie putt that just was icing on the cake to Reagan’s third state title in the last four years. Ketchum from page 6 “Yeah, I think I was trying to press some in the first round that led to a couple of mistakes, and I told myself I wasn’t going to do any of that in the second round,” Ketchum said. Macy Pate, who won the individual title in May as a freshman, tied for second after a final-round 69, while junior Anna Howerton’s two rounds of 75 was good for 11th place and counted towards Reagan’s 7-under closing round and 15-shot victory over Cardinal Gibbons. “This is just fantastic,” head coach Jay Allred said of his team’s record-setting final round. “It has been a great ride. We’ve got some great kids, and they’ve worked hard. All kids work hard, but these girls are phenomenal workers. “And it was so fun watching Morgan Ketchum just blast the ball; I mean she’s hitting it on another planet,” added Allred. “Virginia Tech is getting a great kid and a great player.” The nation’s top-ranked women’s high school team was in an uncharacteristic position after the first round – tied with Cardinal Gibbons at 9-over. Reagan had spent most, if not all, of the season well ahead of its competitors, setting prep scoring record after record, including a 14-under-par round of 57 by Pate along with a team 190 total in the Central Piedmont 4-A Conference championships. Pate also shot an opening-round 75 along with Ketchum as the state championship began, which didn’t necessarily surprise Allred, who started his career 15 years ago as a coach at the Pfafftown school and now has three state crowns in short order. “I didn’t feel we had a good practice (coming into the state championship) and I was a little frustrated over it,” Allred said. “These kids are great, and we have experience, but you’re dealing with teenage, adolescent kids and anything can happen. I wasn’t surprised when we came out and didn’t play well in the first round. Macy and Morgan both wanted to be state champions very badly and I figured that

Eastern Alamance’s Mathews wins second 3-A prep championship By EDDIE SOUTHARDS

mily Mathews shows no signs of slowing down in the women’s high school 3-A state golf championship. The Eastern Alamance junior won her second 3-A title in a span of five months with a victory at Foxfire Resort & Golf outside of Pinehurst. She won the first one in May at nearby Beacon Ridge when the 2020 season was postponed until spring due to COVID-19. “It’s an honor,” Mathews said. “To do it for the second season in a row is really cool. High school golf is such a great experience and the people surrounding me are absolutely amazing.” The wins come on the heels of Mathews finishing as the runner-up in 2019 when she was just a freshman. “I definitely wanted to go out there and win freshman year but I came up a little short,” she said. “So it’s good redemption the last two years.” Mathews shot a 3-under par 69, the only subpar round in the tournament, on the final day at Foxfire to win by an amazing 12 strokes. The 5,266-yard course played short for the long-hitting Mathews, who is the sixth ranked North Carolina junior. She rarely used a driver off the tee, sticking to irons and hybrids to put the ball in position. The tournament was played on the Grey course at Foxfire, featuring more elevation changes than its Red course, which also has been used for the 3-A tournament. “This course can get tricky if you let it,” Mathews said. “There are a couple of holes where you could pull driver but it’s not the smartest play. Laying back is definitely helpful sometimes. My selections off the tee were close to perfect. There wasn’t a scenario where I picked the wrong club.” Mathews shot 75 in the first round to lead by two shots. But she quickly opened up the lead with birdies on 8

the first two holes of the final round. She missed some makeable birdie putts in the middle of the round, but three birdies in a span of four holes on the back nine blew the tournament open. Eastern Alamance coach Robbie Wood said Mathews’ demeanor helps her to be a great player. “If you watch her, you don’t know if she’s playing good or bad,” he said. “She never gets upset with her game. She never panics. She keeps her head about her and I’ve been very fortunate just to be able to coach her.” Mathews admits she does feel pressure but tries to use it to her advantage. “I try to use (pressure) as excitement. I just love being out here and performing under pressure. That’s

what athletes love to do,” she said. Wood said Mathews is willing to put in the time it takes to play consistently. “She enjoys the game and her work ethic is unbelievable,” he said. “She’s the type of person you like to coach because you don’t have to say, ‘we’re going to practice, you better come out here.’ She’s out there before you are.” The 69 in the second round was even more remarkable given the playing conditions. Mathews had to deal with wind that was gusting to nearly 20 mph, and slow play that made the second round last six hours. “The last four holes were pretty strong winds,” she said. “I’ve been fortunate to play in some events where the wind was similar to this so

I kind of learned how to play under these conditions.” Mathews’ calm demeanor helped her deal with the slow play. “I got a couple of chances to sit down on the tee box and just take a moment to myself,” she said. “I used it as a little relax time.” Mathews started the college recruiting process this summer and expects to make a decision soon about her future plans. In the team competition, Union Pines posted the best team score in the final round and finished second in the state. The Vikings shot 292276 for a 568 total to finish just three strokes behind winner Wilson Fike. “This has helped springboard our program,” said third-year coach Brandon Reynolds. “It’s an exciting time for us.” The Vikings qualified a team for the state tournament for the first time in seven years. “We’re in Moore County, the Mecca of golf, and we feel like we have so many resources,” Reynolds said. “The U.S. Kids golf program has been a huge asset, the First Tee and a lot of lessons and clinics at the local golf courses have all helped. “We have a new conference and every single conference match our girls got to play against Pinecrest. They are the cream of the crop in our state competition. Every week we play against them makes us better. We also played in a tournament that included Reagan, the 4-A champion, and the O’Neal School, the private school state champion.” Senior Sara Adams led the Vikings with rounds of 86-85 for a 171 total. “She has only been playing golf for about 18 months,” Reynolds said. “But she is an all-state basketball player and an all-conference tennis player. She has done a phenomenal job leading our girls by getting everyone to buy in to the extra work it takes. “I feel this is going to be a new standard for our school to be here competing,” added Reynolds. “That’s kind of what we are hoping for.” Rockingham County started the final round six shots behind Fike but slipped to third place. Senior Elli Flinchum led the Cougars with 84-82 — 166 to finish sixth in the individual standings.

Saluting Steadman County Club of North Carolina’s first teaching professional has strong military ties By DAVID DROSCHAK

he scorecard from Joe Steadman’s Player Ability Test hangs proudly in his office near the practice facility at the Country Club of North Carolina. The private club’s first teaching professional remembers the day well, logging 36 holes for the first time in his playing days that had included many relaxed rounds with his Fort Bragg buddies. Steadman was sick that day at Keith Hills Golf Club, but like the 13-year Green Beret had done so many times during much more challenging times on three deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, he put his head down and trudged on. He shot an even-par 72 on his first 18 holes, and then closed with a disappointing 80, but was still within range of passing his PAT on his first attempt. Looking back now, it was a remarkable feat for a tactical weapons instructor who was shooting in the mid 80s and had just enrolled in the Professional Golf Management Program at Campbell University as a 30-year-old still enlisted in the Army. “I keep it up there on the wall to show people that I’m teaching now, just to look at those two scores,” Steadman said. “The lesson there is I was sick, so the last thing I was thinking about was golf, I was like ‘get me out of here, I feel awful’ but I went out and shot even par on the first 18, not even realizing it. I turned my score in and the program director said, ‘Nice score, that’s the low round so far.’ Then, as soon as I started thinking about it an 80 showed up. I like to keep it as a reminder of how powerful the mental side of the game is.” Steadman has been through his share of mental challenges that pale in comparison to a PAT golf score. As a sophomore in high school in upstate New York, Steadman watched the Twin Towers crumble, making an indelible impression on the teenager whose father was already in the Air Force. “It seems like every kid is interested in that military stuff, but for me it was 9-11 because I don’t really know how to say this other than it really pissed me off,” Steadman said. “I had a very emotional 10

reaction to that. I was 16 years old, and the towers falling were the first big event in my life to where I was old enough to understand what was going on. It kind of stuck with me over the next few years.” Steadman’s grades weren’t quite good enough to be accepted into West Point, so he enlisted into the Army and after basic training ended up at Fort Bragg as a member of the elite U.S. Army Special Forces and was sent to Germany in 2007. Steadman was then off to Afghanistan for the first of three Middle East deployments. “I was 21 years old and there was a

group of us that we didn’t sleep much because you’re nervous and you don’t know what to expect,” he said. “Even though you are trained, you just don’t know.” Steadman was a weapons sergeant who has a photo of himself at the Kabul Golf Course. “They have two holes of like mud and dirt,” he said. “There are people out there golfing. It was kind of a strange thing.” During down time between his three deployments Steadman would play a few rounds of golf in Germany, but really started focusing on the game when he

returned to North Carolina as a weapons instructor. “I was basically teaching the next group of guys coming through advanced tactics, which I loved every minute of it,” Steadman said. “When you think Special Forces all you think of is what you see in movies, but at the core of all of it is training – that’s the Army’s bread and butter -- we’re constantly training ourselves or teaching others or learning from others. It is kind of ingrained in you to try to be training or instructing in some shape or form at all times. “That was definitely a heavy influence on me, probably more subconsciously than I even realized over the years. So, when all we were doing all day long was teaching these training courses you got good at it, got good at reading people, good at reading personalities and adjusting. Even though teaching in that environment is very different than teaching in a golf environment, a lot of it is very similar, like the concepts of instruction, communication – which I found fascinating as I moved into golf instruction. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh this is the same.’ You have to look at the person, know how they work, know how they learn – and you have to learn all of that without them really knowing it. It’s kind of a cool process to go through.” Golf soon began to consume his life at Fort Bragg. “We had weekends off, so golf became all I could think about,” he said. “It would be Monday morning and I was thinking, ‘Oh gosh, I’ve got to get this week over with because we’re going to X course with X guys and it’s going to be awesome.’ I really just got obsessed with golf like we all tend to do.” At the time, Steadman was also battling some negative fallout from his deployments, making him question whether a longer career in the Army was in the cards. He had fallen 20 feet off a building in full gear in Iraq that caused him some back and neck issues, and he was also struggling mentally with digesting his war experiences. “Some indicators started showing up that it was time to leave (the Army),” Steadman said. “Physically, I was starting to break down. “And when I was deployed I didn’t have a lick of psychological issues, but all of the sudden your brain starts going through all the stuff that you did and it was challenging. Playing golf was really like a lifeboat, it gave me something to focus on. I was at the point of saying, ‘Hey, I need some help, what’s going on Continued on page 11 www.triadgolf.com

For me, the best way I can explain it is your brain tries to process things … hash all these things out. Chemically, you are not ready for it, and you’re saying ‘Holy crap, what’s going on?’ “For me, my wife supported me, and golf was something that I used to channel it. Also, I was fortunate because I had a bunch of guys who loved doing what I loved doing in golf. We had that as a driving factor. I wanted to get better; I wanted to learn about golf. It kind of preoccupied and helped me through that period.” Steadman recalls being invited to play in a golf tournament at Campbell in 2013 and walked into the pro shop to buy a hat. “I was like, ‘Holy crap, you can go to college for golf? That’s kind of cool.” I got a beanie in the golf shop because it was 30 degrees out and went on my way. But a few years later as I started looking at schools, I remembered that. After looking briefly at Methodist’s golf management program, Steadman enrolled at Campbell while still enlisted in the Army. “Behind any person there is an Army of people who helped them get to where they are at, and I can go back and think of my superiors in the military, at the time they were so supportive of me leaving the Army. They would let me leave one day a week and start classes at Campbell just to get a jump start on the process. If they had not done that we wouldn’t be sitting here now,

my whole timeline would have been changed. That spawned a whole chain of events that happened in perfect order. “If you commit to the golf management program, as an 18-year-old it’s cake, everything is laid out for you,” Steadman added. “I started the program when I was 30. There were two of us that old and they called us ‘The Dads.’” Prior to graduation from Campbell, Steadman served internships at Metedeconk National in New Jersey, where he studied under top 100 teacher Terry Rowles. “He was extremely old for a trainee or assistant pro, so I just got on with him as a fellow adult as opposed to a trainee pro,” Rowles said. “He was very curious and he’s just a high achieving guy, so we got along very well. Joe stood out from everybody else even though his technical qualifications in the industry at the time weren’t that far along because he was still studying at college. I saw him as a Green Beret and a competitive human being who asked great questions. I think most people in the golf industry treat him as a golf pro, but if you take him as a father of two who has already retired from a military careertype-of-person then you see him as a different person. Just from being around him and his personality I would imagine he was an unbelievable Green Beret.” Steadman finished his schooling and returned to Campbell, where director of golf Martha Shooter allowed him to start a small golf academy in Buies Creek that soon mushroomed into dozens and dozens of students, some of which included CCNC members.

Terry Rowles (left) and Joe Steadman. One thing lead to another and Steadman found out there was an opening at the prestigious private club in Pinehurst. Without a ton of teaching experience under his belt, he sheepishly approached longtime CCNC director of golf Jeff Dotson about the assistant pro position. Steadman joined the CCNC staff in February 2020 as an assistant pro, and then became the club’s first teaching pro 11 months later. “Over the years, CCNC has had many retired officers among our membership, and our Patriot program for active-duty military members has strengthened our connection to the military,” Dotson said. “Hiring Joe was an easy decision and he’s a great fit with our members and staff. Obviously, we all have great respect for veterans, but everybody loves Joe as he’s really just a down-to-earth good guy.” Steadman’s career path in the golf industry would best be described an unorthodox, but certainly fulfilling to this point. “I would 100 percent do it again,” Steadman said of his military service. “Some of the guys said, ‘You served 13 years, isn’t that just a waste?’ No, not at

all. Every problem I approach now I do it in a manner that the military taught me, whether I realize it or not – the work ethic, the mentality of there is no option that you can’t make that happen --and that’s not something I see that is prevalent in today’s society. It’s going in the opposite direction; people create as many excuses as they can. I would not be the slightest bit successful in the golf industry if it wasn’t for that. If I didn’t have that military mentality I would have gone home and played video games or watched movies instead of staying late and watching Terry’s lessons or coming in early and going with him on trips and helping him set up. “It’s pretty surreal at times,” Steadman added. “Any life change like this is not easy. But the coolest part is there is such a military presence here at CCNC already, so having those guys here made that transition much less stark. And Jeff Dotson is a legend, and the courses here are fantastic and the membership is fantastic. You can be the best teacher in the world but if you don’t have that support you will fail.” And in Steadman’s mind, failing is not an option. TRIAD GOLF TODAY • HOLIDAY 2022

Former Greensboro prep coach takes over Division III program By DAVID DROSCHAK

t’s an understatement to say Chris Jones is accustomed to starting golf programs from scratch. Within the last 15 years alone, Jones has launched Northern Guilford High School’s golf teams (2007) and the university programs at Johnson & Wales (2019) in Charlotte. And in late September, Jones took the head coaching job at Pfeiffer University in rural Stanly County, and will help usher the men’s and women’s golf programs into Division III in the ultra competitive USA South Athletic Conference. Pfeiffer, with a proud golf tradition, was previously a Division II program in the Conference Carolinas before switching in 2017-18 to a conference that includes in-state golf powerhouses Methodist and Greensboro College. Jones, 47, is no stranger to small college golf, having played at Lenoir-

Rhyne and helping host three Division III national championships while in operations for a decade at Grandover Resort in Greensboro. He also was an assistant coach at Belmont Abbey for four seasons. “The competition has gotten really

good in Division III golf,” Jones said. “There are kids who turn down Division I offers to come to a Division III school – for reasons such as academics or playing time. When I was at Belmont Abbey we had a player – Nick Stafford – who was a really great golfer who turned down Division I offers because he wanted to stay home and be a big fish in a small pond. He was All-American three years and won a dozen college tournaments. People like that want to play golf and not sit on the sidelines or be the 12th man on a Division I roster.” Pfeiffer golf graduates and school Hall of Fame members include top 100 teacher Dana Rader and Jason Cox, to name a few. Cox had worked at the Carolinas Golf Association for 17 years prior to taking his new post as director of golf operations at N.C. State, and Rader has moved her award-winning golf academy from Charlotte to Hilton Head, S.C. Both are big names in the golf world. With the Pfeiffer job search lingering

into the fall, Jones laughs that he may be the only coach in the nation to have coached two teams in one season, having taken Johnson & Wales to a tournament before taking over the Falcons and doing the same. “I started the Johnson & Wales program from scratch and my colleagues were super there,” Jones said. “But this was a great opportunity. I wouldn’t have left there if it wasn’t. A lot of people in North Carolina know about Pfeiffer, and not a lot of people knew about Johnson & Wales since it was a young school with a young athletic department. “What attracted me to Pfeiffer is they are in USA South, which is the best Division III golf conference in the country. Just being a part of that, it’s like being the basketball coach at Boston College. Yeah, it’s not the best job in the ACC but you are competing in the best basketball conference in the country.” And even though Misenheimer, N.C., has an official population of less than 1,000, Jones is quick to take potential recruits to its two practice facilities – Old North State Club and Tillery Tradition – both excellent golf courses. “Another thing that attracted me to this job was the facilities,” Jones said. “I Continued on page 15

There is even a Pfeiffer golf bag in the pro shop at Tillery Tradition. The good thing about working here is everybody knows who you are.” The first order of business for Jones is to expand his roster sizes, and start pounding the North Carolina pavement in search of players who may be late bloomers or overlooked by the larger schools. As of now, his best men’s golfer is a graduate student from Florida who also happens to play on the school’s baseball team. “In my first six weeks here I’ve had more people reach out to me via questionnaires or emails than I did probably my whole year-and-a-half at Johnson & Wales,” Jones said. “People know Pfeiffer, and then coaching in high school for as long as I did, those guys know what I want. “I know when Mack Brown first coached football at North Carolina he ruled the state of North Carolina because he knew all the high school coaches. Lyerly scores back-to-back titles for UNCG

ick Lyerly first made his mark as one of the state’s best golfers when he became the youngest ever-winner of the 2016 North Carolina Amateur. He hadn’t begun his senior year at East Rowan High School at the time. Lyerly has been on a steady rise ever since and now as a graduate student at UNCG he’s off to a sensational final collegiate season. He won consecutive tournaments in October with a performance that earned a finalist nomination for Ben Hogan Golfer of the Month honors. In four fall tournaments, he averaged 68.7 per round with all but one of 12 rounds in red numbers. He capped off the campaign with a 14-under-par blitz that won the Grandover Collegiate by two shots for his sixth career title. “Nick had another great event and is truly one of the top amateurs in the world,” said UNCG coach Terrance Stewart. “He’s only getting better and that is scary.” He led wire-to-wire by shooting 66-6670 on Grandover’s East Course. “It’s always nice to get a win on your home course,” Lyerly said. “I practice out here all the time, so I feel confident knowing the course. Knowing all the hard work that we put out here as a team and it was nice to see it pay off.” The Spartans finished third in the 15-team event, nine shots off the pace of Davidson. One week earlier, Lyerly led UNCG to a second-place finish behind N.C. State in the 16-team Wolfpack Intercollegiate at Lonnie Poole Golf Course. The Spartans ended five shots off the pace of the host Wolfpack, who surged from behind with a final-round 282. Lyerly opened with a career-best 65 and followed with 71-70 to claim the individual title by two shots over East Carolina’s A.J. Beechler. The 65 was his 25th round in the 60s in his collegiate career that has included 36 tournaments and 106 rounds. At the conclusion of the fall season, Lyerly is ranked 28th in the country according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. Aces coming in bunches for Asheboro woman By STEVE WILLIAMS

alk about adding some icing to the birthday cake. Linda Poggenpohl of Asheboro recorded her sixth career hole-in-one on her 60th birthday while playing in the Robert Trent Jones Couples Classic in Alabama on Nov. 7. But that feat really just topped off what she had already accomplished this fall. The 10-handicapper – just a little over a month earlier – made two aces in a three-day span at two different courses in the Triad area. On Sept. 30, on home turf at Pinewood Country Club, Poggenpohl holed out her 9-iron shot on the 100-yard 17th hole. It was her second ace on that hole and the fourth in her 45 years of playing golf. Mike Shoulberg, Rick Crawford and Brice Hodge were in the foursome. Two days later she was playing at Colonial Country Club when she made her fifth career ace. nessed that hole-in-one. The latest ace in Alabama was especially sweet, not just because it was on her birthday, but it came in the final round of a tournament, helping her and husband Mike Shoulberg get to 4-under for the day and climb from 12th place to third on the first flight leaderboard. The perfect shot came on Grand National Links Course’s 120-yard 16th hole with a 9-iron. Poggenpohl recorded her first hole-inone in 2005 in Rhode Island. She was playing in a company tournament and it came on her first swing of the day. She waited 12 years before making her second while playing at Currituck Country Club on the North Carolina Outer Banks. The wait for number three was eight years as she aced Pinewood’s 17th on Memorial Day weekend in 2020.
