n some ways, J.R. Smith’s life has come full circle. Once a teenager in a man’s world as a high school player drafted in the NBA first round, the two-time world champion now finds himself as a 30-something guy, surrounded by a group of much younger, college teammates. Smith, 36, who played 16 seasons in the NBA and won championships in 2016 and 2020 alongside LeBron James, has retired from hoops and has enrolled at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, joining the golf team as a walk-on. “I looked up to guys like Baron Davis, Darrell Armstrong, David Wesley, P.J. Brown and Rodney Rogers when I first started in the NBA in 2004,” Smith said. “It feels good being the older guy out here. You get to still learn so much because these young guys have grown up doing this (playing golf) all their lives. I get to learn a different type of work ethic from them, and what their aspirations and goals are, and how I can help to try to make them better men moving forward.” Smith’s net worth is reportedly $35 million, but he decided to enroll in college under the advice

www.triadgolf.com

of former NBA players Ray Allen and Chris Paul, both of whom played college basketball. Once deciding on getting an education at an historically black university and selecting the Aggies, Smith began to ponder the idea of playing college golf. Paul’s bother, C.J. Paul, called North Carolina A&T golf coach Richard Watkins to float the idea of Smith walking on to his program, which was launched just five years ago. “I didn’t know who C.J. was talking about at the time, but I kind of gave him my position on walk-ons,” Watkins said of the telephone conversation. “At my program, a brand new program that is not very good, at an institution that is not known for golf, people want to come and walk on all the time that hadn’t been recruited by anybody. To me, if somebody else didn’t want you at their program why do I particularly want you on mine?” However, an impromptu foursome soon thereafter that involved Watkins, his assistant coach, the school’s compliance officer and Smith, took place at Deep Springs in Stoneville. The wheels then began to see if Smith would be eligible under NCAA rules. He was, and Smith began a serious golf practice regiment at Bryan Park and Forest Oaks in order to attempt to qualify for the team’s four fall tournaments. “I don’t think he has missed a day playing or practicing since he’s been here,” Watkins said. Smith is no gimmick. He can drive the ball in excess of 300 yards and has a passion to excel in a sport he has never really played competitively. “J.R. was always pretty good, now he just has to learn how to play golf. That’s it,” Watkins said. “He has to understand and get used to and learn things in qualifying for tournaments. There are no gimmies … no pickups. And there is one other hurdle Watkins believes Smith will need to address – walking 18 holes. Golf carts are not permitted in college golf competition. “Come on, the man is worth $35 million, he’s

never walked a round of golf in his life,” Watkins said laughing. Anthony Ford, a sophomore on the team from Atlanta, at first believed a friend was playing a joke on him about Smith joining the program. “I thought somebody was making it up, but when I got here there he was,” Ford said of the slender 6-foot-6 Smith. “It’s cool to see how much work he’s willing to put in and how much he is expecting out of himself and the team. It’s going to be a blast.” Smith, who wears a size 15 golf shoe, really doesn’t know what his expectations should be during the infancy of his competitive golf career and college educational experience. He is anxious to find out, though. “I feel like you can always get smarter and gain some perspective of life and for me I’ve been a professional athlete, made tons of money, so I don’t really need the typical experience,” Smith said. “At a certain point, at the end of the day, you still want to challenge yourself, get smarter, try to educate yourself on as many fronts as possible. “As far as golf, it’s much more mental for me,” Smith added. “In basketball, after a while your athletic ability can take over and you can make a different impact on a game. Playing golf, it’s more cerebral and making putts and leaving bad shots behind you and trying to focus on the next shot. In that aspect it’s a lot like basketball because as a shooter for me it’s always about the next shot – whether you made one or missed one – and setting yourself up to be in better position to make the next shot.” Smith said he picked up the game about 12 years ago when he was riding around on a cart at a celebrity event with NBA legend Moses Malone. The foursome kept goading Smith to tee one up. “I ended up swinging and hitting the ball 300 yards down the middle of the fairway and fell in love,” Smith said. “Later that day, I bought three sets of clubs. After that I’ve been hooked.” TRIAD GOLF TODAY • FALL 2021

Rising from the Dead Kris Spence resurrecting Woodlake Country Club By David Droschak

K

ris Spence will stop you in your tracks if you try to label his recent work at Woodlake Country Club as an impending renovation or restoration. The Greensboro-based golf course architect has a much more fitting description of the project. “This is a resurrection from the dead, this thing was gone,” Spence said of the 36-hole development outside of Vass, which is about 10 miles north of the golfing paradise of Pinehurst. Spence and his crew started working here in August, in the sweltering heat of the North Carolina Sandhills, toiling hours-upon-hours bush hogging the fairways and surrounding rough just to get a peek at what was left of the 1971 Ellis Maples course that had been mothballed for several years. Spence described the golf course as “a jungle” in which there were small pines growing out of bunkers and a “wildlife habitat” that had taken the land back over to the tune of 4-5 feet high native species and trees in most of the fairways and greens. Spence estimates his team spent two full weeks, 40 hours a week, bush hogging the course to begin to access what was ahead of them. “I joke that we’re going to leave those little pine trees to add a bit of difficulty to these bunkers,” Spence said. “But it really is interesting to see how nature tries to take things back over. It’s really amazing.” To Spence’s amazement, once cut down, the fairways began to see Bermuda grass re-emerging. “I know my first thought was we were going to have to re-sprig half of these golf holes, that there was no way the Bermuda had survived under this kind of vegetation for that long,” Spence said. “We bush hogged it and brought the sun down to the surface of the fairway, but the weed pressure was still intense. We sprayed those weeds and knocked them way back, we then had a secondary spray and fertilized it, and I mean the Bermuda came back with a vengeance. That was a very pleasant surprise. Now, we don’t have to plant 40-50 acres, which would have cost more than $100,000.” Woodlake was a dream location for many from the retired military community of nearby Fort Bragg and other seniors with picturesque arched wooden bridges dotting the landscape filled with shimmering lakes and wetlands, accompanied by an ever-changing seasonal natural landscape. But mismanagement and numerous lawsuits over the years on various fronts left this area without its two golf courses

www.triadgolf.com

(there is also a Palmer layout) and other amenities. In short, Woodlake had turned into a ghost town. The pro shop looks like the scene out of a horror movie, where folks run for cover and leave everything behind. Even though there hasn’t been a round of golf played at Woodlake in several years, scorecards remain on the counter, range balls are scattered about and the magazine Kingdom is delivered on a regular basis. “There is no question there is a really strong feel-good element to this,” Spence said of the club’s comeback. “You see all the homeowners and property owners and old members that bought out here -- that was a key part of their life -- and to see it just go away must have been heartbreaking. I don’t know if they ever lost hope, but I would suspect they did. It’s great to be a part of their excitement. They are so happy to see us on site. You know, a lot of clubs aren’t that excited when you close down their country club. In this case, they are thrilled to death to be able to see a fairway re-emerging, bunkers getting cleaned up, greens being resurfaced.” Atlantic National Capital – along with Spence – can be viewed as the club’s savior. ANC purchased the Woodlake properties earlier this year in a foreclosure auction for $3.5 million. ANC is a familyowned investment company headed by Keith Allison and his three daughters, one of which – Cara Spencer – was placed in charge of the golf course project management piece. Spencer, who had no previous golf

knowledge, admits she found Spence by “luck” after a wide search for contractors to begin work on the golf piece of the project. “Unfortunately, Woodlake has a reputation from the past that makes it hard to get vendors to come and perform work on projects. No one wanted to be associated with Woodlake, and then the size of the job went over and beyond most of their capabilities,” Spencer recalled of the beginning stages of the project. “I expanded my search online, to Pinehurst and Raleigh with no luck, and then I talked to an irrigation firm in Charlotte who recommended Kris.” Spencer reached out to Spence via telephone, and he agreed to come down and take a look. “We were riding around in a golf cart and I knew nothing about golf, and I was going on a golf cart path and hitting into all these trees and he said ‘scoot over, let me drive.’ It was so funny,” Spencer said. “His wealth of knowledge and his ability to work within the confines of our budget made Kris the right person to take our vision and just run with it. I’m glad he’s here to help us.” Spence has executed some of the state’s best golf course architectural work over the last decade, from renovations at Sedgefield to Jefferson Landing to the Country Club of North Carolina. And he has worked on about 10 Maples courses over the years. “People would always speak very highly of Woodlake and I can see why,” Spence said. “It was probably never really

taken care of the way it should have been, but in my opinion -- and I’ve seen a lot of Ellis’ work -- this is one of his very best golf courses. The main thing is the undulation of the property and the way he used it. The quality of the green surfaces are just really, really good; they are very diverse, just some of the concepts he used caught my eye. I was mowing the greens and I had a guy following me around with roundup and trying to kill them and green-after-green-after-green Ellis was definitely on point, trying to create a really dynamic, championship set of greens. They work up and they have these little quadrants -- high quadrants, low quadrants -- that just break off. Some really neat stuff.” Spencer says the Palmer course may be used for various real estate needs along with Spence designing a unique par-3 course, similar to what Pinehurst Resort has in The Cradle. “I don’t know what that is going to look like just yet, but it’s an interesting dynamic to what we’re doing, and is going to bring a lot of value to Woodlake,” Spencer said. Spence estimates the Maples course would likely reopen around Labor Day 2022. “My excitement level for this project is really high,” Spence said. “It’s exciting to bring it back to life. It’s starting to look like a golf course again. I would certainly expect it to host state and regional type of events, and it’s capable of hosting just about anything -- it’s that good of a golf course.” TRIAD GOLF TODAY • FALL 2021

arold Varner III has come close but has yet to win on the PGA Tour. He finished second this past season at the RBC Heritage and played in the final pairing at the 2019 PGA Championship before carding a disappointing 81. Varner, now 31, no longer dwells on the close calls, or pays much attention to the questions about when he’ll break through on Tour. The former East Carolina University star has played professional golf for a decade now, and he and his wife are expecting their first child in early October. And his HV3 Foundation, aimed at providing affordable sports access to today’s youth, is starting to gain momentum in the charity world. That, more than winning, brings a

smile to the face of one of the game’s most likeable and approachable players. “Winning (on Tour) is the most important thing because if I win more people are going to know about the foundation and that means more money, and it means I’m going to be able to give more money,” Varner said during a recent youth golfing clinic at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst. “It’s a trickle down affect. If I focus on playing good golf everything else will take care of itself. “I have been around two winners that have won a lot – MJ and Tiger – and I find it weird they don’t talk about winning,” added Varner of his friends, mega superstars Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. “Maybe I should just focus on getting better. They are big about focusing on the present, fundamentals.” Varner is a natural around kids. Continued on page 15 www.triadgolf.com

Varner from page 14 He engages them with high-fives, jokes around, and has a casual teaching approach with the hopes they fall in love with the game of golf as he did 20 years ago as a kid at Gastonia Municipal. The goal of the HV3 Foundation is to fund close to 50,000 rounds of golf for juniors across North Carolina and South Carolina, as well as helping provide financial assistance for equipment, after school programs, instruction, camps, and various other avenues. “Sure, it takes a lot of money, but there is a lot of money to be had and I’m willing to put my neck out there for those kids because most of them can’t do it right now,” Varner said of the affordability of sports participation in general, not just golf. “There is a lot of opportunity and I want to be a part of it. I want to change kid’s lives because one day they are going to be taking care of me. “I remember a lot when I was a junior golfer; I learned how to respect people; I learned how to carry myself,” he added. “I saw this little kid the other day and I had flashbacks just talking to him because one little thing you do for a kid can go a long way. The biggest thing for me (with the kids) is you’re going to learn a lot by just being on the golf course.” Varner says the HV3 Foundation has been a journey and huge learning experience that mirrors his PGA Tour career. “I’ve had some wonderful people around me to

help raise money, but more so to give me advice on how to raise money the right way so that every year we’re not trying to figure out if we have enough money to help,” Varner said. “For awhile there we

were just having tournaments and basically whatever we made we gave back. Now, it’s like way over my head, but I know what (the charity) is supposed to do and I’m super excited to give kids a chance to play golf. The guys I play golf with now want to help even more -- not just play golf with me. Whenever golf is out of the picture and people still want to help that’s when you know you’re winning. If the only thing you want to be a part of is me playing golf then 30 years from now it’s not going to matter.” At 5-foot-9, Varner is small in stature, but is one of 61 PGA Tour players who averaged at least 300 yards off the tee last season. He is also one of a just a handful of black golfers playing in the professional ranks. Varner shrugs off the subject when asked. “I never think about my race waking up,” Varner said. “But I do know how difficult it has been to get on the PGA Tour. You figure out how hard it is when the people your age aren’t playing competitive golf any more. “Ten years from now if all you can remember is how I played then I didn’t do a good job. It’s an awesome ride and I still love playing golf. I always thought I would be able to move in silence; if I wanted to help someone I just help them because it’s the right thing to do. But it just doesn’t work that way all the time. You need to promote things (like my charity) that you want to do in life.” To help Varner’s HV3 Foundation charity log on to https://hv3foundation.org/get-involved/.

Double eagle highlights Clark’s best collegiate finish By STEVE WILLIAMS

G

arrett Clark’s climb up the leaderboard in the final round of the VCU Shootout got a huge boost with a magnificent 3-iron early in the round. Clark, a sophomore from Burlington playing for the University of Richmond, holed out a 3-iron shot from 220 yards for a double eagle on the 524-yard, par-5 fifth hole on the Country Club of Virginia’s Tuckahoe Creek Course on Sept. 14. He hit his driver on the dogleg left hole over a lake and then navigated the water again with the second shot that landed eight feet short of the pin and rolled in. It highlighted a 6-under-par 66 that gave Clark a tie for third among 72 players, marking his best collegiate finish. It was Clark’s first albatross to go along with two holes-in-one, both scored during his junior golf days. His first came on home turf at Alamance Country Club when he was 12 years old and his second was accomplished in a tournament at Grandover Resort. Clark now

North Carolina players key Richmond’s fast start

TRIAD COLLEGIATE CHECKLIST

By STEVE WILLIAMS

S

enior Michael Childress of Salisbury has been a mainstay for the University of Richmond ever since he arrived in 2018. Now, another Triad area player, Garrett Clark of Burlington, is making his name known as a sophomore. The two Carolinians posted top10 finishes in the season-opening VCU Shootout to lead the Spiders to their first tournament title since the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship. Clark, who played his high school golf at Burlington Williams, tied for third in the 72-player field while Childress tied for seventh. Clark’s final-round 66 matched the fourth best individual round in program history. His scorecard featured five birdies and a double eagle, accomplished with a 220-yard 3-iron on the par-5 fifth hole. “I bookended that with birdies and played pretty good golf after that but I got a big boost from that little stretch,” Clark said. He ended at 10-under-par 210, the second best 54-hole score in the Richmond record books. Childress’ 6-under 210 was his career best. The Spiders ended one shot ahead of tournament host VCU. “This is my fourth year now and it kind of feels like we’ve been on the other side of this a lot – one shot here or there and then we watch and think what could have been,” Childress said. “So to really have it come down to one shot and have this group of guys do as well as they did when it matters is so awesome.” Richmond followed up the victory at VCU a week later with an eighth-place finish at the 16-team River Run Collegiate. Clark, again, was the team leader as he tied for ninth in the 84-player field. Opening the season with a pair of top-10s individual finishes hadn’t been done at Richmond since 2013.

Going Low Two other Triad area players posted career rounds in the opening month of the season. Mallory Fobes of East Bend fired a second-round 66 in the William & Mary Fall Invitational, and Kalya Smith of Burlington closed with a 67 in the Cougar Classic. www.triadgolf.com

Fobes’ 66 was a single-round school record at UNC Wilmington. Her 34-32 card featured eagles on the par-5 third hole and the par-4 18th. She also had four birdies to offset a pair of bogeys. Smith’s unblemished card included five birdies and the 67 was three shots better than her previous best at North Carolina. It

helped her to a tie for 15th among 93 players, marking the third top-20 finish of her career. New coach at Pfeiffer Greensboro native Chris Jones is the new head coach at Pfeiffer University. Jones, a former standout player at Greensboro Page and Lenior-Rhyne, had

spent the last two years getting the golf program started at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte. He began his coaching career at Northern Guilford High School before moving into the college ranks as an assistant at Belmont Abbey. Jones will direct both the men’s and women’s teams at Pfeiffer.
