SEVEN REAL LIVING PITTMAN PROPERTIES AGENTS RECEIVE PLATINUM SERVICE RECOGNITION Seven Real Living Pittman Properties agents have again been granted the highest level of service achievement in the real estate industry. Beth Luck, Deborah Nance, Donna McIntyre, Johnnie Bright, Kathy McIntyre, Marianne Durham and Aaron Reel were recently designated as Quality Service Certified Platinum. The award is in recognition of earning 100 percent client service satisfaction in 2018 as measured by Leading Research Corporation (LRC). A Quality Service Certified (QSC) award status is the only recognition in the real estate industry based on independently validated customer satisfaction survey results. After the conclusion of real estate transactions, clients of QSC agents receive a survey asking them to rate the agent on various aspects of the service process. The surveys are administered and the results are received and compiled by LRC. For more information, visit homesbypittman.com.

HERE’S A FEW TIPS FROM LOGAN’S GARDEN SHOP (RALEIGH) & GARDEN SUPPLY COMPANY (CARY) FOR NEW HOMEOWNERS THAT ARE CONSIDERING NEW LANDSCAPE OR GARDENING PROJECTS. Check for drainage issues!
Is water pooling around the home’s foundation or anywhere in the yard? Is run-off from neighboring sites causing erosion or other damage to your property? Does water exiting downspouts freely move away from the house?
Are there mature trees on the property?
If so, check them for dead or damaged limbs that may fall on the house or vehicles parked in the driveway.
Are there easements on the property?
Having easements may not allow for a fence to be built or may restrict plant choices in those areas.
Are there lots of large, overgrown shrubs or long lengths of hedges?
This could indicate the level of maintenance needed or be a sign of plants that should be replaced.

rom the turrets to the balconies and the private, manicured grounds, European-style homes can be found hidden throughout the Triangle landscape. Crafted with intentional detail and oozing with warmth and character, these luxury estates beckon with their worldly appeal. “European-inspired homes remain timeless,” says Reed Jackson with Ivester Jackson Distinctive Properties. “From English cottage to French country, there will always be an audience for these homes— particularly with the number of Americans who are now traveling to Europe fairly frequently.” Upon returning from their travels, Jackson says they quickly fall in love with the charm and statementmaking architecture of these elegant styles, which may also include touches of Spanish and Mediterranean influences. “Today’s buyers are drawn to that sense of classic design,” he says. “They love the use of natural materials like the exposed beams, stone and masonry, which can add warmth to interior spaces. I find that buyers who prefer homes with character are especially attracted to European-style homes.” Deb White with Helen Adams
Realty says today’s buyers are also interested in the uniqueness of European design. “Most of these homes are custom designed, so you truly have a one-of-a-kind home,” she says. “The architecture really makes them a standout. From the soaring ceilings to the intricate millwork—and I just love the castlelike turrets—these homes are so interesting. Sometimes you’ll even find hidden rooms and secret doors. No two are alike.” While the Old World appeal of these estates delights, White says it’s still important to keep up with the times. “There’s definitely a market for these homes as long as the interior design doesn’t feel old,” she says. “Today’s builders have done a great job balancing what buyers are looking for in a European-designed home by keeping the interior light, bright and open while maintaining the European-influenced charm and architectural details—all without feeling too modern.” Adding charm throughout the Triangle, these stunning estates are often found within Raleigh’s prestigious beltline area, offering amazing proximity to downtown and great school systems. “Some

of the oldest neighborhoods such as Oakwood, Cameron Park, Hayes Barton and many others have distinctive properties that appeal to the luxury consumer,” says Susan Dahlin Bashford with Hodge & Kittrell Sotheby’s International Realty. “In addition to the beltline, there are many other areas around Raleigh with large plots of land that harbor estate properties. These neighborhoods such as Devon and Bayleaf Farm are newer in age and are ideal for the luxury buyer looking for tremendous privacy.” Offering worldly elegance with exquisite handcrafted doors, ironwork, light fixtures and more brought in from around the globe, Bashford says there will always be a market for luxury European-inspired homes. “Many luxury homeowners often bring furniture and design pieces from their travels to be used in the construction of their homes,” she says. “They have these homes custom built so every detail is truly specific and intentional. I think there will always be a market for these timeless homes. And, lucky for us, we have a large range of luxury custom builders and architects giving the buyer many choices.”

t’s official. Bare walls are out. In fact, for most of us, we could benefit by replacing most of what is currently hanging on our walls. I’m not talking about original art, of course. Just those prints you have had for decades—especially faded prints, yellowed mats and

plastic frames. Art is created to inspire us, make us think, dream of our favorite places. If your artwork isn’t doing that, or you are staring at bare walls, it’s time to go art shopping. Visit your local art galleries.

I love stopping into Anne Neilson’s gallery in Charlotte’s SouthPark. Take the time to chat about art. Educate yourself. It may not be in your budget to buy today, but it could be someday. Shopping online for most home décor items can be a bit tricky. Colors don’t always look the same, you can’t tell if a chair will be comfortable or if the fabric will feel cheap. But the best way to shop for art is online, even for originals. The art world went digital long before the rest of the home décor industry. They have always been print leaders. You have a huge selection from which to choose—and you can control
the size, whether it is printed on paper or canvas, and how it’s framed. Choose what you like and what goes with your home’s style. It’s nice if the colors and character blend with your décor, but don’t let that spearhead your decisions. There are some trends today that might help steer you in the right direction. Abstract pieces are very in. An abstract piece featuring soft, neutral tones will help bring an elegant touch to your room. An abstract floral can provide a great pop of much needed color. Consider incorporating statement art. Graphic, oversized art in a home, painting or photography is the best

you—bring nature in via the artwork you select. Online, you will find hundreds of pieces featuring single palm leaves or exotic florals. Soften your walls with one of today’s landscapes. Travel art is very hip this season. Jetsetter by RFA Decor is an amazing muse. Who wouldn’t want to dress like her or be her travel companion heading off on a great adventure? Remember, art should inspire you to dream. When framing art, remember mixed metallic finishes are in. The neutral of
the metallic world is black. It grounds and connects all the others together. Metallic frames and artwork are great options for incorporating this trend into your home. So, say goodbye to all your bare walls and dated artwork. Give yourself permission to stroll the galleries and invest in art that speaks to you. Go online and find just the right artwork for your home. I guarantee it will be the best décor move you’ll make this year.

Snake business
Beware of the slithering creatures as you venture back into warm-weather yard work by Allen Norwood
W
hen we were working in the yard on a sunny afternoon, my wife flipped over a rock to discover a little brown snake with a pink belly. She didn’t yelp or anything. She just let me know that she’d found a snake, then waited for it to slither out of the way so she could get back to work. I wasn’t really surprised she’d found one because, well, I probably put it there. When I was moving wood chips last year, I brought at least two of the little rascals over from the mulch pile next door. I saw them on the pitchfork when I loaded the wheelbarrow, and saw them again when I spread the load. This is just a seasonal reminder, if you’re tackling the spring yard cleanup as we are, to be careful when you turn over stones and logs, or rake away a winter’s worth of leaves. Not all snakes are as friendly as our little wigglers. Steven Capobianco, an extension
14R
agent with the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service in Mecklenburg County, says he gets calls about snakes when spring arrives. He hasn’t received one yet this year—mine was the first—but he knows they’re coming. “I expect to get some in the next couple of weeks as it gets warmer.” While we were chatting, Capobianco offered to set up a quick link to a wide array of Extension Service information about North Carolina snakes. You’ll find it here: go.ncsu.edu/snakes. Check it out. Maybe it will save you a call. At least you can become better informed—and less likely to kill snakes that pose no threat. There are about 37 species of snakes in North Carolina, according to the Extension Service, but most aren’t poisonous. And all the potentially dangerous ones aren’t found everywhere across the state. “In Charlotte, two that are dangerous
are the copperhead and timber rattler,” Capobianco says. “In Raleigh, add the water moccasin.” Here’s one thing about snakes, though: They don’t always pay attention to official snake maps. I’ve been told over the years that there never has been a confirmed sighting of a cottonmouth moccasin in Mecklenburg, that their range is east of Charlotte. Quoting experts, I’ve even written that. Capobianco has heard that, too—and thinks he might have found an immature cottonmouth on a neighbor’s property. I’ve never seen a copperhead at our current house—but that’s no guarantee I won’t kick one up on my next visit to the mulch pile. I know they’re around. “They hide in wood mulch piles and pine (needle) bales,” Capobianco says. “There’s not much you can do to repel them. It’s best not to attract them.” In other words, clean up those places where they can hide—but be careful

when you do it. There are lots of black snakes around our house. I wrote about one that lounged on a dogwood limb over my head while I worked on a shed in our backyard. I helped neighbors shoo a black snake out of their garage. I don’t think it was the same one, but they could have been cousins. They both wandered off. No reason to go after a black snake with a hoe. There’s one final reason you shouldn’t randomly kill snakes. “Most of the time when there are bites, it’s from adults poking at them,” Capobianco says. “Or from kids or dogs who don’t know better.” So, if you try to kill a snake that you don’t really need to approach, you’re putting yourself at more risk.
