HERE’S A FEW TIPS FROM LOGAN’S GARDEN SHOP (RALEIGH) & GARDEN SUPPLY COMPANY (CARY) FOR NEW HOMEOWNERS THAT ARE CONSIDERING NEW LANDSCAPE OR GARDENING PROJECTS. Check for drainage issues!

Is water pooling around the home’s foundation or anywhere in the yard? Is run-off from neighboring sites causing erosion or other damage to your property? Does water exiting downspouts freely move away from the house?

Are there mature trees on the property?

If so, check them for dead or damaged limbs that may fall on the house or vehicles parked in the driveway.

Are there easements on the property?

Having easements may not allow for a fence to be built or may restrict plant choices in those areas.

Are there lots of large, overgrown shrubs or long lengths of hedges?

This could indicate the level of maintenance needed or be a sign of plants that should be replaced.

T

hose looking to live close to Raleigh without the hustle and bustle of North Carolina’s capital city are finding the neighboring towns of Knightdale and Wendell an ideal choice. Located to Raleigh’s east and within Wake County, both areas offer convenience and affordability. Easy access to I-440 and I-540 allow for a relatively short commute to RTP or downtown Raleigh, and potential buyers can find many home options for under $250,000. Homebuyers will find everything from townhomes to houses on several acres, with the majority of available residences being newlyconstructed, single-family homes. “Both towns offer a good selection of properties for the first-time homebuyer,” says Linda Wells, a broker with Pointe Realty Group. Wells points out that the availability of land in these areas has fueled their steady growth in recent years. “Large amounts of land have provided the space for new communities to be built, like the popular Knightdale Station, which includes multiple styles of homes, walking trails, athletic parks and a YMCA. Similarly, the Wendell Falls mixeduse community offers something for many different lifestyles,” Wells says. Both of these planned communities are adjacent to large parks, giving residents plenty of green space

and outdoor activities to enjoy. Ashley Quinn with Premier Agents Network of Fonville Morisey Realty reports that the market in the area is booming. “Because of the affordability and fantastic new construction options, most listings are experiencing record low ‘days on market,’ and it’s not uncommon for a home to have multiple offers on the first day,” Quinn says. She adds, “Homes in Wendell are a great long-term investment—when I-540 is complete, this area will be open to an entirely different set of commuters.” Despite their expansion, both towns have retained their sense of community. Annual events, like a Fourth of July celebration featuring live music, food trucks and fireworks, and a Christmas Parade highlighted by floats from local schools and businesses, bring neighbors and families together and help give the area its small-town charm. Commercial growth is more evident in Knightdale than in Wendell, as the need for convenient local shopping has resulted in the emergence of big box stores. “Wendell has preserved a more traditional feel around downtown despite all the growth it’s experiencing. Hopefully, both towns will be able to keep their character, history and charm as they continue to evolve,” Wells says.

SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION . THE NEWS & OBSERVER . SUNDAY, MARCH 17, 2019

The two towns boast a selection of unique independent shops and businesses, loved by locals and outof-towners alike. Oak City Brewing Company in downtown Knightdale is family- and dog-friendly, and serves beers from across the state and around the world. Their beer garden overlooks Knightdale Station Park, and is a great place to relax on a sunny afternoon. A short stroll away you’ll find Lassiter Distilling Company, where you can take a tour to see how they make their rum and sample their award-winning spirits. Be sure to stop into The Mercantile next door, a shop selling unique vintage, antique and handmade items for the home. To get a taste of historic downtown Wendell, visit Aubrey’s & Peedie’s Grill, a fixture in the community since 1979, serving homecooked meals for breakfast and lunch. To juxtapose the old with the new, just cross the street to the cozy 41 North Coffee Co., owned by an NC State University alum. A visit to the Wendell General Store—selling ice cream, old-fashioned candy by the pound and locally produced and crafted items—is a must. With so much to offer homebuyers so close to Raleigh, Quinn says, “I think Knightdale and Wendell are two of the best kept secrets in Wake County.”

veryone is so tired of winter—all we can think about is spring and warmer weather. With the sunshine comes floral displays to brighten our days and push even the grumpiest soul into blissfully gay spirits. But why sit around and wait for spring? This season’s design squad has bestowed big, bold floral designs into our formerly neutral decor. I’m not talking about your granny’s floral sofa,

but new inventive, contemporary images that brighten our spaces—and keep within our comfort zone. Incorporating this refreshing trend doesn’t require you to pitch out everything that you currently have and start from scratch. No, it’s about introducing a seductive pattern into a monotone landscape. Throw pillows can only carry a new theme so far. At some

point, you must be willing to step out of the box and invest in one new and exciting upholstery member to enliven your room’s scape. If that scares you, think about how easy (and fun) it would be to shop for just one individual piece of furniture. Your budget, depending on where you shop, should be between $350 to $1,500 for a quality accent chair. Keep your color and pattern selection within the existing field of your present-day living space. If you have a blue sofa, find a floral pattern that includes that matching hue or coordinates with the colors. Or be a little more edgy and transform an all-white or neutral space by introducing a bold floral print, and depend on accessories to tie it all together. The key to introducing any new print or color is tone. This is the color family that exists in all fabrics, floor coverings, paint, lamp shades, etc.

If you have a white sofa, don’t try to incorporate a floral rug or fabric with a cream background. You’ll always be unsatisfied. Floral doesn’t have to be big splashes of color. It can be a tone-on-tone print or black and white. The Milano chair is stunning in classic nautical blue and white, but the pattern is an outsized floral pattern. This season, you can easily find the perfect print for your home’s decor. Taylor King’s Banning chair is a refreshing update on the classic wing chair. Its tight-back style keeps it traditional, but the gray, cream and steel blue contemporary floral fabric gives it a whimsical touch that puts it on trend. The Gavin chair is another great example of an update wing chair with exposed wood and a jaunty ocean blue and lime green floral print. A clever touch of color transforms the setting when paired with matching pil-

lows and preppy square ottomans. If you have a room that just doesn’t seem to be coming together no matter how hard you try, a floral print that encompasses all the colors could be your solution. A pair of Myers slipper chairs, upholstered in an avocado, gold and aqua print, pulls this space together. It has the same shade of white in the background as the sofa, the aqua works with the gray and the green leather chair is a perfect match for the floral design. The Rain rug is an animated botanical pattern. It provides the home decorator an opportunity to play off multiple colors and shapes when designing the room. The Jolene rug also offers heaps of color, but its navy and cream palette allows it to fit comfortably in a sunroom with neutral furnishings. These are just two of the dozens of floral options. Pink is this year’s new neutral, and expressed in a daring floral pattern as shown on the Jarvis chair it is forthright, colorful and inviting. Regardless

of how boldly you step into this trend, you will find it a refreshing substitute from solids, solids and more solids of the past few seasons.

Leather 101

Make sure you’re getting your leather-care info from the right place by Allen Norwood

Y

ou need to dust your leather furniture regularly. Those hand sanitizers that seem almost ubiquitous at the drugstore and doctor’s office, especially during flu season, can damage the arms of your leather recliner. And you can’t treat “naked” leather as you would the leather seats in the family SUV. Those are three tidbits I learned from Cheryl Sigmon, director of merchandising for Bradington-Young, a Hickory company that makes fine leather furniture. The company, a division of Hooker Furniture, just launched a push to educate buyers about leather care. Each buyer will get a care kit and tips on how to use the products. Why now? Because some customers didn’t seem to be getting all the information they needed at the time of purchase, Sigmon says. “We train salespeople,” she says, “but there’s lots of turnover at the retail level.

14R

If (buyers) aren’t taught at the retail level, if they don’t learn, they think they don’t need to do anything—and that the (leather) is going to stay the same for 20 years.” Then, of course, more and more buyers bypass the retail store altogether. Sigmon says most Bradington-Young furniture is sold through retail stores, but you’ll find the company’s recliners online at Wayfair. I’m just guessing, but I’ll bet many of those online buyers return to the internet for leather care advice. They might be getting harmful advice, I told Sigmon, instead of no advice at all. Absolutely, she says. “I saw a (leather care product) video that actually scared me to death. I have no idea what’s in that product.” Here’s a notion: When you buy furniture online, go to the manufacturer’s site—not YouTube—for advice on care and maintenance. No matter where you bought your

leather furniture, you can learn more about the different types of leathers, and how to care properly for all of them, at bradington-young.com/leathercare.inc. Anyway, more tidbits: Most of us know to keep furniture out of direct sunlight. Of course it’s going to fade your leather; it fades your rugs and hardwood floors. Don’t forget to dust your leather furniture regularly. “If you don’t remove that dust,” Sigmon says, “over time it can break down the top coat of the leather and lead to deterioration.” Don’t use products designed for automobile seats on your great room leather. The leathers are not the same. “Auto leather has a harder surface,” Sigmon says. The wrong auto product might damage your furniture upholstery leather. Hand lotion can stain leather, especially a soft “naked” leather like aniline, which lacks a hard, protective finish. The stain might dissipate over time—if you

SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION . THE NEWS & OBSERVER . SUNDAY, MARCH 17, 2019

stop smearing on more hand lotion—as the oils are absorbed into the leather. Better to avoid the stain. Beware of hand sanitizer. It’s easy to reach for a squirt at the doctor’s office, or from that bottle in your car console, but it can damage your leather furniture. “The main ingredient is alcohol,” Sigmon says, “and that alcohol will break down any top coat on leather.” Sometimes, when you’re not feeling well or are fighting chronic illness, you just want to retire to your comforting recliner. Alas, some medications—blood pressure medicine, for instance—can transfer from your body and harm your favorite chair. Like hand sanitizer, Sigmon says, medicines can also damage the top coat of leather. Allen Norwood: homeinfo@charter.net
