2015-16 BOARD AND EXECUTIVE REPORT The last 12 months have been a period of consolidation in Victoria with the national club membership model well understood by the community, staffing structures and roles stabilised and resourcing assigned to our key business areas. Our key metrics reflected this period of consolidation with affiliated club numbers increasing slightly to 44 (from 41) and membership following a similar growth to another record high of 3186 (from 3,134). These increases saw Victoria move to third on the ‘state membership table’ and we predict further consolidation in the coming year as our staffing resources are further directed towards providing increased support to clubs, members and our event stakeholders. In 2015-16, at the instigation of Steven Gatt, Triathlon Victoria had great pleasure in recognising the past Presidents of the association at the second Annual Awards breakfast. This event reinforced our role in connecting the triathlon community both past and present, highlighted by • The recognition of TV Past President’s ttendance of TV ‘Legends of Multisport’ and the formal •A presentation to Emma Carney (2015 inductee) and Rohan Phillips (2016 inductee) • Inaugural State Series Awards o Bayside Triathlon Club – Club Shield (large) and Performance Club o Geelong Performance Coaching – Club Shield (small) The triathlon progression towards a single unified entity continued with a new 5-year strategic plan launched in April and the commitment to use expert consultancy services to assist in working through the complexity of any governance changes. The strategic plan is ambitious and re-emphasises our role to grow participation and provide a valuable connection between the stakeholders. A clear example of the partnership approach between state and national was the appointment of Tracy Doherty to a shared participation role based in Victoria. Tracy works on both national and state participation initiatives with particular focus on our ‘TriActive’ program. The ‘TriActive’ initiative is funded through the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation and has a key focus of attracting new participants to sporting activities. Triathlon Victoria made significant changes to the management of the 4th Yarrawonga Mulwala MultiSport Festival. The event management role was brought ‘inhouse’ and with the help of some contract staff and local partnerships the event maintained over 800 across the multisport program. We appreciated the partnership with the local Splash n Dash committee to the extent that TV has now licenced the event with a three year transition period to full local ownership.
Triathlon Victoria Annual Report 2015-2016
We would like to recognise the important work of all the volunteers involved in triathlon – club committees, coaches, technical officials and event crews. It is the essence of volunteering that is the backbone of sport and a culture celebrated in Australia. We recognise our club volunteers each year at the Annual Awards breakfast and highlighted the work of Roy Solterbeck (BCB Multisport) in 2016. The team at Triathlon Victoria of Grant, Sue, Alex, Tracy and Curtis continue to deliver a great service and are critical in driving the background work that keeps triathlon safe, fair and growing. The committee also went through significant change with the departure of Steven Gatt as President and board members Neil Brewster and Liz Gosper during the year. We welcomed Amanda Green and Lawrence West to appointed director positions (March 2016) and Ailie Coulter to the role of Acting President (June 2016). The board continues to work tirelessly to manage the associations affairs and keep the best interest of members at the forefront of their thinking.

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM In 2015-16 the Triathlon Victoria Development Program (TVDP) comprised 34 members from all over Victoria and we continued to operate one of the biggest squads in Australia. Led by Dave Huggett (Manager/Coach) and Sue Sharples (Administration/ Coach) and supported by over a dozen coaches at races, camps and time trials the program continues to strive to provide the environment for athletes to achieve their personal best. Whilst the athletes have their own ‘home coach’ who is encouraged and welcomed to be involved in the program, it is this group of coaches that we sincerely thank for their continued support. The program aims to: • r ecruit talented females and males (12-23 years old) with the goal of developing them into national ITU high performance athletes. •p rovide Development Coaches with the opportunity to gain experience and mentoring from experienced Performance Coaches rovide a pathway for senior athletes of the program to •p undertake the Development coaching course and support the program in the future.
CAMPS The program conducted two training camps at the Geelong Grammar School in July and September 2015. The camps are essentially a pre-season opportunity for athletes to build a training base and work on their technical skills. The venue provides excellent facilities and the coaches scour the region to provide exciting places to ride and run including mountain biking/trail running in the You Yangs. A comprehensive education program is now a feature of the camps and provide the athletes with specific psychological supports, strength and conditioning skills and nutritional advice.
TIME TRIALS Two time trials are held during the season a) for selection to the program and b) to gain National Performance Standard (NPS) times. These time trials are an important part of the program for athletes looking to race at national ITU races or gain selection to the National Development Camp. We were fortunate to access the recovery facilities at the Victorian Institute of Sport and receive expert advice.

TREASURER’S REPORT The 2015/16 financial year saw a significant improvement in the net profit for the financial year against the year prior with a recorded surplus of $12,323. Triathlon Victoria identified several key focus areas in 2015 which supported the improved financial outcome; • T he continued support of club membership and consolidated growth • Improvement in the whole of sport budgeting process in line with Triathlon Australia and the STTA’s • Increased focus on, and attraction of, additional funding through grants • Commercial sponsorship through the Victorian Triathlon State Series, Triathlon Victoria Awards and Victorian Duathlon series In targeting the key focus areas our revenue increased by 3% over the period, largely attributable to grant revenue. The focus on grants has resulted in Triathlon Victoria being able to provide additional resources to grassroots programs aimed at driving participation and new membership prospects. Annual membership revenue increased over the period predominantly due to increased fees driven by Triathlon Australia. Whilst our event revenue was impacted by the Triathlon Victoria Board decision to exit out of the organisations role as the Race Director of the Yarrawonga Mulwala Multisport Festival, it comes at no net impact to the organisation and ensures that Triathlon Victoria is not competing with our commercial partners in the event marketplace. Whilst expenditure for the year grew by 1%, cost reductions for the year have contributed to drive a positive overall result. Our employee expenses increased however the increased costs have been offset through the grants revenue providing cost neutral positioning. Triathlon Victoria’s Balance Sheet is healthy with increase cash due to grant income received. The reciprocal nature of the grants has resulted in a large liability for grant Income on the Balance sheet which is then released as milestones related to the grants are achieved.
Triathlon Victoria Annual Report 2013-2014
The possible move towards a more unified management model should see some efficiencies being driven across each of the STTA’s and associated cost reductions in future years. The 2016-17 budget is once again very conservative and focused on membership numbers being maintained and our resourcing the same to deliver the programs under our grant commitments.

TECHNICAL REPORT Season 2015-16 brought further positive change for the Technical Program. With the overriding emphasis on increased professionalism, several administrative improvements saw enhanced communication and engagement between Triathlon Victoria and Technical Officials. The Technical Committee, guided by Jenny Hosking, Brian Hinton and Sally Ham, expanded to include Andrew McGuire and Debra Barron. This group provided fantastic guidance and support to me throughout the year and operated with integrity and strong commitment to the best interests of triathlon officiating. From a training perspective, three Level One Courses (two metropolitan, one regional) saw the introduction of nine new officials, while a Level Two program saw three officials gain higher qualifications. The Level One candidates were the first to undertake their field assessment through the formal competencies framework. This proved successful with identified skills being assessed in the field through the use on senior officials in assessment and mentoring roles. The Albury-Wodonga course was a highlight, with Jenny Hosking traveling to spend time with an eager group of officials and building regional capacity to manage the safety and fairness of racing. Jenny was also recognized by Triathlon Australia at the 2016 Annual Awards winning the Rob George Award for her contribution to, and mentoring of, other officials – congratulations, a very well deserved award. It was a strong year for the officiating program with 216 appointments, across 38 open sanctioned events from a team of 45 individuals. A brilliant effort from a committed team of volunteers. Special thanks must also be given to the TVTC plus Barry Majetic for sanctioning all events along the way. Tony Ruddick and Russell Tremayne were provided with development opportunities at an interstate event as part of Triathlon Australia’s support program for officials. Several other TOs self-funded to events of national significance for their personal growth and development triathlon and multisport events. Policy improvements were made to the administration, selection and communication processes with significant input from the Technical Committee.
