1, 2, JUST FOR YOU! ZANY ZOO Take a trip to the zoo with us. Look at the animals pictured in each rectangle and say each of their names. Listen for the first sound. When you find the correct letter, trace and circle it. Create a fun story about a crazy, zany trip to the zoo!
3, 4, ASK FOR MORE!
Pretend your house has become a zoo. Move around as your favorite animal. Do you crawl or walk (on two legs or four)? Make that animal’s signature sound. When the fun is over and the zoo needs to calm down, count from five down to zero.

A Dog
Named Mary Visits Yellowstone National Park
By Gayle M. Irwin | Photos by Gayle M. and Gregory P. Irwin
A
CHAPTER 11
ll kinds of water can be found in Yellowstone National Park. Rivers, lakes, streams, and waterfalls are part of the beauty of America’s first national park. People fly fish along rivers like the Madison, the Gibbon, and the Yellowstone. People boat on Yellowstone Lake and Lewis Lake. People take photos of the Upper and Lower Yellowstone Falls and Lewis Falls. Each of these waterways and more can also provide water and food for the wildlife that lives in the park. The area known as the Lamar Valley, located in the northeastern area of Yellowstone, is a vibrant meadow with a river flowing through it. Many different species of wildlife, including bison, bears, wolves, geese, elk, cranes, and other creatures can be observed here. The Lamar River provides good grass for grazers such as bison and elk, and these animals provide food for the grizzly bears and wolves that roam through the area. Many species of birds may also be found here, including waterfowl like Canada geese and the Sandhill Crane, which uses marshy and grassland areas.

Next week Mary and her family make one more stop before leaving the park – find out what they discover.
Mary, a black and white springer spaniel, enjoys exploring the woods.
Another important river is located on the western side of Yellowstone. The Madison is known for its great fly fishing and for wildlife observations, for species like elk and ducks. Sandhill cranes can sometimes be seen in the meadows by the river. Waterfalls are also seen in different areas of the park. The Upper and Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River on the eastern side of the park provide great opportunities to take pictures. Lewis Falls, on the western side of the park, is named after the famous explorer of the early 1800s, Merewether Lewis. This is a lovely spot to enjoy a snack or picnic lunch as you watch and listen to the waterfall. It,
too, makes a terrific photo. Yellowstone Lake is one of the largest lakes in the world. It is home for cutthroat trout and lake trout. You might also see animals, like the playful otter, a bald eagle waiting for a fish, or ducks, geese, and pelicans. Sailboats and motorboats are often seen on the lake. Some people also use canoes and kayaks on Yellowstone Lake. Your family may want to rent a boat, fish along the shoreline, or skip rocks along the lake’s edge. There are many other, smaller lakes in the park. Some a person must hike in order to get there. Others are found close Yellowstone’s roadways; the water and the animals that use it can be observed and heard from your car. Just remember when you’re at a river, stream, lake, or waterfall, tiny mosquitoes may want to bite. These itty-bitty bugs love to hang out near water. And though Mary likes to be near water, too, even she doesn’t like to be bitten by those tiny, pesky creatures! To be continued
