Wesley’s actual economic ethic can be summarised in four points: 1. Ultimately everything belongs to God; 2. Resources are placed in our care to use as God sees fit; 3. God desires that we use these resources to meet our necessities (i.e., providing shelter and food for ourselves and dependents), and then to help others in need; thus 4. Spending resources on luxuries for ourselves while others remain in need is robbing God! (see note)

2

MWS CHARITY GOLF 2017

MESSAGE FROM BISHOP & MWS PATRON

Rev Dr Chong Chin Chung It’s time for MWS to raise funds again! When I was first appointed Bishop, I was informed that one of my key responsibilities was to help MWS with fundraising. I thought to myself: If it is to benefit the less fortunate and needy, share the grace of God with them and improve their quality of life, I’d be more than happy to do it. Moreover, if it is an event that galvanises members of the Methodist community and their friends to do good, I simply cannot refuse. Let us take the lead of John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church, who devoted his life to the poor and disadvantaged. Here’s a paragraph from an essay explaining Wesley’s view on the poor, written by modern Methodist research scholar Randy L. Maddox and published in the book, The Poor and the People Called Methodists (Kingswood Books, 2002): Wesley’s actual economic ethic can be summarised in four points: 1. (see note) It can be inferred from Maddox’s argument that all Christians, and not just Methodists, should be caretakers of God’s resources. Whatever we earned or have been blessed with, we must safekeep them faithfully and use them wisely. Thank you, my Methodist friends, for participating in this golf tournament. This is not just a wonderful opportunity to learn the finer points of golf from each other, but also to enjoy the friendship and camaraderie. More importantly, this event is a timely reminder that still living among us are compatriots who are so much less fortunate that they don’t have enough to feed themselves three meals a day. Some still struggle to make ends meet due to depleted family finances, the

challenges of single parenthood, being a poor and lonely senior, and so on. For some of them, just receiving donations isn’t enough. As the social concerns arm of the Methodist Church in Singapore, MWS reaches out to the community to spread our message of love. In fact, its social workers and staff have so dedicated themselves to helping the weak and needy that it has received the government and society’s recognition and acknowledgment. This, however, isn’t a Methodist effort alone. All Christians are our brothers and sisters. Let us do our best to come together to support MWS with our actions, on top of appreciating the organisation for its work. I sincerely urge everyone to endorse and give thanks for this fundraising effort. May God remember your love and kindness.

“Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord and He will repay him for his deed.” Proverbs 19:17 (ESV)

MESSAGE FROM GUEST-OF-HONOUR

Mr Cecil Wong

“It is important to see that in the end, real lives and real human beings are impacted by your generosity.”

This is truly a great honour for me. I’ve been an ardent supporter of the MWS Fellowship on the Greens since it started, 29 years ago! I want to thank all of you for your very generous donations. And while indeed the money raised will go to a worthy cause, it is important to see that in the end, real lives and real human beings are impacted by your generosity. Your donations can make all the difference to them. So enjoy the fresh air, enjoy the fellowship, and enjoy the golf. As for me, I promise not to take unfair advantage of my fellow competitors’ youth and inexperience!

MWS CHARITY GOLF 2017

MESSAGE FROM MWS CHAIRPERSON

Rev Dr Daniel K. S. Koh

“At MWS, we continually work towards closing gaps and meeting under-served needs in Singapore.”

MWS Charity Golf Tournament Fellowship on the Greens is now in its 29th year. We are grateful to God for this annual opportunity to raise funds in support of the less fortunate under the care of Methodist Welfare Services (MWS). It is a joy to see supporters from various Methodist churches, donors and sponsors gather for an excellent day of fellowship. At MWS, we continually work towards closing gaps and meeting under-served needs in Singapore. In recent years, the rapidly ageing population posed many challenges in caring for the sick, frail and elderly. For this reason, MWS will double its eldercare services to 12 by 2017 to meet the increasing need. A second nursing home in Yew Tee will be opened in August 2017. This home will care for up to 197 bed bound and wheelchair bound patients from low income families. In addition, homecare services will be provided for frail residents needing help with daily living activities in their own homes in the Yew Tee area. We are also expanding our senior outreach services with two more MWS Senior Activity Centres in Pasir Ris and Kebun Baru. We welcome partnership and involvement from the church and business community to reach out to seniors living alone or at risk of social isolation. With these new services, MWS will be running 20 centres and services, up from 14 just one year ago. More than ever, we need your constant support to

enable us to care for the under-served and impact lives of those in need every day. I am thankful that to-date, the event has raised more than $400,000. On behalf of our beneficiaries, I would like to thank all who have contributed so generously and compassionately to MWS Fellowship on the Greens this year. It is especially meaningful to have Barker Road Methodist Church (BRMC) as the convening church this year as they had organised the inaugural MWS Fellowship on the Greens event in 1989. Thank God for Rev Dr Chiu Ming Li, and the Organising Committee led by Mr Ho Kah-Choy, and his team – Mr Mervyn Fong, Mr Daniel Go, Mr Terence Goh, Mr Peter Sim and Mr Kevin Tan for giving your valuable time, support, and making all this possible. I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to donors and sponsors for their generosity and support, in particular, Barker Road Methodist Church & Members, Far East Organization, Mr Choe Peng Sum, NTUC FairPrice Foundation, Robert Khan & Co Pte Ltd, Tankstore, Wesley Methodist Church, Mr Ong Kian Min and Mr & Mrs Paul Lim. We are also privileged to have Mr Cecil Wong – a longterm supporter of MWS as our Guest-of-Honour gracing this event. “May He give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.” Psalm 20:4 (NIV) To God be the glory. MESSAGE FROM ORGANISING COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON

Mr Ho Kah-Choy

“I highly encourage you to take advantage of all the novelties, the mulligans, but also the free throws and 1-metre holes to post the round of your life!” What do the birth of Jesus and the birth of golf have in common? In both cases shepherds were involved! And in the MWS Fellowship on the Greens, I’m proud to say that the two are linked again! First the golf, I sincerely hope that you have a good time today. While the last few Fellowship on the Greens have been defensive struggles, like the US Open, where the winning score is only 2 below par, we have set up the tournament to be fun, fun like a shootout, like a birdie barrage, like the back-nine of Augusta National on Sunday afternoon at the Masters. I highly encourage you to take advantage of all the novelties, the mulligans, but also the free throws and 1-metre holes to post the round of your life! I want to thank all of you for your very generous donation. It is by using what God has blessed us with to bless others that we participate in God’s great plan to redeem the world. Martin Luther once said that we are saved by faith alone, but the faith that saves is never alone. It is always accompanied by acts of compassion and the belief that every human being is sacred, created in the image of God. During the plagues of the first and second centuries, while pagans fled the cities, Christians stayed and cared for the sick and the poor, pagan and Christian alike. This is the compassion that conquered the Roman Empire.

6

MWS CHARITY GOLF 2017

In the same way, MWS is making a difference, caring for the poor, the sick and the destitute, both Christian and non-Christian. And it is your donation and participation in this event that helps to make it all happen. Thank you again!

MESSAGE FROM BRMC PASTOR-IN-CHARGE

Rev Dr Chiu Ming Li

“Let’s go out on the Orchid Country Club golf course and enjoy each other’s fellowship amongst fellow believers, donors and friends of MWS.” In the true spirit of Methodism, we would want to reach out to the poor and needy in whatever way we can, whilst concurrently sharing the love of God with them as in Matthew 5:3 (NIV) “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” So, true to Methodist Welfare Services’ vision to “exemplify God’s love, enabling the poor and needy to have life to the full”, the annual MWS Fellowship on the Greens Golf Tournament will not only raise funds, but also enable MWS to raise awareness of the needs of the poor and needy.

I would like to also thank the organising committee and MWS staff for putting their heart and soul into organising this year’s tournament. Let’s go out on the Orchid Country Club golf course and enjoy each other’s fellowship amongst fellow believers, donors and friends of MWS. God bless and have a blessed day filled with many “birdies”!

Barker Road Methodist Church is indeed honoured and privileged to be the convenor for this year’s MWS Fellowship on the Greens Golf Tournament on 19 July 2017. In the spirit of the tournament name and as mentioned in Psalm 55:14 (NIV) “with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship at the house of God, as we walked about among the worshipers”, we - fellow Christians and Methodists walk the golf course in fellowship with God and with each other. This year’s event raised more than $400,000 and BRMC has decided that the donations would be used for all centres under MWS instead of dedicating it to a single centre. We would like to thank all of you who have contributed in your generous donations and participation in this golf tournament.

IMPACTING LIVES EVERY DAY After 35 years of serving the less fortunate, Methodist Welfare Services (MWS) continues to live our mission of helping those who fall through the cracks of society. Our services are built around a holistic and integrated approach to create sustained positive impact for our beneficiaries. Our 20 centres and outreach programmes across Singapore offer critical services to the young and old of all races and religions:

Giving Care To The Man With One Wish Near blindness. Low blood pressure. Gastric ulcers. Anaemia. Malnutrition. These are the medical conditions Mr Ler has to manage every day, for many years. Life got worse when the 74-year-old fainted and fell at home in early 2016. He suffered a spinal fracture, and was hospitalised for 6 months. Mr Ler has no family to look after him after his discharge from the hospital. But he was adamant to go back to his rental flat as he wishes to live as independently as possible at home. He was referred to MWS HomeJoy, our homecare service. Since last August, our doctors and nurses have been caring for his health and well-being. He has resumed his cherished daily strolls around the estate, and living his one wish to be at home, in his neighbourhood.

Giving Hope To The Left-Behind Girl At 4 years old, many children are starting to read simple words. Shanda, however, could not recognise a single letter of the alphabet when she entered MWS D’Joy Children’s Centre. She comes from a single-parent family where her mother is the sole breadwinner and spends an entire day at work. Concerned, her Nursery 2 level teachers paid extra attention and formulated an intensive reading programme for her. Shanda was also individually coached on phonetics and writing by a volunteer tutor. By the end of her first year, she could read simple words and had become more fluent in speaking English. Now 6, reading and counting are no longer difficult tasks for her. When she starts primary school next year, she has the opportunity like any other child to go as far as she possibly can.

Giving Strength To The Brave Mother Madam Zhou was devastated when she was diagnosed with cancer two years ago. The pain of chemotherapy was eclipsed by the fear of mounting medical expenses and her sons’ polytechnic education fees. For 15 years, she had raised her two boys singlehandedly by pulling long work hours and being extremely thrifty. Just when she thought she had some decent savings, the cancer treatments wiped out every cent from her bank account. She tried to continue working, but the excruciating treatments made it near impossible. Witnessing her struggles, her sons began to shoulder all household chores in spite of their busy school schedules. In early 2017, MWS got to know the family and their needs, and is helping them with their debt and finances through our Family Development Programme.

Giving Warmth To The Lonely Senior Last September, Mr Liau Vui Hon was another typical justretired senior. Having lived a sedentary life, he was physically unfit and suffered from diabetes and chronic knee pain. As his wife is still working, he often felt lonely and lost. Fortunately, he saw a flyer on MWS Senior Activity Centre (Fernvale Rivergrove) and signed up as a member. Every morning, he joins other seniors for half an hour of exercise. Twice weekly, he goes for strength training under the centre’s Gym Tonic Programme. Within six months, his health has improved so much that he shaved 5kg off his weight, and got his glucose levels under control. He enjoys the companionship of his newfound friends and activities in the centre. His favourite includes playing Rummikub, a popular memory tile game, which he said is good training for his ageing brain.
