SUMMER HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY FAVORITE SEASON. I live for the lighthearted, less-scheduled, long sunny days to linger with loved ones. It’s a time for adventure and travel, for family reunions, for reading new books by the beach, for sipping summer cocktails by the pool, and for perching on one of Austin’s best patios to watch a stunning sunset. Despite the Texas heat, I stand firm that Austin is a perfect place for summertime fun with the family. As a mom of three boys, I have experienced all that Austin has to offer throughout their baby to teenage years, and I am tremendously grateful for the city’s ice cold swimming holes and plentiful entertainment options, but mostly, I cherish the downtime, the lazy days, the opportunity to truly connect with my kids before that pesky back-to-school season returns and marks the passing of time.

In our July/August issue, we celebrate the summer months with a focus on family. From Amanda Nelson’s motherhood journey to Tara Miko Ballentine's quest for meaningful conversations between parents and children, to a spotlight on the Beall family history of Zilker Park’s mini train, and our mother-daughter cover models making memories before the transition to college years — we’re sharing stories of the many facets of family life.

In true TRIBEZA style, we also highlight some of our favorite looks of the season. Inspired by vintage high society, our latest fashion shoot features playful yet sophisticated pieces that will take you from the pool to the party. For our Street Style feature, we teamed up with Austin FC to see what the players are wearing off the field.

We’re sharing the best event picks of the season, how nighttime swims are magical in Barton Springs, why you’ll want to pack a picnic for a night of theater in the park, which books to add to your reading list, and much more.

I sincerely hope that you enjoy this issue as much as our team loved putting it together.

Make the most of your moments of leisure. Squeeze in some extra hugs from your family, and remember that Austin is a pretty amazing place to spend those lazy days of summer. Stay cool out there, friends!

From the Forty Acres to the 2024 Summer Olympics: Texas athletes to watch

The journey to gold is paved with meticulous preparation and constant improvement, says Alison Gibson. As a 2020 Tokyo Olympian and 2024 Paris Olympic hopeful, Gibson knows firsthand what it takes to make a successful Olympic run. Her counsel to her fellow Olympic hopefuls?

“This experience teaches you that success is not just about the big moments but also the daily commitment – it’s thousands of small choices that add up to a big moment. That’s true for excellence in any pursuit, whether it’s in sports, the workplace, or life in general.”

Gibson and her colleague Dan Neil recently spoke with us about the summer Olympics and the rising stars at their alma mater vying for their shots at the

podium in Paris. Both Gibson and Neil are former student-athletes at Texas who work closely with current student-athletes on behalf of Ouro, a global financial services and technology innovator based in Austin.

They were eager to share who they’re watching so our readers can follow and support our local student-athletes as they tune in.

“It’s really admirable and inspiring to watch what these athletes are working to achieve, and we think it’s important to share that with our community and rally behind them,” said Neil.

Gibson and Neil work with a growing roster of over 200 student-athletes at Texas who recently signed Name Image Likeness deals where they earn

ART INSTALLATION

ENCOURAGES STRANGERS TO ENGAGE WITH EACH OTHER IN NATURE

Connecting at the CONVERSATION STONES

Austin-based artist Diego Miró-Rivera has unveiled a natural art installation, "Conversation Stones," on the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail as part of the City of Austin's TEMPO program. This initiative, overseen by The Trail Conservancy and the Economic Development Department's Art in Public Places Program, aims to enhance public spaces with temporary, site-specific art that fosters community engagement and exploration.

"Conversation Stones" features 32 alluvial stones sourced from Williamson County, arranged on the lawn of International Shores at Lady Bird Lake Metropolitan Park. Each stone invites passers-by to sit and engage in face-to-face conversations, promoting real-world interactions in an era dominated by digital communication. The artist's goal was to create a space where people can gather and build connections in a natural setting.

“Conversation Stones is composed of local limestones, naturally formed over thousands of years, and arranged to make a place for dialogue,” said Miró-Rivera. “You are invited to stroll the grass paths, choose a stone that calls to you, and become grounded. By placing yourself on a Conversation Stone, you are signaling your openness to engage with anyone who inhabits a corresponding

stone. This is an opportunity to get to know your community, be courteous, and create a meaningful experience.”

Hanna Cofer, Chief Operating Officer of TTC, expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its success as part of the TEMPO program.

“It's been amazing to see how 'Conversation Stones' has transformed the space. It's become a venue for meetings, family gatherings, and spontaneous interactions, truly embodying the diverse uses of our park and trail,” said Cofer. She emphasized the importance of public art in Austin’s green spaces, noting that “it goes to what public art is supposed to do, which is telling our stories and creating great experiences.”

Miró-Rivera, a native Austinite with a deep love for the trail, drew inspiration from his experiences along the path.

"The magic of these interactions is spontaneity," he explained. "People come across the stones and find themselves in conversations with strangers, creating unexpected connections."

He described the installation process as a collaborative effort, with local friends and volunteers helping to place the stones and shape the layout to reflect different social dynamics.

"Conversation Stones" is designed to be interactive and flexible, with arrangements catering to various social dynamics, from intimate one-on-one conversations to larger group discussions. The thoughtful placement and maintenance of the stones ensure a harmonious integration with the natural environment. He uses a manual mower to maintain the grass, avoiding noise pollution and preserving the tranquility of the space.

In addition to fostering community dialogue, the TEMPO program supports local artists and enhances Austin's cultural landscape. The program is meant to promote tourism, cultivate curiosity, spark imagination, engage the community in a meaningful dialogue about public art, and foster work by local artists.

The installation has already hosted a variety of interactions, from prom photos to veterans reuniting after years apart. Miró-Rivera is often present at the installation and welcomes community engagement.

“I’m very accessible, and I’m at the stones all the time,” explained the artist. “If anyone wants to meet there for a conversation or a tour, please reach out.”

For those interested in experiencing "Conversation Stones," the installation will be displayed on the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-andBike Trail through April 2025. Visitors are encouraged to share their experiences and photos, contributing to the ongoing dialogue and evolution of this public art piece. "Conversation Stones" represents not just an artistic endeavor, but a community effort to foster meaningful connections and celebrate the spirit of Austin.

ENERATIONS OF STYLE

Modeling these chic summer styles are Melanie Packer, owner of popular Austin salon Deep Roots ATX, and her daughter, Jenna Jacobs, an aspiring model.

“When asked if I would be interested in shooting for TRIBEZA’s summer Family Issue with my daughter Jenna, I was thrilled,” shared Melanie. “I knew it would be a great experience and memory to cherish for the both of us. Jenna graduated from high school this year, and anyone who has experienced this stage of motherhood knows how hard it is to see your child go off to college, so this shoot is really special for us.”

For Jenna, the feeling of excitement about this fashion shoot was mutual.

“I love modeling, so getting to do it with my mom was so much fun and so awesome,” said Jenna. “Spending any time with her before I leave [for college] is very important to me, but this was on another level. The experience was definitely something I’ll remember forever!”

TRICK HAT WORKWAY

A BETTER WAY TO WORK

Where business flexes with nature. Where all pursuits are possible. Where Austin happens.

SERENE NIGHT SWIMS

Every full moon, you can howl like a wild animal and fit in perfectly. Otherwise, Barton Springs is a relaxed space after sunset. The enchantment of the twinkling summer fireflies and molting Egyptian geese throwing tiny feathers across shady patches of grass feel like little treasures welcoming visitors to the Springs from the moment they step on the hillside.

Night swimmers are not restricted to just human moonbathers at Barton Springs. “They don’t have any natural predators here, that’s why we think they keep coming back,” said a lifeguard regarding the gaggle of geese. Visitors lit up when we asked if they’d seen the goose babes. They mentioned the blue herons and talked about turtles taking rides on the water. While the hilly lawn has grown patchy and dirt-bare in the summer heat, people keep coming back to swim at dusk, when the grounds grow serene.

“I’m here every single night,” said Kyle Ellison. He was gathered with his friends near the white goose feathers and the diving board, but closer to the water, where the springs discharge. That’s where the water is colder, he explained. He donned goggles and fins to dive in and see the fish, turtles, and crawdads near the vent. A spring-goer since the 80s, he said the water helps you relax and unwind, “no matter what frame of mind you’re in.” He also asserts that the

water calms the nervous system and helps you sleep better too. Ellison’s friends agreed that the spring water is healing.

“You get a cellular craving for [the Springs,]” noted David Ansel, a 25-year loyal springsdipper.

Sometimes, the daytime bathers stay late, like Javier Ramirez, from Laredo, who said he’s been popping by the springs since he moved to Austin three decades ago. He heads home by about 8:30 p.m. if he’s on his own, but comes back with his kids for night swims in the summer. “It calms down a lot then,” he claimed. A three to four times weekly visitor, Ramirez had just emerged from the pool and sat between his two daughters when we spoke to him. The girls used to have a hard time with the cold water temperature, he told us, but relish it now.

Some of the nighttime swimmers frequent the pool at all hours. Alex Reichek hurt her back five years ago and started swimming laps at Barton Springs after that.

“I swim a mile two to three times a week,” she said. “I have built such a good community with the elderly in the morning … I have my morning swim people I see, and then I have my night swim.”

For her, those connections are priceless. A year-round swimmer, she said the pool is a great social alternative to going to a bar, and after a

BARTON SPRINGS AFTER SUNSET

long day of work, is a safe place to get exercise and decompress.

Looking up from the lawn at Barton Springs, dragonflies spiraled overhead, and a jewel in Austin’s crown shone brightly in the radiance of the overhead lights, glowing skyline beyond, and more distant stars.

A magical place indeed, Barton Springs welcomes moonbathers nightly until 10 p.m., with the exception of Thursdays.

Soulful SONGBIRD

ALESIA LANI TAKES FLIGHT AT LONG CENTER'S FREE SUMMER CONCERT SERIES

When it comes to Austin’s vibrant music scene, you can't help but think of the soulful sensation, Alesia Lani. Born and raised in the heart of Texas, Lani's journey from a young poet to a celebrated R&B artist is as eclectic as her music. This summer, she's set to grace the stage at the Long Center's Drop-In series, bringing her infectious energy and soul-stirring melodies to music lovers of all ages.

With a voice that intertwines the soul of R&B with the heart of a poet, Lani effortlessly moves between genres, from soul and funk to rock and hip-hop. Her ability to write timeless music while staying true to herself sets her apart in the industry.

As she puts it, "I just do what I like and what I feel. I'm eclectic… authentic."

Her album, "Self Titled," released in Oct. 2023, is a testament to her raw talent and vulnerability as an artist. Each track feels like a glimpse into her diary, filled with honesty and transparency, but Lani doesn’t stop there. March brought us "Love Like Lo-fi," a refreshing mixtape that showcases her versatility and creativity, providing a perfect soundtrack for those moments of relaxation and introspection.

“I wanted to make a love mixtape,” explains Lani. “I kept it real chill. It was a relaxing, decompressing album after ‘Self-Titled,’ where I talk about my divorce and a lot of things in my life.”

What truly sets Lani apart is her electrifying stage presence. She says she “falls into the vibe of each song,” alternating her physicality between genres.

Known for her powerhouse performances that radiate primetime energy, she's shared stages with legends like George Clinton and contemporary heavy-hitters like Lizzo and Childish Gambino. Now, she's gearing up to bring that same energy to the Long Center.

When asked about her upcoming performance at the Drop-In Series, Lani couldn't contain her excitement. “It’s gonna be hot as hell," she says with a laugh. "But that 3D-printed stage? That's something else."

However, Lani isn’t just focused on the present moment. With a new videfor "Breaking Me Down" in the works and plans to finish her upcoming album, she's showing no signs of slowing down. With tour dates lined up for the summer, including recent shows at Antone’s and the Bastrop Pride Festival, there's plenty to look forward to for fans of this rising star.

So, whether you're a die-hard fan or just looking for a night of soulful tunes under the stars, mark your calendars for Alesia Lani's performance at the Long Center's Drop-In Series on Aug. 8.

The Long Center's free series features live music every Thursday this summer, through Aug. 15. Each lineup is released a week in advance and promises something for everyone, with genres ranging from psychedelic hip-hop to indie pop to classic rock, along with vendors and plenty of space for dogs and kiddos.

Musical History on the Hillside

This summer, Zilker Theatre Productions will celebrate its 65th anniversary with a free production of Legally Blonde the Musical. Put on your pink, pack a picnic, and head to the Beverly Sheffield Hillside Theater in Zilker Park to catch performances from July 12 through August 15 and help support a community institution that’s been an incubator for young performers for more than six decades.

HE MAKING OF A SUMMER MUSICAL

Theatergoers can expect to see the humor and empowering journey of the ambitious Elle Woods from the original movie, plus some special updates to bring the story into 2024.

“It’s such a timely story about this woman who shows how smart she is and that she's not to be judged based on her looks, or what she likes to wear, or what color she likes,” says Zilker Theatre Productions (ZTP) Stage Manager, Amy Oxley.

The many scene changes that need to come to life on an outdoor stage, the “really creative” set design, and the fast-paced, energetic songs — and hyper-pink lighting — are just a few highlights for the audience.

ZTP for two decades – started rehearsing about six weeks before opening night. They began with music week to learn the songs, and moved onto choreography week before beginning blocking rehearsal. Finally, about two weeks before opening night, the team moved rehearsals to the Hillside Theater in Zilker Park so that they could acclimate to the stage — and the oppressive heat.

“We have our tips and tricks,” says Oxley regarding Austin’s brutal summer temperatures. “We bring frozen fruit, and we have a little freezer in the back that’s always stocked with popsicles. It’s weird how quickly your body gets used to the heat. When the sun goes down, it's really not too bad at all. You get a nice little breeze.”

Oxley, who won the B. Iden Payne Award for stage management for ZTP’s production of Matilda the Musical last summer, previously worked as a professional stage manager at the Lyric Theater Oklahoma, then went on tour on land and by sea with an illusionist, and had a career-high stint working at Wicked on Broadway.

“The people [at ZTP] are just amazing,” says Oxley. “The production quality is so top tier. It really reminds me of working back in New York on professional, Broadway-style shows.”

THE MAGIC OF FREE COMMUNITY THEATRE

David Ponton, the Executive Director of ZTP, was once one of the young proteges sweating it out onstage.

“I did my first summer musical in 2003, and I’ve been involved in some capacity every year since,” explains Ponton. He was an actor in the musical Crazy For You that summer, and 21 summers later, he’s still dedicated to ZTP. “You get bit by the bug, and you just keep coming back. A lot of folks are working in 100-plus degree heat. There are bugs, animals, and everything that goes along with that, but for those of us who enjoy it, there's nothing else like it anywhere.”

And the number one thing that makes ZTP special? It’s always free.

“It’s accessible to the entire community,” says Ponton. “Everybody comes together, they sit next to each other, they laugh together, they cry together, and they have this amazing shared experience. It draws everybody together in a really beautiful way that only theatre can.”'

THE LONG, LYRICAL HISTORY OF ZTP

The original Hillside Theater stage was built in 1938, and the first production, a musical called Seventeen , hit the stage with a cast full of high school actors in 1959. Approximately 400 people saw the show. Today, about 25,000 people come to see the outdoor theatre production over its six-week run.

ZTP was originally funded by the Austin Parks and Recreation Department, but budget cuts starting in the 80s threatened the survival of the theater. That’s when the Friends of the Summer Musical organization formed, which evolved into the nonprofit Zilker Theatre Productions. Their fundraising, as well as corporate sponsorships, private donations, city grants, and the generosity of audiences who drop money into a passed bucket at each show, are what keep the summer

shows alive and singing today.

“For so many of the people that come see Zilker shows, the Zilker production is the one theatre performance they see a year, and that's because it's free,” says Oxley. “That's super powerful to me. It’s amazing to be a part of that history here in Austin.”

Past shows have included Oklahoma! in 1965, Fiddler on the Roof in 1977, Into the Woods in 2002, and Hairspray in 2015. ZTP alumni have gone on to have careers in the theatre industry, with some becoming Broadway stars, including J. Quinton Johnson, who made his Broadway debut in Hamilton as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison.

“Zilker has always been a training ground for young talent,” say’s Ponton. “It’s part of everything we do.” ZTP also hosts free arts education programming, such as helping young actors prepare for their first auditions.

PRO TIPS FOR OUTDOOR THEATERGOERS

Don’t let the heat deter you from seeing Legally Blonde the Musical in all its fuchsia glory. Ponton shared his pro tips for staying comfortable while seeing a summer show. “Show up early to get a spot. Hop in Barton Springs. Pack a picnic. Bring your friends, and get ready to have a great night under the Texas stars.”

Legally Blonde the Musical runs from July 12 through August 15 at the Beverly Sheffield Hillside Theatre in Zilker Park. with shows at 8:15 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.

In the heart of the idyllic and coveted Zilker neighborhood sits 1302 Garner, a 4,361-square-foot oasis that encapsulates the beauty, tranquility and design that Austin is known for. The five bedroom, 5.5 bathroom, two-story home listed by Anthony Gibson, Realtor, Realty Haus™ Group at Keller Williams beckons.

1302 Garner was constructed with the highest attention to detail and craftsmanship, led by Austin architectural firm CoXist and FIA Homes, a custom residential construction company founded in South Austin in 2010 by Brent Fannin . Fannin is a third-generation builder with a strong emphasis on modern and mid-century architecture and design. 1302 Garner is the first high-end spec home on the market in years, as many never even make it to market, selling early in the development or building process.

“My passion for construction comes from my family’s deep roots in the construction process,” said Fannin. “Creating homes that stand the test of time both structurally and aesthetically is something I’m passionate about. Seeing the finished result and knowing someone will live in a FIA built home is truly rewarding. I believe thoughtful design and an eye for details are the keys to creating a great project. My goal is to build every home the way I would build my personal residences. This passion for my projects ensures quality and craftsmanship in every home FIA builds.”

Enter through an elevated entry with suspended terracotta breeze blocks, a testament to incredible design and detail. Make your way to the kitchen, flush

with top-of-the-line features including Italian Olmo Elm and Laccato Opaco cabinets, as well as Caesarstone countertops. Whether hosting or relaxing, spend time in the spacious living area and enjoy fireplaces adorned with stone and textured wood. Retire to the luxurious primary suite through a hidden door, decorated in custom tile work and gold metal details. Adjustable mood lighting and controls span the health-focused home, allowing residents to set the lights to meet their body’s schedule, paired with a water mitigation system and clean air living. Expansive windows and glass doors integrate the outdoors with the indoors, true to Austin’s aesthetic. The varying rooflines allow for natural light to flood each room while still providing ample privacy.

In regards to the outdoors, given Austin’s hot summer temperatures, a pool is a necessity. 1302 Garner boasts 3 areas for your enjoyment – a courtyard equipped with an outdoor grill and tv, a spectacular Zen garden that you get to experience while lying in your primary bedroom, and a fun space where kids can play. A tranquil pool with a sleek design sits in the middle of the courtyard, in addition to a Casita at the back of the oversized lot, ideal for guests or a separate workspace. The exterior of the home features brick, natural hemlock wood overhangs, black steel details, and a three panel sliding gate, leaving no detail or design untouched.

From its grand entrance to its back Casita, there’s no property like 1302 Garner in the heart of Austin.

PULLMAN MARKET CELEBRATES TEXAS FARMERS, RANCHERS, BAKERS AND MAKERS AT SAN ANTONIO’S NEW CULINARY DESTINATION

Apopular destination for a day trip adventure or an easy weekend away, San Antonio’s historic Pearl is a favorite for luxury accommodations, as well as culinary and cultural delights. Once the site of the Pearl Brewery, which was first established in 1883, Pearl’s transformation into today’s vibrant community hub is something to behold. The latest development at the ever-evolving Pearl invites guests to immerse themselves in a foodie field trip and a tasting tour of Texas at Pullman Market.

Opened in April 2024, Pullman Market is touted as the largest culinary market in the Southwest, offering a specialty grocery curation of

Texas-based produce and goods from more than 200 vendors, along with a butcher, bakery, tortilleria, several restaurants and quick-bite eateries, coffee bar, ice cream shop, mezcal bar, impressive wine collection, plenty of grab-and-go food options, and many stylish and comfortable areas to sit and converse with friends. The list of Pullman Market offerings is lengthy, but at the heart of it all, you’ll find a celebration of Texas.

THIS IS FROM TEXAS; THIS IS FOR TEXAS

Pullman Market is led with passion by CEO Kevin Fink, also the CEO of Emmer & Rye Hospitality Group, best known for renowned restaurants like Emmer & Rye, Hestia, Kalimotxo, Canje, and Ezov. Pullman Market offers the same commitment to this San Antonio concept as it does to these Austin restaurants — quality, sustainability, and support for local farmers and producers.

In chatting with Fink about the Pullman, his excitement and sincerity about the project is palpable. Fink’s vision is “to create a space that is supportive of local food and local produce in a way that celebrates its uniqueness,” and his eyes light up when chatting about the process of how the Pullman operates — using elements of the meat, fish, grains, produce across all facets of the market. The beef that starts at the butcher counter, for example, can be found in their burgers, but also in an Italian ragu, by way of lard in their tortillas, and in jars of bone broth. Additionally, even compost is taken from the Pullman to Trosi Farms, a regenerative organic farm in Elgin, to help grow tomatoes that will eventually make their way to the market. “The whole vision for the market is so cool and circular. It’s really meant to be just an improvement on food systems and to have our entire operation vertically integrated,” adds Houston Eaves, Pullman’s Director of Bars. “We know that we're sourcing excellent produce, but we're also really supportive of farmers and fishermen and ranchers, and if there weren't people purchasing from these smaller producers, it'd be really tricky for them to survive, so it really helps the entire community of Texas.”

A RE-IMAGINED SPACE FOR COMMUNITY

When describing the initial interest in the development of Pullman Market, Pearl CEO Mesha Millsap notes, “I would say that part of [the draw] was Kevin's passion. When he came to Pearl and started looking at different places to open this business, they went into the Samuels Glass building, and he just fell in love with the space.”

“[It was] a perfect marriage of his idea, things we already had in mind, and the sustainability that we can bring to that space,” adds Millsap.

The 40,000-square-foot market was designed by Texas architecture firms Clayton Korte and Burton Baldridge along with interior design firm Joel Mozersky Design, showcasing Pearl’s history by preserving the shell of the structure, while lightly touching the space with new updated elements.

The space at the Pullman invites you to linger, to relax, to gather and enjoy delicious, high-quality but approachable food.

“If I was going to think of things that we really drew inspiration from, it's all those markets throughout Europe and Mexico that communities center around,” notes Fink. “That's really what we're trying to do in this space. We're trying to be a place where you meet up with your family and friends every weekend.”

THE RESTAURANTS

In addition to the grocery items, goods and

quick bites, the Pullman also features several restaurants on site. Fife & Farro specializes in handmade pasta and wood-fired pizzas. Mezquite highlights the cuisine of Sonora, Mexico, with a dedicated mezcal bar named Mezcaleria, offering buzzed-about beverages. At the time of our interview, two remaining restaurants were still forthcoming, Isidore and Nicosi. Isidore is designed for an elevated experience with a menu slated to change regularly in order to showcase the best ingredients of the season. Nicosi, created by celebrated Pastry Chef Tavel Bristol-Joseph, offers an intimate 20-seat dessertbar.

PLAN A VISIT

Plan a visit to Pullman Market at Pearl, and give yourself plenty of time to browse, sample, and really explore the many tastes of Texas while you’re there — knowing the motivation and drive behind this project comes with such enthusiasm.

“It's fun for me when people from all over are so excited to come here and have this Texas experience because it's one of the best places in the world,” shares Fink. “I’m so excited to empower that and continue to live that, and also show people who live here why we are so special.”

WHAT TO DO

SEE A SHOW AT STABLE HALL

Famously known for its live music scene, Austin has it all when it comes to top-notch performance venues, so when we were invited to check out this “new” live music venue in San Antonio, we weren’t initially clear why we’d be motivated to make the drive down Interstate 35 — until we stepped inside. “Ahhh, ohhh,” we marveled. “We get it now.” Stable Hall is truly as unique as they come.

Constructed in 1894 as the stable for the Pearl Brewery’s horses, the building is shaped as an oval with interesting and intricate Victorian brickwork. While the space has been used for various functions over the years, the latest reimagining of the building as a world-class music venue opened in January 2024, a perfect fit to engage The Pearl’s vibrant and growing community.

Austin-based architects Clayton Korte and interior design firm Joel Mozersky Design helped create an alluring atmosphere that honors the history of the building and features charming hand-painted murals and historic photographs adorning the walls.

Stable Hall evokes an old Texas dance hall, but with such modern amenities such as state-of-the-art acoustics and lighting design, along with a fabulously exquisite greenroom, all designed to woo not only concertgoers but top tier performers as well.

The venue is operated by Dallas-based entertainment company, WoodHouse, and WoodHouse Principal Brandt Wood shared his passion with us about this project, noting that it is “raising the bar,” and “adding to the radiance of re-introduction of Pearl 2.0.”

His passion for this project is quite apparent, and with more than three decades of experience in operating entertainment venues and music festivals, his exuberance piques our curiosity about what’s ahead for Stable Hall. A robust calendar of performances is on the horizon, with talks of festivals and more to come. Creative programming includes national and touring artists and regional musicians, and of course, shines a spotlight on San Antonio’s homegrown talent. stablehall.com

AFTER A NEARLY FIVE-YEAR HIATUS, THE ZILKER EAGLE MINI TRAIN RETURNS

Story and Photos by Cassie

THE ZILKER MINIATURE TRAIN HAS MADE A TRIUMPHANT return to Zilker Park. The train, which has been a staple in the park for decades, is once again delighting locals and visitors alike with its nostalgic charm and scenic rides.

Those who grew up in Austin likely have cherished childhood memories of warm days spent catching a breeze on the miniature train. The 20-minute journey around the park provides a fun activity for families as riders feel the wind in their hair and cheerfully wave to fellow park-goers.

Originally known as the Austin Eagle, the train’s legacy dates back to 1961 when a toy store owner joined forces with a railroad worker to create the first Zilker Park mini train. It quickly became a popular attraction, captivating generations of Austinites with its leisurely journeys through the park.

In 1985, lawyer Charlie Beall purchased the operation, and the new Ashley and Jenny trains were unveiled, each named after his daughters, with blue and green hues to match their respective eye colors. Charlie’s wife Carlene opened the souvenir shop and recruited students from the Texas School for the Deaf to paint murals inside the tunnel.

Beall’s two trains delighted passengers for more than a decade until a shift in ownership to Texas Special resulted in the train being renamed to

Ashley Beall, pictured below as a young child on the original Eagle, returned to be among the first to ride the new train.
“ ... to me, THE TRAIN IS THE number one activity FOR KIDS IN AUSTIN ”

Zilker Zephyr in the late 1990s.

However, in May 2019, heavy rains washed away some of the embankment supporting the tracks, resulting in a temporary closure. The repairs would have been too costly and complex for a small business to take on, which prompted the City Council to turn to the Austin Parks Foundation for assistance in fundraising and rebuilding.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of local enthusiasts, community leaders, and generous donors, the beloved train and its tracks were revitalized to embark on a new chapter in its storied history.

However, the process to restore it has not been straightforward. The APF researched mini train manufacturers and ultimately hired Phoenix-based company Railway Factory to build a new locomotive, six coaches, and new tracks and switches. Enhancements to the train, along with a vibrant rainbow mural adorning the tunnel under Barton Springs Road, as well as a wheelchair-accessible boarding platform, were added to improve the overall experience. A contest was held to choose a new name for the train, and the winning entry, the Zilker Eagle, pays homage to the amusement ride's

“I feel like everybody has a story about the FIRST TIME THEY RODE THE ZILKER EAGLE. People have these really cherished memories about it ... and we're just EXCITED TO BRING IT BACK.”

original name.

"The train at Zilker is a big deal," says Colin Wallis, CEO of the Austin Parks Foundation. "I feel like everybody has a story about the first time they rode the Zilker Eagle. People just have these really cherished memories about it. It's now been out of commission for almost 5 years, and we're just excited to bring it back."

Ashley Beall, daughter of previous train owners Charlie and Carlene Beall, reminisces on her own fond memories of growing up around the Zilker Eagle.

"My parents bought the train when I was 6 months old, so most of my childhood was there," shares Beall. "I remember sitting on a stool at the ticket booth window as a preschooler and exchanging cash for train tickets with my dad watching over me. My mom ran the souvenir shop in the train depot, and many of our birthday parties were at the pavilion next to the train tracks…I didn’t realize how cool and unique that was until I was older."

For the younger Beall and many other native Austinites, the Zilker miniature train holds a special place in their heart.

"I might be biased, but to me, the train is the number one activity for kids in Austin, and I feel sad that it’s been gone for five years, but so excited for this new chapter and for a new generation of kids to experience it, especially my nieces Charlotte and Sophie who are 5 and 3 years old,” explains Beall.

With a bright, shiny, new train and increased accessibility features, the Zilker Eagle is poised to create new memories for generations to come. The reopening of the Zilker Eagle not only brings joy to the community, but also signifies a commitment to preserving Austin's cultural heritage and iconic landmarks.

"We've really spent a lot of energy engaging and honoring the families and the people that brought it to us in the first place," says Wallis.

After completing its revitalization, the Zilker Eagle is ready to embark on a new chapter. Whether it's waving at passers by or sharing laughter with loved ones, the return of the Zilker Eagle marks a joyous occasion for the entire community to celebrate.

LAKESIDE LIVING + Unparalleled Luxury

THE ROCKCLIFF RESIDENCE OFFERS THE ULTIMATE CONNECTIVITY TO THE OUTDOORS FOR YEAR-ROUND ENJOYMENT ON LAKE AUSTIN

THE ROCKCLIFF RESIDENCE BY LARUE ARCHITECTS SITS ON A BEAUTIFUL, heavily-treed, private site that overlooks Lake Austin. A love of nature is showcased in every inch of the design of this serene 6,200-square-foot home as the site includes a lovely footpath that runs throughout the property and offers the feeling of being encompassed in nature for both the homeowners and their precious dogs, who enjoy roaming freely throughout the peaceful grounds. The homeowners, who both have a deep appreciation for the outdoors, were incredibly involved in the design process and helped to ensure that the home was lake-oriented in every way. From the retractable, screened-in porch to the stunning glass doors on both sides of the home, and the boat dock with plenty of outdoor games — this home exudes warmth, modernity, and fun.

A gate at the front of the property leads to a meandering driveway that weaves beautifully between groves of oak trees, including a magnificent 33-foot tree that serves as a stunning welcoming statement. The LaRue team considered the placement of the home to emphasize the shape of the lot and to maximize views of the lake, while creating inward privacy.

ARCHITECTURE:

LaRue Architects;

James LaRue AIA, Principal

“With the luxury of having such a deep lot, we were able to locate the house as close to the lake as governed, while creating a long experiential procession leading up to the home upon entering the site,” says James LaRue, founder and principal of LaRue Architects. “When we are presented with the opportunity to design a home on a lakeside lot, our primary goal is to establish a strong connection between the house and lake, with the outdoor living area and pool in between the two being just as important spaces as any interior square footage.”

LaRue specifically designed the shape of the pool as an extension of the architecture, matching the same angle of the home. Design Ecology detailed the specifics of the infinity edge pool and catch basin.

The home itself is a master class in design. “The roof hovers above the two-story home and mimics the massing of the floor plan below, while the long fascia establishes a horizontal datum that creates a warm weight to the building,” explains LaRue. The material palette is earthy and regional, with wood

and stone driving the design, while more contemporary elements like metal panels on the upper floor and a smooth plaster soffit infer a contemporary edge. This contrast of materials creates the perfect ambiance for this lakeside retreat, offering the unexpected, yet flawless integration of a cabin-like charm with a modern aesthetic.

Upon entering the front courtyard, the transparency of the home allows for breathtaking lakeside views. Adjacent to this entry procession is a large lawn that follows the angle of the home and serves as a perfect place for outdoor activities. The entry courtyard features a series of cut Lueders limestone that lead to the front door. The main living area features a glass core providing uninterrupted sweeping lake vistas from every vantage point. Twelve-foot-tall sliding glass doors open to a large covered outdoor living area, once again effortlessly merging the indoors with the outdoors and providing the ultimate entertaining space.

To the left of the main living and foyer is a guest bedroom, and on the upper floor are two bedrooms and a loft. The home is primarily one-story, as LaRue prefers to design houses that are “long and low and horizontal in nature.”

The bedrooms are placed parallel to the property line and are designed to buffer the adjacent home and create height to provide inward privacy for the homeowners. The primary suite is placed near the opposite side property line, situated with a view to the pool and lake and has access to a floating cantilevered patio via a sliding glass door. The primary bath is casual, yet beautiful, and spa-like with natural materials such as stone and wood being implemented to create another connection with nature and the outdoors. The tub is organically carved stone and sits on a river rock base, creating a tranquil aesthetic.

With each detail of design being thoughtfully curated to embody a serene Lakeside retreat, The Rockcliff residence proves to be the ultimate in outdoor living meets unparalleled luxury.

Small Seeds, BIG CHANGES

DR. BARAAH ATTAL’S EASTERN MEDICINE PRACTICE UTILIZES THE ANCIENT ART OF EAR SEEDING

In a city known for its blend of innovation and tradition, Dr. Baraah Attal shines as a guiding light in the realm of holistic healing. Drawing from a rich background in both Eastern and Western medicines, Attal effortlessly melds ancient wisdom with contemporary approaches at her practice, Eashab Wellness, providing her patients with a distinctive journey towards well-being.

A practitioner of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, Attal holds a doctorate from the AOMA Graduate School of Integrative Medicine, along with a bachelor's degree in Human Nutrition and Foods. Her journey into the realm of holistic healing began with a passion for helping others, initially leading her down the path of traditional pharmacy. However, she soon realized her motivation was to become a healer in a different capacity, one that embraced the holistic approach of her upbringing.

"I wanted to be more of a healer in a different way," explains Attal. "Integrating Eastern and Western medicine was a calling."

Dr. Baraah Attal Photographed by Sandra Dehdah

“Integrating EASTERN and WESTERN MEDICINE was a calling ”

Growing up, Attal was surrounded by the belief that food is medicine, instilled in her by her mother and grandmother. Attal found herself creating herbal teas and concoctions for sleep, immunity, and digestion based on what she learned from her family and selling them in farmers’ markets. This foundation, coupled with her education, fueled her desire to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western medical practices. Eventually, she made the leap to AOMA, earned her doctorate, and started her practice.

One of the hallmark services offered by Attal is ear seeding, a practice deeply rooted in traditional Chinese medicine. Similar to reflexology for the feet, ear seeding involves the strategic placement of small beads on specific points of the ear to stimulate various bodily functions. Attal's approach adds a touch of elegance to this ancient practice, using shiny beads that resemble jewelry, making it both therapeutic and aesthetically pleasing.

"Ear seeds are a conversation starter and really pretty little beads,” says Attal. “They look like piercings, but they're good for your health."

In addition to ear seeding, Attal offers cupping therapy, lifestyle medicine recommendations and, in 2025, she will offer acupuncture. Her journey from crafting herbal teas to providing clinical services reflects her evolution as a practitioner, constantly adapting to meet the diverse needs of her community.

Attal's commitment to accessibility and inclusivity is evident in her presence at pop-up wellness events across Austin. She believes in bringing wellness to all spaces, not just medical offices, making it approachable and engaging for everyone. Her heart-shaped cupping sessions are a testament to her creativity and desire to introduce traditional Chinese medicine to new audiences.

At the heart of Attal's practice lies her dedication to community wellness. She is not only a practitioner, but also an active member of various initiatives, including her role on the Board for the Center of Child Protection, a nonprofit dedicated to aiding abused children. Through her involvement, she fundraises and hosts educational events, emphasizing the importance of community dialogue in preventing such tragedies.

Working out of Dr. Brooke Stubb's Rooted Femme medical clinic, Attal continues to promote integrative medicine, collaborating with Western practitioners to offer comprehensive care to her patients. She emphasizes the importance of communication between patients and their healthcare providers, particularly when incorporating herbal remedies into treatment plans.

With a forthcoming herbal project and partnerships with Austin Recovery, Attal continues her mission to make wellness accessible to all. Her journey symbolizes a bridge between worlds, ushering in a new era of integrative medicine.

Exploring the Journey to Motherhood

From starting a business to starting a family, Austin influencer
Amanda Nelson brings mindfulness to every endeavor

Infertility has been on the rise in recent decades, now with approximately one in six people of reproductive age experiencing infertility worldwide. We all know someone affected, but talking about it can still be taboo, a shame for those who might feel alone in their struggle. However, that’s changing, in part due to celebrities and influencers sharing their experiences publicly.

One local influencer doing just that is Amanda Nelson. Her journey, along with countless others, took a turn during the COVID pandemic. She had been working as an event producer, but was furloughed when large events were paused indefinitely. Knowing she wanted to own her own company, she decided to use that time to slow down and consider what she wanted her own entrepreneurial venture to be. Before being widely known on social media as

“Exploring Amanda,” Amanda and her husband spent the entire month of April 2020 on South Padre Island. This is when she started feeling called to share her life unapologetically online — she now has over half a million followers on TikTok. After allowing herself space to clear her head and contemplate her values, she came away with the idea for her wellness company, 60 Days Away, which provides tools like guided journals and mindfulness cards to help people on their journey towards the best versions of themselves.

Soon after, she and her husband of more than a decade decided they were both ready to start a family. They had gone back and forth over the years on whether or not kids were in their future, and this time, it was Amanda’s husband leading the charge on making it happen.

“It took many conversations before we were

both in agreement,” says Amanda. “I was a little bit more hesitant because I wanted to make sure that I still had the integrity of who I was. I really value independence in everything that I do, and so my fear was becoming one of those moms who loses themselves when their kids move out because that’s all they’ve ever known.”

From the start, Amanda was clear about what she needed to maintain her sense of self. When they were both on the same page, they were excited to start trying to conceive. Six months went by, and nothing happened, so they started getting more serious about tracking ovulation. Another year went by with no positive results, so the couple went to a fertility specialist, who deemed them to be in the “infertile category.”

The specialist left them with little hope outside of in vitro fertilization and intrauterine in-

semination, so Amanda, then 32, decided to take things into her own hands.

“We realized we needed to crack down on making some lifestyle changes,” she explains. “We went really hard on figuring out what we could do on our own to take back a little bit of power and try to be in control of something that we really aren't in control of.”

Over the next three months, Amanda and her husband examined everything they put in and on their bodies, removing any toxic culprits. They installed a reverse osmosis water filtration system, removed all plastic and Teflon in the kitchen, and prioritized protein in their diets. They also cut out processed food and minimized alcohol.

At this time, she had only shared their troubles with a few close friends. “Infertility is such an emotional thing to go through,”

says Amanda. “It's very lonely.”

However, they stuck to the new habits and tried to stay optimistic, and two weeks before their scheduled IUI, Amanda got pregnant without medical intervention, which she doesn’t think would have been possible without the lifestyle changes she and her husband implemented. The news of their healthy baby boy in utero felt like a lost dream come true.

Since getting pregnant, she opened up on social media about the difficulties she faced. At the end of her first trimester, she was diagnosed with an extreme case of symphysis pubis dysfunction, a painful condition that made the rest of her pregnancy difficult, especially when it came to staying active. The pain was so debilitating that they’ve decided that if they have more children, it will be through surrogacy or adoption.

WHEN IT COMES to conception, pregnancy, and motherhood, EVERYONE’S EXPERIENCES are DIFFERENT.
Follow Amanda Nelson on social media : @ExploringAmanda

Amanda gave birth to August Fox Nelson in early May. “It was all worth it,” says Amanda. “Words can’t describe how happy I am to have gone through all the hard times that got me here, with my baby in my arms and my heart so, so full. I didn’t know how much being his mom would mean to me.”

Amanda and her husband are looking forward to living life and traveling with August, all while setting a good example for a healthy marriage. Her story of getting pregnant after being placed in the infertile category and then the

subsequent struggles she dealt with during pregnancy have resonated with many women dealing with similar issues.

When it comes to conception, pregnancy, and motherhood, everyone’s experiences are different. Oftentimes, social media fails to effectively portray the full spectrum of what these experiences can entail. Amanda hopes that by sharing the raw highs and lows of her own experience, others might feel less alone in their own journeys to motherhood.

MOM on a MISSION

WHEN TARA MIKO BALLENTINE COULDN’T FIND TOOLS TO AID IN TOUGH CONVERSATIONS WITH HER YOUNG DAUGHTER, SHE MADE THEM HERSELF

WHEN THE COVID PANDEMIC HIT, TARA MIKO BALLENTINE was raising her four-year-old daughter, Poppy, and working in Austin’s hospitality industry. Overnight, her life turned upside down.

“I lost every single client [of my marketing agency] within about 24 hours,” she recalls. “At the same time, I gained my daughter being at home full-time. There were a lot of emotions that she and I were both having with everything she ever knew being ripped away from her.”

Not only did Poppy lose access to school, but she also lost the opportunity to see her Australian grandparents in person, a situation that persisted for more than three years. This time of uncertainty forced Ballentine to reconsider her career and parenting style, especially when supporting her daughter.

“I was trying to solve my own problem of having conversations with my daughter and meeting her where she was,” explains Ballentine. “Specifically, at the time, I wanted to talk to her about feelings, but I couldn’t find any

age-appropriate tools to help me.”

Without the tools she was looking for, she decided to create them herself. Tara launched Bright Littles at the beginning of 2022. The first product was a deck of conversation cards that held 100 intriguing questions and 25 activities on safety, nature, health, diversity, and self. The cards can ignite short yet powerful conversations in the car or at the dinner table, allowing parents to connect with their children over meaningful dialogues.

She later self-published four journals diving into safety, feelings, leadership, and digital citizenship. Guided activities and games make interactive learning easy, with indications of when caregivers are meant to step in and reward badges for kids to stay engaged. The prompts and activities have been researched and validated by child therapists, experts with PhDs, community leaders, parents, and, of course, kids.

While feedback has been generally positive, especially from parents who were facing similar challenges engaging with their kids in a rapidly changing world, some retailers have pushed back on specific questions, especially those around gun safety, different religions, and the LGBTQI+ community. Ballentine has strongly refused to remove these topics, recognizing the importance of having open dialogue with children about what they face in today’s world.

“My goal is to wrap my arms around you with our products and to make all families feel welcome here,” she says.

Some retailers have declined to carry Bright Littles because they feel those topics are too controversial. However, museums and local shops like The Herb Bar have been supportive. She recently started selling on Amazon, where busy parents primarily shop, plus Bright Littles has been featured in CNN, Reader’s Digest, and Glamour.

With the world that the internet and social media have opened up for kids growing up today, it’s more important than ever that parents help young people understand how to interpret and process their feelings about complex topics.

“I say this is my love note to my daughter, but honestly, it's my love note to myself,” says Ballentine. “I believe if I had been prepared with these conversations growing up, I would have stood up for myself more when mistreated. I have this opportunity to build a bridge — to be different and better for my daughter.”

Finding Family in Breakthrough T1D

FROM DIAGNOSIS TO DAILY LIFE WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES

WHEN MEASON BAKUNAS WAS diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 6 years old, his parents, Greg and Emily, were thrust into a world they knew little about. Type 1 is a lifelong condition where the pancreas produces little or no insulin, leading to high blood sugar levels, and it requires constant vigilance to manage. The initial days were daunting.

“Chasing around your 6-year-old with a shot multiple times a day? Awful,” recalls Emily, vividly remembering her sleepless nights checking on Meason, worried his blood sugar levels might drop too low, which could result in seizures, unconsciousness, or even death. The challenges were compounded by Meason’s young age. “It was hard to measure [blood sugar levels]. Sometimes, kids don’t finish everything on the plate, and that can complicate things,” explains Emily.

Despite these obstacles, the Bakunas family embraced their new reality with resilience.

Emily quickly connected with the Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF), and instantly found a community. Now, a few years later, Emily sits on the Board of Directors and reaches out to those who were once in her previous position.

“We’re very involved,” states Emily. “Meason is an ambassador, and my husband ends up being involved just as much as we are.”

Breakthrough T1D has been a lifeline for the Bakunas family who participates in fundraising events, parties, and even family dinners.

“Day-to-day, they help our family in so many ways,” she notes. These subtle interactions create a sense of community and offer individuals of all ages a space to connect, relate, and draw comfort from one another's shared journey.

From Facebook groups to text chains, members of the Breakthrough T1D family can ask questions, share stories, and even lend medical devices to each other at a moment’s notice. This support system has been vital in helping navigate the complexities of diabetes management.

Meason, now much older, handles his condition with remarkable maturity and positivity.

“The good thing about Meason is that he owns it and is not embarrassed about it,” says Emily proudly. “He enjoys being different.”

Managing Meason’s levels remains a constant effort, but he’s always in communication with his parents to keep it in check, and he wears a Dexcom device to monitor his levels throughout the day.

“He has to think about what he’s going to eat and when he’s going to eat it,” explains Emily. Despite these restrictions, the Bakunas family has found a silver lining. “We are super tight,” she adds. “I don’t know that I would ever have had this relationship with my child. We were together so much for so long, and I thank God he still likes me.”

For families newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, Emily offers reassurance. “There are a whole bunch of people going through exactly what they’re going through, and that’s the most important thing to know. They’re not alone.”

It is important to consider the subject of wellness as a holistic one - the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of being.

ACHIEVING Holistic Health

Advice on life and love from Kristin Armstrong

Dear Kristin,

What are your favorite ways to exercise and stay healthy? In addition to meditation, what else do you find grounding and calming? Have you tried any wellness modalities that you have made part of your regular routine?

ical assessment is a great place to begin.

I’m so happy to hear from you about wellness, one of my favorite subjects, for good reason. If we aren’t healthy, it doesn’t really matter what our other life goals are because we can’t accomplish them or enjoy the journey towards them.

It is important to consider the subject of wellness as a holistic one — the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of being. Most people look at physical health and overlook the rest, then wonder why they still don’t feel better. I will respond to your question by addressing each of these essential areas.

Before you embark on any new physical health plan, it is so important to see your doctor, not just to make sure you can safely push yourself with exercise, but to get an overall picture of the health of your body. This means getting a panel of bloodwork to check your thyroid and other hormone levels, your bone density, your cortisol levels, and get a heart scan, etc. If your results are off, you may work very diligently on your fitness, good sleep, and nutrition habits and notice zero results, which would be totally disheartening. A complete phys-

My favorite exercises include running, trail running, hiking, walking, yoga, and lifting weights. It is important to combine cardio exercise with strength training, so we don’t lose muscle in an effort to lose pounds. The simplest nutrition advice is — eat more protein, drink less alcohol, and drink more water. The simplest fitness advice is to move your body — do something you love. If you love it, you will feel like you “get to” do it rather than “have to” do it. That makes all the difference in the world in terms of consistency.

Mental health is all about mindset. Do you feel positive, hopeful, and excited about your life? Are you working with a therapist or coach? Are you learning new things? Are you actively rewiring limiting beliefs? Are you feeling open and creative? Do you feel a sense of purpose and meaning?

Emotional health is all about the heart. Do you feel open and connected to your emotions? Do you feel regulated more often than dysregulated? Do you feel a sense of safety, belonging, and connection in your relationships? Do you love yourself and let others love you?

Spiritual health is all about alignment. Do you feel connected to a source bigger than yourself? Do you feel able to access peace or wisdom when you need it? What are the practices that make you feel aligned, centered, and grounded?

Meditation, time in nature, somatic breathwork, cold plunges, yoga, journaling, mindfulness, gratitude practices, intentions, affirmations, and prayer are excellent practices for creating spiritual alignment. I am a huge

believer in the power of energy, as it is the essence of everything from physical form to thought. Energy work by a Reiki practitioner can help unblock stuck energy and open us to new insights and possibilities. By attending to elements in each of the areas of being, we can create powerful momentum for transformation and optimized wellness. All of these areas work together systemically, in synchronicity and wholeness. Hopefully, this will help you conceptualize your best path to feeling exactly how you want to feel, in your being and in your life.

With so much love, Kristin

Set on 15 acres with stunning views of the Davis Mountains, Blue Mountain, Puertacitas, and Haystack Mountain, the hacienda complex is shielded by adobe walls and accessed via architectural steel gates. The main house, a passive solar soft contemporary design built in 2006 from lime-stabilized adobe, features four (potentially five) bedrooms and five full baths. It boasts lime plaster walls, exposed wood beams, Douglas Fir vigas, wood ceilings, and stained concrete floors, heating from a Rumford fireplace and a Rockport wood stove. The house includes a suite with a library, dining area, full kitchen, walk-in pantry, living room, and a spacious entry hall with clerestory windows. Two casitas, completed in 2021, offer additional bedrooms, full baths, and modern amenities, with views of Marfa and Haystack Mountain. The property is part of the Antelope Hills Subdivision, allowing short-term rentals.
