The Soho House Austin team gathers for a holiday soirée.
Iam tremendously excited that the season of sparkle is upon us, and I am even more delighted that this time of year presents many opportunities to gather with the people we adore. From a dizzy dazzle of holiday parties to cherished meals shared with loved ones in moments of joy and gratitude, this season offers a true celebration of community. What a perfect time to reveal The People Issue.
In a city overflowing with intriguing creators, givers, creative spirits and Austinites with boundless talents, it was both a true honor and quite the challenge to assemble this year’s curation of individuals to spotlight in this issue.
We were thrilled to chat with Micah Nelson, the youngest son of legendary hometown hero Willie Nelson, regarding his work on the release of Willie’s 76th solo studio album. We caught up with other beloved local musicians Eric Burton and Adrian Quesada, of Black Pumas, to learn more about life on their recent tour. We took a happy jaunt through the garden with social media sensation Matthew Gaston to discuss his love of plant education. We visited the East Austin Jiujitsu Parlor with co-owner/actor Zane Holtz, who shared insights about balancing work on the big screen and on the mat. We dug into scrumptious pastries with the effortlessly cool baker Amanda Rockman. We got the inside scoop about Sabrina Carpenter’s glowing skin from renowned esthetician Renée Rouleau. We were treated to a preview of artist Dawn Okoro’s new work at Houston’s Meow Wolf. We also spoke about the social responsibility that comes with being in the spotlight with Austin FC goalkeeper Brad Stuver and his wife Ashley. Lastly, we found a spark of seasonal magic in conversation with a duo known as Santa and Mrs. Claus.
In moments of sheer revelry, we had a ball picking out festive holiday fashion along Music Lane at Nak Armstrong's flagship store, as well as at FRAME and alice + olivia for a bubbly photoshoot modeled by the team at Soho House Austin.
In this issue, you’ll also discover an abundance of holiday gift ideas as well as experiences to savor this season, such as enjoying an afternoon tea service in some of Austin prettiest alcoves.
I truly hope you enjoy reading this issue as you get to peek into the lives of some individuals that help make Austin so extraordinary.
Cheers to a wonderful season!

Black Pumas
BY
CHRISTINA GARCIA PHOTOGRAPHS BY JODY DOMINGUE
As Quiet Mystics
Austin's Black Pumas' studio sessions must feel like stepping into an otherworldly musical journey. Orbiting Earth on a fuel of rock and soul, singer and songwriter Eric Burton has become something of a mystic, while producer and multi-instrumentalist Adrian Quesada is more like a wizard in a creative frenzy. Happy to have a grounded moment in Austin before they head out on their fall world tour, the musicians share what matters now, what keeps them sane and why returning home before the holidays brings them joy.
TThe Mystic
On stage and off, Burton commands attention with the beauty in his voice. His phrasing, and perhaps delivery, were shaped by the church.
“At an early age, I was encouraged to see myself as something of a reflection of the most high, and I think that’s really stuck with me,” explains Burton. “So, I'm always kind of seeking that.” In seeking, he finds spiritual sustenance. He speaks of abundant love and peace, meditation and energetic engagements, even making a recent Uber ride over seem like a blessing.
“It’s been a moment since I sat with someone … and felt compelled to be really open,” he says. Maybe it was the music.
Burton says he and the driver listened to Johnnie Frierson’s “Miracles” in the car.
“We listened to Pastor T.L. Barrett, ‘Like a Ship Without a Sail,’ and ‘Nobody Knows,’” explains Burton. “We listened to ‘It’ll All Be Over’ by the Supreme Jubilees.”
These songs crucially bypass preachiness and dogma, which matters to Burton, but so does the link to something deeper.
“I love that music because it inspires me, because it makes me feel like I'm close to home,” says the artist.
At home, Burton’s older sister often saw greatness in him, “speaking prophetically,” as Burton describes it. Once he was able to roam, Burton busked down the West Coast and beyond with friends. Landing in Austin and connecting with Adrian Quesada was unplanned, but after the release of their eponymous 2019 debut album and their 2023 sophomore follow-up, “Chronicles of a Diamond,” the albums were nominated for a total of seven Grammy awards.
For Burton, friendships and natural rapport have solidified as a priority in making collaborative art. Perhaps, the ability of he and Quesada to support one another as they became rock stars made it so.
Burton’s new musical network includes R.C. Williams, music director for Erykah Badu. He also describes newly opened doors that allow him “to see what it would feel like to potentially co-write for an upcoming artist who might do similar music,” as he shares that he is preparing material.
The Wizard’s Way
If Burton is a mystic, Quesada is a seasoned musician and production-wizard, casting spells not only in Black Pumas, but also with the Grammy-award winning Grupo Fantasma. Further musical magic is evident in his past
work with Latin groups such as Brownout, Ocote Soul Sounds and Money Chicha. As owner of Electric Deluxe, a recording and production studio, he has also produced heavy-metal band The Sword, and he continues to work alongside artists like Suzanna Choffel and Angelica Garcia. His work as The Echocentrics and on many tracks from Jaguar Sound prove Quesada’s ability to groove solo, but collaboration has served him well and continues to anchor him.
On tour, Quesada and Burton “are always working on new music together and individually, and even lately, jamming at soundchecks and recording ideas,” shares Quesada.
A band of talented artists surrounds them in Black Pumas, sharing their own creative works-in-progress. They include JaRon Marshall (keys), Stephen Bidwell (drums), Lauren Cervantes (vocals), Angela Miller (vocals), Terin Ector (percussion) and Brendan Bond (bass). For Burton and Quesada, constantly writing music helps them stay sane, and in more ways than one, it’s a group effort.
Mindful Practice
For 15 minutes before each show, Black Pumas listen to a guided meditation together.
“The nightly band meditation has been amazing for us, even if it's short,” says Quesada. “I feel it's made us a better group.”
“I think that when we sit and we meditate in that way it’s really easy to kind of be transported to a place where there is that abundance,” states Burton. “There is an abundance of love and peace for anyone.” No one person created the ritual, he adds. Instead, it seemed to happen organically with all band members signaling interest in the practice.
Style that Binds
And then, there’s shopping. Burton loves cumbia and buying hard to find records as he tours.
“I was raised in California where the community is very Latin, so this is part of the soundtrack to my childhood,” says Burton. Samba and flamenco are also favorites.
As for clothes, Burton now calls Gucci, Chanel, Bottega Veneta and AllSaints his favorite shops. In Austin, he loves ByGeorge. Burton often skips packing clothes when on tour to shop before each show.
“It makes me feel good to look good and to discover history and culture in the shapes and the aesthetic of some
of these designs, the way different stores kind of heed back to certain [decades],” he says. Exploring people and places brings the band joy as well. The band leaders adore Spain, and Burton admires the deep reverence he noticed in the Berlin crowds.
“It's usually the smaller city … that shows us the most love,” says Quesada, standing up for small cities as well. ”The fact that we get to do this around the world is not something I'll ever take for granted.”
Holiday Traditions
If abundant love and joy is a theme, it’s one Burton and Quesada both understand through keeping their family-ties strong.
“My wife, kids and I always make an effort to get out for a walk in nature during the holidays,” says Quesada. “So much time is spent with family gatherings that being outdoors always provides a nice reset.”
Burton likewise counts on celebrating with his family, as he always did growing up.
“Myself and my siblings, my aunts, cousins. We would do everything together,” says Burton.
“That’s something that’s really important for us. Because [the band is] family-oriented, there’s a kindred spirit in all of us to support each other as well so that’s kind of how [the band] stays sane,” he said.
With founding members so grounded in creative partnerships, there’s sure to be more from the mystic and the wizard that remains to be seen.

CURATING CREATIVITY & CONNECTION AT SOHO HOUSE AUSTIN
BY NICOLE WILLIAMS-QUEZADA
As the sun dips below the Austin skyline, casting a warm glow across the wraparound terrace of Soho House, the gentle clinking of cocktail glasses mingles with the hum of animated conversation. This is not just another exclusive club — it's a careful curation of Austin's creative spirit.
Located along the bustle of South Congress Avenue, Soho House Austin is a testament to the city's evolving cultural landscape. This members-only enclave has quickly become a place where Austin's cultural architects intermingle with the new faces that are shaping the city’s future.
"We're a diverse community made up of different backgrounds in the creative world," explains Erin Hosler, the
House’s general manager. This diversity is by design, echoing the vision of Soho House founder Nick Jones, who sought to create spaces for those in "not so traditional roles.”
The House itself is a marvel of design, spanning three floors with amenities that would make any luxury hotel envious, but as Membership Manager Gabby Rodriguez notes, "becoming a member means more than just gaining access to a space — you become part of a network of creatives from every industry and background."
What truly sets Soho House Austin apart is its commitment to fostering genuine connections.
“Our team puts a lot of effort into making sure our space is inclusive and welcoming,” says Jess Schoenholtz, Head of Membership. This ethos is reflected in the curated experiences orchestrated by Cameron Choate, Head of Events, who blends Austin’s local flavor with global perspectives. From intimate music performances to thought-provoking workshops, the programming constantly pushes creative boundaries whilst maintaining an inclusive atmosphere.
Soho House Austin is committed to continuous growth, which includes the promotion of racial diversity.
"We're doing the work to get there," emphasizes AV/ IT Manager Chip Belton.
This honesty and commitment to growth transform Soho House from a mere club into a living entity that evolves with its members and the city itself.
In Austin, a city that prides itself on "keeping it weird," Soho House manages to surprise even the city's true locals. It's a place where, as Choate puts it, you can "get weird, surprise people, do things that people would never think would be at Soho House." In doing so, it's fostering a community as vibrant, engaging and curious as Austin itself — one cocktail, conversation and connection at a time.

AFROM OPENING THE EAST AUSTIN JIUJITSU PARLOR TO STARRING ON THE BIG SCREEN, ZANE HOLTZ EMBRACES A FALL FULL OF ACTION
ctor Zane Holtz, famous for his roles in "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series," “Hypnotic,” “Walker,” and "Riverdale," has kicked off a new adventure in the capital city.
While filming "From Dusk Till Dawn" around town, Holtz was captivated by Austin's unique blend of creativity, community, and outdoor lifestyle. He fell head over heels for
so I had been training in some type of martial arts since I was six."
His training continued after moving to California, where he discovered Brazilian jiujitsu and studied under Marcelo Cavalcanti at a boxing gym in Hermosa Beach. The initial intrigue blossomed into a lifelong passion, culminating in Holtz earning his black belt in 2019.
acknowledges Holtz, "So ....we want to ensure everyone has an opportunity to safely join the sport and become part of the community.
Beyond jiujitsu, the gym provides a holistic approach to wellness. It features free weights, strength and conditioning classes, a steam room, and physical therapy and training by McEachern, a purple belt in jiujitsu, former U.S. Marine, ex-Olympic weightlifter, and a Doctor of Physical Therapy. The goal is to bridge the gap between a jiujitsu gym and a health club, where members actually want to hang out before or after classes. With abundant natural light, an industrial-chic aesthetic, and a vibrant
Austin’s irresistible vibe and decided to make it his family's forever home. The decision to relocate his family here was easy, he says, and it's a choice that has profoundly shaped his life both personally and professionally.
Holtz isn’t just an action star on screen — he’s also a Brazilian jiujitsu black belt and now co-owner of East Austin Jiu-Jitsu Parlor, where he's rolling into a whole new chapter both on and off the mat.
The actor’s martial arts journey began in his childhood in Canada, where indoor activities were a necessity due to the harsh weather.
"It's very popular in Canada,"explains Holtz. "Because there's such adverse weather for the majority of the year, any indoor activity really catches on,
by DARCIE DUTTWEILER
"I had this realization, ‘Am I done?’ Or is it just the start of another journey with the art?" says Holtz. "I almost immediately felt I wanted to take on the responsibility to teach."
Following the closure of his longtime spot, Dark Clan Fight Lab, this newfound sense of responsibilityinspired Holtz —and his partners Vince Barbosa, William Watts, Dave Haas, Jon Thibeault, and Dr. Sean McEachern — to open East Austin Jiujitsu Parlor in August. The gym offers a comprehensive range of classes, including gi and no-gi jiujitsu, catering to practitioners of all levels.

neon sign, East Austin Jiujitsu Parlor exudes a welcoming and social atmosphere. The gym's elevated ambiance is a refreshing departure from the typical jiujitsu setting.
Holtz's vision for the gym extends beyond providing a space for physical fitness — he sees it as a community asset. The gym offers discounted memberships to first responders, teachers, and students, reflecting Holtz's commitment to giving back to the city he
now calls home. In 2025, the parlor will collaborate with Nate Boyer's non-profit organization, Merging Vets & Players. This partnership aims to unite combat veterans with former professional athletes in workout sessions conducted at various fitness facilities.
While Holtz continues to pursue his acting career, with the upcoming erotic thriller “Love Bomb” set to premiere Nov. 8 and an episode in the second season of the crime anthology series “Accused” co-starring Ken Jeong and directed by Michael Chiklis. He's also developing projects as a producer, including an equity film that he hopes to shoot in Austin, but his focus remains on his family and his burgeoning gym.
"If I had a magic wand," says Holtz, "I'd figure out another show that could shoot here in Austin and make it all around easier on my life, my family, and my new business."
With its inviting atmosphere, expert instruction, and commitment to community, East Austin Jiujitsu Parlor is set to become a cherished destination for jiujitsu enthusiasts and fitness seekers alike. For Holtz, it represents the fulfillment of a dream to share his passion for jiujitsu with the city that has captured his heart.
"Really and truly, we're trying to be an asset and provide services to the community," says Holtz.

THE "DAZED AND CONFUSED" CAST'S FAR-OUT 30TH
ANNIVERSARY AUSTIN REUNION
by CASSIE BUTTERFIELD
F
ANS AND CAST MEMBERS OF THE CULT CLASSIC
"Dazed and Confused" flocked to celebrate the film's 30th anniversary at Austin’s historic Paramount Theatre on September 28. The iconic 1993 coming-of-age film, directed by Austin native Richard Linklater, achieved cult status over the years and continues to resonate with audiences.
The sold-out event, presented by the Austin Film Society and Focus Features, was a trip down memory lane featuring a red carpet with director Richard Linklater and 15 cast members, a special screening and a Q&A session reminiscent of a high school reunion.
Filmed in Austin during the summer of 1992, many of the movie’s iconic locations—such as Top Notch on Burnet Road and the Moontower party site at Walter E. Long Metropolitan Park— still hold a special place in locals' hearts.
During the Q&A, cast members reminisced about their time on set, with Wiley Wiggins sharing a humorous story about lying about his baseball skills to land the role of Mitch Kramer. Michelle Thomas, who played Jodi Kramer, described the reunion as “wonderful, joyous, and heartbreaking,” capturing the bittersweet emotions of seeing everyone together again after all these years.
Linklater, who grew up in Huntsville, Texas, originally set out to make “Dazed and Confused” an anti-nostalgia film, aiming to showcase the
less romanticized aspects of adolescence. Yet, audiences fell in love with the movie’s celebration of muscle cars, classic rock anthems, hazy nights of partying, and late-night drives, inadvertently sparking a 1970s nostalgia wave. Reflecting on his original intent, Linklater shared, “I was just trying to capture some kind of moment in time, some kind of energy, some kind of realism.”
The film introduced Hollywood to future megastars like Matthew McConaughey (who blessed us with his now-legendary line, “Alright, alright, alright”), Ben Affleck, and Parker Posey. Even three decades later, the Dazed phenomenon continues, as new generations of fans discover the film's magic. The reunion sold out in just five minutes—a testament to the enduring love for this timeless Austin-made masterpiece.

It plays its part by connecting people with opportunities to get involved. One of those efforts is the XOXO Downtown Austin campaign.
XOXO Downtown Austin is a campaign to reunite Austinites and the downtown neighborhood of the city. Through a series of six-week XOXO Photography Fellowships, which started at the end of September, local up-and-coming photographers receive mentorship and use their unique perspective and photography skills to capture iconic scenes around downtown. Then, their photos are used throughout the XOXO Downtown Austin campaign to showcase the best the city has to offer through its vibrant, beloved culture.
The XOXO Photography Fellowship 2024 participants are:
Ish Quintanilla
Naya Montufar (Naya Papaya)
Isabelle Milford
Sabine Fletcher
Russel Crawford
Eric Duong
The 2024 XOXO Photography Fellowship Mentors include:

HOW
AUSTIN ARTIST DAWN OKORO PAINTED HER WAY TO INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS
When artist Dawn Okoro was a young girl growing up in Lubbock, Texas, she leafed through the pages of “Ebony" and “Jet” magazines, inspired by the glamorous shots of Black models wearing the latest runway fashions. She started sketching her own fashion-forward world and longed to be an artist, but her family didn’t travel much, and she had no real-life examples to follow. She remembers sitting on the floor of her Austin apartment as a young adult, making art while devouring every episode of "Sex and the City.”
Even well into her 30s, through decades of school and day jobs, Okoro had no idea her

paintings would one day be featured on “And Just Like That,” grace the pages of some of the magazines she once worshiped, and be included in the permanent installation of Meow Wolf Houston.
“It’s sometimes surreal,” says Okoro. “I think back on myself as a little girl or a teenager, and think, ’Wow, this is something that I wanted, but I couldn't really fully visualize that when I was younger.’”
Growing up, Okoro’s family encouraged her to pursue a sensible, sustainable career, so she went to college at the University of Texas at Austin, then earned a law degree at Texas Southern
University. Later, she worked as a journalist. Even though she never stopped making her vivid, chromatic paintings, it was challenging to keep her dream of being an artist alive.
“I had dabbled in pursuing art throughout that time, but I became frustrated with the hustle of trying to have an art career,” says Okoro. “So, at one point, I just gave up and decided, I'm just not going to do art anymore. I'm going to focus on my nine-to-five, and that'll be that.”
Several years passed, paintbrush down, before she experienced a deep grief that shook up her world when both her biological father and stepfather passed away in quick succession.
“It makes you wake up and realize that life really is short,” she explains. “We don't know how much time we have left, so we might as well live it to the fullest. That inspired me to start to get back into art.”
Around 2016, after working full days as a journalist at Spectrum News Austin, she’d pick up her paintbrush whenever she had the energy. She wanted to quit, but she had bills to pay. Then, things finally started to change.
“A turning point for me was my 'Punk Noir' solo exhibition [in 2018] here in Austin at the Carver Museum,” says Okoro. “I was able to get a little bit of recognition from some national publications and definitely recognition here locally.”
“Punk Noir” centered the revolutionary spirit of the Afropunk and Afro-futurism movements. Drawing on the artistic styles of Barkley L. Hendricks and Andy Warhol, as well as the adinkra symbols of her Nigerian Igbo heritage, Okoro painted portraits of Black creatives against backgrounds of loud, joyous color, often dancing or showcasing their style — Okoro likes to begin by photographing her subjects wearing their own clothing, giving them a sense of agency. The successful show helped open long-shut doors, and her momentum kept building as the pandemic brought

even more opportunities to show and sell her work. Finally, in 2021, when she had too many art projects to handle on top of working fulltime, she quit her day job.
“It was a scary and hard decision, but I finally decided to put in my two weeks notice and dive fully into the artwork,” she says. “And that's what I've been doing ever since.”
Today, Okoro’s work has been shown in dozens of galleries and art shows, from Christie’s New York to London’s Maddox Gallery. Her art has been featured in publications like “Essence” and “W,” and her paintings have graced the small screen on shows including NBC’s “Law and Order: Organized Crime” and, of course, Max’s “Sex and the City” reboot, “And Just Like That.” She has partnered with major brands like PepsiCo, and Austin’s CapMetro featured her “Kool-Aid Drawings” on city buses, something else she now has in common with Carrie Bradshaw.
For her next big project, Okoro spent the summer driving back and forth to Houston to install her permanent exhibition as part of the new Meow Wolf Houston. She is one of the few dozen artists creating individual, immersive installations that will likely be visited by hundreds of thousands of art lovers each year. Okoro's installation features a musical element and is her largest work yet — “an essence of a mosh pit inside of something that exists outside of space and time,” according to Meow Wolf.
“I hope that my piece is something that the viewers will remember when they leave,” says Okoro, “or hopefully they'll be curious, or maybe even inspired in some way.”
Okoro’s newest work, and her example of successfully living as an artist, just might pass the creative torch on to another young dreamer.
CARABUENA TEQUILA
From the first sip, Carabuena Tequila feels special, like you're being let in on a family secret — and, you are. Born and raised in Jalisco, Mexico, founder Victor Diaz grew up amidst a rich tapestry of heritage, tradition and endless agave fields.
After moving to Texas in 2012, Diaz worked as a bartender at Maudie's, a beloved Austin institution, where he eventually recruited local entrepreneur Brian Grisby, a regular of Maudie’s, alcohol industry expert Charlie Edwards and creative director, Viridiana Ávila to bring Carabuena to life. For over a decade, he cultivated a new foundation rooted in community, hospitality and immense pride for Mexican and Texan cultures — a spirit that now lives on through Carabuena.
Carabuena is made from 100% blue Weber agave grown and harvested in Jalisco, preserving authenticity in every bottle. Diaz’s deep-rooted connections to the land shine through in taste and presentation. Every element of the Carabuena experience, from the hand-blown recycled glass bottles crafted in Tonalá to the Indigenous-honoring label art designed by Pistache, an artist from Tabasco, pays homage to the Mexican artistry of tequila.
Carabuena isn’t just a tequila — it's an invitation to “Live Your Best Side,” by consciously creating moments that celebrate shared experiences and authentic connection.

THE NELSON FAMILY’S NEXT NOTE
BY SABRINA MACIAS
MMicah Nelson, the youngest son of music legend Willie Nelson, has produced his father's latest album, “Last Leaf on the Tree,” furthering the family’s rich musical legacy. Renowned for seamlessly blending country, folk, blues and rock, Willie Nelson is celebrated through murals, monuments and various works of art for his extraordinary achievements and barrier-breaking sound. Yet, his most notable accolade is that of a loving father.
Growing up surrounded by instruments and creativity, Micah naturally followed in his father’s footsteps, adopting the musical moniker, Particle Kid. His early years in the “Live Music Capital of the World” allowed him to witness his dad create magic at Pedernales Studios outside the city.
“I’ve always loved Austin. They color outside the lines,” recalls Micah, remembering the city as a haven for his father. “Austin embraced his weirdness. It’s where his best work came from.”
As Particle Kid, Micah has released six albums and contributed to various projects, establishing

his distinct future-folk sound. Now, at 34, he steps into the producer role for his father’s 153rd album, showcasing a beautiful partnership.
Micah played more than two dozen instruments in this joint venture, ranging from guitars and pianos to unconventional items like sticks and branches for the album. He also illustrated the cover artwork and teamed up with his wife, Alexandra Dascalu Nelson, on the animation for the music video, further solidifying this as a family-built project.
The album features an emotion-evoking set of songs from various artists, including Warren
Zevon’s poignant “Keep Me In Your Heart” and The Flaming Lips’ reflective “Do You Realize??,” along with original compositions by both Willie and Micah. The tracklist displays their musical synergy whilst exploring themes of love, tranquility and remembrance.
As producer, Micah played a key role in curating the album’s tracks.
“I didn’t want him to do it just because I asked him to,” explains Michah, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with Willie. “I wanted him to feel inspired by it.”
While the album includes songs from artists
that were previously unfamiliar to the 91-year-old legend, Micah ensured each track deeply resonated with his father.
“I was looking for songs that lyrically and melodically had something to say” he says, hoping his dad could “sing honestly, as if he had written it.”
Together, they’ve struck a harmonious balance of their influences, creating a commemorative art piece. “Last Leaf on the Tree” promises to resonate with longtime fans and newcomers alike.

WITH ITS BREATHTAKING BEACHFRONT SETTING, PLANT-BASED CULINARY EXCELLENCE AND HOLISTIC WELLNESS OFFERINGS, PALMA I A: THE HOUSE OF A I A INVITES YOU TO UNWIND, REJUVENATE AND RECONNECT WITH YOURSELF
BY HEIDI OKLA
In just a matter of hours after leaving the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, we found ourselves enveloped in an atmosphere of serene elegance along the breathtaking coastline of the Riviera Maya at Palmaïa, The House of AïA, a top tier, all-inclusive wellness resort. Tucked between lush jungle and the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea in the upscale Playacar area of Playa del Carmen, this beautiful resort offers a harmonious connection with nature, along with an abundance of transformational wellness activities.
Seamlessly blending luxury with a deep commitment to health, spirituality and environmental sustainability, Palmaïa was recently awarded two Michelin Keys and truly elevates the concept of an all-inclusive vacation with the wealth of amenities aimed at
spiritual seekers. In fact, the mission for our getaway was not only to relax in a picturesque setting, but to also keep an open mind about holistic healing experiences and say “yes” to adventure and discovery.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by one of Palmaïa's “nomadic guides," who provided personal services like coordinating dining reservations or scheduling activities. Because the resort’s offering of experiences is so extensive, guides can help organize an itinerary of sessions including ancient cacao ceremonies, meditation, gratitude rituals, soul readings, gong baths and more. They can provide more information on the award-winning Atlantis Spa’s transformative treatments like an ancient Temazcal ceremony. The guides can also share intel on the best spots to view spider monkeys swinging from the treetops, where to swim in cenotes on property, and information about using complimentary paddle boards, bikes, the fitness center and beyond.
After becoming oriented with the property, we navigated a jungle path to our elegant oceanfront swim-out suite, designed with organic eco-friendly materials. From the suite’s private porch, we could step right into the crystal cool waters of an infinity pool. Beyond the pool, through the palm trees, we heard the soothing sounds of waves inviting us to settle into the spirit of slow living.
Hungry from travel, we set out to investigate the many dining options at Palmaïa. The resort’s menus are predominantly vegan, and the cuisine aims to showcase how creative and innovative plant-based dishes can be, while providing optimal health by eliminating toxic ingredients, refined sugars, preservatives and ultra-processed components. Restaurants on the property feature Japanese, Thai, Mexican, Mediterranean and Caribbean fusion concepts. Our favorite spot was the healthy plant-based café that served delicious vegan baked goods and light fare. For beach-goers, there is also a convenient seaside vegan taco truck and a gorgeous, open-air Tulum-inspired beach club to enjoy quick bites while sitting by the shore. For those wishing to opt for non-vegetarian dining, animal
proteins are available as additions to meals. Similarly, while the mocktails are inventive, delicious and plentiful, wine and alcoholic beverages are also available. Twenty-four hour in-room dining is also a perk at this all-inclusive resort.
While the gorgeous setting, bountiful healthy food and luxe accommodations would be enough to qualify Palmaïa as a dream vacation destination, the resort’s distinct and somewhat mystical holistic wellness program makes this retreat unlike any other. AÏA\Wellness is Palmaïa’s core philosophy of inner healing for a transformative journey and is rooted in local traditions and cultures, specifically the ancient teachings of the Maya. Through the resort’s “Architects of Life” programming, guests can take part in a myriad of sessions aimed at personal growth, including talking with a shaman, drawing, yoga, ancestral dancing, breathwork, joining a forgiveness ceremony or healing sound rituals. The sessions are all optional, of course, so that guests can tailor their schedule to suit their own spiritual journey. Curious, we chose to attend a few sessions each day during our stay. As noted on the Palmaïa website, “We offer a safe space where you can experiment at your own rhythm, al-
ways supported by the community, guides and other guests.” We found this to be entirely sincere, and while not all sessions completely resonated, we were excited by these new-to-us experiences and felt confident and comfortable to venture into new activities because we were greeted with a warm welcome at each opportunity for self-discovery.
Palmaïa equally embraces guests — solo travelers, couples, even families with children — with very open arms, no matter if they are seeking spiritual enlightenment or relaxing downtime in a tropical paradise. We felt a little bit of magic in the atmosphere at this enchanting retreat that gently invites deeper thinking about one’s energy flow. It offers a little inspiration to be more mindful, more reflective and more aware of simple things like healthy habits and daily practices. A getaway to Palmaïa: The House of AïA might even spark renewed reflection regarding one’s contributions to the community at large. It’s also simply a beautiful place to savor quiet moments on the beach.

RENÉE ROULEAU HAS BEEN A FAVORITE AMONG CELEBRITY CLIENTELE FOR YEARS
by Kelly Krause
FROM SABRINA CARPENTER TO DEMI LOVATO, SUSAN SARANDON AND PATRICK DEMPSEY -- LEARN WHY
TRIBEZA contributor Kelly Krause recently sat down with renowned esthetician and Austin resident Renée Rouleau who shared highlights of her career, along with her top product recommendations.
With 28 years of business under her belt, you could say that Renée Rouleau is an absolute legend in the skincare industry. I first heard about Renée in 2016 when I worked for SXSW. A well-known fashion and beauty editor from LA was in town and shared on social media how excited she was to score a facial with Renée Rouleau. She shared an after photo, with glowing skin, as well as every product she used, and from that moment forward, I became a Renée fan.
If you’ve followed Renée’s career, you’ve seen the beautiful evolution of both branding and product expansion growth, but also how Renée has seamlessly built community both in and outside of Austin. Maybe it’s her inclusive, educational or giving approach we get to see on social media, or the fact she’s one of the first to pitch in and volunteer her time to causes near and dear to her heart, but either way, Renée has a warmth to her that’s unmatched.
KELLY KRAUSE: How long have you been an esthetician?
RENÉE ROULEAU: 35 years. The industry has evolved tremendously, and it continues to be an exciting time. I still have a passion for my craft, my industry, helping elevate estheticians, and most importantly, the impact that I make in helping others feel confident in their skin.
KK: How did you get your start?
RR: My passion for beauty began early in my grandmother’s salon, The Powder Puff Beauty
Shoppe, where I saw how confidence from a great look could brighten someone's day. Inspired by her, I chose beauty as my career path and enrolled in beauty school right after high school.
KK: Tell us how you became a celebrity esthetician. Did a product help launch your career or was it word of mouth?
RR: I didn't seek out celebrity clients, but they found me. Jessica Simpson was my first, when she needed help with acne while living in Dallas. Next, Demi Lovato came on board, and after she moved to LA, I visited her regularly. She would post about me on social media and talk about me to the medi, and my reputation as the go-to esthetician grew from there.
Oscar winners like Susan Sarandon and Brie Larson and Patrick Dempsey — “McDreamy” and yes he is very dreamy! — would become my clients.
KK: What is the Renée Rouleau approach?
RR: Most skincare brands categorize skin as “dry, normal, or oily,” but as an esthetician, I know skin is more complex. Our skin is like our fingerprint — it’s unique to us and only us. People need customized routines and targeted products to address their unique concerns so I created a product line based on nine skin types to get my clients the results they need.
KK: If you could recommend 3 products to anyone, what would they be?
RR: Anti Bump Solution: It’s our best-selling product. For those who get stubborn hormonal bumps and breakouts that develop deep under the skin, this helps them go away really fast. It’s also great for men who get bumps and ingrown hairs from shaving.
Vitamin C&E Treatment: Gone are the days of using a vitamin C serum that stings on contact causing a compromised barrier. This is a no-sting formula using the new gold standard of vitamin C — Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate.
Rapid Response Detox Masque: There are many products out there to address breakouts once they appear, but we can prevent them in the first place, so this mask focuses on prevention. It interrupts breakouts in their early stages by reducing the impact of bad surface bacteria on the skin, and it smells amazing!
KK: The Renée Rouleau brand has changed over the years. What’s been the biggest shift?
RR: Celebrating 28 years in business is remarkable. My success stems from my passion for learning, which drives me to develop innovative products and share my skin expertise. While my methods have evolved from TV and direct mail newsletters to now online with social media and video content, my message remains focused on offering a unique perspective. At the heart of it, I’ve always been a content creator.
One big change I have made recently is for the first time in 28 years is having others sell my line, which is something I have never done before. Our line is now being sold through estheticians and skincare professionals — these are my people, and it’s an honor to have them be ambassadors for our brand.
KK: We recently saw that you were hosting screenings of the film "Skincare" across the U.S., bringing your esthetician network together, not to mention, Sabrina Carpenter and Demi Lovato continue to sing your praises. Are you noticing an uptick in business or how has this shifted for you?
RR: When I heard about the movie "Skincare," I
Renée's top 3 products are the Anti Bump Solution, Rapid Detox Masque and the Vitamin C&E Treatment.
contacted the production company to host screenings for our esthetician community, and they agreed. I even shared a stage with the main star, Elizabeth Banks.
My long-time clients, Demi Lovato and Sabrina Carpenter, have influenced product demand as everyone wants to use the products from my line they swear by. With Demi's wedding in May 2025, we'll focus on bridal skin prep, and I'll join Sabrina on her “Short N’ Sweet” tour to keep her skin clear and glowing.
KK: If anyone follows you on social media, they know what "Obey Renée" is — tips you share on social media, like shutting the airplane window on a flight. What else should everyone be doing, regardless of skin type?
RR: Don’t get in a rut. Give your skin extra love at home above and beyond your daily skincare. This could include adding a facial device — I like using NuFace — or giving your skin a facial with an exfoliating peel, scrub, and mask. Your skin greatly appreciates newness to keep it staying metabolically active.
KK: How do you approach building community, both as a business and as an entrepreneur?
RR: Kindness is one of my core values and is at the heart of how I lead. In business, it is perceived as being competitive, so I always seek opportunities to bring the esthetic and/ or entrepreneur community together to make us all better. I don’t hold secrets to my success and I share my wisdom with others like others have done for me. At the end of the day, it’s about the legacy we leave, and I strive to make a small difference in my world.
KK: What's the legacy you hope to leave behind?
RR: In the final days of my husband’s life, he said, “Did my life matter?,” and, “Did I make a difference?,” so I have a tattoo that says “to serve” and I got this to always remind me that I’m here to be of service to others, which is why I chose a profession that improves lives by helping people feel good. I try to serve in all areas of my life, and I would like to think that my legacy will be that I was generous and made my small little world a better place.

BAKING HER OWN PATH
AFTER DECADES IN THE RESTAURANT INDUSTRY, AMANDA ROCKMAN OPENED HER OWN AUSTIN BAKESHOP THAT BLENDS CREATIVITY WITH CLASSIC TECHNIQUES
By LIZ HARROUN
This fall, Amanda Rockman opened Rockman Coffee + Bakeshop in East Austin, where we can enjoy our favorite vices — caffeine, sugar, butter, gluten and booze are its self-proclaimed specialties — all with a rare flair and quality. Rockman’s journey to opening her own bakery reflects her deep-rooted passion for the culinary arts, love for meticulous craftsmanship, and desire to preserve the art of pastry in an ever-changing world.
Growing up in Katy, Texas, Rockman was known for her social and creative nature. Despite her artistic flair, one of Rockman’s defining traits was her methodical approach to life. She was meticulous in everything she did, from how her room was kept to how she pursued her hobbies. This quality would later become the cornerstone of her career in pastry making.
“I was always very particular about how things were done,” recalls Rockman, “and that translated well into becoming a pastry chef.”
Rockman’s love for baking began at home, influenced by her mother’s passion for scratch-made baked goods. Her mom pored over Bon Appétit magazines, selecting recipes to try, particularly during the holidays. Rockman’s early exposure to this world of home baking, combined with her interest in chemistry and math during high school, helped her realize that baking was a beautiful blend of science, art and creativity.
While Rockman was always interested in baking, it was not her first career choice. She initially attended Emerson College in Boston, where she studied film. However, she found herself
spending more time in restaurant kitchens than in classrooms, staging in local establishments to gain hands-on experience. During this time, Rockman had a career-changing epiphany — baking wasn’t just a hobby. It could be her profession.
Rockman took a bold step away from her studies at Emerson, applying to both the Culinary Institute of America and NYU’s School of Art. While waiting to hear back from the schools, she moved to Austin, where she worked at Mozart’s Coffee Roasters as a barista during the day and a baker at night. When she was accepted into both programs, she chose the CIA in Hyde Park, New York, and began her studies there in 2002.
After working in acclaimed restaurants across the country, Rockman returned to Austin in 2015 as the executive pastry chef for South Congress Hotel. Over the next several years, she progressed from executive pastry chef to operations roles, further honing her skills in the kitchen and on the business side of the hospitality industry.
During this time, Amanda observed the toll that the pandemic and subsequent recession took on the profession, with pastry chefs often being the first in the hospitality industry to lose their jobs in tough times. This led her to reflect on the future of her craft.
“Being a pastry chef or a baker is an old classic profession, and I think it’s dying,” shares Rockman. “I want to preserve it.”
It was this desire to protect and elevate the art of pastry that led Rockman to open Rockman Coffee + Bakeshop. The bakeshop not only showcases her
culinary talents, but also serves as a platform for creative expression, something Rockman felt had been stifled in the rigid world of fine dining.
Rockman Coffee + Bakeshop is a reflection of the chef’s vision, personality and freedom. The space itself is vibrant and full of character, with bright tiles, tie-dye floors and music that reflects Rockman’s eclectic tastes.
“I can be as loud as I want,” she says with a smile. “No one’s going to tell me, ‘No,’ because I own it, and that feels really good.”
The bakeshop offers a variety of croissants, bagels and other pastries, all made with the highest attention to detail. Rockman’s menu includes classic flavors and unique twists, such as Vanilla Glazed Croissants and Apple Almond Croissants infused with orange blossom water. Her bagels are made with painstaking care, from the dough’s long proofing process to the homemade schmears like French Onion Dip and Garlic Herb.
Rockman Coffee + Bakeshop is not just a bakery — it’s a space to gather, enjoy tea or experience a happy hour with cake and wine. Rockman has created a place where creativity, community and the art of pastry can flourish, and where pastry chefs can feel valued and continue to grow their craft.
Rockman is rightfully proud of what she’s built. After 20 years in the industry, she now has the freedom to be herself, to create a space that is uniquely hers and to share her passion for baking with the world.

MATTHEW GASTON IS ON A MISSION TO GET FOLKS EXCITED ABOUT PLANTS
Matthew Gaston leads with contagious positivity and passion for his work. If you search for him on social media, you’ll find a plethora of vibrant, humorous content full of song and dance, primarily centered around plant education. Gaston started making videos in 2020 as a way to practice virtual speaking. He was in Hawaii working on his PhD in Tropical Plant and Soil Science when the pandemic suddenly shut everything down. His oral exams were moved to a virtual setting, so in an effort to practice speaking to the camera, Gaston started making videos. He started with cooking videos and eventually shifted to talking about plants. Over the years, he has built a loyal following across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
“My goal is for it to be fun for me,” says Gaston regarding the creation of video content. “If I am having fun, then it will likely be fun for folks to watch. Secondarily, I want folks to learn a thing or two about plants as they are often under-appreciated and under-discussed in our school systems.”
From the beginning, his theatrical content has resonated with the queer community. Gaston is honored and delighted by their support.
By LIZ HARROUN Photographs by ROGER HO
“Botany is full of queerness from trees that can change their sex to hermaphroditic flowers being scientifically described as perfect,” adds Gaston. “As a gay man myself, I am proud of who I am, and I am proud of the folks in the queer community living their lives true to who they are.”
In January 2022, Gaston took on the role of the Education Director at Zilker Botanical Garden, where his passion for plants paired perfectly with his charming ability to engage an audience.
For Gaston, a garden is more than just a collection of plants; it’s a living classroom. On a mission to foster community and appreciation of the botanical world, Gaston enjoys educating the younger generations.
“When I was in elementary school, I visited a botanical garden and became obsessed with plants. Perhaps, a handful of the kids [I interact with] come away with a similar experience.”
While he recently left his full-time role at the Zilker Botanical Garden, Gaston thoroughly enjoyed his time there, and the experience inspired him to double down on spreading the word about plants. As for future endeavors, Gaston is working on exciting new personal projects focusing more on widespread education. Fortunately, we may still see him teaching botany classes around town.
People like Gaston help keep lush green spaces alive and accessible for us Austinites. Through his educational social media presence, he also helps youth worldwide stay interested in plants and conservation. Gaston has an infectious passion for history, community and youth education, and he’s using it to stoke folks’ curiosity about the natural world.

MEET THE FESTIVE REAL-LIFE COUPLE KEEPING HOLIDAY MAGIC ALIVE AS SANTA AND MRS. CLAUS ON THE AUSTIN TRAIL OF LIGHTS
BY DARCIE DUTTWEILER
PHOTOS COURTESY OF AUSTIN TRAIL OF LIGHTS
FOR THE PAST 12 YEARS, GUY BENSON AND DEBORAH PARSONS have embodied the Christmas spirit as the official Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Austin Trail of Lights, which celebrates its 60th year this December.
Their festive journey with Austin Trail of Lights started in 2012, but their commitment to spreading holiday cheer extends further. The couple’s heartwarming tale began nearly three decades ago when Parsons, working in the fire department, and Benson, working in EMS, crossed paths during educational outreach programs in public schools.
“When we saw each other, we fell in love, and next thing, we've been together for 29 years,” laughs Benson.
Before he donned the iconic red suit at Austin Trail of Lights, Benson dedicated almost two decades to Santa Claus work, initially raising funds for pet organizations and becoming Blue Santa for Austin Police Operation Blue Santa. Parsons eventually was asked to join him.
“I never planned on being Mrs. Claus,” explains Parsons. “I thought, ‘Should I be insulted?’ But, the children ran up and said, ‘We’ve never had a Mrs. Blue Claus before!’ I fell in love with it.”
Together, they served on the Austin Police Operation Blue Santa's board of directors and as Mr. and Mrs. Blue Santa for 15 years. However, a life-altering event in 1999, just a month into Benson's retirement, sparked a new chapter in their lives. A near-fatal encounter with a drunk driver inspired
them to establish "Danger Without Intentions," a program aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of impaired driving. Through their program, they've reached over 3 million people across Texas, sharing a powerful message of responsibility.
"You don't want to be on Santa's naughty list of that one," warns Benson.
Becoming Mr. and Mrs. Claus at the Austin Trail of Lights was a dream come true. As a native Austinite, the Trail holds a special place in Benson’s heart, evoking childhood memories of attending the festival with his father. The event, now celebrating its 60th anniversary, has grown from a small "Yule Fest" in 1965 to Austin's biggest holiday celebration. With more than 2 million lights, 90 lighted holiday trees, and 70 other holiday displays and lighted tunnels, it's a dazzling spectacle that draws millions of visitors.
Parsons' favorite part of the experience is witnessing the joy on children's faces, especially because Santa visits are welcome to all Trail-goers and photos are provided completely free of charge.
"The Trail of Lights is amazing because of the simple fact that I've got some of the best elves in the world," adds Benson, praising the volunteers from Dell Children's Hospital who assist them.
Due to such high demand, the couple also facilitates the booking of other Mr. and Mrs. Clauses and even has a Santa's Workshop to maintain their costumes, props, sleigh and reindeer. Benson's dedication to his role is evident in the sheer number of appearances he makes each year.
"Most Santas will work for 30 days, but I start in November," explains Beson. As the Austin Trail of Lights celebrates its 60th anniversary, the couple reflects on its enduring appeal. "It's a Christmas tradition for Austin," says Benson. "It's how you kick off the season."
They've witnessed the event evolve over the years, but its core magic remains the same. "We watch them grow," says Parsons, referring to the children who return year after year. In fact, the very first baby Guy Benson helped to deliver when he worked with Austin EMS, named Guyanna in honor of Guy himself, comes every year to see him at Trail of Lights.
“Now, Guyanna brings her grandchildren, and they all get to come up there and get a picture with Santa,” says Benson. “That's one of the few times that we stop the line.”
Maintaining their holiday cheer throughout the season is no small feat, but the couple takes it in stride. "We don't really notice until Christmas Day," shares Parsons. "I’m sore in my mouth from smiling constantly."
With their unwavering commitment to spreading joy and their deeprooted love for the Austin community, Benson and Parsons continue to illuminate the holiday season, one twinkling light at a time. Their story is a testament to the power of love, service and the enduring magic of the Austin Trail of Lights.

A Limestone Love Story
How One Couple’s Vision Brought an Architectural Classic Back to Life as Their Family Dream Home
BY LIZ HARROUN PHOTOGRAPHS BY LIKENESS STUDIO
My vision was to create a house reflective of lifelong personal interests rather than trends.
WHEN ROBERT BIARD PURCHASED A WEST AUSTIN LOT in May 2018, the plan was always to tear down the existing house. Built in 1983, it was a quintessential example of 1980s postmodern architecture, characterized by asymmetrical designs, multi-level rooms, skylights, blue exteriors, and terracotta floors. Renowned architect Bob Renfro had initially designed the home to harmonize with its dramatic natural surroundings. Perched on a steep limestone hill with a view of a grotto with a 10-foot waterfall, the house evoked the spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright's acclaimed work, Fallingwater. Nestled discreetly within the rugged rocky hillside and surrounded by dense native trees and plants, the home offered expansive views through its large windows and balconies, overlooking a natural creek and wooded trail below.
The original house stood in stark contrast to the prevailing architectural trend in the area, which favored large, white stucco boxy shapes with uniform windows, black trim, and concrete finishes. When Robert and his then-girlfriend Amy first saw the house, they were captivated by its unique charm, despite its need for significant care. As children of the 1980s, now in their 40s, Robert and Amy appreciated the individuality of that era. They made the difficult decision to tear the house down — but to faithfully rebuild it according to the original architectural plans. Embracing the spirit of postmodernism, they aimed to defy current design conventions
and create a home that celebrated individuality and nature.
Demolition of the house began, and one autumn evening, Robert took Amy to the property to show her the initial progress. He knelt beside an old limestone garden bench and proposed to her while their friends and family, hidden within the hollowed-out frame of the house, looked on. A lively celebration followed under the old rafters, marking the beginning of their new journey together.
The first task was to find Bob Renfro, who had retired from teaching at the University of Texas at Austin in 1997. Robert eventually found Renfro’s contact information buried in the university’s archives and contacted him. At 88, Renfro was still full of life and agreed to visit the property.
“As Bob slowly made his way on his walker down the home’s steep hillside, he fondly recollected stories about the design and build,” says Amy.
He was thrilled to join the team and generously offered his expertise to help them honor and build upon his original vision from forty years earlier. Renfro, like Amy, hailed from a small town in East Texas. Coincidentally, he had settled in downtown Austin, just a short walk from where Amy and Robert were staying while their new home was being built. As the pandemic began, they welcomed their first baby boy, and “Uncle Bob” became a frequent visitor, offering support during an isolating time.
Joshua Hogan of Hogan Architects helped the Biards design their dream home, referred to as the Sundown home, while maintaining some of the elements that Renfro had created, somewhat ironically, as a spec project. What started as an initial site visit meeting resulted in an extraordinary attestation of combining talent, vision and teamwork.
The Biards, Renfro and Hogan started with a joint site visit, which played a pivotal role in shaping the project's design philosophy. During this meeting, the foundation was laid for the guiding ethos — preserving
legacy while embracing innovation. This approach aligned perfectly with Renfro’s extensive design background, having worked alongside postmodern icons such as Charles Moore and Robert Venturi.
“Bob’s ability to bring forward elements of those influences into the project was critical, and it allowed us to preserve key aspects of his original design while layering in new features that reflected the personal needs of Amy and Robert,” says Hogan.
Hogan recalls how challenging — and equally rewarding — it was to find the appropriate balance between maintaining Renfro’s architectural spirit and introducing new elements crucial to Amy and Robert’s distinctive vision.
“The homeowners fully embraced the eclectic design, viewing it as a self-reflection of their individualism,” explains Hogan. “Their openness allowed us to innovate while honoring the legacy of the original design.”
The breezeway blends modern design with structural ingenuity, featuring floating canopies elegantly supported by flawless steel. Working with local landscaping company Austin Groundskeeper, they restored the entire property to native plants, grasses, and trees.
For the interior, Amy worked with Ann Tucker of Studio A Group. Early in their collaboration, Amy introduced Tucker to the collections she and Robert had assembled featuring Southwestern art, pottery, artifacts and rugs honoring his Native American heritage.
“My vision was to create a house reflective of lifelong personal interests rather than trends,” says Amy.
Amy and Robert also wanted to incorporate antique pieces inherited from their families as well as French, Italian, and American antiques and textiles Amy had gathered from years of treasure hunting. Tucker and Amy created a material palette to weave together these collections.
Renfro’s son-in-law, Ethan Hutchinson, custom-built the walnut dining room table. The home has eclectic artwork and stunning vintage pieces, including antique chandeliers and lamps. Raising their children as proud members of the Choctaw Indian Nation, Amy and Robert also display their collection of Native American fine art, pottery, jewelry, artifacts and rugs. Hand-painted ceramic tiles, colorful wallpapers and custom furniture add to the home's uniqueness.
Amy and Robert welcomed their first son in October 2020. Four years after purchasing the lot and shortly after the arrival of a second son in 2022, Amy and Robert finally moved into their dream home, a sanctuary they had envisioned together, surrounded by nature.
The family still stays in touch with Uncle Bob, an avid painter in his 90s. Thanks to Renfro and Hogan, the Biards now have their own little slice of heaven with rich design and nature elements. It’s a beautiful testament to several generations coming together on one tangible, thoughtful project that Amy, Robert and their two sons now call home.
HOW AUSTIN FC GOALKEEPER BRAD STUVER AND HIS WIFE ASHLEY ARE MOVING FROM THE FIELD TO PHILANTHROPY WITH THE LAUNCH OF THEIR FOUNDATION
by LIZ HARROUN
YOU MIGHT RECOGNIZE BRAD STUVER as the starting goalkeeper for Austin FC, — fans often shout “Stuuuu” when he makes a play — but his work off the field is equally impressive. In August, Brad and his wife, Ashley, officially launched The Brad and Ashley Stuver Foundation, which is dedicated to amplifying the voices and missions of local nonprofits.
Both Brad and Ashley, who hail from Ohio, have been deeply engaged in community work since their college years at Cleveland State, where they first met.
“Even in college, we were both pretty active in the community,” shares Brad. Their involvement with various nonprofits only grew as Brad’s soccer career took them from Columbus to New York City, and now to Austin. “Becoming a professional athlete gave me a bigger platform,” explains Brad, “and we wanted to use that platform to increase our visibility and our impact.”
The foundation focuses on five key pillars — equality, community engagement, environmental sustainability, education and access to
essential services — intentionally broad in scope to encompass a range of causes. Through this flexible framework, the foundation aims to support a wide variety of local nonprofits, whether by offering financial aid, raising awareness, or volunteering time.
Brad serves on the board of Equality Texas, Ashley is on the board of Avow Texas — both helping champion rights for everyone in this state. In addition, the Stuvers have long been committed to The Laundry Project, an initiative they have supported since 2016. This initiative provides free laundry services to low-income communities. From Columbus to the Bronx and now here in Austin, the Stuvers host multiple laundry events annually with the help of local volunteers and organizations like Los Verdes, an independent supporters group of Austin FC.
According to Ashley, one of their main goals is fundraising for the Laundry Project events.
“We aim to host four laundry dates, three times per year, across multiple locations on the same day,” she explains. The couple has
partnered with local venues, including HopSquad Brewing Company, to organize fundraisers and bring the community together to support these events.
The Stuvers have taken full advantage of Brad’s platform as a professional athlete to champion their causes. Whether it’s participating in the Austin Pride parade or working with Equality Texas at the Capitol, they have committed to using their visibility for advocacy and education. The Brad and Ashley Stuver Foundation website also offers a resource guide with educational tools on voter rights and other civic matters, in hopes of informing and empowering the public.
Looking ahead, the Stuvers are excited to brainstorm more ways to engage the Austin community. They’re particularly focused on planning events that will raise awareness and funds for their foundation’s work.
“We want to bring a little fun to it as well,” says Ashley, noting the couple’s competitive spirit. Whether it’s trivia nights or friendly competitions, the Stuvers hope to inspire action through
activities that foster connection and fun.
While the foundation is still in its early stages, Brad and Ashley are confident that their work will grow and continue to make an impact. For now, the foundation remains a small, family-run operation, with Brad and Ashley handling most of the duties themselves, but they’re optimistic about the future and look forward to expanding their efforts.
The Stuvers are helping build a stronger, more connected community here in Austin. The Brad and Ashley Stuver Foundation aims to catalyze change — one project, one event and one partnership at a time. bastuverfoundation.org

ETexas Book Festival Literary Director and TRIBEZA contributor, Hannah Gabel, shares her insights into the highlights of this year’s festival.
ach fall, readers flock to downtown Austin for a weekend of bookish revelry. Tents line the north end of Congress Avenue up to the Capitol grounds with the iconic legislative landmark towering in the background. Amidst this picturesque setting, book lovers of all ages wander the grounds with a shared sense of excitement.
For nearly three decades, the Texas Book Festival has provided Texans the opportunity to connect with fellow book lovers and engage with their favorite authors beyond the page. Founded in 1995 by librarian and then-First Lady of Texas, Laura Bush, the festival began as an initiative to foster a love of reading by bringing together readers and local writers. Now in its 29th year, the festival has grown into one of the nation’s largest and most anticipated literary events, annually welcoming 40,000 attendees and 250 to 300 authors from across Texas and the globe.
As Literary Director of the Texas Book Festival — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that now offers year-round literary programming in addition to our flagship event — my mission is to showcase the year’s most compelling books through the curation of a diverse lineup, one that provides

a platform for both critically acclaimed authors and captivating new voices. With the support of volunteer selection committees and dedicated colleagues, my team and I work year-round to craft thoughtful festival sessions that inspire, educate, entertain and celebrate the literary community.
The 2024 festival is set for Nov. 16 and 17 and will feature 280 authors, poets, chefs, and illustrators, 40% of whom call Texas home. Our carefully evaluated festival titles cover a broad range of genres — from hard-hitting nonfiction, gripping memoirs, and historical journalism to literary fiction, romance and fantasy.
Readers will recognize some of the names on this year’s Festival roster, which includes numerous bestselling authors, BookTok and Bookstagram fan favorites and recipients of the prestigious Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award. However, I’m especially eager for attendees to discover the outstanding work of authors they don’t yet know.
Free and open to the public, bookworms are invited to attend panel discussions, author signings, cooking demonstrations, poetry readings, story times, interactive family-friendly activities, teen-focused programming and even a literary-themed bar crawl for those over 21. Our program includes something for everyone in the roughly 200 sessions scheduled to take place over the two-day event.
In addition to extensive free programming, this year’s event will feature two special ticketed sessions for festival headliners. We’re proud to present Academy Awardwinning actor and Texas legend Matthew McConaughey in an exclusive conversation with distinguished filmmaker Richard Linklater to promote the paperback release of “Greenlights.” Additionally, seven-time “New York Times” bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell will discuss his latest title, “Revenge of the New Tipping Point,” in a highly-anticipated interview with Emmy Award-winning journalist (and fellow festival author) Michele Norris.

“As a producer, actress and mother, nothing captures my attention quite like getting lost in a great story. Supporting the Texas Book Festival is my way of sharing that love with others, especially families like mine who cherish reading together. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow book lovers here in Texas and celebrate the power and importance of storytelling, which brings us all closer.”

A MINDFUL PAUSE DURING THE HOLIDAY HURRY
Advice on life and love from Kristin Armstrong
Dear Kristin,
How do you navigate family stress during the holidays, and what strategies do you recommend for maintaining a sense of balance and joy during this often hectic time?
traditions best generate that feeling for them. I recall sometimes being surprised by what meant the most to my children, and I was happy to focus my energy in that direction. We can expend a lot of effort in directions that don’t matter and shortchange the things that are more meaningful. Communication creates clarity, which creates inspired action.
I love that you are asking this question before the holiday season. I usually get SOS messages mid-holiday season from drowning clients, so this tells me that you understand the power of being intentional. Our culture is entirely too rushed in my opinion. With the way stores put out Christmas decorations the day after the Halloween candy and messages everywhere telling us to hurry and spend, it’s no wonder we start spinning. The only way to counteract the spin is by mindfully hitting pause. It serves us well to take a deep breath in early November and spend some time thinking about how we want to feel over the holidays. Notice this is not a question about what we want to do or buy. When we tune into how we want to feel first, then we can approach decisions about how we spend our time and money in a way that best supports the feeling we want to create.
If you have a spouse or children, it can be a beautiful conversation to ask everyone ahead of time how they want to feel over the holidays, and what experiences or
To conserve our greatest treasures, our time and energy, it can be helpful to look at our calendars and mindfully consider the invitations and expectations for the season. Rather than saying “yes” to everything, think about what matters the most and say “yes” to those things first. Rather than stacking our schedules, we can leave some margin for breathing room and spontaneity.
Instead of waiting until the last minute to purchase holiday gifts, it can help to collect items throughout the year as you find them for the special people in your life. Then, when everyone else is out stress-shopping, you can be home enjoying time with your people. Finally, the best way to ensure balance and joy is to maintain good habits of self-care. It can be easy to slip into mindless eating and drinking and abandon our healthy routines of exercise, nutrition, hydration, and sleep. When we make a point to keep up our good habits, we can close out the year and begin a brand new one without feeling like we are starting from behind. Overall, my message is one of thoughtfulness — being thoughtful about what we spend, both in terms of
our money and our time; being thoughtful about our expectations and invitations, focusing on how we want to feel and what choices support those feelings; and being thoughtful about our self-care, knowing that the way we show up for ourselves and the people we love has far more to do with our being than our doing. We can only make things special for others when we are taking especially good care of ourselves.
I wish you, your family, and your friends the most present and joyous holiday season, as well as the finest blessings in the New Year.
With so much love, Kristin
