... You just want to make sure what you’re doing, you’re not missing out on your own path.” Twenty area athletes received honors as the outstanding athlete of the year in their respective sport, followed by male and female overall athlete of the year, coach of the year and scholar athlete of the year. Tribune Publisher Terri Leifeste told the student-athletes that just being invited to the banquet represented countless hours of hard work and sacrifice by themselves, their parents/ guardians and their coaches. “We are absolutely thrilled to have so many people in the room tonight to celebrate the accomplishments of more than 200 of the most outstanding high school studentathletes in Boone County,” Leifeste said during her opening remarks. The event would not have been possible without the support of title sponsor University of Missouri Health Care. The Best of Prep nominee selections were based on many factors, including statistics, postseason and state honors, the direct observations of the Tribune sports staff as well as the input of area coaches. ©2017. FROM COLUMBIA TRIBUNE STAFF Local student-athletes from 12 Boone County high schools across 20 different sports were recognized Monday night during the Columbia Daily Tribune’s Best of Prep Tribbys Awards banquet. The third annual event celebrated successes from the past school year with a dinner and program at the Holiday Inn Executive Center. Over 500 people attended the event to witness the awards ceremony and hear from Gabby Douglas, an Olympic gold medal-winning United States gymnast, who opened up about her career and gave advice to scores of high school athletes who were present. Douglas answered questions during an on-stage Q&A session with Tribune Sports Editor Kevin Graeler and sports reporter Eric Blum before fielding a few more from members of the audience. “I always enjoy talking to students to help them along in their career because life is not always easy — it’s a bunch of ups and downs,” Douglas told the Tribune. “So anything that I can do to help, I’m totally on board.

Controlled Technique, High-Speed Performance, First-Rate Pitching Turning up the heat — safely — is the goal of the Throwing Velocity Program at MU Health Care’s Human Performance Institute (HPI). The Throwing Velocity Program is for male and female athletes of all ages and skill levels who want to throw harder. Classes meet two to three times a week for 90 minutes each. The first half of those workouts, led by HPI trainer Dylan Newcomer, is devoted to throwing-specific exercises, including extensive arm-care training to maintain a healthy shoulder, as well as hurling weighted balls to develop arm strength and proper mechanics. The second half of the workout focuses on general physical preparation. “Strength and conditioning and injury prevention are equally important,” said Aaron Gray, MD, the HPI medical director. “If we have a healthy athlete who is weak and slow or can’t throw hard, that’s not good for a team or a coach. If they’re really fast and strong, but they’re injured and broken down, that’s not good either. “One of the exciting things about HPI is we’re able to work on athlete performance and injury prevention in tandem. We can see how the pitchers’ strength and throwing velocity improves, and we can also track and make sure they are staying healthy.”
To learn more about HPI’s Throwing Velocity Program, email us at muhumanperformance@health.missouri.edu.

Nathaniel Peat 2019 MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
CONGRATULATIONS to all of Boone County’s high school athletes!
WHY HE WON... Nathaniel won because of not only his football accomplishments, but his track and field accolades to match. Peat went through some early-season adversity and injuries and still pushed through to race at the state meet in his final day as a high school athlete. Peat was also a dominant running back that helped Rock Bridge football win nine games reach the Class 6 state quarterfinals. We wish Peat nothing but the best representing Boone County playing for Stanford football in the Pac 12.
Emma Chapman
You deserve a better breakfast.
2019 FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
WHY SHE WON... Emma won because of her contributions in basketball, volleyball and track. Chapman was a middle hitter and blocker for Hickman volleyball and played an integral role on the team despite already signing for Kansas State women’s basketball. In the spring, Chapman took second place in the Class 5 high jump at the state meet in her first season as a member of the Kewpie’s track team. Chapman also averaged 16.3 points for Hickman’s basketball team. We wish Chapman great success in the Big 12.
