Tribute Magazine Celebrates

Sherry Wurgler “Growing your resilience in times of crisis”

I am a front- line worker and the outcry for mental health has never been more profound. As health care providers, we are rising up to meet the ever -growing demands that Covid-19 has placed on us, our communities, our country and the world. We are the leaders in a pandemic that has confused, frustrated and nearly disabled us at times, and still we fight back and regain our place, moving on and gaining insight as new knowledge reveals itself. Leadership is in demand more than ever in a world where the norms have seemed to have changed overnight. I am a ritual abuse survivor and my memoir “Surviving Ritual Abuse” received best seller on Amazon. It is growing up in a community that portrayed servant leadership that made a profound difference in my life. The lessons gained from leadership helped change me from feeling helpless to hopeful, insignificant to valued, shy to assertive. Servant leadership affirms and mentors the best qualities in a person. There were times in my childhood I felt so small, insignificant, irrelevant and devalued. Moments of hopelessness, helplessness invaded my thoughts and made me wonder if I would ever amount to anything. Would I ever make a difference in the world? Could I? Did I have anything to offer my community, my country, the world? Where was my place in the whole scheme of things? What was my purpose on earth? Servant leadership doesn’t hide behind a desk and disappear when the going gets tough. Rather, it is out front leading the way. Offering experience, mentoring, and value to others. It is there to uplift and support those when things look out of control with no plan and no certain path or direction.

Growing my resilience as a child came from watching the behavior and attitude of others who had suffered losses and yet persevered through and came out stronger and with more courage than ever before. Servant leadership inspired me to focus on the solution rather than the problem. My fears, doubts and uncertainties melted into the background and what emerged was confidence, assertiveness, compassion and the awareness that I was placed on this earth for a reason. Through Facing and dealing with difficult times in my life, I have grown my resilience, and as a health care worker resilience is needed now more than ever. I am there, as a health care worker, to give your loved one the absolute best care through my bed side skills and by offering them the support, encouragement and compassion that is missing from in person family and loved ones during Covid 19 due to social isolation. Trust that your loved one is not alone. Myself and others, a host of teams, are taking care of your loved one and putting their needs and concerns at the most top level possible. Your loved ones matter! Stressful times come and go, they move in and out of our lives like the seasons of winter, spring, summer and fall. Each season has its hardships and blessings. Difficult times come and go; learning the lessons that come through trying times is the gift. It is through difficult trying times that our resilience is tested. How we process our situation and how we perceive our place in that situation makes all the difference in the world. As a front- line worker, I give my all to the care and support of my patients. In the same manner, I give my all and support to my co- workers who are doing the same. Together we are making a difference! Together we are strong! Don’t lose hope. As a representative of health care workers across the country, we are here for you. You are not alone. We see and hear how you miss your loved one when they are in the hospital. We are giving our all to help ease their discomfort and provide reassurance and comfort during their stay. We are with you in spirit when you can’t be there for your loved one in person. We are there. We are here. We’re not going anywhere! We are standing our ground and we will continue to make a difference in fighting COVID-19. I am a Transformational Life Leadership Coach. My website is in development and you can reach me on Facebook messenger. Peace, Sherry Wurgler

Don’t Buy More Clothes…Buy More Jewelry!

Crystal Kennedy Have you ever said to yourself, “I don’t have anything to wear?” Or how about, “It’s time to revamp my wardrobe?” Have you ever thought to yourself? “I wear the same thing over and over again?” Trust me, I feel your pain and you are not alone. Well my friend, I have the perfect solution for you. Don’t buy more clothes. Buy more jewelry! More jewelry you might ask. Yes, more jewelry! Do you know that you can change your whole outfit just by the jewelry you choose to wear? Think of how many times you’ve worn that same black suit. Yes, I know that you may feel that everyone has seen your wear that so much that it has become monotonous and mundane. Well, have you considered sprucing it up with a spectacular pearl necklace set or how about a vibrant, blue turquoise stone set? See, by changing up your jewelry, it now becomes the show piece. By choosing a statement piece of jewelry, you are now diverting the eye from the black suit to the jewelry set. Jewelry enhances the beauty of the wearer which compels the eye of the beholder. Yes, jewelry was designed to enhance your beauty. Let’s take your eyes for an example. Say you have blue eyes and let’s say you choose to wear all black. Choose a necklace set that is all blue or a set that has blue in it. By making this selection, your eyes will stand out and have now enhanced your beauty. When choosing jewelry to match your outfit it can be challenging for some and exhilarating for others. Personally, when I shop for clothing, I save selecting the jewelry to accompany for last. Here’s what I do for an example, say I am purchasing a green dress. I then look for a necklace set that very well may have a variety of different colors in it, but if it has a hue of green, I know that it would match perfectly with it. Then that necklace set would not only enhance the beauty of the dress, but my beauty and personality as well.

Sometimes, you might have to think outside of the box. Interesting you may think…. yes! When I say think outside of the box, I mean that sometimes you may have to step outside of your comfort zone. You may like a simple dainty one-piece rhinestone necklace and/or a pair of stud earrings. But sometimes to make an outfit pop, you may want to wear a teardrop or a chandelier earring and depending on the dress or blouse, it may call for you to wear a collar or matinee necklace. Selecting your jewelry should be a fun process. I know it sure is for me! Next month we will talk about the different types or styles of jewelry. I bet you didn’t know that there are several different ways you can rearrange the way you wear some of the jewelry you already have in your wardrobe! Think of the pieces that you already have. Now, combine some of them together. You my friend just created a whole new jewelry set. We will talk about that as well. So, remember, you don’t necessarily have to buy more clothing, buy more jewelry. BIO Crystal Kennedy is a native of Long Island, New York where she was born to Christopher L. My favorite makeup tips and tricks Janvier Guidry I am going to start off with some priming tricks and work my way through each step of makeup. I have always had really larges pores, which becomes a problem when applying foundation because it creates holes in your makeup. One of my lifesavers when priming is to start off with a good moisturizer for your specific skin type, then follow it with a blurring primer. Blurring primer essentially fills in all of those pores on your face and gives you a photo ready and smooth look. My next tip is to always apply powder before your foundation, yes, before. As silly as it may sound, it does wonders for the foundation application and makes for a smoother and fuller look. When applying foundation, always use a brush for the application part then follow behind with a sponge. Next, we will tackle eyebrows. There is so much confusion as to how to properly fill in your brows. As someone with naturally thick brows, if I’m going for an everyday look, brow gel is my go-to. Brow gel allows me to brush in some color to give my brows a fuller look.

If I’m doing my makeup for a night out, I like to use a pomade. A pomade is just a little pot of eyebrow gel and I like to use this with a very thin brush. I use this thin brush and outline from the middle at the bottom and top of my brow to give it a sharp outline and fill it in. Then after the middle part is filled in, I take my brow gel and brush that in at the start of my brows, ultimately giving my brows a cleaner look. As far as mascara goes, do not just go up with it, when applying also apply from the top of your lashes to give them a fuller look and make sure to put focus on the tips of your lashes to elongate them. Next, we will discuss contouring and highlighting. When highlighting, I take an extremely light concealer and put three dots under my eyes, one on either temple, and on my nose and under my lip, then I blend. When contouring, I like to use a darker concealer shade and put that at the tops of my cheekbones and around my

hairline and my jaw line, and blend it. After you blend in all of your concealers, come back with a powdered bronzer and go over what you just contoured to give a more chiseled look. When applying highlight, always apply at the very tops of your cheekbone, not over your blush or contour, so that you get the full glowing effect. These are my favorite makeup tips and tricks, and I hope you all enjoy and try them out.

Spotlight Dr. Teresa Elaine Sanders

“Small class, big results: Safari Small Schools”

Tell me us about yourself.

I’m Dr. Teresa Elaine Sanders. I am a California transplant to Texas and I love it. I spent 20 years working in community Mental Health in Sacramento, California before relocating to Texas in 2005. I have been an educator for 14 years. I am certified K-12 Special Education

I work primarily with students with severe behavior problems and Emotional Disturbance (ED). I love working with this population and my students never cease to amaze me with their academic and creative potential. I am dedicated to ensuring these often-challenging students not only achieve academically, but socially and emotionally as well.

What would you like to spotlight? “My Business.”

Tell us about it. The students I serve are often significantly behind academically and lack social and coping skills needed to be successful in life. In the public-school system, these learners are frequently neglected socially and academically and are very often left behind to fail in school and life. As a human being, mother and educator, I cannot contribute to the failure of children. To combat this unconscionable failure, I developed Safari Small Schools, a fivestudent micro-school designed to meet the unique needs of students who for whatever reason are not thriving in the traditional classroom. Students are taught the way they learn best with flexibility to allow movement, frequent breaks or other accommodations that helps the most fragile students excel.

Tell us something you have overcome or success you have achieved. “I read an excerpt from a soon-to be- released book (Fall 2020) called Ctrl+Alt+Del: Reset Your Mind and Thrive by author Francine E. Gregory. In the book, the author discusses the need to interrupt negative thought processes and resetting the mind in The entire time I have been an educator, I have been alarmed at the state of our Nation’s public schools.” The system did not and does not align with the needs of the students within. I knew I had a passion for children and education and wanted something different for my students, but never felt qualified to create a school or program to meet their needs.

The excerpt I read helped me to see I was on the right track with my desire but I needed to get my thinking in alignment. I learned that fear of failure was the malicious code that kept me from believing I could make a difference. When I conquered the fear, I opened a school.

What would you like to achieve in 2020? “I am looking forward to an awesome year with the first of many classes at Safari Small Schools.”

Spotlight Matt Granados

“Unmotivated is not a character trait but it is a state of mind. A simple conversation can change a state of mind.”

My name is Matt Granados and I am the co-founder and President of Life Pulse Inc. I am a husband to my amazing wife and partner in EVERYTHING I do, Maria as well as a very happy father to Natalie and Zach. I enjoy being a “family man.” Strange family traditions and fun times with them is what I enjoy most.

I have spent my entire life building businesses and it wasn't until the last decade I realized as much as I love growing businesses, I feel most fulfilled when I am growing people. When this realization came, I was able to change my focus and work with as many people as I possibly can. I love doing what I do so for hobbies, I enjoy Golf, Snowboarding, and any other relaxing time with people I care about. But I get maximum fulfillment when I get to tie any of those things with having deeper conversation with the individual, I am doing it with.

Motivate the Unmotivated provides a simple Motivation Formula that works seamlessly and continuously to motivate even the least engaged individual, whether that’s yourself, an employee, a co-worker, a romantic partner, a child, or yes…even a pet!

Finally, a book that gives you applicable, implementable techniques for how to boost motivation in all areas of your life—as well as the lives of others. You know "what" you should do in order to motivate yourself and others. So why don’t you do it? Most likely it is because no one has ever systemized the "how" to what you already know you should do.

To experience consistent results in ourselves and others we need to do one thing: connect actions to outcomes before they are experienced. It’s the value that is recognized when this happens that drives our behaviors and ensures our continued investment in a task or project. Most unmotivated people would never say they are lazy and it turns out most simply lack awareness of the relationship between their actions and their desired ends. Sometimes, they aren’t even sure what it is they value. In order to motivate the unmotivated—whether that’s ourselves, others, or both—we need to strengthen the synapse between actions and outcomes.

Tell me something you have overcome or success you have achieved.

At first when I think of achievements, I start thinking about the stats of the business. Working with companies like Twitter or the United States Air Force to build multimillion-dollar businesses. Yes, these are

achievements that I am very proud of but outside of an interesting talking point or a great testimonial, I don't like to label my success on achievements alone. Instead I like to focus on the path taken while trying to reach the goal.

Being in the field of consulting, I am constantly learning and taking my experiences learning from them. Usually it is when I hear someone else's story, I can grab a new piece of wisdom but in this case, it was my story. The most recent thing in our life that we have had to overcome and work with is the diagnosis of our daughter’s medical condition. Natalie was diagnosed with a rare genetic mutation (PROXYD1 gene) that caused a form of muscular dystrophy.

When we first realized this was a longer-term issue than any parent would want, we tried our best to work on the physical delays she was dealing with. When doing her physical assessment, we were told to do a cognitive test as well. I was against it because she had no mental delays… just physical.

This could have been the biggest mistake we could have made in raising our daughter.

She was half her age physically but over twice her age mentally. My mind was blown with how poorly I was going about this. I wanted to “fix” her “issues” and realized myself and clients do this daily with the people we are managing. This was the day my paradigm shifted. From then on, the philosophy we live by when working with anyone is to manage weaknesses but leverage strengths. Because of this we are using her cognitive advancements to help her understand her physical setbacks… the results have been amazing.

So what was the achievement? I overcame myself. Sometimes I am the barrier between me and the correct answer. Sometimes I am what is holding me back from getting the result I want. Sometimes we need to get out of our own way and our own thoughts and ANYTIME we can do this, I consider it an amazing achievement based on how humans are wired to think.

What would you like to achieve in 2018? (I am assuming you mean 2020) Each year we select one word that represents our focus for the year. 2020’s year for me was GROWTH. Wow what an interesting turn of events with the world coming to a stop early in the year. With fear and uncertainty spinning through the entire world, we had to refocus our goals as well as our clients’

goals. The biggest thing we recognized is we do not need to give up on our goals but we needed to find a new way of achieving this goal.

So, our goal was growth in a world that completely shut down. We needed to change our approach. We went from a focus of sales which leads to growth, to marketing and building content which also leads to growth.

Now that the world seems to be opening back up, we are experiencing growth in a way that we could not have expected at the beginning of the year.

Although we expect to have GROWTH like we stated in the beginning of the year, it looks different than what we expected. The exciting part is I am confident that it will be better than before.

We have a book launch getting great reviews. We have new clients coming on regularly. We have new programs being offered to individuals all over the world. We have lives transforming as they experience our exercises and content.

We are experiencing growth and I cannot wait for the second half of this year to see where the GROWTH (progress) leads us.
