Retreat Scriptures and Questions Session 2: The New Covenant & Our Righteousness Session 2 Read Aloud Scripture: Hebrews 10:12-22 (ESV) 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. 15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, 16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,” 17 then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” 18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. 19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Session 2 Key Scriptures from the Teaching: Hebrews 10:19-23 (ESV)
Therefore, brothers,[c] since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.

because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, Romans 5:19 19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. Romans 10:4 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. 2 Corinthians 5:21 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Romans 4:5 5 And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness,
Session 2 Questions: 1) Do you ever feel yourself trying to relate to God through law-keeping, or your own striving? What are the effects of trying to approach God this way in your life? 2) Hebrews 10 says that the Law was but a shadow of the good things to come. What were these good things that we have now in the New Covenant? 3) Is there anything new about the New Covenant you have learned? What is your favorite part of the New Covenant given to us by Jesus? 4) What areas of your life would change if you began to receive your “rightness” before God rather than try to establish it on your own? 5) Reread 2 Corinthians 5:21. How crazy is it that Jesus himself became sin? Isn’t it even crazier that it says we have become the righteousness of God? Would changing your mindset about yourself to “I am the righteousness of God” change any areas of your daily life?
