BEST ANNUAL COMMUNITY EVENT 1. Benton Franklin Fair & Rodeo 1500 S. Oak St., Kennewick 509-222-3749 www.bentonfranklinfair.com The Benton Franklin Fair & Rodeo has been part of the Tri-City community for 72 years, and people appreciate the annual event. “Members of our community have enjoyed the Best Week of Summer for generations and it is a great honor that the Fair is their favorite event,” said Duane Howard, President of the Benton Franklin Fair & Rodeo Board of Directors. The Fair has become one of the largest in the Northwest, with the highest-grossing youth livestock auction in the state, and the 22nd-ranked rodeo in the nation with the Horse Heaven Round-Up. Fairs are the foundation for agriculture promotion in our society and, as our population continues to shift to a more urban demographic, it is the responsibility of the fair to remind the public of the key role that agriculture and rural communities will continue to play in our economy and daily lives. “In addition to providing a great week of celebration for the community, the Fair has a huge impact on the local economy,” Howard said. “A 2019 study showed the economic output of the event was $18.5 million in Benton County alone.” The Fair’s importance dates back to a history when people loved to get together and celebrate – they are a connecting point of the people and products that showcase our heritage. “I wholeheartedly believe in fairs and what they can do for a community and the participants,” Howard said. Whether you are a lifetime attendee or have never set foot on a fairgrounds, now is the best time to get involved in one of our country’s oldest traditions — and the Best Week of Summer.

BEST CASINO 1. Wildhorse Casino 46510 Wildhorse Blvd., Pendleton 800-654-9453 wildhorseresort.com It takes about an hour to drive from the Tri-Cities to the Wildhorse Resort & Casino in Pendleton. But for most Tri-Citians, it’s well worth the drive, whether they’re spending just a few hours there or looking at a weekend staycation. The Wildhorse was voted Best Casino in the 2020 People’s Choice Awards, and it’s easy to understand why. “Everyone at Wildhorse works so hard to create a great guest atmosphere,” said Diane Long, Director of Marketing for Wildhorse. “A lot of reasons customers keep coming back are the little things, such as our employees remembering customers’ names. It’s a friendly place.” With plenty of things to do. First opened in 1995 – with some modular buildings with some gam-
bling machines – Wildhorse has continually expanded over the years, under the watchful guidance of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR). The CTUIR is a union of three tribes: the Cayuse, Umatilla and Walla Walla. From that simple beginning in 1995, Wildhorse now offers hotel

accommodations with a multi-story tower, an RV park, a cineplex, a golf course, plenty of meeting and convention space, and of course gambling. The CTUIR added a second golf course last year when it purchased th Pendleton Country Club, and it owns 13 restaurants – including Hamley Steakhouse in downtown Pendleton, purchased last year. The resort plans to have a new family entertainment center complet ed by the end of 2020. It will include a 24-lane bowling center, an arcade, and a food court. Further down the line is a plan for a second hotel towe There are plenty of options for people to have all kinds of fun at Wildhorse, whether you gamble or not. “We appreciate our friends in the Tri-Cities,” said Long. “We appreciate them voting for us.”

Offering fresh prime-grade meat that is slow cooked daily and cut to order, Porter’s offers an array of options for the customer looking for a quality meal that will leave you licking your plate. Porter’s has its roots in a food truck, where brothers Porter and Reed Kinney began serving their meats. After five years, they turned the eatery into a brick and mortar store — first in The Parkway in Richland, then on Columbia Center Boulevard in Kennewick. They added a third location in Pasco on Sandifur Parkway in November. The menu features meats like prime grade beef brisket and sandwiches such as the Hogzilla. Not to be overlooked are sides like fresh dill pickles and gouda mac and cheese. Add in desserts that include “Kate’s Banana Pudding,” made by Porter’s wife, and “Mom’s Molasses Bar,” made by Porter and Reed’s mom – which also can be found being sold at the Richland Farmer’s Market when it is open. If you have a hankering for Porter’s, plan for an early dinner – their menu regularly sells out.

Bacon and eggs are the main breakfast staples at Just Joel’s. Also popular are the loaded biscuits and gravy, the Sir James omelet, and the breakfast burrito. What sets Watson apart is his menu and that the food is prepared unlike any place in the Tri-Cities. Watson and fellow cooks Jesse Garza and Russell Hoglen create their masterpieces on a 3-foot grill in the smallest kitchen in town. The key, is that everything is homemade. “It’s personal,” Watson said. “Everything matters. The love I get pumps me up. Who knew this would happen?” Just Joel’s also offers specials, which he promotes on Facebook. A recent favorite is the bacon encrusted French toast with mixed berries and whipped cream. The way you layer the ingredients on a hamburger affects the taste. The staff at Foodies has that down to an art, according to Tri-City burge connoisseurs. “When we came up with our menu we decided to build burgers in multiple ways,” general manager Tony Angelo said. “How we layer the veggies, if the sauce should go on the top or the bottom. We have been able to dial that in with each burger.” That attention to detail makes a difference to the taste buds and enhances the flavor of the burger. Foodies offers nine different burgers. The New Yorker (two 1/3-pound patties, 1/2-pound of pastrami, swiss cheese and sauerkraut, among other things) is a favorite — but people always have one question once it arrive at the table. “People always ask how they are they going to eat it,” Angelo said. “I tell them, one bite at a time.” The All-American burger also checks all the boxes, and is Angelo’s favorite. “The simplicity is what I enjoy most,” he said. Foodies also offers burgers with bacon, mushrooms, spicy peppers and the Texan, which is served with bacon, barbecue sauce, chili and onions on grilled Texas toast. A veggie burger also is available, as is a gluten-free bun. “People come out of their way to eat our food,” Angelo said. “We do it right with quality food.”

Friendly staff, good food, healthy portions, and everything is homemade. The small cafe in east Kennewick holds just 24 people hip to hip inside the 900 square-foot building, and about as many at the tables outside, but that is the appeal — family dining. “We serve people from all over the world,” owner Joel Watson said. “We had a wedding rehearsal here. We had one customer dine with us 320 times last year. We have really, really cool customers.” Watson, who said he is more like Tony Soprano than Tony Danza, just wants to feed people, whether it’s breakfast, his special carne asada burrito or one of his award-winning soups. And, there is no judgement if you want to have pie for breakfast. Watson also is a firm believer in giving back to the community. He teamed with other local businesses to pay off student lunch debt, has done coat drives in the winter, and sponsored a youth baseball team. “For me, it’s personal,” Watson said. “Everything matters. I am in a position to be a giver.”

Founded in 1952 in Hoquiam on the est coast of Washington, Casa Mia under Phil Bellofatto aided in bringing hat cultural heritage and food tradition the Pacific Northwest. Casa Mia has nce spread across the state, with Casa Mia opening its first franchise in Kenneick in 1993. Back when they first opened, Italian od was predominately consumed in the rm of marinara-style spaghetti in a can.
TRI-CITY HERALD
Even harder to imagine is a time when pizza wasn’t a primary facet of the American diet’s melting pot, but that was the case when Casa Mia first opened. The restaurant quickly changed that in all of the communities where it opened up shop, bringing hand-tossed pizza dough made fresh daily, topped with six-hours-simmered sauce derived from Phil’s own recipe and baked to perfection in a brick hearth. Today, Casa Mia continues to carry on Phil’s legacy and focus on tradition through the classic recipes that have led to the restaurant’s ongoing success.

Isidro and his siblings came together and started the restaurant. Mom was the chef and the others worked as servers. At that time, 80 percent of the staff consisted of immediate family members. It was exciting. “We giggled through our very first order,” said Ortiz on the restaurant’s website, “and celebrated ‘en grande’ when we opened our second restaurant.” And now, the family has three restaurant locations, one in each of the TriCities. Today, customers enjoy the family feel on which the restaurant was built. Fresh guacamole is made table-side and there’s a fresh salsa bar with homemade tortillas, plus live music every Thursday through Sunday. And margaritas “as big as your head.” “We have a very good, loyal staff that keeps that engine running,” says Isidro. All of the recipes are Isidro’s mother’s from the small town the family came from in the state of Michoacán, Mexico. This is the sixth consecutive year the restaurant has won this category.

BEST OUTDOOR DINING 1. LU LU Craft Bar + Kitchen 606 Columbia Point Drive, Richland 509-713-7880 www.lulucraftbar.com LU LU Craft Bar + Kitchen customers taste the love of local. This family-run operation’s simple philosophy of keeping it delicious, homemade, and local with an elegant twist, keeps LU LU holding the reins for the best outdoor dining award. Cindy Goulet opened the eatery on Columbia Point in 2016, bringing along her roots from the family farm — Easterday Farms. Her daughter Paige Goulet oversees daily operations. While taking in the view of the Columbia River on a sunny day with a glass of wine from the extensive wine menu of 80 local selections, customers can almost imagine a faint oink while
eating the Pig Candy for how close the pig farm is from the restaurant — a mere 30 miles away and operated within the family. The beef served in the restaurant has the family touch being raised by family members. Onions and potatoes also come from the family farm, while much of the other produce is delivered from a tight circle of trusted growers. A from-scratch menu can make anyone drool and a happy hour with a cold brew delight the afterwork crowd on the patio.
Since 1998, Tim and Saundra Curet and crew have been serving up pizza, breadsticks, specialty sandwiches, wings, burgers, a fresh salad bar, local wines, and 21 on-tap brews. In spite of being located in TriCities’ oft-overlooked fourth city, Brick House has claimed the top spot in the People’s Choice Awards seven years out of eight — proving location doesn’t always matter if the food is worth the drive. Their pizza dough is made fresh daily, including gluten-free crust, with five sizes to suit all appetites: Small, Medium, Large, Giant, Colossal.
The classic red sauce is Tim’s own recipe, but for the more adventurous palate, Brick House also offers BBQ , chipotle BBQ , roasted garlic, Thai peanut, pesto, and cusabi. The Pickle Face is their most popular pizza, featuring salami, pepperoni, Italian sausage, and a dill pickle twist, as well as their true meat lovers Big Bull Sandwich. From the owners: “Brick House Pizza would like to thank all our loya customers and the entire community for giving us the opportunity to serve you. We are so thankful for this recog nition. Sirloins, which come in four sizes, are the most popular cut, followed by the ribeye. “We have people who come in to eat five times a week,” Osborne said. “It’s a home-cooked meal and someone to talk to. Our staff is incredible — they make a difference. One of our dishwashers has been here since we opened.” The Kennewick location was the first in Washington (the Spokane location opened in January), opening in 2011. athletes and coaches have taken a liking to Miller in the year he’s been telling their stories for KEPR. He credits that to the relationships he’s been able foster since he arrived in April 2019. “Just being social with the kids, coaches and community,” Miller said of his appeal. “If you have that connection, things will take care of themselves. You have to show them you care about them, and make sure you give them the right coverage. Having that relationship is key.” Miller, 26, began his broadcasting career by happenstance at BYU Hawaii. He had gone to the college to play basketball, but a knee injury derailed his playing career his freshman year. “I had to find something I wanted to do,” he said. “I like public speaking and writing. I started doing it at the university full time.” He also gets pointers from his dad, Chris, who has been a sports broadcaster for 25 years. He currently works for NBC Sports in the Washington D.C. area. “He has been supportive from the beginning,” Miller said. “He watches my broadcasts online or on Twitter and gives me advice. If I hadn’t gotten injured, I don’t know what I’d be doing.”

BEST VETERINARIAN 1. Horse Heaven Hills Pet Urgent Care 4309 W. 27th Place, Bldg. C, Ste. 104, Kennewick 509-581-0647 horseheavenhillspeturgentcare.com When you walk into an exam room at Horse Heaven Hills Pet Urgent Care you’ll see a plush couch and chairs as well as a working TV with movie option. Pets won’t be going onto a sterile metal table — instead they will be examined on an ottoman. “We try to emulate a home environment. We’re trying to essentially mimic a comfortable, caring environment. The patients won’t have weird smells or distractions.” Staff say that patients are calmer, their heart rates are better if they feel relaxed. Not only the pet patients, but the pet parents benefit when they feel like they are in a well-decorated room while often dealing with difficult health issues or end-of-life care. That level of comfort, and that this veterinarian clinic offers the convenience of the only daytime walk-in urgent care veterinarian in Tri-Cities, is what has set it apart to gain the top choice among readers. It is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day – no exceptions.

It’s a sweet win for the chain to pic up during its 40th anniversary, said ownership team member Gary Absalonson. “We are humbled,” he said. The category has sometimes been called “home goods,” and focuses on decorative and functional items for the home. Founder and owner Mark Walker and his wife Pam opened their first store in 1980. Kennewick’s store opened in 1986. “And Mattress” was later added to the name because of the chain’s increasing focus on selling mattresses. Absalonson said the company is working to facilitate the needs of people during the pandemic. While Washington’s shops remain closed to customers, he said online orders can be fulfilled. will provide a stunning ensemble that will have you stand out from anyone in a crowd. The mission is simple for this shabby chic boho women’s clothing shop — offer excellent customer service and build relationships. That is what owner Amanda Kuhn believes keeps customers repeatedly coming back. Kuhn worked in retail for 21 years before opening the store in The Parkway in Richland in 2013. She searches deep in the fashion industry to find stand-out items that customers won’t be able to find elsewhere. And she buys six of each item, then that’s it. They are out of stock. While she focuses on clothing, she does have some jewelry hand-created by local designers and occasionally handbags and shoes – but only if they catch the discerning eye of the owner. Kuhn says her door is always open and wants to give customers the one-
