BEST CASINO 1. Crazy Moose Casino 510 S. 20th Ave., Pasco 509-542-8580 pascocasino.com Crazy Moose Casino in Pasco has a little something for everyone. They feature Las Vegas-style gaming, including all your favorite games like Blackjack and high card flush, a great sports-viewing package, and fantastic food. “We have a great atmosphere, friendly staff, great food, and great gaming opportunities,” says General

Manager Harold Walford. Not to mention great customer service, “We pride ourselves in doing that well,” he adds. Crazy Moose, part of the Washington Gold Casinos family, opened in 2001. Since then 10 percent of all gross winnings goes back to the city of Pasco, which amounts to about $720,000 each month. Even novices are welcome at the casino. Walford suggests starting with the amazing food to check out the atmosphere, and then maybe try the sports viewing if you are new to gambling. Stop in and visit them MondayTuesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or anytime Wednesday through Sunday when they are open 24 hours.

The champion is still Canyon Lakes Course, which has won this category all seven years. And there is a reason for it. The staff never rests on its laurels. Mike Lundgren, general manager and co-owner (along with Terry Graff), is always looking to improve the golfing experience. For instance, just buying a membership at the locally owned and operated Kennewick course (since 1981) gives a person a lot of options. “At Canyon Lakes, you pay for what you want,” said Lundgren. That could be doing a $100 a month membership, or a twilight membership, or a season pass. There are several ways to enjoy playing golf. In fact, all 2019 yearly memberships are already running at 50 percent off. Non-members are always welcome at this public course. The course has daily specials during

the week, including Military Monday (military personnel and veterans play at 50 percent off) and Senior Tuesday (People 50 and over get 50 percent off). In addition, Lundgren and his staff want to be inclusive to non-golfers. A social membership for 2019 costs $100. For that $100, a person gets $100 Clubhouse credit, discounts in the golf shop and the Duck Pond Restaurant & Bar. Or a person could use the membership to pay for the special events the club hosts in the Champions Room (Crabfest, Easter Day Brunch, Mother’s Day Brunch, Oktoberfest, Wine events, New Year’s Eve Party, and more). On the golf course side, Canyon Lakes has been busy with improvements. The staff has flattened the tee box areas, and replaced all benches and tee box signs. They’re currently working on replacing some of the fairway bunkers. And they have plans to repave, replace and/or add cart paths in the near future. It's no wonder Canyon Lakes is the most popular course in the Tri-Cities.

that is slow cooked daily and cut to order, Porter’s offers an array of options for the customer looking for great quality BBQ in a place that, according to owner Porter Kinney, “feels like home.” Porter’s family environment translates through its history, when brothers Porter and Reed Kinney started a food truck that five years later would turn into two brick and mortar locations, one in The Parkway in Richland, the other on Columbia Center Boulevard in Kennewick. The restaurant was also featured on a nationally televised program earlier this year. Even before that, Porter’s is so beloved by its customers that they can sell out of items before the end of the day, but when you choose to not cut corners and make top-quality food, it becomes part of the game. The menu features delicious meats like Dino Ribs and Brisket, unique and mouth-watering sauces, savory sides like Gouda Mac and Cheese, and desserts like Kate’s Banana Pudding made by Porter’s wife, and Mom’s Molasses Bar, made by Porter and Reed’s mother, so there’s no question that Porter’s Real Barbecue is the best barbecue in town.

BEST CATERING 1. CG Public House

9221 W. Clearwater Ave., Kennewick 509-783-0128 www.cgpublichouseandcatering.com

CG Public House celebrated its 40th anniversary in January. One of the changes to CG Public House is cutting

It all began back in 1979 when Chuck and Mabel Wyatt opened their western inspired diner, Wyatt’s Pancake Corral, at the corner of Highway 395 and Vista Street in Kennewick. It quickly became a well-liked hometown hangout and was remodeled in 1984 to facilitate the growing clientele. The modernized eatery was renamed The Country Gentleman. When the Wyatt’s daughter Shirley Simmons and husband Steve Simmons became partners in 1996, Shirley added off-premise catering to the ever expanding operation. The success of the catering business was so exceptional that it caused the restaurant to outgrow its kitchen. In December 2006, the restaurant and extensive catering business expanded to its current location -9221 West Clearwater, in Kennewick. 11 years later, Country Gentleman has now evolved through ongoing community growth and support. The eatery has transformed to CG Public House and Catering. Under the leadership of son, Kyle Simmons, the Trendy CG Public House offers tasty new fare for foodies, crafty cocktails and bountiful beers. CG Catering continues to offer the same highly acclaimed menu and service as they did under the Country Gentleman brand. We just celebrated our 40th year in business

Shirley Simmons has been around the restaurant business her entire life. Her parents, Chuck and Mabel Wyatt, owned the Pancake Corral, which opened in 1979 at the corner of Highway 395 and Vista Way in Kennewick. The public loved the Pancake Corral and in 1984, with increasing customers, it was remodeled and renamed The Country Gentleman. In 1996, Shirley and her husband Steve became partners and added catering, which was so successful that they outgrew their kitchen and moved to a new building at 9221 W. Clearwater Ave. In 2017, their son Kyle modernized the restaurant and called it CG Public House. CG Public House includes the restaurant, bar and outside patio. Some customer favorites include: House Ground Burgers, Cougar Gold Mac and Cheese, Monte Cristo, Chicken and Waffles, and House-Made Chicken Pot

Pie. Prime rib is served every Thursday to Saturday nights and they serve up a great breakfast, which includes their Adult Pop Tarts and Mini-Maple Bacon Donuts. They use local ingredients wherever possible and are known for excellent service and dependability. In 2018, CG Public House catered 3,100 events ranging from 10 – 4,000 people. During peak season, they may be catering up to 30 events a day. Be sure to follow CG Public House on Facebook and Instagram for photos and specials! There are no owers on the table.” The restaurant is open just Wednesay through Saturday nights. Each night’s menu is different. For nstance, on Saturday, your choice is ther Baked Ziti, or Rigatoni with meatballs and Italian sausage. A small ortion will feed two people, a large ill feed 4-5 people, and extra large ill feed 6-7. “The recipes were from 1918 when my family first came over from Italy,” aid Aitoro. The other thing people enjoy, Aitoro ays, is the character of the place with ictures all over the walls. It’s Aitoro’s job to go from table to ble to talk with customers. “Somebody has to explain all of hese pictures,” he said. Graze serves up mouthwatering sandwiches, soups and salads.

““What’s your favorite meal at Graze?” That’s a question owner John Lastoskie is often asked, and he doesn’t have a simple answer. There are so many options, and “a lot of it has to do with how I’m feeling,” he said. If he wants something lighter, he’ll go for the quinoa salad. Or if he’s looking for something more over-the-top, he’ll go for the pastrami sandwich or a torta. That’s the beauty of Graze — its creativity and variety. And its emphasis on freshness. “We make everything ourselves,” said Lastoskie, who started Graze with his wife. “We try to make sure we incorporate seasonal (foods),” he added. That means plenty of asparagus right now, then zucchini and so on. Graze has two locations in Walla Walla and two in the Tri-Cities. Lastoskie said he’s also looking to open a drive-thru-only version in the TriCities.

BEST STEAKHOUSE 1. Texas Roadhouse E 7x winner! E 835 N. Columbia Center Blvd., #C, Kennewick 509-783-1288 www.texasroadhouse.com A slogan like “Legendary Food, Legendary Service” could be hard to live up to — unless you’re talking Texas Roadhouse. The lively steakhouse again topped the list this year, and Steve Dunn, local managing partner,

says it’s a badge of honor for the restaurant. “We don’t cut corners on our food quality or our service,” said Dunn. “We back up our legendary food and service.” Texas Roadhouse focuses on making food from scratch — making between 2,000 and 5,000 rolls a day — and employs a butcher to cut almost all steaks on site. In service, they keep each server to a maximum of three tables, each one with a bucket of peanuts free for the cracking. Texas Roadhouse focuses not only on its food and service but also on giving back to the community through its peanut sales, donations — many of them edible — for nonprofits and use of the building and parking lots. “It takes time. You have to sink your roots deep,” Dunn said. “We really want to be a part of the community and give back. It’s been a blessing.” The Kennewick location is the only one in the state, and Dunn said it’s been a great fit.

The estate winery grows around 30 varietals, which means it grows all the grapes it makes into wines. The winery has four vineyards, which include red and white varietals. All bottling is done on-site. The tasting room is open late, mainly because of the Taverna, Girnus said. “You can come in and start at the tasting bar and do some tasting,” she said. “You can order food there, and then you can move to a table and have a five-star dining experience.” Some well-known wines include the Bordeaux Red Blend and Mourvèdre, Tagaris Winery’s signature single varietal. The winemaker keeps the restaurant in mind when he is creating new wines, Girnus said. Servers also are able to help suggest food and wine pairings.

BEST WEDDING/EVENT VENUE 1. Canyon Lakes Golf Course 3700 W. Canyon Lakes Drive, Kennewick 509-582-3736 www.canyonlakesgolfcourse.com After finishing second in 2018, Canyon

Not only is Canyon Lakes the Tri-Cities' favorite golf course, it also has been voted Best Wedding and Event Venue.

Lakes Golf Course is back on top as the Tri-Cities’ Best Wedding/Event Venue. That makes it three of the last four years at the top spot. What makes the place special is that you can have a wedding outside by the course or at your church, but bring the party inside the clubhouse. The Champions Room has 3,000 square feet. “And it’s always 72 degrees,” said Mike Lundgren, co-owner and general manager at Canyon Lakes. The event center was built in 2007. “You’re always looking for a different source of revenue,” Lundgren said. Since then, the dining area has been remodeled. “And we just remodeled the bar,” Lundgren added. Other improvements include painting the outside of the clubhouse, updated lighting and a plan to re-line the parking lot soon. The course is currently booking weddings. Lundgren said Canyon Lakes has about 30 weddings or parties a year, and, “we have to turn away another 30 or 40 weddings.”

The course does its own catering for events and has a fully-stocked bar. “We do everything here,” said Lundgren. “You can park just one time. You can get your meals or what you want to drink here. And we can tweak things. If you want a dance floor, we can put one out there.” It's not just weddings. The course also hosts special event nights during the course of the year, open to the public: Crabfest, Easter Day Brunch, Mother's Day Brunch, Oktoberfest, Wine Event, New Year's Eve Party and more. It is, Lundgren says, a one-stop shop. "Our staff is on site, so we can fix any problems there are,” he said. “We’re locally owned and operated.”

Fred’s Appliance in Kennewick has “a little something for everybody” looking to upgrade a kitchen, replace a laundry set or outfit a home, said store manager Brett Steinauer. A basic refrigerator? And if they don’t have a piece in stock, they can get it. With more than 30,000 square feet of space between its showroom and warehouse, Fred’s Appliance is home to the largest selection of appliances in the Tri-Cities. “We do inexpensive (pieces) all the way to high-end,” Steinauer said. The store also does appliance repair. “It’s really about the people who shop here,” Steinauer said. “We really want the experience to be positive for people, so they can come in here and be put in front of what they want or need.”

As Jason put it, “I’m a one-man show that tries to help who I can.” Out of high school, Jason began doing mechanic’s work and has always worked on cars. One day he decided to do his own thing and open his own shop where he can give vehicles and customers the proper attention they deserve. BEST DENTIST 1. Dr. Michael Pratt Family First Dental 419 N. Yelm St., Kennewick 509-783-1000 www.callfamilyfirst.com Six years ago, Dr. Michael Pratt came along at the right time for Family First Dental. Pratt — a Kamiakin High School graduate who did his undergraduate work at Brigham Young University before completing his dental training at the University of Washington — stepped into a practice that saw a number of longtime dentists step into retirement. It was Pratt who would take over helping those retired dentists’ patients. That can be a touchy situation. But it’s also why he was voted top dentist. “As they retired, I stepped in,” Pratt said. “It’s all about listening to the patient. It’s about getting to know them. That was the dance I had to learn.” Pratt praises the support team around him. “I have great assistants and front office staff,” he said. He also has a great set of skills, such as specialized training in implant placement, laser usage, Invisalign and 3D imaging. But first and foremost, the priority is patient comfort. “I take the philosophy of trusting that these patients are like your family,” he said. In other words, make sure they get the treatment that you’d want your parents, your siblings, your spouse or your children to get. And it’s his enthusiasm for what he does that stands out. He talked of a 16-year-old boy who had lost a lot of teeth through rot.

“He couldn’t smile,” said Pratt. “He’d always look down at the floor.” But Pratt performed a lot of dental work on the teenager, who ended up being able to smile again. “There is nothing like changing somebody’s smile, and in turn changing their life,” he said. “It’s so great to see their whole demeanor change.” It’s what Pratt does on a daily basis.

BEST FLORIST 1. Arlene’s Flowers and Gifts 1177 Lee Blvd., Richland 509-946-7676 www.arlenesflowers.net Arlene’s has been in business 42 years. What’s the key to the longetivity? “I would say it’s our awesome customers,” says owner Barronelle Stutzman. “We just like to custom design for people.” Arlene’s has been in the family for decades. It was opened in 1977 by Don Douglas and his mother, Arlene. “But my mom bought it from Arlene,” said Stutzman. “Then I bought it from my mother. Now, my daughters are thinking about buying it from me.” That would make it a third generation family business. Why not? Arlene’s was selling flowers and corsages to a third generation of high school promgoers in May. Stutzman says the younger generations don’t purchase as many flowers nowadays. So a big part of the store’s business is sympathy service. For instance, Stutzman and her staff will talk to people and find out what a recently departed person liked to do. “For instance, if he was a fisherman, we might put a fishing pole in the arrangement,” she said. “I’d like to think our customer service is a big key.” One of the big joys for Stutzman and her staff is to use their creativity. “We want to take what they have in their mind, then deliver what they want,” she said. The idea is to be a florist for a customer from their birth through to their death. “We don’t just want to be a florist,” Stutzman said. “We want to be your personal florist.”

BEST HEALTH & FITNESS CLUB 1. Tri-City Court Club 1350 N. Grant St., Kennewick 509-783-5465 www.tricitycourtclub.com Started in 1976, Tri-City Court Club is one of the longest-running clubs in the region. And there’s a lot to do in the 126,000-square-foot facility. Stephen Wallenfels, TCCC’s marketing and IT director, likens the place to a cruise ship. “It has a little bit of everything for everyone,” he said.

For instance, eight indoor tennis courts, three racquetball courts, more than 100 fitness and aquatics fitness classes per week, a fitness center, free weight room, a cardio center, a 35-foo indoor rock wall, programs for kids ages 6 to 13, free child care for kids up to 5, a full-size basketball court, two indoor heated pools, two indoor jacuz zis, and adults-only outdoor hot tub, separate sauna and steam rooms, and the ever-popular SpashDown Cove Water Park. General manager Janelle Lujan Klashke says owners Carl and Linda Cadwell believe in a healthy lifestyle. “Their whole goal in life is to look to improve people’s quality of life,” she said. The club focuses on the family, so that while mom and dad might come to work out, there are programs for th kids. “Second, we’re always looking for constant ways to improve,” said Wallenfels. For instance, the club just had a sof opening of the new Recovery Zone. It a place that has all the cool new toys the fitness industry is using for recovering after your workout: NormaTec sleeves for leg and arm recovery, oxygen, massage chairs and an infrared sauna to do yoga in are among just a few of the highlights. A third reason this facility is so well liked is that there is the longevity of it employees who are invested in what they do. Wallenfels, for example, has worked there for 36 years. But there are many others who have worked there for 10 o more years. “We have 40 full-time employees, and 210 part-timers,” said Klashke. Finally, the TCCC staff believes in being good citizens. “We hold four to five blood drives a year,” said Wallenfels, of working with the American Red Cross. so with Joe Peterson Insurance, Schell said. “We try to educate our clients regarding insurance. We really listen to them to tailor a program and find the best way to protect their assets,” she said. In addition to its main office in Kennewick, the company already has locations in Richland, Walla Walla and Salem, Oregon.

BEST TIRE SHOP 1. Les Schwab Tire Center Multiple Mid-Columbia locations www.lesschwab.com Les Schwab’s tire company had modest beginnings in Prineville, Ore., under the name of OK Rubber Welders Tire Store. Customer service and choice are top priorities at Les Schwab. Customers experience exemplary customer service as employees run out to their cars to greet them. The showroom is designed so employees can educate customers on the differences between products, ensuring that they get what they need. At Les Schwab, doing the right thing matters, whether it’s by customers and the community. Schwab believed in supporting the neighborhoods where his employees live. This practice continues today as local Les Schwabs offer support to 4-H groups, Little League and county fairs. Owner Danny Archibald said Archibald’s was founded on providing a better used car buying experience. Though he said it helps that he and his team are “super picky about what we sell,” and offer the lowest prices in

town, Archibald said their dealership’s success is thanks to their no-pressure, no sleight of hand customer service approach. “We treat people the way we want to be treated always, no matter what,” he said. Apparently, it’s working for them; Archibald said 46 percent of their customers are repeat buyers, a number he said is unheard of in the industry. “It means we’re held to a higher standard, but that motivates us to find ways to shine and continue to ask how we can differentiate ourselves from the typical car dealership.”

Gage Boulevard opened its doors in 1995, and was joined in 2009 by a Southridge location on 3711 Plaza Way. Led by medical directors Dr. Laura Serreyn, Dr. Brynne Lyle and Hospital Administrator Brian Conrad, they credit a dedicated and educated staff for their success. Along with trying to make pets more

comfortable, the hospitals have tried to make it easier for people. Both locations are open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. BEST JEWELRY STORE 1. Van’s Jewelry 3120 W. Kennewick Ave., Kennewick 509-783-9861 Luoc and Trang Van Nguyen are no strangers to being named the top jewelers in the Tri-City region. After dropping to second place in 2018, Van’s Jewelry is back on top in the People’s Choice awards this year. That gives Van’s the top spot six of seven years as this area’s top jewelry store. Luoc says they’re celebrating their 35th year in the business too.

“I think people like us. We work hard – really hard,” Luoc said. Luoc came to the U.S. from Vietnam shortly after the end of the Vietnam War in 1973, with barely a dime in his pocket. But through his tenacity and diligence, his efforts paid off. He developed a passion for jewelry making while working at McVicker’s in Richland, which inspired him to open his own shop. Trang, also an immigrant from Vietnam, came into Luoc’s shop one day with a piece of jewelry needing repair, and the rest is history. Today, the store carries an impressive array of high-end, high-quality products from venerable brands. They are well known for their diamonds. “We stock only the highest quality,” Luoc asserted. Their custom design work is also a unique facet of the business, which

Luoc has a particular passion for. “He loves to see happiness on the customer’s face when they look at their piece,” Trang said. It’s a fast turn-around too — usually only one or two days. That includes jewelry repair, or replacing batteries in watches. While the couple won’t be doing this forever (they hope family will take over one day), they’re not ready to step away just yet. “I like to work,” said Luoc. “And I love the people.” And the people love him and his family.
