Left, Left, Left, 5-6-78…Palms sweating, hearts racing, the crowd cheering as they dance their hearts out on the dance floor. The Granger High Excaliburs are known for their big smiles, cool costumes, their pulled back hair, and of course, their dance ability. The team has been hard at work and preparing for competition season. They started practice before summer started and they continue practice throughout the school year, arriving at 6 a.m. on “A” days and having two after school practices a week. Aside from being able to dance, to be an Excalibur you must maintain a 2.5 GPA with no F’s and wake up at 5 a.m., or sometimes earlier, on competition days. The Excaliburs not only compete, but they also perform at school assemblies and halftimes at sporting events. At competitions, they compete in 3 main categories: Military, Dance, Prop, and at some competitions, Kick. In military it is about being sharp, tight, precise and strong. In dance, it is about technique. In prop, it is about how you use and utilize the object. And in kick it is about, well, kicks. The Excaliburs are coached by Adeena Lago and Nicole Rutherford. There are 19 girls on the team this year with the officers being: Lauryn Zupan(12)-President, Laurie Carlson(12)1st Vice President, Danielle Jacketta(12)-2nd Vice President, Janessa Dapp(11)-Secretary, and Cassie Bowles(11)-Historian/Publicist. Their competitions for the year are as follows: Bountiful Invitational on December 20, 2008 at Bountiful High School Falcon Classic on January 10, 2009 at Clearfield High School REGION VI COMPETITION on January 22, 2009 at Cottonwood High School 4A State Competition on January 30, 2009 at Utah Valley University. Try-outs for the 2009-2010 team will be held in March 2009 for all you sophomore and junior girl. If you have any questions, see Adeena Lago in room 118. Make sure to come out in your red attire and Granger gear to support your Excaliburs at the Region VI competition, where they will be going up against the following teams in our region: The Cottonwood High Chaparrals The Cyprus High Spinnakers The Murray High Spartonians The Olympus High Athenians The West High Oestanas

Dear Lancy The secret to getting good grades
Do you have a problem, or just need advice? Let Lancy know. Just write to Lancy, place it in locker 931, and she may answer you in the Tri-Color-Times Dear Lancy, Should I have to be open to everyone and always share my feelings? Or can I be closed and keep things bottled up? -Anonymous Dear Anonymous, How you react is your own decision. Your voice- and not everyone has to be in your business. It is up to you to decide who to talk to if something is bothering you. Try not to keep yourself bottled up though, it’s not healthy. When I have problems, I know the people I can go to and get good advice. In school, teachers are a good resource, and so are older friends who have been in your situation before. They can give you some really good advice. <3 Lancy Dear Lancy, I’m dating five girls and they all want me. But I don’t know which one to choose! They’re all great girls! Help me choose the one! -Stuck in the middle Dear Stuck, In my opinion, dating multiple people at our age is a good thing. By dating I mean hanging out with people and getting to know
them. Statistics show that only 23% of high school relationships last through marriage and do not end in a divorce. If you think about it, you are still a kid. We’re all in our adolescence; you will change dramatically in your maturity level and what you like in the next couple years alone! We still all have feelings though. Relationships usually come with a feeling of wanting. If you feel you have to choose the right girl though go for the one that you can be yourself with, Choose the girl that gets along with your friends and family and is someone who you can joke with. I can guarantee that she will be the one who would be the best girlfriend for you. <3 Lancy
If you have a cell phone, then this article is for you. Have you ever wondered how you can get better grades? How about finding a way to stop getting distracted in classes? Chris Roth (11) decided “Turning in your work in on time and arriving on time gets you a good grade.” There are many solutions that are available, but one stands out the most for high school students, get rid of your cell phones. Sure cell phones can’t pop popcorn, but they sure can change your grade, depending on how you use it. “Ever since my cell phone got taken away, it seems that I get better grades and am able to pay attention in class,” said Candy Tumupopo (11). Sure having a cell phone can be pretty cool, but on the contrary it derails your attention and thus gets you lost in the middle of a lesson. “I guess getting a text message in class is kind of hard to ignore and also when you don’t reply is kind of rude,” said Cali Faumuina. Cell phones are actually not allowed to be in class so think about turning it off when you enter class. “Cell phones are very helpful depending on how you use it,” said Melanie Nelson (10) who also explains that she uses it for emergencies only. It’s very hard to ignore

Some kids without cell phones do have better grades then some students who do have cell phones because it seems that having a cell phone is too much of a tempting delicacy. “Life without a cell phone would be very hard because I would want to contact other people, unless the person was next to me.” Said Elizabeth Medina (12). How much do you know about about Granger?
Granger high has been around for a long time. “Granger first opened in 1958”, said Mrs. Brown. The history of our school is based mainly on Arthurian legend. A committee was appointed to come up with our school colors, our song and mascot before the school was even built. Ms. Woodward explained the history in detail.
Our school colors are Crimson red Colombia blue and silver grey. The name of our school’s newspaper comes from these three colors: The Tri-Color Times. These colors were also chosen because they were on Lancelot’s shield. Lancelot was a legendary lancer in the medieval times (a lancer is a mounted warrior). That is how we got our mascot: Sir Lancer. The yearbook is called the shield. Shields were used by knights in the legends of Arthur. The shield that a knight represents who they were and what family they were from. Our schools drill team carries the name Excalibur’s (The Excalibur was King Arthur’s sword). Our football field called the Jousting Field also refers to Arthurian legend. A jousting field was used as a test of honor for the knights who would compete. Stonehenge
Our school used to call each grade level a certain name, seniors were Knights, juniors the Squires, and sophomores were called Pages. Each year was a step towards “knighthood” or graduation. Now we do not call each grade level these names any more perhaps it might have been forgotten. But we still keep most of these traditions alive. Tradition is important because if it is kept alive it can be carried on for generations.
is also our cafeteria which is a famous Celtic religious area and is also used as a meeting place for knights. When Manasas Campos (12) and Nichole Chatwin(12) were asked about how much they knew about our school they knew some things but not all. When asked, Nichole Chatwin knew what our drill team was called, also our football field and cafeteria was
called. She also knew our mascot’s name and the colors of our school but, when asked when our school was first open she said 1959. That was the year of the first graduating class, but it was close to when the school was first opened which was 1958. When asked the same questions, Manasas campos did not know that the lunchroom and football field had special names.

From stern to mean Ugly sweaters, There is no such thing as a mean teacher a Granger High. It’s simple: any person who steps onto Lancer property can’t ever have a frown on their face. It’s next to impossible! Excuse the sorry attempt at a joke. We all have bad days, students and teachers alike. It does seem, however, some teachers have a bad day, everyday. “Fockel… she has an attitude problem. She just needs to control how she perceives” said, Jessica Matson(12). “I was late to class one day and she made me sit in back of the class and wouldn’t let me participate in anything all period.” In another interview, the student wished to be kept unidentified. We will call him Anonymous Junior stated “Gaskins is way too controlling. She calls me slacker trash every time she sees me.” Anonymous Junior then asked to hear what the other students had suggested for a ‘mean’ teacher. After explaining that I’d asked a few students to name these teachers, I recited a small list that included Fockel, Biggar, Doutre, Gaskins, and Folster. To truly see what makes a mean teacher you have to evaluate what
Volume LI, Issue 5
specifically makes a cool teacher. Is it when a teacher will let you listen to your I-pod? When they walk right past you when you’re texting a friend? When they let you chat all the time or let you sleep? All those things make it easy to chill out and relax in class. It does, on the other hand, make it really hard to learn. Does this indicate that a rude teacher is one that enforces the rules, and if any
punishment that a student gets for these misbehaviors is exactly what he/she deserves? This may be unsettling for students to hear, yet these stories do include some wrong doing. Whether the punishment for their actions are reasonable or otherwise, you have to consider, if the rules weren’t broken would there be any mean teachers?

and, not only, engage in something new, but also entertaining. “Think of the cowboy theme,” says Ms. Oliver, “Not everyone has clothes for those kind of themes. But for the ugly sweater, I’m sure everyone has an ugly one in their closet somewhere.” When you have a pair of jeans, a shirt or a pair of shoes that you enjoy, we often wear them too much. Those ugly clothes do not get worn enough. Mrs. Robinson has said, “I think we need a break because everyone is stressing from the holidays. This ugly sweater day, should be fun for us.” Ms. Oliver and I, invite you to participate in Ugly Sweater Day.

What happened to RAIN club
should not have mattered that a leading majority of the club was gay, but the morals and general ideas the club represented. All people are unique in their own ways. The idea of a club is to bring them together
to form goals and work on them. We really need to begin doing just that, and stop the pointless stereotyping and prejudice. Club RAIN was an amazing idea, the bringing together of different people for support and friendship
amongst each other. Let’s continue that plan in all of our school’s groups. Hopefully we can cause a chain reaction, and bring us closer together, not only in the individual clubs, but as an entire school.
HSNPA520
Most of us know Ms. Ireland, one of our old math teachers, retired at the end of last year. It also seems the club she advised, Club RAIN, did as well. As of last year, all the members of the club graduated, making it very hard to reboot the program into the minds of our student body’s extra-curricular hard drive. There was an attempt by a few of the teachers, but not enough or at all by the students, causing the program to crash and shut down. I get that a lot of it was because we didn’t have old members promoting the club anymore, but I do believe a factor in its failure this year is because most members happened to be homosexual or bisexual, giving it the reputation as the “gay club”. It really bothers me people turned away from it because it did support equality, which includes homosexuality. I understand there are legitimate reasons why some students can’t join clubs, like a busy schedule, but homophobia is most definitely
not one of them. The misconception about RAIN was that it stood for gays alone. RAIN stands for “Rise Against Intolerance Now”, meaning removing discrimination and supporting those of all races, genders, religions, orientations, and so on. If it was meant for just homosexuality, it would more likely be named something like SUG (Support Us Gays). There are plenty of other clubs and organizations in this school that have gay/lesbian members. I do happen to be a homosexual, as some of you know, and I am the president of the debate team. I also happen to know of a few other nonheterosexuals on the team, but our sexual orientations have nothing to do with the basis of the team. If my team had turned away from me because of my orientation it would be blatant ignorance. The goal of the team is to learn public speaking/ presentation skills. I am pretty sure that has nothing to do with the person that makes my heart swim. It was the same concept with RAIN. The goal was support for everyone. It

Wrestling kicks butt “We kicked butt!” exclaimed Mr. Lewis after Granger High’s first wrestling match. Granger wrestlers went to the match against East and Park City with the goal of taking care of business and winning all
their matches. All three divisions accomplished this. Nathen Cook (12) started wrestling at the age of five after seeing his older brother compete in Jr. High. Destin Mulder (10) also got into the sport because of a family member. It may seem that wrestling is something that runs in these wrestlers’ blood. This might come as news to you but wrestling is one of the hardest sports. Not only are the 6:00am-7:00am and 2:30pm to 5:30pm practices intense but competing is also crazy hard. With maneuvers such as the Banana Split, Candle Stick, and Guillotine you have to take the pain. This is exactly what wrestlers have done. After suffering from bruised ribs, dislocated shoulders, and popped knees they’re passion is still there. The wrestling coaches are also awesome. Mr. Hansen, the head coach, has 30 years of experience under his wing. Steve Hennefer which also to have coached Mr. Hansen is one of the assistant coaches. Nick Hamilton the other assistant coach has placed in nationals. With all these great and experienced coaches the wrestling team has a good chance of making it to state this year

Granger’s girls basketball team raises the bar
The girls basketball team has cone undefeated so far this season. Ryna Leota (12) states “It was fun last year but its way, way better this year. “ Bailey Wilson (12) said “It’s nice to have a winning season” The team has made great strides since previous seasons, in which undefeated seasons such as this one were unheard of. “As a team, we are all working hard instead of just individuals.” Said Bailey. Precious Taliulu (11), on this exciting bound in Girls basketball history, says that the reason why they have done so well is that they aren’t as lazy as last year. Kalolaina Samani says there is more conditioning. As for coaches? “He yells a lot. It’s kind of a good and bad thing” says Ryna. The team gets pushed harder by the coaches. Good job girls! The Lancers are very proud!
Albanians at Granger
There are many cultures found here at Granger High School. We have some small groups of different cultures, and some big. One of the smaller groups are the Albanian’s. There’s about four, here in G-house. Their names are Fexhrije and Mentor Aliji, and Vedat and Suad Ademi. Albania is located in
Volume LI, Issue 5
Europe across from Italy and next to Bosnia. Albania’s religion is mostly Islam. They are very religious people and love to express religion with pride. Albanian’s are very proud of what they are and how far they get in life. Europe has a high fashion lifestyle and as Europeans, we live that life. Today, women’s clothing is more about business; preppy, casual, and very tight. Women will not go out in public if they aren’t well dressed. Men’s fashion is preppy, but is very sexy. They do wear tight clothing and you just might think they’re gay, but they’re not.
Albania’s night life is all about cars, food, fun, parties, clubs, men, women and more. Cars in high quality and technology are very popular. Going out to night clubs with a large group of friends is popular as well. Sports are well played and are always popular in Albania. Two of the most played sports are soccer and basketball. A few teachers have been asked if they knew anything about the Albanian culture. Mr. Christiansen, the art teacher actually knows some words in Albanian and is willing to learn more. Mrs. Miller says, “I would love to take a vacation in Albania.” Another teacher said,
“Albania has a great beach and I would love to go there during the summer.” Mentor Aliji is Albanian and is proud. He loves the people and the culture. He speaks the language very well and is looking forward to learning English. He also mentioned how Albanian people are so helpful and nice when they arrived here in U.S.A Melisa Mustafic is Bosnian and is learning how to speak Albanian. It’s not an easy language she recalls, but she is looking forward to learning the language. She loves Albanian music, food, and people.

morals and beliefs. Freedom of speech allows you to say what you want without getting in trouble, but there are some limitations. You cannot exactly scream, “Fire!” in a crowded movie theater, so what harm is there in having respect for those around you? All students asked about this said there should be some form of censorship, but the extent continuously varied. Kylie Callahan (11) says you should censor yourself around little children. Kylie also says she believes in freedom of speech, “but kids today are just so corrupt.” Family is also a major group of people students say you should censor yourself around. Regan Barker (11) says she censors herself around family, especially her grandmother. When asked if she thinks it has to do with the household she grew up in, she clearly said, “Yeah, I really do.” Yes, censorship is a

Kevin Vega (10) thinks it is more about the morals. “I don’t think it’s obligated…it’s just their choice.” He continued to say, “(Censorship) is not that big of a deal. Just go with it.”
Censorship can be courteous, but it most definitely not required, especially in the minds of some students. Choose who you censor yourself around, and try to talk appropriately to them. This makes you more appropriate and people will begin to think more highly of you once you have shown them respect.

Band advertisement, it’s what all bands need. They need to get their word out, to sell out. From the internet to milk cartons it’s insane but are they just going too far? “I think it’s weird that some bands are starting to advertise on milk cartons. Most people don’t read the sides of milk cartons,” Camille Wadopps (11) states. “It makes them more popular if they advertise on milk cartons, they are thinking outside the box,” Josh Whitehead (11) said.
“I don’t really care what they do as long as they don’t hurt me or my environment,” Mike Pedro (11) said. But is it really a good idea? Or are they trying to hard? Josh stated, “I don’t think it’s a good idea because the concerts get too packed.” “I think it’s a great idea, it gets their word out, makes them popular,” Mike said. Ok, so people have different opinions on what ways are good or bad to advertise. So if you were in a band how would you advertise? “I would advertise on MTV and 94.9,” Josh said. Camille stated, “I would advertise on the internet, lots of people use it every day!”
Mike had a different idea, “I would do free shows and stuff for my advertisement.” So are you looking for new music? Or are you just trying to figure out who sings that song? If so you can find band advertisements everywhere, from the radio to the internet and billboards and milk cartons. Either way, hope your month is great lancers!
