THE EXPERIENCE The journay began in Madrid. Our studies focussed on strategies in architectural projects. Here we got the resources for an international work environment. At the beggining we had short workshops about specific themes that helped us expand our vission of architecture and understanding of place and culture in a project with Madrid as our laboratory. Important theoric lectures helped us relate the way architecture has impacted society and nature through history. As we moved ahead we had very useful lectures from professinals consultants, experts in specific fields of architecture and with a global experience. We combined this lectures with software skill clases and communication classes. The proffesional interaction we had in the office visits was a key point to learn how offices have overcomed difficult times.

[MA 02] URBAN PROSTETHICS Urban prostethics is a project planned as a complement to the existing HYPERTUBE project of PKMN Architects in the area of Tetuan. As to continue the concept of working with industrial elements we decided to work with industrial yellow gas pipes. The different dimenssions and placement of these elements generates many diverse activities, and generate spaces of different characteristics.

[MA 03] SHARED MADRID This Workshop was focus on the edge between public and private space in buildings. A deep research, based on observation, has give us an idea of shared spaces happening in the city of Madrid among these spaces. We have called this space the thickness of the facade in a building. The workshop aimed to introduce inovations, based on our research, to new projects. The amount and richness of the activities happening at the area between public and private is what makes a THICK FACADE .

MATTER AND DEFORMATION.

01.06 - Degradation

The architectural proposal here is to create a 6000m long wall along the Sahara dessert aiming to stop desertification. The strategy is to use the more abundant element in the desert; sand, and a particual bacteria named bacillus pasteurii to create a a solid material. Magnus Larsson explains better in these words “‘structure is made straight from the dunescape by flushing a particular bacteria through the loose sand…which causes a biological reaction whereby the sand turns into sandstone; the initial reactions are finished within 24 hours, though it would take about a week to saturate the sand enough to make the structure habitable.”1 What we can see here in terms of matter is the degradation of material through a bacterial process. This process can better be explained better with scientific language and in a microscope scale. Eventhough the spaces might be intentional, the final aspect of the project will maintain the irregular shapes, mini paths and textures that can only be achieved by a natural process.

01.04 - Appropiation

This project built in 2012 is a Radiotherapy Center in the town of Hof, Germany. The façade is done using a curtain walling made of copper. Copper has the property of changing with time. As the architects describe “the changing seasons are reflected in the subtle color changes in the metal, from luminous bright copper to a warm red-brown, from shiny to matt.” One property of reflective materials is the ability of visually connecting the surroundings. As there are many levels of reflection we some how can filter what we want to be reflected by the material we choose. In this case, the reflection of the surroundings is important but blurry due to copper properties. The reflection that is pursued is the tone reflection. As seasons change, the distance of the sun also changes and the tone of the sky also does. The copper reflective façade will change its tone during each seasons such as natures does. Seen in another way, the material has also the property of showing the age of the building. If we could know the time in takes to copper to go from shiny, to matt and ending rusty we could easily recognize how old is the building. It is a property that doesn’t happen so fast in other materials so while the rest of the building remains more or less with the same appearance, the cooper will age with time. Just to be considered that as the copper lost its reflective characteristics it losses the prior ability to reflect seasons.

MATTER AND CONFORMATION.

02.03 - Assembly

What the picture is showing is a wall made of an particura lshaped bottle named The Heineken Wobo meaning World Bottle. The result came up from the idea of Alfred Heineken to build homes for the poor in Curacao from bottles. Because of the new requierements, the bottle suffer many changes and experiments in order to achieve a bottle with enough resistance and at the same time easly to assembly. This last factor was determining in its final shape. The bottles were meant to lay horizontally, interlock and layout in the same manner as ‘brick and mortar’ construction. It is instrumental information around the better way of assembly it and to resist.

02.01 - Manipulation The Oxaca School of plastic arts is located in a desert region in Mexico. The main goal was to reuse the same soil that was extracted in the site to construct the project. As a result of choosing Rammed earth construction system had singular appearance results due to the ways it is built. Rammed earth is a traditional construction technique that uses raw materials as earth gravel and clay that are tamped by layers until they get the required height. Modern techniques of rammed earth add other materials to stabilize the mix and better formwork solutions but the logic is still the same. The really width retention walls is a characteristic of the system. As we can see in the picture, that is one of the issues that calls the attention more. As a benefit of working with such wall width acoustic and thermal problems are solved so even though modern mixes can decrease its width, those other qualities could be loss. In order to have a correct and compact result, the tampering has to be done in 20 cm horizontal layers. Because it is a raw materials process and it is mostly done manually, these layers often are irregular giving a unique appearance to its walls. The layers are emphasized because the different tones each one has. The different tones are the result of different mixtures for each layer, for example, more cement in some layers to add resistance to horizontal stress lead to more grey layers. The formwork is also a characteristic of the construction method. The holes in the wall used to hold the framework are visible after the process is finished. Some of them because they were used as a step to tamp the earth inside the formwork.

MATTER AND CONTENT.

03.04 - Contextualization

At first glance, the brand new Ningbo Historic Museum looks like it has been there for centuriess or an impression of abandoned. This effect is caused because of matter. Along the materials used for the facade, there is a lot of them which are recycled brick and typical construction elements from the area. In this way, the material used in the building is encoded information of the place. It contains information about the materials they use, the color and its shapes. The effect on people is to reconize it as a part of their own. Fragments of the facade may remember something about a particualr house or situation. But what also happens is a denial of its instrumental information. Materials are not used as they where meant to. This happens because in this case, matter intentions are more about content than about conformation

03.05 - IDENTIFICATION

These pavement stone made of bronze are used to commemorate people which were victims of Nazi Holocaust. The material make it to be easily identify while walking. The repetition effect one a person knows the meaning of this pavement stone increases the effect. The information included in the stones contains name, date of birth and place where they were taken and place and date of death of victims. In this way, the pavement stones are enconded information with the purpose of identify.

THE EXPERIENCE China was a whole new world, a new culture, language, work flow and handles different project scales. We learned how to put in practice all what we have learned before but also learn new skills. Precision and detail was not a priority, instead versatility and workgroup were the key to take a project forward. We learned to work with references, be flexibles for changes and communicate in spite of language limitations. China showed us to work in a completely new scale with different approach and unexpected results.

AMAZONAS REGION JUN 2 - JUN 16 PANGAEA ARCHITECTS

The idea is simple. While creating a permanent observatory in the Amazonia would increase tourism and so damage the Amazonia, our idea is to establish a permanent school within the Amazonia for locals and experts from where the analysis and control of the biosphere would be accurate and precise. At the same time there will be a "Traveling Pavilion" that could easily be dissembled and placed on a different city every few weeks bringing the Amazonia closer to everyone, accesible, reachable and with accurate information that will allow to understand how important it is to preserve it.

TO CONSIDER IS ALSO THE PRESCENCE OF CANYONS,WHICH HAVE ALSO BEEN IMPORTANT IN THE WAY THE CITY EXPAND NORTH FROM THE BAY.

DIFRAGMENTATION OF THE CITY AND THE TWO SAN DIEGO FEELINGS

MISSION BAY

THE PRESCENCE OF THE I-5 HIGHWAY, NAVY FACILITIES AND THE AIRPORT HAVE CREATED A VOID IN SAN DIEGO THAT DOESN’T ALLOW A FLUID CONECTION BETWEEN THE WHOLE CITY. AS CONSEQUENCE THERE IS A MORE URBAN FEELING OF SAN DIEGO AT A DOWN TOWN AND A BEACH ORIENTED FEELING OF SAN DIEGO AT MISSION BAY WHICH ARE NOT CONECTED. DOWN TOWN

67

THE GREEN NECKLACE THE CENTER OF OUR RESEARCH FOCUS ON THIS AREA BETWEEN DOWN TOWN AND MISSION BAY . THE IDEA OF CONECTING THE TWO CITY FEELINGS WITH A GREEN NECKLACE WHICH ENHANCE PEDESTRIAN ACTIVITY HAS BEEN THE CENTER OF DISCUSSION OF MANY SAN DIEGO AUTHORITIES . OUR GOAL IS TO CREATE STRATEGIES TO REVITALISE THIS ZONE WHILE ALLOWING CONECTION BETWEEN THESE TWO ZONES.

1.-VETERANS VILLAGES The Vetarns Villages is a whole block of residential facilities at the shore of Pacific Highway, This project happen as a consecuence of the whole redevolpment that is going on in Liberty Station area in land which belonged to the Navy. The block is made of many residential units that icludes a plaza inside. This kind of ressidential use is compatible to a new area redevelopment and helps joining Midway with Old Town.

2.-NEW APARTMENTS This is a Condo located between Hancock street and the trolley lane on California Street. Is a three story ressidential building with open green area in the inside. This kind of building represents the spirit of a new affordable housing units in a densificated area and easly accesible by public transportation.

3.-MISSION BREWERY PLAZA Constructed in 1913 and was the original base of operations of Mission Brewery. The facility was converted for multiple non-brewery uses for almost 90 years until in 2010 went back to get utilized by brewers without their own brewhouses. The building is an importan landmark of San Diego because of all the history it has behind but also due to its good conservation and legacy as a building. This building could easly be attached to a new redevelopment of the area with a more that only industrial use.

4.-PORT OF SAN DIEGO

5.-SOLAR TURBINES

This building was built in the Cold War period and with militar purposes, that is why is a blind building with windows starting only from 4th floor. Is the only tall building in the area and is used as the Headquarter of the Port Authority.

6.- NAVY WAREHOUSES

7.-SPAWARS

This Warehouse belongs to the Navy and it mixes a Pv Array with storage units. This peace of land is trapped bewteen the Navy redevelopment on Liberty Station and the Pacific Highway. As redevelpment exends, it will push away this buildings.

Solar Turbines Incorporated is a subsidiary of Caterpillar and is are manufacturers of industrial gas turbines. This big industry facility is compoud of many buildings and really blind to the outside. Its location is strategic point between the Bay and the airport.

Spawars, located in this building since 1997 provide much of the tactical information and technology required by the Navy to complete its operational missions.

1.-PRIVATE TRANSPORTATION The Pacific Corridor has some issues conecting with the rest of the city . In a longitudinal terms, The I-5 Highway, and the Pacific Highway conect the East part of the corridor with the West part of the Corridor in a very effective, express car oriented way. In Tranversal terms, many streets conect the I-5 with the Pacific Highway but only few of them ( Washington, Noel, Vine , Sassafras, Palm and Laurel ) cross the I5 Highway, making possible to conect the rest of the city with the Pacific corridor. INNER STREETS CONECTING STREETS

1.-PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION Between Pacific Highway and I-5 Highway runs California Street which carry the Trolley Lane. Along the Pacific Corridor there are 3 Trolley stops: Middle Town, Washington and Old Town. The Trolley works really good connecting people from East to West and with walkable distances to the stations. But there is only Bus stops over Washington street and Laurel Street what makes really hard to conect the Pacific Corridor from the rest of the city if is not at these two points. Also, inside the Pacific corridor , the Bus stops are too far one from each other, creating spots that totally desconcected from public transportation. PEDESTRIAN TRANSPORTATION

LAUREL STREET

Since the Pacific Corridor is now mostly used as a express way for cars to get from Down Town to Midway, the pedestrian is the most affected by this situation. To cross in a Transversal way along the corridor happens in the best case through a pedestrian bridge and in the worst and more common case under a tunnel by the side of cars. Also as the streets are thought to be fast for cars, to walk parallel to Pacific Highway does not feel safe for pedestrians. As a consequence of all these, the Pacific Corridor now is not pedestrian friendly and makes difficult to get to public transportation stations.

THE STRATEGY FOR ACHIEVING THE CONECTION BAY TO BAY AND TO THE REST OF THE CITY IS TO TURN PACIFIC HIGHWAY INTO A BOULEVARD. WHICH LANES WILL BE BALLANCE ACCORDING TO ITS REAL DEMAND. GIVEN THAT I-5 IS THE MAIN HIGHWAY RUNNING SAN DIEGO AND GOES PARALLEL TO PACIFIC WE CAN THINK IN PACIFIC AS A MORE PEDESTRIAN ORIENTED STREET. ALONG THE BOULEVARD WE WILL CREATE A SERIE OF ELEMENTS THAT WILL ALLOW THE IDEA OF THE BOULEVARD TO WORK BY CHANGING THE CONDITION OF THE HOLE AREA.

SUPER CANYON

UP TO THE BRIDGE, DOWN TO THE TOWN BRIDGE The first part of the Super Canyon is turning the Pacific/ I-5 Bridge into a pedestrian oriented bridge. The idea is the reuse of infraestructure with a human scope replacing the car oriented city into a pedestrian friendly city.

75

PLAZA The plaza acts like a joint of the two elevated elements of the super canyon that is why is considered as an expantion of the bridge. It is a more static place than the other two.

Maple Canyon IT IS CONFORMED OF THREE ELEMENTS, THE BRIDGE THAT CONECTS PACIFIC HIGHWAY WITH I5 HIGWAY, A PLAZA ON LAUREL STREET AND A WALK WAY OVER MAPPLE CANYON.

ONE OF THE CHARACTERISTICS IS THAT THE SUPER CANYON IS NOT THOUGHT TO BE A DESTINATION POINT BUT A CONTINIOUS EXPERIENCE THAT CAN BE BOARDED AT ANY POINT. AS THE GREEN LINE GOES FOWARD IT ACTIVATES THE PLACES BY ALLOWING DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES.

77

Below the bridge new activities begin to happen. As an improved area this open space offers a variety of temporary activities as food tracks, fairs, trade markets, etc... Compression and dilatation is a must in a linear park. As some sections are thought to take you from one place to other, others offer the possibility to stay and rest, go back to ground level or just enjoy shading.

Under but also above the bridge, native or adapted vegetation is planted to offer the visitors a cleaner and fragant air and the opportunity to know local plant life.

While one lane is thought to be a more slow movement, gazing experience, the other lane is focus as a sport lane ideal for bikers or joggers which like to excersice with a wonderful city view.

The spectacular view that this place has offers an interesting open space to gather people around. have concerts, lunch with friends sun tunning or just rest before keep going

The green corridor offers the posibility of stop at any time and sit in a bench to rest, read the newspaper or have some food.

Shade is a need when walking for a while in San Diego. The plaza offers a reward to our pedestrians. While called plaza, it is really a point where the two bridges get wider, collect people, allow activities and then spread again into the city, The influence of the plaza extends to it sourroundings. New comercial use associate with the plaza can happen here. Restaurants, bars , bike rentals shops are only some of the uses that can start to happen here. The existing point where of the city meets with the Canyon is not really making a conection. The idea is to create a space that joints the natural trail with the urban sidewalks

This natural trail is surrounded by plants and animals endemic of canyons. At different points, the bridge gets wide to observe the natural treats of the area.

Conection with existing elements is importan, transversal bridges are points where people can go down canyon and join the walk way.

THE BRIDGE FROM CARS TO PEOPLE THE BRIDGE IS THE STARTING POINT OF THE SUPER CANYON. THE MAIN IDEA OF THE PROJECT IS TO USE URBAN INFREASTRUCTURE BUILT FOR CARS AND ADAPT IT TO PEOPLE . THE BRIDGE THAT CONECTS I-5 HIGHWAY WITH PACIFIC HIGHWAY WILL BE TURN INTO LINEAR PARK. THIS GREEN CORRIDOR WILL ALLOW PEDESTRIAN CONECTIVITY FROM THE PACIFIC CORRIDOR TO THE REST OF THE CITY NORTH OF THE I-5. ALONG THIS CORRIDOR MANY ACTIVITIES WILL HAPPEN, AND WILL BE ACCESIBLE AT DIFFERENT POINTS OF THE CITY . EVERYTHING SURROUNDED IN A NATURAL ENVIRONMENT THAT RECREATE THE IDEA THAT THE CANYON SPREAD ALL OVER THE CITY.

MAIN STRUCTURE The main structure is made of metallic posts around the radio of the opening of the slab. The strategy is to have a divided structure that looks light so nature could highlight through it.

SLABS PERFORATIONS When the Vertical Garden happens, the slab is perforated to allow the integration with the Bridge. In this poitn the two sides of the Bridge merge to create a meeting point.

VERTICAL CIRCULATION A Charcoal stair is fixed to the circular structure. This allows people fom both levels to comunicate. Also , due to its perimetral condition, the Vertical garden keeps clean in the core.

VINE VEGETATION In the core of the Vertical Garden, vain vegetation is planted. This vegetation will go up with the Charcoal star .

THE PLAZA THE JUNCTION POINT THE PLAZA ACTS LIKE A JOINT POINT OF THE TWO ELEVATED ELEMENTS OF THE SUPER CANYONSTHE PLAZA TAKES PLACE IN TWO LEVELS , ONE LOWER COMING FROM THE WALK WAY AND ONE ELEVATED COMING FROM THE BRIDGE AND IT ARTICULATES THEM. THE PLAZA OFFERS TO THE USERS AN OPORTUNITIY OF SHADE OR PROTECTION AGAINST RAIN. IT IS ALSO A COVERED PLATFORM TO OBSERVE THE CITY OVER THE BARRIER THAT I-5 HIGWAY REPRESENTS. THE PLAZA PLAYS WITH THE TOPOGRAPHY TO ARTICULATE THE PROJECT AND CREATE A FLUID CIRCULATION.

3

81

The I-5 Highway has become a barrier to enjoy the wonderfull view of San Diego Bay front. The adjoing streets are the less fortunate. By lifting the plaza we get to conserve the view and see over the highway.

NIGHT MARKET

The same strategy of vertical garden used in the Bridge are apllied here. In this case besides the vertical garden and vertical comunication, this structure is the main structural core, a solar chimenee and where the rainwater is collected.

VIEW POINT

A big green explanade of native or adapted vegation is placed in the surroundings of the building. This gives a nature envirment to gather people and ideal to kids to play.

VERTICAL GARDEN

NATURE

AN INTERIOR GARDEN ALLOW CROSS VENTILLATION USING A SOLAR CHIMENEE STRATEGY. THE SLOPE IN THE ROOF ALLOW RAIN WATER CAPTURE FOR THE GARDEN. THE SECOND FLOOR USE A PERFORATED MATERIAL TO ALLOW LIGHT TO GO TRHOUGH.

The covered area under the Plaza seems like a nice space for interchange of activities . Safe from rain or sun and easly accesible from any place there is a lot of activities that could happen to give life to the place everytime at any hour.

PERFORATED STEEL SURFACE SOLAR CHEMINEE A solr chimenee in the top of the vertical garden allows the extraction of hot air from the inside of the Plaza to the outside

This porous material allows the Plaza in the second story to breathe and light get into the the floor plant.

EASY ACCESIBILTY

HARVESTING RAINWATER Surrounding the metallic posts, rings of trays are placed. Over them, pots that contain hanging plants lay. The idea is that the plants start to colonize from top to bottom the vertical garden.

Even though the topography is conflictive, the exterior space is designed to guide you friendly to the entrance.

TOPOGRAPHY INTEGRATION Going with the topography, a green esplanade spreads in the south limit of the plot. This little green area gives the oportunity to enjoy nature environmen

THE PLAZA WALKING THROUGH THE CANYON

MAPLE STREET

THE WALK WAY IS AN ELEVATED CORRIDOR OVER MAPLE CANYON . IT CONSERVES THE EXISTING TRAIL ROUTE TO REDUCE THE IMPACT OF OPENING NEW ROUTES IN THIS ECOSYSTEM BUT IT LIFTS FROM THE GROUND TO BE PROTECTEDFROM FLOODS. AS IT GOES FOWARD IT GOES WIDER IN SOME SPOTS TO ALLOW PEOPLE TO STOP AND ENJOY THE NATURE AROUND. IT ALSO ATTEMP TO CONECT WITH THE CITY AT DIFFERENT POINT SUCH AS FIRST AV. BRIDGE, QUINCE STREET BRIDGE AND MAPPLE STREET AT THE END OF THE CANYON.

83

LOW IMPACT IN THE ECOSYSTEM ENHANCE NATURE CONECTION WITH URBAN ENVIRONMENT

QUINCE STREET BRIDGE

FIRST AVENUE BRIDGE

STRATEGIES

WALK WAY STARTING POINT The actual point where Maple Canyon meets the urban part ofn Sa Diego is in bad conditions, fenced and its acces controlled. The Idea of my proposal is to celebrate the place that the nature and the builted envirornment meet with an open space. A transition between two worlds, a city porche.

SD_03 SUPER CANYON

84

THE PLAZA PERFORATED STEEL ENCLOSURE The idea behind this material is to allow the bridge to breath and not trap rain water runoff. Also the porocity of this material allow nature

OLD PEDESTRIAN TRAIL The Walk Way follows the existing trail. This strategy tries to avoid opening new virgin areas of the canyon. Also the existing path somehow give us a clue of what is the better way to move through the canyon and what are the better spots to observe. Elevating the walk way also helps avoid sedimentation in the bottom of the canyon.

85

LIGHT STEEL STRUCTURE The main structure is made of steel trusses which allow big spams without being monolithic. This strategy also enhances the idea of allowing nature to colonize the bridge. Working with bolted metalic elements allows the replacement or expantion of the bridge if necessary.
