Now Trending MONTHLY: MAY 2021

Sustained demand for consumer packaged goods (CPG) has manufacturers working hard to catch up, and many are leaning on third party support to meet supply. As a result, companies are re-examining inventory targets as well as their proximity to retailers. This evolution of logistics and the retail experience comes at a crucial time: consumers are seeking easy ways to shop for changing needs, and personalized online grocery shopping is growing in popularity. It will be in the best interest of brick-and-mortar retailers to recreate their own version of this seamless shopping experience in store.

With its latest product, Ritual expands into dietary supplements with a plant-based protein powder sold in resealable pouches. Kate Hudson launches another nutritional powder brand, InBloom. These dietary supplements cater to popular wellness goals like energy, mental clarity, skincare, and clean protein. The powder is sold in reusable glass or aluminum jars, and refills are supplied in an environmentally-friendly pouch that degrades naturally on its own over time, without water, heat, sunlight, or oxygen. Unilever is launching a new laundry detergent made from recycled carbon emissions instead of petroleum. The dissolvable laundry pods will be debuted under the OMO brand in China in rigid tubs and flexible pouches. CLR Products, a cleaning staple for tough grime, is launching two new product lines that respond to consumers’ need for everyday effectively cleaning solutions. FOOD & BEVERAGE

Consumer consumption of plant-based foods has not slowed. Target has now added an entire line of plant-based products under its in-house (and largest owned) brand, Good & Gather. Products include everything from beverages, condiments to frozen foods. According to research from Acosta, 59% of consumers eat frozen foods for dinner often, or nearly all the time. Consumers value taste and quality over convenience in these products. Tapping into the trend for functional beverages, Pepsi Co. has launched Soulboost. SUSTAINABILITY

Dutch biochemical company Avantium, has been recognized for their paper bottle developments with both Coca-Cola and Absolut. Its PEF material, a 100% plant-based, fullyrecyclable bio-polyester, is on track for commercial production by the end of 2023 with bottles anticipated on-shelf by 2024. PEF stands to be a game changer for the food and beverage category, as a sustainable option to replace anything from plastic to glass to aluminum packages.

According to IWSA research, the rapid growth of the Readyto-Drink (RTD) alcohol beverage category can be attributed to consumers’ increased desire for convenience. What’s more, is that beverages that promote low-and-no alcohol content is becoming an “aspirational” way to achieve wellness goals. While lingering financial challenges from the pandemic have affected the trend of premiumization in this category, it is expected to continue. Albeit, the affects will be subtle and targeted to specific products. In the US, agave-based spirits are poised for the most growth.
