TRIDENT UNITED WAY BOLD COMMUNITY CHANGE

Trident United Way

“At BASF we don’t make the carpet. We make the carpet better.” -Advertising campaign for chemical company

T

here are many truly amazing human service

organizations in the Lowcountry that transform people’s lives and brighten our community every day. Trident United Way is not one of them. Trident United Way is the Intel chip “Inside” that connects providers, fosters collaborations, coordinates services, funds innovations and generally streamlines the delivery of services for a more efficient and effective system.

Don Kassing Aspire2 Consulting Trident United Way Board Chair

It’s not very sexy. But it’s exceedingly important. It benefits donors, providers and clients alike. It’s good for all of us.

By inter-connecting its work in education, financial stability and health, and by bringing together hundreds of providers, Trident United Way is simultaneously addressing the key issues affecting people in our community. Because of our local United Way, education services to children from low-income homes are coordinated with health and anti-poverty programs in some schools. Because of our local United Way, basic needs providers are sharing information, eliminating duplication and helping more people in more ways than ever. So you might say that Trident United Way doesn’t provide services for people in need. It makes services for people in need better.

EDUCATION 10-Year Goal 88% of students enrolled in 8th grade will graduate high school on time prepared for higher education and/or employment

Links An in-school, academic and life success initiative that addresses education, financial stability and health needs of students and their families.

87% of participating students improved their reading test scores

83% improved their math test scores 91% improved their behavior

“Links to Success is the kind of innovative program that we rely on Trident United Way to develop and execute for our children in most need. I’m convinced that Links is a critical part of the formula to reach our community goal of 88% graduation.” Anita Zucker CEO, The InterTech Group, Inc.

LIVE UNITED

FINANCIAL STABILITY 10-Year Goal 30% of tri-county residents living at or below 200% of poverty will move into financial stability

The Financial Stability Project

is a framework of services designed to help families move from poverty through the steps to self-sufficiency. Three initiatives within this framework brought $8 million to people in need in the Lowcountry just last year. The Benefit Bank of South Carolina: helping families in need apply at one time for all the federal benefits for which they qualify, like SNAP (food stamps) and Medicaid. CharityTracker: an online tool that has streamlined provision of basic needs services by Lowcountry charities and churches. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance: helping low- and moderateincome families avoid unscrupulous tax preparers and claim the Earned Income Tax Credit and other credits that they may have been missing.

“As a father of two young girls, I am keenly aware of the importance of a family’s financial stability. Through my volunteer work with Trident United Way, I have learned that transitioning from poverty to self-sufficiency does not occur in one giant leap, but through a series of steps accompanied by new skills. It takes a comprehensive approach, like the one TUW and its partners have embarked on, to help more families achieve self-sufficiency.” Bob Fei President, Lifecycle Engineering

LIVE UNITED

HEALTH 10-Year Goal 25% more tri-county residents will adopt a healthy lifestyle and reduce preventable conditions

EatSmart Move More Charleston Tri-county “Making the healthy choice the easy choice” Trident United Way and a broad coalition of organizations are working to educate people about healthy choices and advocate for an environment that promotes good health. Among the initiatives: encouraging workplaces, churches and schools to provide healthy options at meetings and meals.

“Rampant obesity, diabetes, stroke and heart disease aren’t just harmful to the people suffering with them. They are also a drain on our community’s resources and a constraint on economic development. Reducing the rates of chronic illness would be good for all of us.” Matt Severance CEO, Roper Hospital

Community Investments

In order to continue the work of achieving the community’s goals to increase high school graduation, reduce poverty and improve people’s health in the Lowcountry, Trident United Way works with dozens of funded partners on programs measurably changing lives in these areas. On the next few pages are the programs that formed the backbone of TUW’s work in 2011 in education, financial stability and health. These strategic funding decisions were made by hundreds of community volunteers in a painstaking and disciplined process over months of work. Community Impact volunteers are crucial to the success of Trident United Way’s work.
