The untold journey of a design student struggling to succeed in a masked up semester

By: Trina Hanold, Art 130- Fall 2020, St. Norbert College

And so the journey begins...

Design School The year began with learning how to adhere ones way of life into a piece of artwork. By engaging with a real person it changed the direction of my prototype through getting to understand what they say as feedback, but also using their expressions to understand how they are feeling and using the emotions they displayed in the prototype.Showing my unfinished work to someone was honestly a little scary. I would call myself a perfectionist and want to get feedback that is only good, and this project took me out of my comfort zone a bit. The pace of the project for myself changed through what we were doing. At first it felt slow when asking all the questions, but once we started to draw and actively think of ideas the time flew. Normally I work towards the more slow end, mainly because I prefer to have a fully processed idea before I even begin a project. From what I learned I would go back and try to think more actively, like when asking the questions I wish I would have dug a little deeper and focus on less topics to really understand the ones I did pursue.

Dot-Line

Next on the journey we proceed to use dots and lines for meaning. I think this project was a little difficult for myself to make a well crafted object due to the fact that I’m somewhat inpatient in wanting to see the final product. I think it is worth the extra time to craft something that is well done, rather than wasting time in creating something poorly and having to redo it. This project really affected my idea of abstraction, I never would have that looking at a line and a dot could mean something. It showed the power and importance that simplicity in a well made composition can send meaning to the viewer. At first I found it difficult to represent ideas without illustrating them since we live in a world of symbols and meaning. After working hands on with the material it became evident of the different ways you can represent the words without associating them to illustrations.

The above picture shows the different thumbnails for the dot-line ideas. Left 3 pictures are the final iterations of the words rejection, joy and stability.

Letterforms As we continue we find out what is like to create and carve out your letters, and how to properly place them to achieve meaning. By working with letterforms this way it made me learn that small adjustments can make a huge difference. Whether it was the shade of the letters or their alignment on the paper I gained the understanding and awareness of how words can be displayed in different and unique ways.I think if I were to continue working with these letters I would be more diligent and aware on how the carving of them is done. I think the chatter of the letters is cool and would like to see the chatter add to the word more specifically in the way it’s carved.

Object Iterations This next project showed me the importance of using multiple media in creating multiple iterations, along with understanding the content you are working with. The most challenging media was the magazine collage due to how hard it was to find enough of one pattern and how to piece them together to create a monarch butterfly. My favorite media was using paper and cutting it out in detail, I loved the contrast of the black and white paper. I learned on photoshop the importance of masking an object and how to keep it detailed during the process.

PSA Posters One aspect of this project that gave me a new persepctive was creating the work for someone elses thoughts and criteria. It made it harder since I had to come up with a vision that would most likely be different than what the partner asked. Being limited to type was challenging in the way that it was something I’ve never had to solely rely on. I found myself taking more time into looking at what fonts to use and how to set up the poster to portray the message and catch the eye of the viewer. For the layout of the poster I used a bolder and bigger font to promote the header, and set up the page in a more traditional newspaper like rhythm feel to it.

Presentations What drew me to Susan Kare as my desinger was her importance to creating the foundational Apple Company Mac Computer sybmols. Another component about Kare that I found interesting was how her work in graphic design was always changing with the new technology.

Presenting to classmates is something that has always been scary, but in the end I know that if I prepare well and know what I’m going to thorgoly say it usually ends up not being too bad. Since I had to opt for the virtual presentation I found it to be more uncomfortable at the fact of thinking about other people watching the video rather than just presenting in person.

Vocation Questions Question 2: If you were guaranteed it would support you financially, what would you want to design or make for a living? I could only dream of this ever happening, but I would want to design Disney Attractions for a living. Growing up I had been able to visit Disney World a few times and basically became obsessed with all things Disney Parks. I think getting the chance to create a unique and immersive experience while working for Disney Imagineering would be life changing, not just for myself but hopefully all of the people who would get to experience those attractions.

Question 2: What is something you’ve made in the last two years that you are proud of? Now I feel like most people would answer this question in the context of physical objects that they have actually made, and if that’s what you’re here to read about I’m sorry but you won’t find it. So what is it I’ve made in the last two years? Life in High School for myself was full of toxic friendships and little happiness, those who I thought loved me were the ones who tore me down the most for being myself. Coming to College I wasn’t sure of who I was as a person but knew I didn’t want to make the same mistakes and have the same friendships as High School. It was a scary but fresh start. When I started to meet people I didn’t cover up my true self and quickly realized that others actually wanted to be friends with that weird person I used to hide. After a year I can thankfully say that I have met some of the closest friends I will ever have, but more importantly they are the only ones so far who have accepted who I actually am. Moral of the story is that I’ve made great friends, but more importantly made great improvements in my quality of life. I’m proud of who I’ve confidently become and am beyond excited to see what the future holds.

The end.
