The Community School of New Hope-Solebury offers continuing education through creative, physical, and intellectual opportunities. Now in our 38th year, we are continuing in an exciting new phase of improved content and service to students. Spring semester classes begin on Mar. 9 and run through June. Courses are held at New HopeSolebury High School, 182 W. Bridge St., New Hope, unless otherwise noted. There are no classes if the high school is closed.

COMPUTER BASICS–MICROSOFT WORD AND MORE Keyboarding, using a mouse, copying and deleting files, the Internet, e-mail, the basics of the Microsoft Windows program, including Microsoft Word to create letters, brochures, books and more. Laptops will be available, but you are welcome to bring your own laptop and software, if available, to become more familiar with your system. MICROSOFT EXCEL FOR BEGINNERS Learn the basics of this popular Microsoft Office Suite software; it’s for people who want to better organize, store and analyze both numerical and text information. Learn how to manage data, perform calculations and present professional looking results; applications include home and business. Whether you are new to spreadsheets, or currently use 2003, 2007, 2010 or 2013 Excel versions, you’ll learn how to create workbooks that incorporate formulas, functions, and charts; how

to set up tables and databases, and then efficiently manage, sort, and filter data to give you the information and results you want. MICROSOFT POWERPOINT FOR BEGINNERS & BEYOND In this hands-on course, learn to prepare professional looking and persuasive multipage slide presentations including photos, graphics, charts, external and internal hyperlinks, and more. You will gain insight to the “rules” regarding the best slide content, format, and style for the intended audience as well as insight about how to develop and use a confident and effective oral presentation style. Class includes the option for student oral presentation practice. Slide templates, animation and transition, video and sound will be included in presentations for maximum impact to help retain your audience’s attention, but with care to not going over the top. Publishing the presentation as a useful audience handout and in other forms will be addressed. PowerPoint is the overwhelming leader as the software choice for virtually all businesses, educational, and other organizations. More and more businesses expect employees to at least be acquainted with PowerPoint. PowerPoint is typically included in the Microsoft Office suite. QUICKBOOKS FOR BEGINNERS USING ONLINE-THE NEXT GENERATION SYSTEM Get ready for tax season and learn the basics of QuickBooks Online–the Next Generation, a Cloudbased system that lets you manage your finances from any device, anywhere. This hands-on course covers tracking income and expenses for quarterly or year-end taxes, sending invoices, and reconciling transactions. This bank-level security system allows you to take photos of receipts and use a mobile app to download transactions automatically, receive payments directly from customers and automatically deposit these to your bank account, and to run reports automatically. Students must have basic computer knowledge–we’ll cover accounting terms. FACEBOOK–HOW TO RUN A VIRTUAL YARD SALE Selling items on Facebook is quick, easy, safe, helping you de-clutter without holding a garage sale. In this demonstration class, we’ll cover how to set up a Facebook account if you don’t already have one, ways to list and price your items, and how to safely arrange a sale at an offsite location for your protection. GREEK COOKING Greek cooking showcases the Mediterranean diet that uses fresh, healthy ingredients. We’ll make a Spanakopita, a savory pastry filled with spinach and feta cheese, Fasolakia –Greek-style green beans, and Moussaka, an eggplant, potato, and zucchini dish, and other favorites. This Greek experience will end with a sit-down tasting and a dash of culture from instructor who was raised in a Greek family–Oopa. Please bring a container for your creations. JAPANESE SHABU SHABU Shabu shabu is one of Japan’s most popular hot pot dishes, featuring raw vegetables, tofu, and thin slices of beef cooked in broth. It’s a fun meal, since everyone sits around the hot pot and cooks together–a great way to get the kids to eat their veggies. Hands-on class ends with a sit-down tasting and plenty of Japanese culture. KOREAN COOKING Korean cooking is quick and easy to make, plus it features wholesome ingredients that the entire family will love. We’ll experiment with ways to serve kimchi, one of the healthiest foods around; from pancakes, kimchee fried rice, dumplings, and other great dishes. We’ll also make Bibimbap, a deep bowl dish featuring “crackly” rice, vegetables, and meats or seafood. Class concludes with a tasting and dash of Korean culture. MEXICAN COOKING Learn to make popular Mexican casual dishes, known as “street food” such as hand-pressed tortillas made from specialty flours, homemade zesty enchiladas, tacos, appetizers, tamales, authentic salsa, and Mexican Wedding Cookies. We’ll experiment with meat, black bean, or vegan fillings. Taught by a native of Mexico and graduate of Philadelphia’s Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College, we’ll use fresh, authentic ingredients to bring out the true flavors of Mexico. PERSIAN COOKING Persian cuisine combines different types of rice and stews made with an array of vegetables, fruits, meats, spices, nuts, and herbs. We’ll use Persian flavorings such as saffron, dried limes, cinnamon, and parsley, fresh green herbs, along with fruits such as plums, pomegranates, quince, prunes, apricots, dates, raisins, and cherries. FONDANT CAKE DECORATING Fondant cake decorating is fun, simple, and sure to impress. We’ll work with commercial fondant, rolling to be thin and tasty, and learn techniques with fondants and molds that you can purchase. Create flowers, bows, and cupcake toppers. Please wear a white shirt and apron, bring a rolling pin and an airtight container to take home your supply of fondant. FOOD PRESERVING: CANNING, FREEZING, DEHYDRATING, PICKLING, PRESSURE CANNING Learn the lost art of home preserving and enjoy locally grown food all year long. If you have a plastic bag–you can freeze; if you have an oven–you can dehydrate, and if you have a stainless pot, a pressure canner, and mason jars–you can make food to store for great last-minute meals. Join Certified Preserver Marian Bolum to overcome any fears. Class covers safety, correct techniques for preserving, instructions, recipes of foods you can make, and a tasting sample. SAUCE MAKING–THE FIVE MOTHER SAUCES Learn to make the five basic “Mother Sauces,” the starting points for all other sauces. Hands-on session to make Hollandaise sauce, Beschamel White sauce, Espagnole (Brown) Sauce, Tomato Classic Sauce, and Veloute’ (Velvet) Sauce. Learn the properties of stocks, how to make them the old-fashioned way, storage, and ways to use these sauces for cooking traditional and modern cuisine. ADOBE LIGHTROOM–PROCESSING YOUR PHOTOS You just finished a nice set of photos with your DSLR, now what? In this Basic Adobe Lightroom class, get an overview of this easy to use software, which allows you to efficiently process your images, organize your photos, and make basic edits. We’ll cover the workflow–from taking photos off your camera, loading into Lightroom, doing simple and some advanced fixes, exporting, and sharing. SAT PREPARING FOR THE NEW TEST–MATH & VERBAL The new SAT is arriving in March 2016. If you plan to take this new SAT test, a prep course is essential. This four week overview course will cover the differences in the new SAT and the previous version. We will decipher the new math questions that cover Algebra, Problem Solving and Data Analysis and Advanced Math. Since there will be a calculator and NO CALCULATOR section, we will also discuss strategies to use when you don’t have access to your calculator. Senior Citizens Policy

The Community School of New Hope-Solebury reserves the right to cancel a course entirely or to change its time, location or instructor. In the event a course for which you have registered is cancelled, you will be notified. If you are unable to substitute a suitable replacement for a cancelled course, you will be refunded all tuition and fees you have paid for the course.

Adults age 65 and over may register for most courses at a $5 discount per class of $50 or more. However, full tuition is required for certain classes and all special workshops, trips or events. There is no discount on course materials. Proof of age may be required.

Inclement Weather Closing Inclement weather may force the cancellation of classes.
