INTRODUCTION / TRINE DUSINE
CREATIVE AND AMBITIOUS ARCHITECT WITH A FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY As Master of Science with specialization in Architecture, I have a passion for holistic-oriented architecture of high aesthetic quality as well as functional and technical architecture. I’ve always been particularly aware of, and sensitive to, the surroundings in which I move. Architecture is the only art that you can’t help but feel. You can avoid paintings, music, and history but good luck getting away from architecture. The framework we design must, in my opinion, be designed with a courage to challenge the norm, but also a sensitivity and respect to the actual framework we design and create for all of us to live with, in or around. Every task I address with tools gained through my studies at Aalborg University - first I work to understand through research and analysis and then I design. This method has to lead to some of the projects described in this portfolio, that I hope you very much enjoy. Best,

THE VERTICAL NEIGHBORHOOD IN A WOODEN HIGHRISE This project has had the focus of transforming the horizontal neighborhood into a vertical neighborhood. The motivation for this sustainable high-rise has been to challenge the Danish Building Regulations - both in terms of building high-rises in wood, but also the programme of our buildings today. Social sustainability has been the primary driving force towards new ways of living together in high-rises, where building groups of 8-12 families can design their own space. Each building group is given a three-floor segment in the building and will design this space according to their needs. My responsibilities were to have an overview of the project and the report, writing the report while making analysis and research into the field of wooden high-rises. My assignments were concept development, 2D and 3D sketching, investigation and simulations of the indoor environment, designing of a passive facade system, implementation of sustainable systems, wind simulations through a wind tunnel, solar/ shadow impact and investigations, daylight factor simulations, gaining knowledge on building groups and designing a new way of living in highrise buildings, fulfilling a DGNB certification and LCA. The project is chosen as one of the most interesting architectural master thesis projects and will participate in exhibitions and events to come, representing Architecture and Design, Aalborg University.

The concept of this building is to use the core values of the horizontal neighborhood and translate it into a vertical neighborhood. Through segments of three floors, small communities will rise, each adding their own individual identity to the overall architectural expression. These will be brought into the city and up towards the sky in a wooden high-rise, where sustainable choices and social responsibilities are promoted.

Three-floor segments for one building group The building is divided into smaller segments of three floors. These are designed with a focus on aspects such as fire, scale, and floor area. Each segment is highly flexible and offers the possibility for each group to design the interior as they wish. The inhabitants can hereby decide the number of apartments, the size of these, shared and private spaces. The illustration above visualizes possibilities of different typologies inserted into the segment.

Masterplan Surrounding the site are greenscapes and streetscapes that help to define the space in which people are the priority. The urban design surrounding the wooden high-rise is adding a new element of water in between the green park and grey square. As shown in the illustration below, the building is supporting a pathway, by enhancing the axis for pedestrians, from coast to coast. The scale in the area is transforming from 2 stories towards 22, where Portland Towers, FrihanvstĂĽnet and The Silo support the scale of the wooden high-rise and helps to illustrate where the ‘city center’ is located.
Sustainable strategies Several strategies have been incorporated in the project, the largest factor has been the double facade - it both protects the indoor environment, creates an integrated railing, lower the need for heating inside the apartments and protects the wooden construction from direct contact to the harsh climate near the sea. The facade also makes it possible to ventilate the building through thermal buoyancy and has the ability to preheat the air before it enters the building, creating a more stable environment throughout all year. Other strategies such as solar cells, great indoor facilities for bike parking, lowering of wind turbulence and more.

Floor Plans The buildings first three floors consist of both public and semi-public spaces, where workshops and workspaces are created to benefit both the inhabitants in the building, but also the surrounding inhabitants in Nordhavn. Moving towards the sky in this high-rise, the building is constructed of 3 floors segments that illustrate individual neighborhoods. The floor plans to the right is designed for 8 families with 3 different apartment types, one large common room with space for both playground, urban gardens and a dining area. Rooms are places accordingly to daylight conditions and the structural system enable duplex apartments. Imagine living in the city, in a townhouse you designed with a garden, playground and outdoor space on the 15th floor overlooking Copenhagen and the ocean.

CRAFTSMAN VILLAGE This project is built upon a vision of social interaction and compressed living, with the qualities of suburban lifestyles. Furthermore, the architectural language is driven by the human senses; touch, hearing and visual perception, with a focus on the details in relation to the context of the Craftsman District, north of Aalborg. The complex has both mixed private apartments and public services. The design is a modern take on how to design sustainable social housing units, where the service wall inside the building as well as the gallery towards the south, are the new initiatives towards a more sustainable, smart and welcoming building. My responsibilities were to have an overview of the project report, writing the report while making analysis and research into the field of the social housing complex and sensing tectonics. My assignments were concept development, studies of materials and light intake, site analysis, investigations and simulations of the indoor environment, designing of a passive facade system towards the south, implementation of sustainable systems, solar/shadow impact and investigations, daylight factor simulations and graphic design.

Gallery Above is an illustration of the activity and transparency of the gallery during the daytime. This multifunctional gallery serves as an electricity generator and as distribution for the people living in the complex, it divides the space into private and public borders for either leisure or transfer. Furthermore, it shades during the hot summer period to avoid passive heat gain, while in the period before and after it allows the sunlight to enter the apartments, where the passive heat is utilized. Solar cells on the roof to contribute to the building’s energy consumption.

Service Wall All apartments in the complex are provided with a service wall. The wall provides distribution of all pipes in the building, including mechanical ventilation, heating, hot and cold water, along with drains. This is a sustainable solution that makes the building adaptive for change over time. A scenario could be that several small apartments have to be merged into one in the future. The placement of the pipes in a singular wall makes the ceiling in the rest of the complex free and thereby create space for a taller ceiling height. The service wall is at the same time creating storage opportunities for the apartments as fixed fixtures. On the exterior, the wall consists of birch veneer, which brings a warm atmosphere to all the rooms. This is a tactile, sustainable material, which transforms this technical wall into a centralized piece of quality for the inhabitant.

HOUSE ON A HILL My hometown, Frederikshavn, with its many forest areas and bunks from the 1950s inspired me to sketch on this project. A house that utilizes the thermal heat, melts together with nature and opens up to its own center - surrounding the nature as well as creating a connection between all rooms. The simplicity in shape is contrary to the wilderness of the surrounding landscape. The material is concrete, with inside separating walls of wood, adding warmth to this cave of a house that hides in the hillside.

HAMREVANN The dream of living in a cabin and being close to work, cultural life, and social life are fulfilled in this proposal for a new area called Hamrevann outside Kristiansand, Norway. Close to nature and city - with the trees outside the windows, while having a dense neighborhood and playmates for the children are right outside the door. The dream of a life in peace and quiet, with a healthy lifestyle surrounded by beautiful, sensual and relaxing sceneries - and not spending all your spare time on maintenance and gardening. Hamrevann houses large natural qualities that can make it a truly unique residential area. An expansion in a sensitive natural area may risk removing all the qualities of the area - which makes the site attractive and gives it an identity. Many developments nearby are marketed to be close to nature, but actually, remove nature by exploding the mountains, to level out the area and make room for single-family homes, with private garden and parking for one or more cars. The project’s ambition is to preserve natural qualities and adapt the development to the landscape. Robust building structures accommodate a high degree of flexibility in the distribution of housing units. The different apartment types designed, can be freely mixed into the building volume, so there will be more or less of one unit in relation to the developer’s wishes concerning target groups and market demands.

THE WEDGE OF STIGSBORG Focus on this semester was urban design/ spatial planning. The context was ‘Stigsborg Brygge’ in Nørresundby, which is an unhandled brownfield. 70% of the functions were dedicated to commercial use and 30% for living. The focus of the design revolves around a concept of a city center, which is connected to the nearby context where a direction in relation to the neighboring areas is considered. Furthermore, recreational areas are prioritized, where public and semi-private zones are installed. To blur the line between the different zones a vertical green park is designed. This is also creating a safer environment where visibility is desired. My assignments were to setup layout for the report, contribute to writings, theory and method, diagrams and graphic communication, concept development, taking photos of site and case studies, site microclimate analysis, designing of vertical garden and building typologies, street/ road design including fire exits, calculation of ramps for parking basement, AutoCAD master plan.

TRANSFORMATION OF HIETZING Through informal meetings and personal narratives from the locals in Hietzing along Lanzier Strasse, this project is designed with the focus on activating the area and improving the street layout. Lanzier Strasse is the main street in Hietzing and is characterized by traffic and overall hard surfaces. By implementing the basic values of Jan Gehl and being sensitive to pedestrians and cyclists, the street with shops and restaurants will get a new urban environment. At the same time, new homes are being implemented in the empty sites along the street, hereby adding the potential of small communities to rise, while activating the overall city center. My assignments during this project where analysis of the site (counting people and drawing their pattern on different occasions, time and locations), personal narratives including photos, method, theory, references, designing of the street layout and pockets, as well as designing posters.
