Oh Pearl. How many times have we passed your neon signs on the highway? How many times have we looked in wonder at how chic and hipster you are? But really, Pearl is an ideal hangout spot as it has a little bit of everything. For your shopping needs, there’s boutiques for everyone. If you’re hungry after a casual walk around the Riverwalk, the Pearl offers bars, ice cream parlors, bakeries, coffeeshops, and too many restaurants to even name. The Pearl Brewery embraces its past to create a atmosphere in itself. Also, there’s a bunch of festivals held here! And a weekly farmers market held on the weekends. Always fun. Can’t go wrong with a day at the Pearl.

Editor’s Note Hey. Welcome back. So good to see you. We’d like to thank all of our lovely participants who voted in our Best For Trinity polls last semester. We had some standard winners with the likes of Bombay Bicycle Club and Tycoon Flats, but also some new additions with the likes of La Gloria and Feast. Make sure you check out all the winners and go pay them a visit; they won for a reason afterall. So here’s to a new year and a new semester, one hopefully full of all the best Trinity and San Antonio has to offer.

Served in tapas-sized plates, this restaurant specializes in sharing in eloquent style. The decorations are posh, clean, and modern and the atmosphere hypes you up into feeling “cool” and “whimsical” and especially rich. Feast offers a range of cuisines that vary from lamb kebabs, to calamari, to sweet corn poppers. No one genre of food can descibe this restaurant, which is precicely what sets them apart from many others. One of the most popular meals is the “Jack Cheese Mac” with bechamel sauce and chorizo oil bread crumbs. They also have social hour on Tuesday-Friday 5p.m.-7p.m. and the drinks are exquisite. They literally make you feel like a ‘King,’ ‘Queen,’ or ‘Princess.’ Those are the names of the drinks, in case you didn’t get it.

1
With a festive, south-of-the-border feel, La Gloria is a San Antonio staple of Mexican food in a city that is often overrun by tacos and quesadillas aplenty. The drinks are strong, the food is authentic and the views are incredible. Situated right along the Riverwalk in the Pearl, this restaurant brings bona fide Mexican cuisine to the table, featuring plates from specific Mexican destinations. The papel picado and macabre decorations bring the “spirit” of Mexico alive and accentuate the eclectic style of Chef Johnny Hernandez. 10/10 would recommend. Well, I would recommend at least, and isn’t that good enough?

If you’re ever in the mood for authentic Thailand cuisine, Thai Dee is the go to restaurant. From the moment you step in, you’re welcomed by a homey atmosphere, from the walls filled with rich Thai history, to hearing the sound of the chefs preparing delicious smelling meals from the kitchen. This is very much a place that a college student looking for some good eats and a kind wait staff would appreciate, without breaking the bank of course. “The vibe was very laid-back but authentic. The portions were amazing because I spent about $9 on enough fried rice to feed me for a week,” said Georgie Riggs, “their basil fried rice is my new favorite out of San Antonio’s cast expanse of fried carb dishes.” Thai Dee is a mix of a chill atmosphere with some seriously good food, so go get you some! I had some of the best Thai chicken wings I’ve ever tried in my entire life; if that doesn’t speak volumes about the love that they put in their chicken wings, then I don’t know what will.

I wasn’t able to grasp how a restaurant as small as Pho Kim Long has been able to stay around for so long in an area full of restaurants… That is, not until I went in for the first time and realized what real Pho was supposed to taste like. This Vietnamese restaurant provides hot and comforting food, from their beef pho to their classic cha gio (listed as Vietnamese egg rolls on the menus), which were crisp and filled with meat. But the real winner for me, of course, were the fried chicken wings, with their crisp crust and subtle semi-sweet sauce, these babies had me drooling from the moment I ordered them. With a combination of modest prices, speed, efficiency and proximity to Trinity, Pho Kim Long should definitely be on your list of eateries to visit.

Local coffee
As college students, we’re all familiar with coffee, and if you’ve made it this far without the caffeine addiction, I commend you. Personally, I am not usually picky when it comes to my 5903 broadway st. early morning pick-me-up and stoop to drinking Java City as (210) 267-5494 regularly as the next student, but every once in a while I like localcoffeesa.com to treat myself to something a little more special! Local Coffee serves as a perfect escape from campus and mediocre coffee no offense Einstein’s. Using Instagram-worthy lattes and the cool coffee shop vibe as incentive, homework has never been easier. Getting away from campus means getting away from distractions, and the delicious coffee is just a bonus! When you pay for the flower design delicately placed in the foam of your latte, you are paying for the experience Local Coffee offers, an experience well worth it. I highly recommend the chai tea latte with a couple shots of espresso, my personal favorite!

Tucked in a small shopping center on Broadway past Austin Highway, this cute little bakery is open for business daily. While it is famous for its sweets; and I highly recommend Grandma’s Sugar Cookies and the Red Velvet cupcake; its atmosphere is what truly makes it special. It is always bustling with customers; Trinity friends treating themselves to a slice of pie, Alamo Heights power moms grabbing lunch, and the occasional awkward high school date. Plus, the allure of possibly seeing movie star Armie Hammer, whose wife owns the bakery, doesn’t hurt.

What’s a great weekend without a new tattoo? Dandyland Tattoos and Piercings has provided one of the most high quality body piercings and tattoos for the last 18 years and are still going strong. Though a bit pricy for college students — from tattoos having a minimum price of $80 and piercings depending on the type of piercing — Dandyland reiterates the fact that they value their customer’s health and safety more than anything else and refuse to use anything less than the best materials possible.

A second location that provides procedures as safe and clean as Dandyland is Mind’s Eye Tattooing & Piercing, which just so happens to be located on Broadway! For the anxiety filled kids who are looking to do some body modifications, but aren’t exactly sure if they want to go through with it, Mind’s Eye studio has members on staff that show you the step to your future tattoo or piercing. Piercing clients must be 18 years or older and have a proper ID, so if you’re looking for a clean, sterile place to get tatted up, or to get that septum piercing that might possibly kill your mother, father, anyone really, then hit up Mind’s Eye!

Green is a vegetarian and vegan restaurant located in the heart of the Pearl district. The first thing you notice is their herb garden surrounding the perimeter and its packed parking lot. Going there at lunch usually requires a wait while breakfast has a more relaxed atmosphere. Sipping on coffee with a plate of their delicious Mexican omelette was a perfect start to the day. I highly recommend grabbing one of their vegan cupcakes on your way out!

Here are the important details: It’s a bar that is walking distance from Trinity and it is known to Trinity students for “Thirsty ThursBays.” Any night, you are bound to run into several students drinking their troubles away, but on Thursdays it is as if Bay’s is an extension of Trinity. While you may not know every name, every face seems familiar. Plus, they have daily deals on drinks. It is definitely a Trinity tradition to go there at least once.

Everyone knows the Riverwalk, also known as Paseo del Rio, here in San Antonio. To us living in the city it may seem a bit touristy by now. But for those out-oftowners you may be hosting, nothing is more impressive. The river, with its first restaurant opening in 1946, is home to a variety of restaurants, bars and shops that are sure to entertain guests. It’s become just as much of an icon as the Alamo here in town. Hop on one of the ferries and take a guided tour down the river for some great sights and some even better memories.
