Department of Health Care Administration Annual Report 2011-2012
CHAIR’S MESSAGE It’s been another good year for Trinity’s program in Health Care Administration! All of our 2011-12 graduates were employed within weeks of graduation. Many of the on-campus students accepted full-time positions in their residency organizations. All of our on-campus students procured residency placements in organizations that will provide rich educational experiences and successfully launch their careers. We admitted new groups of students who are energetic and excited about a career in this dynamic field. Our faculty continue to be excellent classroom instructors, attentive advisers, productive scholars, and valuable contributors to the local and professional community. Our fall Leadership Symposium featured Quint Studer, founder and CEO of the Studer Group. Those of you who have heard Studer speak know that he can captivate an audience! We had a capacity crowd for his public address, “Straight A Leadership: Alignment, Action, Accountability.” Afterwards, he spent several hours over a pizza lunch with our students, providing a wealth of advice for young careerists about the challenges and opportunities ahead. We are very grateful that he devoted so much time to the Trinity program. Other good news stems from a major gift from Trinity trustee Michael Neidorff ’65, his wife Noémi, and the Centene Corporation to support the development of Trinity’s new Center for the Sciences and Innovation, now under construction on campus. In recognition of that gift, the Innovation Center within the new complex will be named the Centene Corporation-Michael F. and Noémi Neidorff Center for Innovation in the Sciences, Health Care Management, and Liberal Arts. This is a wonderful recognition of our program’s value to the University and should create additional opportunities for collaboration with other programs and faculty within the Trinity community. And, last month, we received official notification that our program was reaccredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) for seven years, the maximum time allowable. We’ve been continuously accredited since 1968, the year we were first eligible. Accreditation represents an external judgment of the program’s high quality and commitment to continuous improvement. As always, I am privileged to be a part of Trinity’s Health Care Administration program. My appreciation extends to our faculty and staff, the University administration, our students, the health care alumni, and the many friends in the professional community who have contributed to our success. Sincerely,
Mary E. Stefl, Ph.D. Chair, Health Care Administration

News and Awards 2010 DUCE AWARD HONORS DAVID R. WHITE Every year, the HCAD Alumni Association honors an alumnus who has made significant contributions to the field of health care administration. The 2010 recipient of the Dean Duce Award was David R. White ’73. White is chairman of the IASIS Healthcare Board of Directors in Franklin, Tennessee. White retired as chief executive officer of IASIS, a post he held for 10 years. Under his leadership, IASIS saw its revenue triple and won two Thomson Reuters Health Care Advantage Awards. The awards recognize hospitals that use data analytics to improve the quality of care and business results. White also oversaw massive improvements to the system’s health care information technology. Prior to running IASIS, White served as CEO of LifeTrust America Inc., managing 55 assisted living communities. He was also president of the Atlantic Group of Columbia/HCA, overseeing 43 hospital operations in nine states. Prior to that post, he served as executive VP and COO of Community Health Systems. The Duce Award is named for the late Leonard A. Duce, a former professor in the program and the first dean of the graduate school at Trinity University.
ROBERT SHAW RECEIVES 2011 DUCE AWARD The 2011 recipient of the Duce Award was Robert N. Shaw, FACHE, ’69, ’72. Shaw is currently the president of Norton Cancer Institute in Louisville, Kentucky. His career, however, spans over 40 years in health care administration. Prior to his position with Norton, Shaw was executive VP and COO of the Cancer Therapy and Research Center in San Antonio. After graduation, Shaw continued his active role in the health care administration program and in the Trinity community at large. He is currently on Trinity’s Board of Visitors and has previously served as the chair of the National Alumni Board. In the health care administration department, Shaw has served as an executive-in-resident, held an adjunct faculty position, and was the driving force behind the program’s capital campaign.
QUINT STUDER KEYNOTES LEADERS IN HEALTH MANAGEMENT SYMPOSIUM Quint Studer, founder of Studer Group, the 2010 Baldrige National Quality Award winner, was the 2011 Leadership in Health Management Symposium’s keynote speaker. Held on Friday, October 28, 2011, the Symposium was a standing-room-only success. Members of the local health care community converged on the Trinity campus, joining faculty, staff, and students from both the Trinity HCAD program and Army Baylor. Studer Group was gracious enough to provide everyone in the audience with a free copy of Studer’s book Straight A Leadership. The HCAD students also had the privilege of having a pizza lunch and a question and answer session with Studer after his address. The Leaders in Health Management Symposium is one of the Center for Leadership Development’s efforts to provide continuing professional education for students, alumni, and friends.
JEAN HOLT RECEIVES DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD Jean E. Holt, MD, ’99 received the Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes exceptional service to the Health Care Administration program. The award was presented to Dr. Holt at the 2012 Preceptors’ Conference dinner in front of an audience of health care administrators from all over the country, as well as department representatives and students. Dr. Holt, who graduated from the health care administration’s executive program in 1999, not only taught a seminar in current health care issues for the on-campus program, but she also implemented the Physicians and Physician Relations course for the program in fall 2000, and continued to develop and teach the course until spring 2011. The course was a valuable addition to the curriculum, which gave students the chance to learn about physician-administrator interaction and interact with a physician in a relatively stress-free environment pre-residency. The Distinguished Service Award acknowledges the significant impact that Dr. Holt has made on the Trinity program.
UAB CASE COMPETITION For the first time, Trinity participated in the annual Health Administration Case Competition sponsored by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) health system. This competition brings together student teams from over 35 graduate programs across the country who present their analysis of a real case situation to a panel of judges comprised of senior health care executives. Representing Trinity in 2012 were Rashna Patel, a resident at Baylor Health Care System; Cameron Howard, a resident at St. David’s HealthCare in Austin; and Margarita Gardea, now a resident at Harris County Hospital District. Faculty members Mary Stefl and Amer Kaissi also attended. Their participation was made possible by a gift from Wayne Smith ’72 that was matched by the Praxair Corporation.
Quint Studer meets with HCAD students following his keynote address at the 2011 Symposium. Current students, residents, and alumni gather in Chicago for the ACHE Congress on Healthcare Leadership.

Campaign Update We launched Trinity University’s Campaign for Health Care Administration in 2007 as a way to ensure the long-term viability of our program. It was an outgrowth of a thorough strategic planning process, and we viewed it as the road to achieving our vision: becoming the premier health care administration program for integrating on-campus study with applied and experiential learning. With the encouragement of Trinity’s administration and the guidance, assistance, and personal help of our capable campaign Steering Committee, we have made significant progress toward the campaign goals of $3 million for current operations and $13 million for endowment and future sustainability. To date, we have received a total of $7,513,515 in gifts and pledge commitments. More than $1.9 million of those gifts and pledges are for current student financial support and current use for the general program. More than $1.1 million was received for endowment for student financial aid. Another $4 million in pledge commitments made as bequest intentions will create future endowments for student financial aid and support of the program’s Center for Leadership Development. We owe a special thanks to alumnus Bob Shaw ’69, ’72, who has provided extraordinary leadership as chair of the Steering Committee. Two of the most visible gifts to date come from Cheryl and Wayne Smith ’72 and Methodist Healthcare Ministries. The Smiths most generous $1M unrestricted gift has been placed in a quasi-endowment that will generate funds to be used annually for program enhancements. The Methodist Healthcare Ministries provided a gift in honor of their long-time hospital system president John E. Hornbeak, LFACHE, who now serves as the Executive-in-Residence for the department. The Ministries gift established an endowment for the Hornbeak Scholar, the recipient of a full-tuition graduate fellowship. A gift from Douglas D. Hawthorne ’69, ‘72 and the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, Dallas creates an enduring common space for students within our office suite, a project that will be completed during a future renovation of Chapman Graduate Center. Other campaign gifts provide student scholarships and fellowships, symposium speakers, and an innovative faculty fellowship program (initially funded by St. David’s HealthCare) that has allowed our faculty to spend time in a hospital setting during the summer months. We are most grateful to our 84 Campaign donors made up of alumni, friends, parents, faculty and staff, corporate, and foundation donors. Every gift, no matter the size, makes an impact on the department. The confidence in our future, as expressed through these gifts and pledges, is deeply appreciated. Right now, we are very close to our $3 million goal for current operations, and we hope to close the formal Campaign for Health Care Administration at the end of this calendar year. At the same time, we will be working with the HCAD Alumni Association to promote annual giving. In many ways, the strength of this program rests on the shoulders of its alumni, and we will be asking you to continue to invest in the program and your degree. This campaign has made a real difference, but the financial support is only part of it. Through the process we have reconnected with so many of our alumni who have so much wisdom to share with us. On behalf of all of our faculty and staff, I heartily thank each and every one of you who has supported this effort.

WAYNE AND CHERYL SMITH PLEDGE $1 MILLION TO HCAD
Distinguished health care executive and Trinity graduate Wayne T. Smith ’72 and his wife Cheryl, pledged $1 million to support the Health Care Administration program and Center for Leadership Development in Health Management at Trinity. The gift goes a long way in advancing Trinity’s Campaign for Health Care Administration and will be used for program enhancements. “Trinity University is very grateful to Wayne and Cheryl Smith for this gift and the many ways they support our program,” said Trinity President Dennis A. Ahlburg. “The need for health care leaders who are capable of exceptional management improvements and innovation has never been greater; the Smiths’ gift will help Trinity prepare these future professionals.” Smith was the recipient of Trinity’s Health Care Administration Alumni Association Duce Award in 2005, and he was also honored by the Auburn University Alumni Association with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. Smith is chairman of the board, president, and CEO of Community Health Systems, one of the country’s leading operators of general acute care hospitals. For the last ten years, Modern Healthcare magazine has listed him as one of the “100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare.” “As a health care leader, Wayne Smith recognizes the importance of combining strong business skills with a passion for improving people’s lives,” said Mary Stefl, chair of the department of Health Care Administration. “His gift will create a legacy for future health care professionals.”
