Trinity College Annual Report 2018–19

The Chair’s Report In the five years or so I have been reporting on Trinity’s work in development and alumni relations, it has become something of a habit to say that this year was even better than last. Given that in the year 2017–18 we received gifts totalling a rather exceptional £27.6m, I had anticipated that I wouldn’t be able to rely on that formula in reporting on the year just gone. That said, in 2018–19, 14.5% of alumni gave to the College, a higher percentage than ever before – so on that count, this year was indeed even better than last. And if the £6.8m we received in new gifts, pledges and legacies didn’t match the exceptional total from the previous year, it is still our second largest total and a very significant sum indeed. It makes a huge difference to what the College can do in support of its core work, which has always been to support, sustain and enhance the vibrancy of the College as an intellectual community. I have been reporting on alumni relations and development matters for five years, but I have been engaged in teaching in universities for five plus thirty, and I don’t think there has ever been a time of greater economic uncertainty for students. For very many that uncertainty amounts to whether it is possible, or sensible, to incur the costs of studying in Cambridge and the debts with which they may be left. In these circumstances, Trinity is committed above all to ensuring that those who can most benefit from studying here are not prevented or deterred from doing so by financial considerations. After all, it is our ability to attract the very best to the College which ensures that Trinity will continue making outstanding contributions in science, law, business, medicine, the arts, and so much more. We are grateful to so many of you for giving so generously, and especially for your support for our students. This year we received significant gifts and pledges from many alumni in support of top-up and full undergraduate bursaries, continued support for overseas graduate studentships in Natural Sciences from Tzo Tze Ang (1997) and Eashwar Krishnan (1996), a pledge from Alice Penney (1984) and James Penney (1984) to fund a PhD studentship in the Arts and Humanities, and a gift from Robert Crawford
14.5%
(1992), also directed to graduate students in the Arts and Humanities, to name just a few. It seems to me that the other side of our work, not to do with raising funds, but to do with enhancing the connections between the College and our alumni, and between alumni themselves, also relates to the very special character of life ‘on campus’. Of course, nothing will allow all the relationships of university days to carry on into the future unchanged, but the Alumni Relations and Development Office hopes by its work to enable College connections to be sustained, strengthened, and for new ones to be formed. In this last year almost 2,000 alumni have joined us for events in the UK and overseas, including in Cambridge, London, New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, San Francisco, Tokyo, and Boston. It has been a great pleasure for me to have met so many of you, and my impression is very much that Trinity alumni enjoy the opportunity to connect again with friends old and new, and with the spirit of the community. So 2018–19 was a good year, but we always endeavour to do better in providing events, publications and initiatives that are of interest to alumni of all eras. If you have ideas or suggestions for how we could improve, please get in touch with me, or with Amy Trotter, Executive Director of Alumni Relations and Development. The College has every reason to be tremendously proud of its alumni and their achievements, and to be grateful for their loyalty and affection. Thank you for your support and your contribution to Trinity’s continued success. I very much hope to see you at one of our events during the year ahead.

Supporting students: The impact of your gifts ‘My ambition is to blend my medical and administrative skills to fix the NHS. Cambridge has given me so much. Now it’s my turn to pay it forward, and I’m heading out to change the world.’ Neil Cunningham (2013) studied Medicine at Trinity and graduated in 2019. He is now working as a first year doctor at Northampton General Hospital, undertaking an Academic Foundation Programme, combining clinical work and management. In his first year of studies at Trinity, Neil was a recipient of support including a bursary, established thanks to a generous legacy from Dr Paley Johnson (1953). ‘I am the first in my family to go to university, and I was the first from my grammar school to come to Cambridge to study medicine. Growing up on
a Northern Irish dairy farm, I was encouraged to study hard to ‘get a good job’, but I always wanted to go further. Without scholarships and bursaries, I couldn’t have come to Cambridge and my life would be so different. ‘In my second year, I volunteered for a summer programme teaching English in China. I fell in love with China too, but there was so much that was disorganised and inefficient about that particular programme… So I decided to start my own fully immersive summer camps where Cambridge students teach schoolchildren in Guangzhou. That student-led programme has grown and expanded through China and into Indonesia, and we even run a British-style debating carnival.’ Thanks to our alumni and supporters, many other young people like Neil will have the opportunity to reach their academic and personal potential, and leave Trinity to shape the world for the better.

Krishnan-Ang Studentships
Legacies: Gifts that endure
Since 2008, Eashwar Krishnan (1996) and Tzo Tze Ang (1997) have generously supported Trinity overseas graduate students in the sciences through the Krishnan-Ang Studentships, which celebrated their 10th year in summer 2019 with a special event in Hong Kong attended by alumni of the programme and current students. Trinity is indebted to Eashwar and Tzo Tze for their commitment to support the Studentships for a further decade.
A legacy is a simple way to give to Trinity to contribute to its long-term financial stability, and is a gift that endures and supports future generations long after the donor’s lifetime. In 2018-19 the College received 17 legacies from alumni, and notification of a forthcoming legacy from Professor Ernst Sondheimer (1942, pictured below) towards general purposes, to enable the gift to be directed to areas of most pressing need.
‘I would like to thank Eashwar and Tzo Tze (as well as Trinity College) for their enormous generosity in the form of the Krishnan-Ang Studentship with which I have been blessed. I consider it an immense privilege to be given an opportunity that was otherwise unavailable to me, and I am resolved to make the most of every day whilst here. I have received what many others never will, and I hold a deep sense of personal responsibility to ensure I work hard to remain deserving.’
‘My father, Professor Ernst Helmut Sondheimer, was an undergraduate in Mathematics at the College during the war, and a Trinity Fellow of Physics from 1948 to 1952. In his will, he left £10,000 to Trinity College “for its general purposes in recognition of support given to a refugee from Nazi Germany in difficult times.” Ernst was brought up in Stuttgart and sent to boarding school in England in summer 1936 aged 12, speaking hardly any English, and his parents and younger brother could only join him a year later.’

these universities and because this was in the 1950s and 1960s when access for state school pupils was expanding.
The Residential offered fifty talented 16 year olds from across the country the opportunity to stay at the College and to experience a true taste of Cambridge life, with bespoke lectures and seminars at Trinity and University faculties, guidance on A-Level subject choices, and information about the application process. Less advantaged students in areas of the UK currently under-represented at Cambridge were particularly encouraged to apply for the free residential. Priority was given to those who would be the first in their family to attend university, who were eligible for free school meals, or who had been in the care of a local authority. ‘My brother and I were both grammar school boys from the English Midlands who were fortunate enough to go to university – Oxford, to read Classics, in my brother’s case and Cambridge, to read Mathematics, in mine. Fortunate, because our school was one of those that did send pupils to
Even so, I recall that the best mathematician in my year was unable to go to university due to family circumstances. It seemed fitting to use the legacy from my brother’s will to set up the Foundation, so as to enable more talented young people to go to leading universities. We want to help them overcome any obstacles they might face and a residential course with a combination of lectures, team building sessions and practical advice – not to mention experiencing Cambridge College life – seemed ideal.’ Richard Stonehouse (1964) Chair, Stonehouse Educational Foundation The support of the Stonehouse Educational Foundation is enabling Trinity to run an annual residential until 2020. Year 11 is a vital stage prior to choosing A-Level subjects, and the initiative enables pupils to gain essential skills and confidence for their post-16 studies, and helps to ensure they are not deterred from realising their academic potential.

Access and Outreach: Second Schools’ Liaison Officer Trinity has been able to establish a second Schools’ Liaison Officer post thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, and the College has welcomed Lizzie Bowes (Newnham 2016), who joins Ellie Wood and colleagues in the Access and Outreach team. The gift will secure the second post for three years, enabling the team to strengthen their busy programme of activities and initiatives designed to help to raise educational aspirations.

Lizzie has a particular remit to encourage students under-represented at Cambridge to attend open days and residential courses, and to reach out to schools and prospective applicants across the country. She is able to draw on her own experience as she came from a state school which had no history of its students going on to study at Cambridge: ‘It was only after seeing my department and what would later become my College that I could really

Revealing the riches of the Wren: Sir Isaac Newton’s Library The Wren Digitisation Project is focused on digitising the riches of the Wren Library’s collection, to enable scholars and readers to access its treasures from anywhere in the world. Thanks to alumni support, the Wren Digital Library continues to expand, and exciting new projects have been made possible. A generous gift from John Koh (1976) is enabling the Library to digitise a selection of Sir Isaac Newton’s papers and around 20 books he owned and annotated, as well as other books of great importance to the history of mathematics and economics.
day mathematicians. This in turn will allow the Wren Library to broaden the scope of the project and to share it with the wider public. ‘Our interests are increasingly piqued by what is seen on a screen, and digitisation of the books and papers of one of Trinity’s most illustrious members is a worthy project.’ John Koh (1976)
The project will allow the display of some of Newton’s books in an interactive online environment and reveal their owner’s response to the works, for example showing the ways in which he folded corners of pages in order to highlight particular passages. It will also enable transcriptions of Newton’s annotations to be incorporated, as well as translations from Latin into English, and from his own invented mathematical notations into formulae more familiar to modern-

Senior Bursar’s Report
Senior Bursar’s Report: Future-proofing Trinity’s Finances The College’s financial position remains very stable. In addition to funding its own activities and making its University Contribution of £2.5m to the University’s Colleges’ Fund, Trinity has been able to make substantial grants totalling £4.3m (2018: £6.m) to support the Colleges and University and has increased its spending on scholarships and awards to £6.5m (2018: £5.8m). © JAMES APPLETON
However, the College’s investments are not immune from the fluctuations of the wider economy. The impact of the UK’s decision to leave the European Union remains unquantifiable but the uncertainty alone has been negative. Meanwhile, shortening leases, empty rates charges and fewer upward only rent reviews mean that rental income will become more volatile. The maintenance of the College’s fabric and infrastructure is a constant draw on its resource, but often with significant variations from year to year. Maintenance, repairs and improvements totalled a low £3.9m (2018: £3.8m) this year, whilst we plan for new rounds of major expenditure. In years of low outlay the College makes transfers to the College Reconstruction Fund, which is part of Designated Funds. The Fund now has a surplus of £8.8m. Unfortunately the costs of renewing Grade 1 listed buildings have grown rapidly so this surplus may not last long. In order to insulate the College from a remote but high impact risk, Trinity withdrew from the Universities Superannuation Scheme on 31 May 2019, and established new equivalent arrangements for future pension provision for eligible staff. The College’s Statement of Financial Activities (SOFA) in the Annual Report and Accounts divides the College’s income between various funds. In any given year the key indicator of Trinity’s financial health is the net income in the College’s unrestricted General Funds, which was £1.3m in 2019 (2018: £1.2m).
£
The investment objective of the College’s endowment is to maximise its long term real income growth. This is intended to be achieved through investing mainly in property and equities. The annual performance when measured in terms of valuation has a weak correlation with this long term objective, since in the short term asset prices are buffeted by external factors. The College’s net investment income increased by 4.9% to £38m. The current valuation of the College’s net assets rose 4.6% from £1,464m to £1,532m.

Dividends in the securities portfolio continued to grow at well above the rate of inflation. In the property portfolio, the College purchased the freehold of Phase VI of the Science Park, which had previously been held on a long leasehold. The planning application by the College’s subsidiary, Dunsfold Airport Limited, for a new village at Dunsfold Park was finally satisfactorily concluded in early 2019, and development plans are now proceeding. The gradual development of this site has the potential to provide a positive cash flow for many years to come. In October 2018 work began at the Round Church Street site, where the new Trinity building, designed by BB&C Architects, will provide accommodation for 39 postgraduate students, and six residential sets. This exciting project in the heart of Cambridge is due for completion in January 2021. The Trinity Science Park has long brought together entrepreneurship with technology and know-how generated in Cambridge, and in October 2018 we were pleased to award the first Trinity Bradfield Prizes, funded by donors, to three Cambridge PhD students for their innovative technological ideas. 2018–19 was action-packed, and our alumni volunteers contributed to our work in so many different ways. Over 70 alumni served on our energetic Alumni Association committees and, working together, we delivered 37 fantastic events and plenty of opportunities to get involved. A highlight of the year that showed what can be achieved when we work together was the 40 Years of Women at Trinity event in April 2019. Just some of the ways in which alumni helped the College celebrate included sharing their defining moments for the Living History of Women at Trinity art installation; participating in the Singing Workshop
led by Ellie Tobin (2014) and Kate Apley (2014), and a performance in Hall of ‘Twenty-first-century Woman’ by Joanna Forbes L’Estrange; speaking in the sessions and panel discussions; and sharing their experiences as Trinity women in the short film It felt like a revolution, commissioned from Sonum Sumaria (2008). We want to continue developing exciting new events and opportunities but to do so we need your help. There are many ways that you can get involved and play an active role in shaping our alumni programme, which will be of benefit to you, your fellow alumni, and the generations who follow you.

Mrs Scarlett McNally (1987), Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon We need engaging speakers for the events we organise throughout the year, and Mrs Scarlett McNally kindly supported us on two recent occasions. Scarlett was one of the four fabulous panellists for the ‘Unexpected Journeys’ discussion during the Celebrating 40 Years of Women at Trinity event on Sunday, 28 April 2019, sharing her unexpected and unusual post-Trinity career with the audience. At the March 2019 Trinity Medics’ Association Dinner, Scarlett was one of the four speakers for the pre-dinner panel discussion ‘What I did after Trinity’, exploring the diversity of medical paths and careers.
‘I used to ignore alumni events, thinking I wouldn’t know anyone. I was honoured to be invited to speak, especially when students come too. I have always felt supported and grounded by my time at Trinity. It feels like giving back and spreading the support across generations. I also like challenging everyone that you can be a surgeon, or any other fantastic career. The events are always fun and often fascinating, with other talks and meeting interesting alumni.’ Scarlett McNally (1987)

Hoi Lam (1997), Developer Relations Lead, Android Machine Learning, Google We are always on the lookout for interesting and unusual event venues, at home and overseas. Hoi kindly hosted a fascinating Trinity Fellows’ Research Talk for 200 alumni and guests in summer 2018 at Google UK, London, on the latest developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Dr Sean Holden (e2002) and Alex Kendall (2014) considered how AI is becoming increasingly integrated into our daily lives, and how it will shape our future. Google proved to be the perfect place for the sell-out event, and we are planning to return to the venue in the near future, thanks to the generosity of Hoi and Google.
‘Coming from a working class family in Hong Kong, a Cambridge education was a dream both aspirationally and financially. I still remember ticking the box saying I could not afford the fees and thinking it could impact my chance of being accepted. Luckily, thanks to donors, I was able to complete my engineering degree at Trinity. Without their generosity, I would not be where I am today. That’s why I have started to pay it forward. I became a regular donor to the Trinity College bursary scheme and help the College in whatever way I can. I hope others can join me.’ Hoi Lam (1997)

Annual Fund
Pilot Top-Up Bursary Scheme
Trinity is committed to ensuring that every student is able to make the most of all that Cambridge offers. No student should be denied the chance to study here because of their background, or suffer hardship during their time at the College.
Since October 2018, Trinity and 12 other Colleges have been participating in the Pilot Top-Up Bursary Scheme (PTUBS), which is an initiative to enhance the existing Cambridge Bursary Scheme (CBS) and offers undergraduates from low and middle-income households additional financial support. Top-up bursaries mean that students with household incomes up to £62,000 are eligible for the additional support, therefore broadening and extending the current bursary provision.
Alumni gifts made towards student support help to alleviate financial concerns, freeing the students to concentrate on their education and research. The College is grateful to the many donors, including Robert Hawkins (1974), Roger Rawcliffe (1954) and Ian Watmore (1977), whose generous gifts have enabled us to establish new bursaries this year. Other priorities for the Annual Fund include Access, the Choir, the First and Third Trinity Boat Club, and areas of greatest need for the College.
‘The pilot scheme is an opportunity to assess what difference some extra money makes to students’ experience at Cambridge, to help them make the most of their time here, whether that is buying a laptop or books. The scheme helps not just the poorest students but also those from families with parents on average incomes. The Colleges recognise that these families can experience financial pressures, especially if they are supporting other school age or university students.’ Professor Catherine Barnard, Senior Tutor (e1996)

Telethon During our annual Telethon in March and April 2019 our hard-working team of 16 student callers spoke with nearly 800 alumni around the world in just over two weeks. This year we concentrated especially on raising money for top-up bursaries thanks to a ‘challenge’ grant from an anonymous donor. This meant that the first £50,000 raised by the students for the Pilot TopUp Bursary Scheme (PTUBS) was matched pound for pound. The students relished the challenge and enjoyed their conversations with alumni on a subject that is very close to their hearts.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to talk, and who shared their stories and insights – we hope you enjoyed the experience as much as the students. We are deeply grateful for your gifts and pledges of £358,307 (2018: £280,000) in support of the College, including £271,600 for PTUBS. Your generosity is enabling Trinity to provide more funding for our priorities and, in particular, our students.
‘Receiving support from Trinity has greatly improved my quality of life as I don’t need to worry as much about my finances any more. It has meant that I can concentrate on my studies, pursue numerous extracurricular activities and generally make the most out of my time in Cambridge.’ Grace Glevey (2017, English)

Recognising your Support
Recognising your Support The generosity of donors to the College is recognised through membership of the groups listed below.
1546
The 1546 Society The Society recognises regular gifts of £15.46 each month or above (or £5.15 per month or above for those who graduated within the last decade), and we now have 1062 members (1009 in 2017–2018). Regular gifts at this level are invaluable to Trinity because they provide a continual source of support to the College, allowing us to plan for the future. The College can also use this funding to easily address the areas of greatest need.
The Clock Tower Circle
The Great Court Circle
Membership is open to those who give upwards of £1,000 per year to Trinity, and there are now 322 Clock Tower Circle members (303 in 2018–19). The Clock Tower Circle was established to recognise the alumni and friends whose gifts provides funding for Trinity’s key priorities of teaching, research and student support, enabling the College to meet its commitment to excellence.
King’s Hall Circle
Fellow Benefactors
Alumni who inform the Alumni Relations and Development Office of their intention to remember the College in their will become lifetime members of the Great Court Circle.
The King’s Hall Circle was launched in 2017, in honour of the 700th Anniversary of the founding of the King’s Hall by Edward II in 1317. The Circle recognises some of College’s most generous supporters.
There are now 310 Great Court Circle members (298 in 2018–19), all of whom are invited back to Trinity each year for a special luncheon, followed by a bespoke activity such as a lecture, music recital or tour of the College, and refreshments in the Master’s Lodge.
The 30 members have given their support to a wide variety of College initiatives – some core to the College’s mission and others innovative and individual – including research, the first Senior Fellow Commoner in the Creative Arts post, and the Wren Library.
This year the College welcomed three new Fellow Benefactors, Dr Tom Howat (1999), Sir Henry Keswick (1958), and Mr Simon Keswick (1961), in recognition of their generous support for PhD students, and overseas scholarships.
